Club now in talks to sign Rangers "fighter" instead of Celtic star Taylor

Besiktas have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of a Rangers “fighter” during the January transfer window, with talks underway over the move after they originally were linked with rival Old Firm star Greg Taylor.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers were beaten in heartbreaking fashion away to Manchester United on Thursday evening, losing 2-1 in stoppage time in their Europa League clash at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes scored a last-gasp winner, just when it looked as though Cyriel Dessers had earned Philippe Clement’s side a point late in the day with a superb strike.

Next up for Rangers is a Scottish Premiership clash away to Dundee United on Sunday lunchtime, as they look to keep their admittedly slim title hopes alive. They trail Celtic by 13 points heading into the weekend action, highlighting why they now need to find an unstoppable run of form over the next four months.

There is still time for the Gers to make new signings in January, in order to bolster their chances of both league and European success, with players continuing to be linked with moves to Ibrox. Timothy Fosu-Mensah is one player who has been mentioned as an option, with the 27-year-old a free agent after leaving Bayer Leverkusen at the end of last season.

Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell has been backed to move to Rangers, too, with the 26-year-old spending the first half of the campaign on loan at Charlton Athletic. Now, an Ibrox exit update has emerged, in what could be a potential blow for Clement.

Rangers "fighter" could leave in January

According to a new report from Aksam [via Sport Witness], Besiktas have opened talks with Rangers over the signing of Ridvan Yilmaz this month, while they have also shown interest in Celtic’s Taylor.

The Turkish side want to sign a new left-back before the current transfer window reaches its conclusion, and have turned attention more seriously to the Gers full back over the Hoops stalwart. One key to the potential signing is whether new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer approves the deal.

Losing Yilmaz would be a setback midway through the campaign for Rangers, considering he has started their last six Scottish Premiership matches, as well as playing all 90 minutes away to United on Thursday.

The Turk has been described as a “fighter” by Clement, who clearly sees his worth as a player, even though he hasn’t always been a key starter, not helped by injury problems.

Still only 23, it would be a shame to see Yilmaz depart before his best years arrive, but the lure of moving back to his former club could be too great to turn down, having spent three years there between 2019 and 2022.

Hopefully, Rangers still manage to retain the services of the seven-cap Turkey international, but as things stand, it doesn’t look too positive. Signing a replacement could also be tough before the window ends, which would be a further blow.

Tottenham identify "class" £4.5m-a-year coach to potentially replace Ange

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou is facing the largest amount of pressure since he joined the club from Celtic in 2023, with Spurs sliding to 15th in the Premier League table after their 3-2 loss at Everton last weekend.

Ange Postecoglou criticised amid torrid Tottenham form

The Lilywhites showed real spirit to come back from 3-0 down at half-time on Merseyside, clawing back the deficit to just one, but the defeat was Postecoglou’s fifth in Spurs’ last six top flight matches and their 12th of the season overall.

Tottenham plot bid for £25m Juventus target after losing Kolo Muani race

Until now, Tottenham hadn’t lost that number of games by this stage of a season for decades, and Postecoglou has been criticised for his one-note approach to matches in that time, whilst also failing to address his side’s leaky defence with a needed tactical tweak.

It simply must be said that Postecoglou has been dealt a plethora of injuries to key first-team players, including star striker Dominic Solanke just before their loss to Everton, and this has left the under-fire Spurs boss with precious few options.

Brennan Johnson is also set to be sidelined for weeks after he picked up an injury in their North London Derby loss to Arsenal last week, but Sky Sports pundit Jamie O’Hara says Postecoglou should be given his P45 regardless.

Reports suggest that Postecoglou is under no immediate threat of the Tottenham sack, but the 59-year-old faces a crucial week and this could well change if results continue in this manner.

Tottenham could sound out ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzic if they decide to part company with Postecoglou, according to some reports, while another media source has now linked them with Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

Tottenham identify Thomas Frank as a "top" managerial target

According to TEAMtalk, the Bees boss is greatly admired by Tottenham’s hierarchy, following a productive few years at the Gtech Community Stadium where he has worked wonders on a shoestring budget.

The £4.5 million-per-year coach guided Brentford to promotion back in 2021, and they’ve never really been under any real threat of relegation since. Their highest league finish of ninth in 2022/2023 is impressive given the lack of resources available to Frank, and this has caught eyes at N17.

It is believed Frank would be a “top” target for Tottenham if they decide to sack Postecoglou. TEAMtalk add that chairman Daniel Levy and co even considered the 51-year-old as an option to succeed Antonio Conte, before they eventually landed on Postecoglou, and Frank has been praised as a “class act” by members of the media (Adam Keys).

The Dane is also expected to leave Brentford at the end of the season, meaning he could be attainable.

Spirit bowlers use local know-how to beat Brave at home

Thompson plus Hampshire crew build on Bell-Drummond innings as Whiteley fifty is in vain

London Spirit’s Hampshire Hawks bowling attack used their Ageas Bowl insider knowledge to end Southern Brave’s home domination.Daniel Bell-Drummond had clocked 46 to help Spirit to 147 before Liam Dawson, Brad Wheal, Mason Crane and Nathan Ellis produced the type of defence that won the Hawks the Vitality Blast earlier this summer.Dawson, Wheal and Crane all picked up a wicket-a-piece, along with non-Hawk Jordan Thompson’s 2 for 32, as Ross Whiteley’s 52 wasn’t enough and Brave fell nine runs short.Spirit are three from three in the tournament, having taken home the wooden spoon last year, while holders Brave lost their 100 per cent record at the Ageas Bowl. The intrigue for the Brave chase was how James Vince would go against his Hawks bowling attack. That remained unanswered as another former Hampshire team-mate Glenn Maxwell bowled him first ball – the unlucky 13th golden duck of his T20/Hundred career.Brave’s start got worse when Quinton de Kock and Alex Davies met in the middle of the pitch with the stumps broken for a clumsy run out to leave the hosts 4 for 2.Davies got the scoreboard moving upwards with a four-six combo off Dawson, with Marcus Stoinis striking through the covers and straight before running past spinner Dawson to be stumped.Davies departed for 36 when Crane tempted him to slog to long on, while Wheal got Tim David skewing to extra cover.Whiteley, another Hampshire player, had quietly biffed his way to a 32-ball 50, brought up with a perfectly timed clip to the leg side but was bowled by Thompson’s next ball.Brave needed 27 runs off the last 10-ball end. But despite James Fuller pulling that down to 12 off three, Thompson had him slicing to deep point as Spirit’s 12-month turnaround continued.Earlier, Spirit chose to bat and were indebted to Maxwell, Bell-Drummond and Kieron Pollard’s contributions to get them up to 147, eight runs shy of their female team-mates’ losing total earlier in the day.Maxwell and Bell-Drummond were joined at the crease after Adam Rossington had lifted Michael Hogan to mid-off and Zak Crawley swung to deep square leg to leave Spirit 29 for 2.The duo’s 39 together got rolling with a pair of Maxwell fours, the first an effortless drive through the covers before opening up the offside again two balls later. He then used his upper body strength to dispatch Jacob Lintott over deep midwicket. The Australian pumped three more boundaries before mullering straight at mid-off, and then Eoin Morgan run out backing up at the non-striker’s end.Bell-Drummond, now in a 53-run partnership with Pollard, had struggled to get going with 18 off 21 balls, and been dropped twice, albeit both very difficult chances. The sluggish start peaked with five fours and a towering six over long-on before he fell for 46 off 33 balls when he was run out. In the last 13 deliveries, Thompson was yorked by Hogan with 24 runs coming.

Alastair Cook sets course as Essex wend their way into ascendency

Matt Critchley ends day unbeaten on 80 as Kent bowlers struggle for rewards

Essex 327 for 4 (Critchley 80*, Cook 78, Westley 54) vs Kent You could imagine the conversation among Canterbury spectators of a certain age. “The funny thing is I can never remember where I put my car keys but I can remember when I last saw Kent play Championship cricket as if it was yesterday.” It really was that long ago – July 14 to be precise, a distant time to be alive when there were still six candidates for Conservative leader and Penny Mordaunt was widely held to be on a bit of a surge.Nobody is about to claim Kent and Essex are on a surge, not as far as the Championship is concerned at least. Essex are as mid-table as mid-table can be and their challenge during September is to keep it respectable. Kent began fourth-bottom, 15 points above the bottom two, which we habitually assume to be the relegation positions even though it would take a soothsayer with the talent of Elizabeth Barton to predict what the relegation positions actually are.Barton worked on the estates of the Archbishop of Canterbury and her prophecies of impending doom after she had fallen ill both endeared her to the masses and infuriated the authorities. That reputation suggests she would have been a very sound choice to announce the exact future of county cricket, except that she was hanged at Tyburn in 1534, which to be fair is a tactic the ECB has yet to adopt to silence the prophets of doom.Canterbury has a reputation of being one of county cricket’s more somnolent crowds, but they were strikingly responsive on the first day, as if 55 days without Championship cricket had left them keen to show their appreciation. It was a bit of a slog for Kent, who conceded 327 for 4 on a batter-friendly pitch and a sultry day, and they won’t object too much if worsening weather as the games progress brings a succession of draws across the country.Kent have also reached the Royal London Cup final in the interim and it is good that they have announced that the Trent Bridge final will be contested by the squad that achieved it with no recourse to those – no lesser person than the captain, Sam Billings, among them – who have been absent for the Hundred. The long stretch without Championship cricket does at least allow Alastair Cook time to give thought to the family farm in Bedfordshire – the art of sheep dipping has been one thing on his mind according to an appearance on. Cook plays no other format but four-day cricket these days, but he slipped back into the old routine with 78 from 157 balls before reaching at a wide one from Grant Stewart and edging to first slip. He must address that itch although leaping in after the sheep might be taking it too far. Stewart, Kent’s most economical bowler, almost had him caught at second slip on 44 when the ball reached Jordan Cox on the half-volley and deserved his wicket.Cook failed to reach 1000 first-class runs in 2019, the last proper Championship season, but he has 813 at 47.82 now, which places him ninth among Division One run-makers and he still has a maximum of seven innings for normal service to be resumed. If his appetite holds, he has years in him.Cook was a calming influence for those who – even before they consider the cricket – have felt too old to cope with the Hundred’s green and pink colour palette and determinedly modern font (the “Hundred Display”), both of which were held to take us all on “a high-octane journey” (true enough) and to be “warm and family friendly” (a case of designers telling the suits what they want to hear). When Cook leant gently on the sixth ball of the morning, from Matt Quinn, and it trundled almost apologetically through mid-off to the boundary, it was less high-octane than an ultra-responsible exercise in energy conservation. The morning belonged to Cook and his opening partner, Nick Browne, but Quinn held a fast return catch to remove Browne. Tom Westley looked in good trim, but he was surely aghast at the manner of his dismissal for 54. After thick-edging Harry Podmore to deep third, he jogged the first two runs at a sedate pace, only to develop an inexplicable thirst for a third on Joe Denly’s arm and Billings collected an accurate throw to demolish all three stumps with a cry of triumph. Billings departed later with a groin injury with Ollie Robinson deputising. With Dan Lawrence also yorked by Daniel Bell-Drummond’s floaty outswinger, and listing badly to leg in the process, at 221 for 4 Kent had an opportunity to turn the day in their favour, but the second new ball brought no alarms and instead Matt Critchley, who had been dropped on 6 by Ben Compton at short leg just before tea, played with growing elan, making particularly light work of Jack Leaning. Along with Feroze Khushi, he reasserted Essex’s authority in the final session in an unbroken stand of 106.

Amazing De Bruyne replacement: Man City could make late "exciting" signing

Will Manchester City continue their January spending spree?

So far, the Sky Blues have spent around £130m on a quartet of new recruits: Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush both made their debuts from the start against Chelsea on Saturday, Vitor Reis was an unused substitute, while Juma Bah has arrived from Real Valladolid, albeit he will spend the rest of the season on loan at Lens.

However, Pep Guardiola’s team are not done there, currently in a battle to sign one of Europe’s hottest prospects.

Man City chasing 18-year-old star

As reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester City, as well as Arsenal and Aston Villa, are all attempting to sign Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Nypan was reportedly in attendance at the Etihad on Saturday, but Miguel Delaney of the Independent believes Arsenal are currently “leading the race” to sign the 18-year-old after an update on Monday evening.

James McNicholas and David Ornstein of the Athletic report that the Norwegian is yet to make a “firm decision”, albeit Ed Aarons of the Guardian claims this decision is “close” to being finalised, adding a fee of £10m is expected.

So, who is Sverre Nypan, and why are some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs after him?

How Sverre Nypan compares to Kevin De Bruyne

Back in November 2022, at the age of just 15 years and 322 days, Nypan became the youngest player to ever feature for Rosenborg and the youngest player to ever play in an Eliteserien match, before becoming the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer, on target against champions Bodø/Glimt at Aspmyra in the Arctic Circle in May 2023.

Despite having only just celebrated his 18th birthday as recently as the week before Christmas, he’s now made 60 appearances for the Troillongan, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists, bagging a first-ever senior hat-trick against Lillestrøm back in August.

Given the way he’s adapted to senior football at such a young age, it’s hardly a surprise to note that Nypan’s performances in Norway have led to him receiving widespread praise and admiration.

James Westwood of Goal described him as “extremely exciting”, Jacek Kulig from Football Talent Scout claims he has a “huge future ahead”, while Ben Mattinson on Twitter believes he possesses “world-class potential”.

Meanwhile, in the Guardian’s Next Generation of 2023 series, Michael Yokhin praised Nypan’s “superb ability to read the game and vision”, which was on display when Rosenborg beat Heart of Midlothian 2-1 in a Europa Conference League qualifier at Lerkendal Stadion in August 2023, with the teenager providing both assists.

So, whoever does manage to snap up Nypan this month will have a gem on their hands, with Man City’s plan, as outlined by Gary Jacob of the Times, to loan him out to Girona, also owned by CFG, before integrating him into the first team at a later date, so will the teenager choose to join the Premier League champions?

Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne celebrates scoring their second goal with teammates

If he does, he could well be the dream long-term replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. That said, with former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp believing the Belgian is the “Premier League’s best-ever midfielder”, there would be big shoes to fill.

Though, he is out of contract in the summer so a replacement will be needed. Nypan could be that man. Let’s see how the duo compare.

Obviously, comparing Nypan to De Bruyne is holding him to an astronomically high standard, but he does compare favourably, racking up higher goals per 90, albeit the Belgian’s assists per 90 is almost four times as high.

Nevertheless, only 14 players scored more Eliteserien goals than the 18-year-old last season, while he ranked sixth for assists in Norway’s top-flight, as well as 13th for shots.

Everything you hear, read and see about Nypan suggests he is a future superstar in the making, suggesting he would be an excellent signing for Man City as they attempt to replace the goals and assists of De Bruyne.

The teenager has already shown he can score and assist regularly so it’s certainly worth exploring a move.
