Man Utd could forget Hojlund & Zirkzee by signing amazing £63m striker

Manchester United fell to their second consecutive defeat under the new reign of boss Ruben Amorim with a 3-2 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

That defeat leaves United in 13th place in the table and a gap of six points has already opened up from the European spots.

The Red Devils dominated the game at Old Trafford: they had 71% of possession, 17 goal attempts and more corner kicks than their opponents Forest.

Yet, despite their dominance, the Red Devils went on to lose the game and it once again highlighted a glaring hole in the centre-forward position that Amorim needs to fill if he is to turn around United’s fortunes.

Current centre forwards Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have scored just five Premier League goals between them this season and despite Hojlund bagging on Saturday night, many believe the lack of quality in this area is costing United points.

Zirkzee and Hojlund upgrade being lined up

According to TBR Football, Dusan Vlahovic is a striker that Manchester United are keeping tabs on and remain interested in should any potential deal arise.

Serie A’s highest-paid player at £200k-a-week, is currently stalling on a new contract with his current deal running out in 2026.

Juventus want their frontman to take a pay cut to reflect his underwhelming performances since joining the Bianconeri, something Vlahovic is reluctant to do.

United are one of many clubs remaining attentive to the situation and could swoop if Juventus decide to cash in on the striker in order to recoup as much of their £70m outlay as possible.

How Vlahovic compares to Zirkzee and Hojlund

Vlahovic has been in decent form for Juventus this season, scoring six goals in 13 Serie A appearances and adding a further three goals in the Champions League.

The Serbian striker has scored more than Zirkzee and Hojlund combined this term, however, it is not just goals where the Juventus man would be an upgrade on United’s current attacking duo.

From the above table, it is clear that Vlahovic would be better suited to playing the number 9 role at Old Trafford. From these stats, you can begin to see why Vlahovic has been labelled as “more complete than Haaland” by Serbian FA president Nenad Bjekovic.

Vlahovic has played more minutes than both Zirkzee and Hojlund this season and leads the way on expected goals (xG) with 8.3 for this season.

Being that focal point is something that United have been looking for in their striker so with Vlahovic coming out on top in progressive passes received and aerial duels won, he is proving that he may be more of a handful for Premier League defenders.

In addition, the Serbian has had more touches than both his United counterparts this season and would be an ideal linkman for the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho to bounce off and link with.

Furthermore, the Juve star seems to also add value in United’s own box with their recent set-piece troubles being highlighted; the Serb having made eight set-piece clearances this season.

It remains to be seen whether a deal can be struck between the two clubs but it is evident that Vlahovic would be that focal point that Amorim is desperately craving at the start of his Manchester United reign.

Ben Stokes century sets up England declaration before West Indies dig in

Joe Root passes 150, Matt Fisher claims maiden Test wicket with second ball

Ben Stokes made a welcome return to the ranks of Test centurion with a belligerent display against West Indies as England set a commanding first-innings total. It had been well over 18 months and 23 Test innings without a ton for Stokes and much has happened in that time – from losing his beloved father, Ged, to a four-and-a-half-month absence from the game during which he had two operations to repair a serious finger injury and took time out to manage his mental health. But once he got going on the second morning in Barbados, it was something to behold. He struck four sixes and 11 fours as he reached 89 off just 92 balls by lunch, having started the day on nought after Dan Lawrence fell on the last ball of the opening day.A quieter period ensued after the interval as Kemar Roach and Jason Holder put the lid on England’s scoring for a time, but Stokes went out swinging once more, for 120, after bringing up his 11th Test hundred with a scampered single and celebrating with his crooked-fingered salute to the heavens in memory of his dad, who died in December 2020. Stokes’ last Test century had come against West Indies at Old Trafford in July of that year.Meanwhile, his captain, Joe Root, was at the other end of the pitch for the most part, during a 129-run partnership for the fourth wicket, having brought up his second consecutive Test century the evening before, his eighth in 19 Tests since the start of 2021.Root ended up with 153 on this occasion, before leaving Stokes to carry on and then seeing a 75-run seventh-wicket stand between Chris Woakes and Ben Foakes, allowing him to on 507 for 9 shortly after tea.Debutant Matthew Fisher, drafted into the squad after the Ashes debacle and handed his chance when Craig Overton fell ill on the eve of this match, struck with just his second ball in international cricket before Kraigg Brathwaite and Shamarh Brooks resisted further damage to steer West Indies to 71 for 1 at the close.Having seen John Campbell thread his first ball to the rope through backward point, Fisher elicited a prod outside off-stump and the ball flew off the toe-end of Campbell’s bat to Foakes behind the stumps. Poignantly, as he celebrated his maiden Test wicket, Fisher raised his finger skyward in tribute to his own father, Phil, who died when Matthew was just 14.Fisher thought he had his second wicket when Brooks jabbed in the direction of second slip, where Zak Crawley stooped very low to grab the ball in his fingertips, although he came up looking uncertain as to whether it had been grounded in the process and replays showed it had, confirming the not-out soft signal.Brathwaite was then given out lbw on 14, Jack Leach skidding one into his back pack – but not before it had grazed the bat, as the DRS confirmed to reprieve West Indies’ captain.Earlier, Stokes and Root had England innings looking like London buses as they carried their side past 300. That mark had evaded them for 12 innings and more than six months, until the first Test in Antigua, when they racked up 311 and 349 for 6 declared.Matt Fisher struck with his second ball in Test cricket•Getty Images

Having begun the day on 244 for 3, with Root on 119, Stokes lit up the morning. He twice advanced on left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul to launch him down the ground for six in consecutive overs, bringing up his fifty in the second instance. He later muscled Permaul over the fence at midwicket before clubbing the very next ball over cover for four.Stokes took to Alzarri Joseph in the following over with three consecutive fours, bringing up the 100-partnership with Root via a powerful drive through cover before launching him over long-off and through midwicket. But Stokes wasn’t done, passing 5000 Test runs with a mow down the ground to clear the fence by some distance.Root passed 150 for the 12th time in his career, the most by any England batter, but then Roach, with his first ball back into the attack and the seventh after lunch, ended his stay with one that nipped back from outside off and rapped the front pad. Initially adjudged not out by umpire Nigel Duguid, the hosts reviewed and Hawk-Eye showed the ball crashing into the top of leg stump to move Roach past Sir Garry Sobers and clear into seventh on West Indies’ list of all-time wicket-takers.Jonny Bairstow crashed Jayden Seales down the ground and through the covers before holing out to deep midwicket off Joseph, and with that Stokes threw the bat again. He heaved Brathwaite over the fence at deep midwicket for his first boundary since lunch, some 13.2 overs after the resumption, and was very nearly out on the next ball, lofting Brathwaite to long-on, where Campbell spilled a tough chance while stepping on the rope. Stokes came undone going big again one ball later, this time skying Brathwaite to Brooks at long-off.West Indies took three wickets for eight runs in the space of 14 balls, prompting Root to call his men in six overs into the evening session. Permaul, who had come in for some tough treatment, particularly at the hands of Stokes, had Foakes and Leach stumped by Joshua Da Silva to bookend Woakes’ dismissal, sending Roach high into the air on the leg side to be caught by Seales.

VIRADA

Assim como os primeiros 45 minutos, a segunda etapa começou bastante truncada, com poucas chances. A primeira grande criação resultou no gol do Coritiba.

DECISÃO NO COUTO PEREIRA

Surrey break batting record in commanding display at Kent

Their 671 for 9 declared is the highest score without a batter making a hundred, Kent 45 for 1 in reply

Surrey dominated Kent on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Beckenham, posting 671 for 9 declared before reducing Kent to 45 for 1, a deficit of 626.The Division One leaders broke the world record for the highest first-class total without an individual batter making a hundred, and equalled the first-class record of seven for the number of players making half-centuries without passing three figures. After Ollie Pope and Ryan Patel had made 96 and 76 respectively on day one, Jamie Overton smacked 93 from 92 balls, Ben Foakes made 91, Sam Curran 78, Colin de Grandhomme 66 and Jordan Clark 54 not outThe hosts meanwhile maintained their 100 percent record of conceding at least 500 in every first innings so far this season, with Nathan Gilchrist’s 3 for 121 the least awful bowling figures.Ben Compton and Daniel Bell-Drummond were the not-out batters at stumps on 14 and 7, after Dan Worrall removed England’s Zak Crawley for 17.Kent went into day two clinging to the hope that early wickets might keep them in the contest and they struck early when Foakes edged Matt Quinn behind.Surrey responded with a century partnership between Overton, in as a deluxe night-watchman, and Curran. Overton produced an array of shots and raced past 50 with successive fours off George Linde. When he holed out to Darren Stevens he was dropped near the boundary by Jordan Cox, who seemed to misjudge the flight, and in the same over Curran then passed 50 with a single.Overton subsequently hit Stevens for a six that cleared the stand and smacked Stevens’ next delivery for a maximum over the sightscreen, but he was out in the next over, bowled by Linde, seven runs short of his second first-class century. The dismissal meant Surrey became the first team ever to lose three consecutive batsman in the nineties in first-class cricket, following Pope’s departure late on day one.Surrey were 470 for 6 at lunch and although Curran was stumped on 78 off Linde, de Grandhomme became the sixth Surrey batter to score a half-century when he took two from Gilchrist. Will Jacks was out for 20 when he swiped Gilchrist to square leg, where Cox took a low catch, before de Grandhomme was eventually run out by Quinn, but the last-wicket duo of Clark and Worrall took Surrey past the previous world record for a score without an individual hundred, the 609 posted by Namibia against Uganda in 2010-11.Tea was delayed until 4.34pm at which point, with the lingering grains of hope draining away from the home fans, Surrey declared, leaving Worrall unbeaten on 44.Kent were left with 19 overs to navigate until stumps and were probably relieved they only lost Crawley, who was caught behind at the start of the eleventh over.

Cucurella upgrade: Chelsea want to sign "the best LB in the world" for £0

Chelsea have been one of the Premier League’s surprise packages this season.

Enzo Maresca has turned the West Londoners into a sensationally entertaining attacking juggernaut capable of giving anyone a game.

Moreover, while the defence is still a slight weakness compared to their rivals, the manager has been able to get the best out of Marc Cucurella.

However, football is a brutal business, and based on recent reports, the Spaniard could soon be replaced by one of the most exciting full-backs in world football.

Chelsea transfer news

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Chelsea are one of several sides interested in Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

Bayern Munich'sAlphonsoDaviesin action with Bayer Leverkusen's Nordi Mukiele

Alongside the Blues, the report has revealed that Manchester City and Manchester United are also keen on the Canadian, while Arsenal and Liverpool ‘are being kept informed.’

The report claims that there is hope at the Allianz Arena that the five-time Bundesliga winner will remain in Bavaria.

Bayern Munich'sAlphonsoDaviescelebrates scoring their fifth goal

However, he’s also supposedly interested in a move to the Premier League, and with his contract expiring in the summer, he’ll be free to enter into pre-contract negotiations next month and could leave for nothing.

While he’ll be available on a free, signing Davies could prove incredibly complicated, but given his immense ability, it would be a deal worth fighting for, even if it could be bad news for Cucurella.

How Cucurella compares to Davies

So, should Chelsea be able to get ahead of the competition next month and sign a pre-contract agreement with Davies, they’d probably do so with the intention of playing him as often as possible.

Therefore, he’d be up against Cucurella for game time.

With that, which left-back comes out on top when we compare them?

Well, when it comes to their raw output, which is an increasingly important metric for a full-back in the modern game, it’s the Canadian who comes out on top, and by quite some way at that.

For example, since the start of last season, the 24-year-old, whom USMNT legend Alexi Lalas dubbed “the best left back in the world,” has scored four goals and provided nine assists in just 63 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 4.84 games.

In contrast, the former Brighton & Hove Albion star has scored three goals and provided four assists in 45 appearances, resulting in a far less impressive average of a goal involvement every 6.42 games.

Unfortunately for the Spanish international, the one-sided nature of this comparison only continues when we look at their underlying numbers.

More specifically, when compared to other full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and European League by FBref, the Bayern ace’s top five underlying statistics make for far more impressive reading.

For example, he ranks in the top 1% for successful take-ons, the top 2% for progressive carries, the top 3% for pass completion, the top 6% for attempted passes and the top 9% for shot-creating actions, all per 90.

In contrast, the Blues star’s top five metrics see him in the top 5% for pass completion, the top 6% for blocks, the top 24% for tackles, the top 29% for attempted passes, and the top 33% for aerial duels won, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Cucurella remains a very talented left-back, there is seemingly no area of the game in which he outperforms Davies.

Therefore, while the competition will be tough, Chelsea must do whatever they can to secure the Canadian’s services next year.

Once rated at £100m: Tottenham set to look at signing new "version of Kane"

A misfiring frontline might not be the crux of Tottenham Hotspur’s mounting problems, but Ange Postecoglou will be sure to recognise the pressing need for something more up top.

Defensively, Spurs are in a bit of a rut, not least because Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are spending a second successive winter sidelined with injuries.

If the right opportunity comes along during the January transfer window, Tottenham will be sure to pounce. Well, a talented striker might just be up for grabs.

Spurs eyeing new centre-forward

As per The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Tottenham and Everton are set to join Fulham in the race for Evan Ferguson this winter, with Brighton & Hove Albion’s talented striker available on loan.

Ferguson, valued as high as £100m last summer, has struggled for game time this term due to the success of Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck. Aged 20, he’s got so much room for growth and already boasts a stunning ball-striking ability.

Tottenham aren’t the only team in for Ferguson’s touted signature, however, with Chelsea considering a move of their own. Daniel Levy needs to act quickly and with conviction.

What Evan Ferguson would bring to Spurs

Signing Ferguson on loan might be a move that benefits all parties, should Tottenham accelerate their interest over the coming weeks.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates

He’s only started two Premier League matches this season, scoring one goal, but is endowed with strength and speed and has been hailed as “one of the most exciting strikers” around by content creator Ryan Adsett.

Let’s not forget, Ferguson has already demonstrated his capabilities in the top flight, notching six goals from 15 starts as a teenager last year, only missing four big chances, as per Sofascore.

The 6-foot centre-forward might even shape into one of English football’s most potent forces, with his style of play even drawing comparisons to one Harry Kane.

Former Premier League striker John Aldridge has even said that Ferguson could become “an Irish version of Harry Kane” and that he reminds him of the Three Lions captain “in so many ways.”

Kane, 31, may be tearing it up in the German Bundesliga but his standing in the English game remains firmly intact. He’s one of the very best to do it, and so perhaps it’s not all that surprising that Ferguson has actually admitted that he idolises the goal machine.

Given that Alan Shearer, another iconic marksman, has praised Ferguson for having the full package, it’s quite clear that Tottenham could be on to something if they were to complete the signing this winter.

Former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi once said that Ferguson’s “improvement has been incredible” after his transition from the Irish game to the Premier League, and he still has so much left to offer.

His raw striking ability certainly offers shades of a young Kane; Spurs must welcome him to the fold and allow him to join a free-scoring team that perhaps needs something to complement and tussle with Dominic Solanke at number nine.

The impressive talent could make Spurs far harder to play against.
