Tom Haines' twin tons in a day, Ali Orr's 185* turn the tables on Glamorgan

Duo put on 311 together in only 53 overs as Sussex, following on, forge ahead without loss

Captain Tom Haines completed two unbeaten hundreds in the same day and opening partner Ali Orr thrashed a magnificent 185 not out to transform Sussex’s fortunes and end Glamorgan’s promotion hopes in the LV= County Championship.Haines, who had resumed on 34, became the first Sussex batsman since 2014 to carry his bat with 108 but Sussex were still bowled out for 258 in their first innings and followed on 275 behind at the 1st Central County Ground. At that stage of the third day Glamorgan were firmly on course for the victory that would have kept their hopes of climbing out of Division Two alive. But as it emerged that rivals Middlesex were getting themselves into an unbeatable position against Worcestershire to claim second spot, Glamorgan spirits seemed to sag and after tea and Orr and Haines took full advantage.By stumps they had put on a magnificent 311 together in only 53 overs, with 190 of their runs coming in boundaries. Orr finished 185 not out (163 balls, 18 fours, nine sixes) and Haines will resume on 121 (157 balls, 16 fours) with Sussex now 37 runs in front after a remarkable day produced 481 runs.Earlier, Haines and 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Charlie Tear had provided the only resistance as Sussex twice collapsed, losing three wickets for 18 runs in the first hour before their last four went for six runs in just four overs.James Harris sparked the first collapse when he picked up two wickets in four balls when Tom Clark was caught behind off a flat-footed waft and Dan Ibrahim unwisely tried to pull a ball outside off stump which cannoned into his stumps. Fynn Hudson-Prentice was also guilty of a poor shot as he gave Ajaz Patel an easy return catch before Haines and Tear came together. They added 95 for the seventh wicket with Haines reaching his second hundred of the season, having made 234 against Derbyshire back in April.Tear caught the eye too, and at one stage he hit six successive balls from New Zealand Test spinner Patel to the boundary as he made his maiden half-century in only his second appearance. But when Tear played back to Tim van der Gugten Sussex folded again with the last three batters all out for ducks. Haines, who offered one sharp chance to David Lloyd at slip, walked off to a standing ovation having faced 169 balls and hit 14 fours.Ten minutes later he was walking out to bat again and soon he and Orr were hurtling along at seven runs an over as Glamorgan’s five-man attack toiled for a breakthrough.Orr reached his fifty by hoisting Patel out of the ground for six and he needed just 38 more balls to get to his century, hitting Patel for three successive sixes at one stage. Just 41 deliveries were needed for his next 50 runs and the next milestone ticked off was his career-best 141 which he passed with a reverse sweep to the boundary off Patel, whose eight overs so far have gone for 78.He wasn’t the only bowler to suffer on a pitch offering little assistance. Orr passed 1,000 runs for the season when he got to 153 and shortly afterwards Haines was raising his bat for the second time in the day to acknowledge a standing ovation after reaching his century. He is the first Sussex batter to score two hundreds in the same match since Mike Yardy against Yorkshire in 2011.At stumps the two left-handers had set a record partnership for any wicket against Glamorgan after passing Luke Wells and Ben Brown’s 294 at Hove in 2016 while there have only been three bigger opening stands in the county’s history.

Chelsea pushing for their £38m defender to make deadline-busting Spurs move

Tottenham Hotspur have now restarted talks to sign an “exceptional” defender on loan, and his own club are pushing for the move, according to a report.

Tel deal back on as Spurs seek double deadline day signing

At one stage, it looked as though Tottenham’s hopes of signing Mathys Tel were fading away, with the Bayern Munich forward previously making it clear he was unwilling to make the move to north London, despite Daniel Levy travelling to hold talks. However, Tel has now reconsidered his stance and is en-route to London to complete a medical ahead of a loan deal until the end of the campaign.

The 19-year-old has been pictured on a plane with agent Gadiri Camara, with the transfer saga taking a major twist over the past few hours, but he is not the only player Spurs want through the door before the 11pm deadline.

Bayern Munich'sMathysTelin action with Slovan Bratislava's Cesar Blackman

Ange Postecoglou’s side had a £70m bid for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi rejected earlier today, with the manager keen to bolster his struggling defence, while there has also been interest in Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

At one stage, the deal for Disasi looked like it was off, but The Boot Room report Tottenham have restarted talks to sign the defender, and there is seemingly a decent chance he completes a move across the capital. That is because Chelsea are now pushing hard for the centre-back to join Spurs, rather than Aston Villa, despite the player himself previously making it clear he would rather make the move to Villa Park.

The Blues expect the 26-year-old to leave before the transfer deadline, and they would rather ship him out on loan to their London rivals, as they view Villa as direct competition for the Champions League places.

Despite an impressive victory at Brentford, Postecoglou’s side are still languishing in 14th and unlikely to push for the European places.

Sky Sports journalist drops live TV Mathys Tel to Tottenham transfer update

There has been a key update on Spurs’ pursuit of the attacker…

ByDominic Lund Feb 3, 2025 Not an ideal situation for Spurs

Tottenham chiefs have already found themselves in a position where a player has been uninterested in joining, before making a U-turn, with Tel now set to complete a move despite a lack of interest just a few days ago.

It seems as though a move to N17 is also a second-choice option for Disasi, which is far from ideal for Spurs, and they should be sure to only pursue a move if he is definitely committed, rather than simply finding himself forced out at Chelsea.

If the Lilywhites get the best version of the Chelsea man, there are clear signs he could help shore up their leaky backline, having previously been lauded as “exceptional” by members of the media.

Amid the ongoing injury crisis Postecoglou is faced with, he must bring in a new defender in the next few hours, and Disasi’s versatility would be an added bonus, with the Frenchman also capable of slotting in at right-back, having featured in that area 11 times this season.

Dravid: Difficult to let Indian players play overseas T20 leagues

The India coach was asked whether the lack of BBL experience was a factor in India losing the semi-final to England

Sidharth Monga10-Nov-20221:39

Dravid: ‘If you allow Indian players to play overseas leagues, our domestic cricket will be finished’

India can’t send their players to overseas T20 leagues, their coach Rahul Dravid has said, because a lot of these leagues are played during India’s domestic season. The topic came up when Dravid was asked whether India had been at a disadvantage during their semi-final defeat to England because their players don’t have any BBL experience in Australia, while England’s do, and if India would look to send players to the BBL in the future. The tenuous link between the experience of playing the BBL in the Australian summer and doing well there in early spring conditions notwithstanding.”I mean, sure, there’s no doubt about it, the fact that England… a lot of their players have come here and played in this tournament,” Dravid said, “and it certainly showed. It’s tough. I think it’s very difficult for Indian cricket because a lot of these tournaments happen right at the peak of our season.Related

“I think it’s a huge challenge for us. Yes, I think a lot of our boys maybe do miss out on the opportunities of playing in a lot of these leagues, but if you were to… it’s really up to the BCCI to make that decision, but the thing is it’s right in the middle of our season, and with the kind of demand there would be for Indian players, if you allowed all the Indian players to play in these leagues, we would not have a domestic cricket. Our domestic cricket, our Ranji Trophy, would be finished, and that would mean Test cricket would be finished.”I know a lot of people talk about it [no Indians in overseas T20 leagues], but we have to be very careful when we… we have to understand the challenges that Indian cricket faces or the BCCI would face in a situation like this. You’d see all our boys… like a lot of boys being asked to play leagues right bang in the middle of our season. We’ve seen what that’s done to West Indian cricket, and I would definitely not want Indian cricket to go that way. It would certainly affect our Ranji Trophy; it would affect Test cricket. Indian boys playing Test cricket is pretty important for the Test game as well, I would think.”England’s captain Jos Buttler was also asked about this, but he quickly went on to praise Alex Hales, who ran away with the chase on the night. “I think Alex would have played as much Big Bash cricket as anyone, and his performance tonight was amazing,” Buttler said. “I think it’s some huge strengths of his, square of the wicket, which obviously today on this kind of grounds really is great. No, he’s a tough guy to bowl at. He’s been obviously performing really well for a long period of time. Unfortunately hasn’t been able to get back in due to other players playing brilliantly well as well. A few circumstances and that opportunity has arisen, and he’s come in, and the last three matches especially, his form has been brilliant.”The topic of participation in overseas T20 leagues has been a sticky one in Indian cricket. The bigger fear perhaps is that even if the BCCI allows only those with no ambition for a place in first-class cricket to play these T20 leagues, it will result in more and more players opting not to play first-class cricket, thus weakening the structure that has resulted in a formidable Test side. Other teams do have to deal with this friction, too, but the demand for Indian players for commercial reasons would be much higher.

Forward has "already decided" to join Arsenal with signing "imminent"

A very audacious claim has surfaced from Europe, with Arsenal believed to be closing in on the signing of a forward for manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal suffer attacking shortage after injuries to first team stars

The Gunners were forced to line up with a front three of previously unfancied loanee Raheem Sterling, highly-rated teenager Ethan Nwaneri and usual super sub Leandro Trossard against Leicester City this afternoon – eventually calling on Mikel Merino to settle the match.

With Jesus not back until next season alongside Havertz, Arteta’s only real striking option for the foreseeable is Sterling, and the former Man City star must now prove why Arsenal elected to sign him on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea last summer.

Arteta refused to rule out signing a free agent for Arsenal, before their match at the King Power Stadium, but the options at their disposal in that regard are barren, to say the least.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetaapplauds fans after the match

Interim sporting director Jason Ayto and co will be very eager to ensure that Arsenal are not thrust into a position where they’re this short on attackers next campaign, as they will be looking to mount another Premier League title challenge.

In terms of their top forward targets, one name who’s refusing to go away is Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams.

The £200,000-per-week Spain star played a major role in his country’s run to Euro 2024 glory last year, after he bagged a very impressive 19 assists in all competitions for Bilbao last season.

He hasn’t exactly matched that figure so far this term, but the 22-year-old remains a player high on the their radar heading into this summer. Reports suggest that Arsenal are prepared to pay Williams’ £48 million release clause, with Spanish news outlet Carpetas Blaugranas now making a very bold claim of their own.

Nico Williams decides to join Arsenal with signing "imminent"

According to their information, Williams has “already made” his decision to join Arsenal this summer. They write that his signing is “imminent” and could become official “in the coming days” – which comes as quite the statement.

This follows an accelerated effort by the north Londoners to land him “in recent days”, with Arteta viewing him as a “key” potential addition at N5. Carpetas Blaugranas adds that only the “official confirmation” is missing, as Arsenal beat Barcelona in the race for his signature.

The news website appear convinced that Williams is set to make a move to the Emirates Stadium, and it is believed the opportunity to play Premier League football has proved “decisive” in his thinking.

Williams is also said to have informed Spain teammate Yamine Lamal of this looming Arsenal move. Time will tell whether the Basque-native does end up in Arteta’s clutches, but the prospect of him putting pen to paper is a very enticing one.

Australia look to shut out the noise as West Indies face 25 years of history against them

The home side have a settled Test XI while the visitors’ batting needs to give their quicks a chance

Holder: We’ve put the T20 WC behind us, the focus is on Test cricket

Big PictureFor the first time in nearly seven years, two sides with a great history meet in Test cricket. That history has been sadly one-sided for a long time, but this is an overdue meeting for Australia and West Indies. The last time West Indies won a Test on these shores was back in 1997 in Perth – the WACA version – when Brian Lara scored a century, and Curtly Ambrose got one to roll along the deck to Greg Blewett from one of the infamous cracks. West Indies’ last Test victory against Australia was in 2003, when they chased a world record 418 in Antigua.West Indies could field four players in their XI who were part of the side that played a damp affair from the two teams’ last meeting, which was in Sydney in early 2016: Kraigg Brathwaite, now the captain; his predecessor Jason Holder; Jermaine Blackwood, and Kemar Roach. But for most, this will be a new experience. And that may not be a bad thing.Related

The West Indies quicks who could give Australia the hurry-up

Holder urges WI quicks to not get 'carried away seeing carry, bounce'

Few give them a chance in this series – and it would be a surprise if it was anything other than 2-0 to Australia – but West Indies’ Test cricket has shown improvement, albeit mostly at home. However, revivals have to start somewhere. It may sound defeatist, but if they can compete in these two matches, it could provide more building blocks for the future. Their pace attack has the potential to cause problems; it will likely come down to whether they can put enough runs on the board to apply some pressure.Even though Australia lost their most recent Test – against Sri Lanka in Galle – they are in good shape in the format, as witnessed by the XI being entirely predictable. They are in a very strong position to reach the World Test Championship final – but be careful of those over rates – and a summer of victories will further strengthen their cause. This will be Perth’s first Test since the 2019-20 season when they hosted New Zealand in a day-night game, and it is just the second match at the venue with India having played the year before in an absorbing contest on a spicy pitch. It would be nice to think both those things can be repeated this time. There will be plenty of interest in Tagenarine Chanderpaul•Getty Images

Australia: LWWDD
West Indies: WWWDDIn the spotlightSteven Smith has found his hands, feet, stance, grip…everything sounds as though it is working perfectly for him, as good as it has been since around 2016. It is a scary prospect for opposition bowlers because Smith has still averaged 61 in Tests since then, albeit the last couple of years have been more of a struggle. The signs were promising in the ODIs against England but he may have to be on his guard on a lively Perth pitch. Still, it feels like it could be a summer of runs for Smith. The surname will be familiar. The stance may bring back memories. A few of the shots, too. And he marks his guard with the bail. But Tagenarine Chanderpaul wants to be his own man. At 26, he has had to bide his time for a Test debut, but this year his weight of runs have made an unquestionable case. Chanderpaul backed that up with a terrific double of 119 and 56 against Prime Minister’s XI in the pratice match. Australia’s bowling attack will be another level of the challenge, but he looks to have the game.Josh Hazlewood returns to the side, having missed the last four Tests•Getty Images

Team newsThis XI, confirmed by Australia, could have been picked weeks ago: Josh Hazlewood returns to the side, having missed the last four Tests due to requirements as per conditions in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and four Ashes Tests because of injury before that. Scott Boland will have to wait to build on his bowling average of 9.55.Australia: 1 David Warner, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodBrathwaite confirmed that Chanderpaul would make his debut and that Raymon Reifer was ruled out through injury. Beyond that, West Indies will name their side tomorrow. But the good news was that Blackwood and Jayden Seales were fine after brief scares during training on Monday. The likelihood is four quicks supported by Roston Chase’s offspin.West Indies (possible): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 Tagnarine Chanderpaul, 3 Nkrumah Bonner, 4 Kyle Mayers, 5 Jermaine Blackwood, 6 Roston Chase, 7 Jason Holder, 8 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Jayden SealesPitch and conditionsPerth. Hot. Pace. Bounce. Cracks. We’ll get some of that for sure, the first day is set to be 35 degrees, and there is a chance for all of them. The pitches for the T20 World Cup had plenty of life – the India vs South Africa contest was perhaps the best indicator, given the bowling attacks on display – although it is not quite as early in the season now. On the eve of the match, the curator said he had left 12mm of grass on the surface although that may get a trim before the toss. It is also worth noting Nathan Lyon’s excellent record at the Optus Stadium, where he has taken 14 wickets at 15.50 in two matches.Stats and trivia Pat Cummins needs one wicket to reach 200 in Tests, and go level with Jeff Thomson, while Kemar Roach requires eight to go past Joel Garner and become West Indies’ fifth-leading wicket-taker. Steven Smith needs one century to go level with Don Bradman on 29.A few of the West Indies players who were part of the 1997 win in Perth will be at this game: Phil Simmons is in his last series as coach, while Ian Bishop and Brian Lara will be commentators. Carl Hooper is also involved in Australian cricket this season as an assistant coach with Adelaide Strikers.Quotes”I feel like there’s so many good things going on at the moment, especially this Test team [being] No.1 in the world. It’s disappointing sometimes the focus gets drawn to off-field issues, but it hasn’t really affected our team.”
“Our long-form cricket has really developed. It’s really good signs to see a lot of our players actually developing at the rate we want them to develop. This is not going to be an easy tour. But…this is a tour that a lot of people make their name.”

Leeds may regret selling ‘one of the PL’s most underrated players’ for £6m

Leeds United have endured great success in the transfer market, undoubtedly aiding their chances of securing Championship promotion under Daniel Farke.

Jayden Bogle arrived in a £5m deal from Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United over the summer, subsequently nailing down the right-back position as his own as a result of his tremendous displays.

The 24-year-old has registered four goals and two assists despite his defensive roles, helping the Whites boast the best-attacking record in the division to date.

Whilst he may only be at Elland Road temporarily, winger Manor Solomon has filled the void of Crysencio Summerville perfectly, notching 14 combined goal contributions – the joint fifth most in the division.

However, despite the impact of the current first-team stars, the big-money departures of various academy graduates over the years have certainly helped the club recruit as well as they have done.

Leeds United’s biggest academy departures

Midfielder Kalvin Phillips emerged into the first team ranks as a baby-faced teenager back in 2016, with very few supporters anticipating the rise he would’ve endured at Elland Road.

Despite being a more advanced player as a youngster, Marcelo Bielsa utilised him as a deep-lying option, leading to him racking up just shy of 250 appearances before his £45m move to Manchester City in 2022.

Archie Gray is another example of the calibre of the player who has made a name for himself after spending the vast majority of his younger years at Thorp Arch, playing an influential role in the Championship last season.

Despite his tender age of just 17 at the time, he featured in a variety of roles, such as either full-back or his preferred central midfield position – amassing 52 appearances before his £40m transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

Whilst the aforementioned pair have undoubtedly brought in the most amount of money after their development, one other academy star was sold on the cheap a few years ago – subsequently taking his game to the next level after his move.

The former Leeds gem who’s now starring in the PL

With the club edging ever closer to a return to the Premier League after a two-year absence, it presents the opportunity of once again facing the likes of Phillips and Gray given their departures from their boyhood side.

Should they go all the way and secure promotion at the end of May, it could also see them come up against another academy gem in the form of Lewis Cook, who’s still plying his trade for Bournemouth.

Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook

The now 28-year-old made his breakthrough into the first team back in the 2014/15 campaign, ending his first season at Elland Road with 38 appearances across all competitions – featuring for various England youth levels as a result.

He would make an additional 47 appearances the following campaign, taking his total to 85 games for the Whites – claiming the EFL’s Young Player of the Year award in what would be his final year at the club.

Cook would move to Bournemouth in a £6m deal in the summer of 2016, becoming a key player in their unexpected push for a Champions League place this season.

He’s registered over 250 appearances for the Cherries after his bargain move to the Vitality, doing so whilst suffering two separate ACL injuries, showcasing how pivotal he’s been to Andoni Iraola’s success on the South Coast.

He’s made 28 appearances in 2024/25, with the majority coming out of position at right-back, leading to one social media creator dubbing him “one of the most underrated players in the Premier League”.

Given the Cherries’ success in recent months, most of the credit has been dished out to the two centre-backs and forward line, with Cook certainly going under the radar with his efforts in England’s top flight.

Such a rise is hardly expected given the form he demonstrated at Leeds as a teenager, with the £6m fee the club sold him undoubtedly a bargain amid his performances for the Premier League outfit.

However, at the time, the prospect of top-flight football was too good to turn down for the youngster, with Leeds doing the right thing in not standing in his way – but there’s no denying they did so with an ounce of reluctance.

It’s great to see his rise after such a promising start to his career which was at one stage plagued by injuries – hopefully getting the opportunity to feature amongst Europe’s elite in the coming months, but there’s no denying that the fanbase wishes he was doing so at Elland Road rather than the Vitality.
