DRS for wides? Chahal says yes; Taufel says no

Shastri wants questionable wide and no-ball calls to be directly dealt with by specialist TV umpires

Nagraj Gollapudi24-May-20225:04

Taufel: The definition of wides is somewhat opinion-based

Simon Taufel, the former ICC Elite Panel umpire, is not in favour of wides and height no-balls being referred as part of the two DRS reviews teams have in T20 cricket. Taufel’s opinion is in contrast to that of India and Rajasthan Royals legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who believes bowlers need a “bit more help” and that teams can “take a chance” by reviewing a wide call as it can potentially be pivotal.Talking with ESPNcricnfo, Chahal said he was at the receiving end of a potential wrong call on a wide this IPL during the April 10 league match against Lucknow Super Giants. Off the fourth delivery of his fourth over, the 18th of Super Giants’ innings, Chahal bowled a wide legbreak which pitched outside the off stump of Dushmantha Chameera. It was called a wide. Chahal disagreed and even had a word with the umpire.Related

Vettori and Tahir call for wides to come under DRS umbrella

Chahal did trap the Sri Lankan batter lbw next delivery, but said the extra ball cost him dearly as Marcus Stoinis lofted a six off the final ball of his spell. It nearly affected the match result, too, as Royals managed to win by just three runs.”Definitely. Even umpires are human beings. They can make a mistake, but teams can win by a single run many times,” Chahal told ESPNcricinfo when asked if would want wides referred as part of the two reviews teams had. “That happened with me against Lucknow when the umpire signalled a wide, but when I saw it on replay it was not a wide. But due to that I had to bowl an extra ball and I even got hit for a six off the last ball. It became a seven-ball over and they could score seven runs. As it is T20 is a batsman-dominated game, so if the bowlers get a bit more help, we can do that.”A few weeks later, though, Royals captain Sanju Samson was miffed in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 2, when the on-field umpire Nitin Pandit signalled a wide on three occasions during the penultimate over of the game delivered by Prasidh Krishna. Samson pointed out to Pandit that the batter had moved laterally even before Krishna had released the ball.Sanju Samson has a word with the on-field umpire Nitin Pandit about a few close wide calls, against Kolkata Knight Riders•BCCI

Analysing the incident after the match, which Knight Riders won, ESPNcricinfo experts Daniel Vettori and Imran Tahir agreed that bowlers needed “avenues” to “rectify” umpiring errors through the means of the two reviews. This season, the IPL has added an extra review making it two per innings, something Chahal said was sufficient. “If you want to take a chance, take a chance, but we are giving you only two reviews. We are happy with that.”Taufel, though, remained concerned.”I’m really conscious around trying to turn the art of officiating into a science and seek perfection, whatever that looks like, with decision making,” Taufel told ESPNcricinfo in an interview to be published later this week. “So with wides for example, and here we’re going to, potentially according to you, or according to the player or the debate, take a wide call and throw that back to the third umpire for them to judge on something that might be marginal and is still a judgement call.”Judging a wide, Taufel pointed out, was never an easy job and there are no clear definitions in the laws and playing conditions.”Are you going to be able to overrule as a third umpire what a leg-side wide might look like? That’s a really interesting proposition to throw to a third umpire and say: I definitely think you got that wide wrong. If you look at a ball that cuts across a right-hander from a left-armer (fast bowler), that cuts the wide guideline – that’s a pretty big call to overrule. Can you clearly define for me what conclusive evidence is to overturn a wide both leg-side, off side and height?”And where do you then draw the line as to what a wide is? Because with wides, for example, you still got this opinion around: either could the batsman have played a shot? Has the batsman brought the ball sufficiently within reach? And you are putting them (under) a lot more stress and pressure around those definitions. Of course, if the ball has flicked the bat or the pad, and an umpire’s called a wide – yeah, that’s quite clearly an error. (But) I worry about where this is going to end up. Is everything that an umpire does likely to fall under the Decision Review System?”Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, though, said that questionable calls on wides and height no-balls should be directly dealt by specialist TV umpires and not via DRS review.”I agree totally, because that could be a game-changer,”Shastri told ESPNcricinfo. “The match could go into the last ball and 12-15 runs needed in the last over, a no-ball at that stage could make a lot of difference. You have the third umpire sitting there, you have the technology, use it.”Such an exercise could potentially stretch the match time, which Shastri agreed to, but was not fussed about. “You’d rather have a fair game. If it’s delayed by a minute, so be it. But rather have a fair game so there are no arguments later. Leave it to the third umpire, let him take the decision and let that be final.”Taufel, though, disapproved, saying getting the third umpire involved directly or via DRS, would mean the match would be slowed down and asked if the game was ready for such a “trade off”.”How much time are all these reviews going to take out of the playing time? I remember only last year, some commentators like the late Shane Warne were complaining about how an ODI finished 30 minutes past the scheduled cut off. You cannot have a quick game and also analyse every ball – there is always a trade off.”According to Taufel, bowlers and umpires would find it easier to adjudicate on wides better once the modified MCC Law becomes effective from October 1. Recently, the MCC said it was updating Law 22.1 governing wides to address the increasing challenge batters were posing by moving laterally across the crease.Taufel, who sits on the MCC Laws sub-committee, said the move was to “provide a bit more latitude for the bowler for it not to be called a wide if the batter is going to move their stance while the bowler is running up. And there is more clarity for the umpire about the batter moving in their stance.”

Harmanpreet attributes current form to 'self-talk' before the Sri Lanka tour

“Sometime in between, I was not enjoying because sometimes you take a lot of pressure”

Sruthi Ravindranath07-Jul-2022

Harmanpreet Kaur racked up 119 runs across the three ODIs•Sri Lanka Cricket

India’s white-ball captain Harmanpreet Kaur has attributed her current form with the bat to a bit of “self-talk” and the fact that she has “enjoyed” being in the middle. She is also glad she now has the “freedom” to bowl regularly, something she said wasn’t possible earlier because of the “game plans”.After playing a crucial role in India’s 2-1 win in the T20I series, Harmanpreet racked up 119 runs across the three ODIs, including an 88-ball 75 in the third ODI, to take her team to a clean sweep in her first series as the full-time captain in the format. She bagged Player-of-the-Series awards in both formats. While admitting that she wasn’t enjoying her cricket for a while in the past, she is “relaxed and happy” all the plans worked out well on the tour.”For me, it’s always important that I should enjoy each and every moment,” Harmanpreet said. “Sometime in between, I was not enjoying because sometimes you take a lot of pressure – it happens with anyone. I was going through those things but now I have made a plan that I have to enjoy. Whatever the situation, I’ll try to stay there and give the start the team needs. That’s what I’ve been trying in the last few months.”Moreover, the way the team is responding is something I’m enjoying more. Because when you have experienced players with you, they want to support you in all the parts. Our medium-pacers – I actually wanted to give more opportunities to them. I’m happy they have grabbed that opportunity. We were always depending on spinners in the first few overs but they took the responsibility and gave those results. When whatever you have planned goes your way, you are going to enjoy it. Maybe that was the reason I was more relaxed and happy because everything was going according to our plans [in the series].”Harmanpreet also contributed with the ball in both series, taking two wickets in the three ODIs with her offspin. Out of 121 ODIs she has played so far, she has bowled in 68, taking 31 wickets, but she hinted that she could be bowling more regularly in the coming days. In the third ODI, she bowled five overs and picked the crucial wicket of Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu.”I think before we came here, I had a self-talk that I have to give my 100% and it was important that I get runs in this series,” she said. “I’m very happy I got wickets also because I want to bowl and I was always keen to bowl. I was really happy that I was able to do both things.”I had also told our head coach [Ramesh Powar] that I was available for bowling [earlier] but because of some game plans, I didn’t get to bowl. I was lucky that in the last game [India played at the 2022 World Cup], I got a few overs to bowl. I have been planning for a long time that I should get to bowl [more]. I am glad I was able to get those breakthroughs. I always wanted to bowl and I’m glad I [now] have the freedom to bowl.”Earlier this year, Harmanpreet spoke about being more comfortable batting at No. 4 than No. 5 but on Thursday, she walked in at No. 6. She later revealed that the plan was to bat even lower down the order so that others can get a chance to bat in the middle ahead of the Commonwealth Games, which begin later this month. But she had to come out at No. 6 after India lost the wickets of Shafali Verma and Harleen Deol in space of three balls, leaving them 94 for 4.”We wanted to give chance to our top five batters… if Harleen [Deol] can get some time at the wicket and Richa [Ghosh] also. But we lost two wickets early and I had to go otherwise we were only looking if others can get a chance to bat. The CWG is very important, and for me, it’s important that the batting unit should get enough balls to bat. That’s the reason we shifted my batting order because I got a good amount of batting in this tournament.”She was also impressed with Pooja Vastrakar, who negotiated Sri Lanka’s spin threat and scored an unbeaten 56 off 65 balls from No. 8.”She [Vastrakar] has been showing she can bat also. One thing we discuss in the dressing room is that whoever is going to bat, that person is capable of getting runs for the team [regardless of their batting position] and whoever is bowling can take a wicket. Whoever is in the playing XI is capable of doing both things. Pooja Vastrakar has done really well so far and I think that batting order really suited her and in future, if we need to change something, we will take charge accordingly.”

Rangers make contact to sign "highly-rated" star who could be Bassey 2.0

Glasgow Rangers returned to winning ways over the weekend, yet the Premiership title is surely out of reach for Philippe Clement’s men.

The 3-1 win at Ibrox against St Johnstone may have secured three points, but with the Union Bears walking out after 55 minutes, protesting against the board, the atmosphere at the club is bordering on toxic.

The new CEO, Patrick Stewart, is backing Clement, who will be in charge of the club throughout the transfer window.

With one or two signings likely, who is the Belgian looking to bring to the club?

Rangers eye move for Championship defender

According to Swedish outlet Expressen, Rangers are one of the many clubs that have expressed interest in Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal, with a loan move being touted.

Plenty of Championship and Italian clubs are keen on luring the player away from Burnley, suggesting the Light Blues face stiff competition for his signature.

The report goes on to state that Clement and Co have made contact with Burnley over a potential loan deal, which would certainly help ease the club’s current defensive crisis.

It wouldn’t be the first time that the club have signed a defender from England in recent years. If a move for Ekdal could be as impressive as the one which saw Calvin Bassey move north of the border, then Clement may just strike gold.

Why Rangers could sign Calvin Bassey 2.0 in Hjalmar Ekdal

Bassey arrived in the summer of 2020 to little fanfare. Considered an excellent talent, the Nigerian operated on the periphery during the 2020/21 season, making just 15 appearances.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Due to an injury crisis in defence, Bassey established himself as first choice centre-back the following campaign, playing 50 times for the Gers, reaching the Europa League final and winning the Scottish Cup in the process.

It was a stunning rise, which led to him joining Ajax for around £23m, a club-record sale. While Ekdal may be joining on loan initially, he could have the same impact, arriving from south of the border and starring.

Calvin Bassey

The defender has played just 19 games for Burnley since joining two years ago, but a spell at his previous club Djurgarden was a success.

Indeed, during his final season in the Swedish top flight with the club, Ekdal not only showed his attacking qualities by scoring three goals, but the 26-year-old also averaged an 88% pass success rate, won 61% of his total dues per game and averaged 1.2 tackles each match, showcasing his defensive abilities.

Vincent Kompany once described the Swede as an “intelligent” and “mobile” defender, and it is evident that his skill set could be well suited to the rigours of Scottish football.

The main thing would be getting the defender back to 100% fitness. If Clement can ensure that Ekdal will feature heavily between now and the end of the season, then it is surely a no-brainer to sign him on loan.

Bassey made such a positive impact in a short space of time. The Burnley star may well follow in his footsteps.

Two Ranji Trophy winners, inaugural Under-16 tournament for girls in BCCI's new domestic schedule

Duleep Trophy returns after a three-year hiatus, to run from September 8, as the domestic season opener

Madhya Pradesh are the reigning Ranji Trophy winners•Afzal Jiwani/ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In a move aimed at improving the quality of its first-class competition, the BCCI has decided to split the Ranji Trophy into two categories: Elite and Plate. The tournament is set to run from December 13, 2022, to February 20, 2023, following the conclusion of the white-ball events.Unlike earlier, where all 38 teams would compete for the same trophy, the 2022-23 domestic season will consist of two Ranji Trophy winners. This is to minimise the prospect of mismatches at the knockouts, like we saw earlier this year when Jharkhand amassed a lead of 1008 – the highest-ever in first-class history – over Plate toppers Nagaland in the pre-quarterfinals.Related

As per the new format, 32 Elite teams will be divided into four groups of eight, with the top two from each group qualifying for the quarterfinals. This gives each team at least seven matches in the league phase. In the Plate competition, six teams will play each other once, with the top four making it through to the knockouts. The bottom two teams will feature in a playoff for the fifth and sixth positions.Unlike currently, the topper of the Plate group will not cross over to play an Elite team in a pre-quarterfinal, given they will be competing in a tournament of their own.The two Plate finalists will be promoted to the Elite group for the 2023-24 season, while the bottom two teams of all the four Elite groups combined – factoring in both points and quotient – will be relegated. The return of Duleep Trophy & Irani Cup
The Duleep Trophy has been reintroduced after a three-season gap and will revert to its original format of being a zonal competition. This time, the addition of a new zone from the North-East – along with North, South, East, West and Central – will make it a six-team knockout competition that will kick off the senior men’s domestic calendar from September 8-25.That will be followed by the Irani Cup match between 2021-22 Ranji Trophy champions Madhya Pradesh and a Rest of India squad picked by the national selectors on October 1. The Irani Cup was last played in 2018-19 when Vidarbha beat Rest of India on the basis of a first-innings lead. The white-ball leg
The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 competition, will be held from October 11-November 5, running mostly alongside the T20 World Cup. While it may not help players make a case to be included in the national team, it will remain a platform for them to impress IPL talent scouts. This T20 competition will be followed by the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy.Unlike in the Ranji Trophy where teams will vie for two separate trophies, the white-ball tournaments will not feature a separate Plate division, with the newer domestic teams sprinkled across five different groups based on pre-tournament seedings. The women’s calendar, which generally stretches into April, will now finish in February with the BCCI set to use their March-April window for the Women’s IPL•BCCI

What is in it for women’s cricket?
Quite a lot, which is a great sign given the interest around the sport has heightened following their silver-medal finish at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. For the first time since BCCI took over the running of women’s cricket in 2006, they will be staging an Under-16 tournament for girls. This is a significant step towards identifying a talent pool they can groom for the Women’s Under-19 World Cup. The inaugural edition of this tournament, which has had to be pushed back twice due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be played in the T20 format in January 2023 in South Africa.Equally significant is the reintroduction of the women’s zonal competition – in both T20 and 50-over format – for the seniors after five years. Then, there is also a T20 and 50-over competition for the Under-23s to ensure players who miss the bus at the Under-19s have another level to aim for. When does the women’s season begin?
With the Women’s T20 World Cup set to be staged in South Africa in February next year, the season begins with the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy from October 11-November 5. This will be followed by the Inter-zonal T20s and a Challenger Trophy, all aimed at increasing match-time for the players, which will then give selectors an opportunity to widen their choices before picking their World Cup squad. The women’s calendar, which generally stretches well into April, will now finish in February with the BCCI set to use their March-April window for the inaugural Women’s IPL, the plans for which are underway according to Sourav Ganguly. The BCCI is contemplating a five or six-team tournament, to begin with, and the matter will be discussed at the BCCI AGM in September.
