Stuart Broad fires Ashes warning as new outswinger outsmarts Middlesex

“It’s designed for Marnus and Smith,” says veteran seamer of latest action tweak

Stuart Broad, bopping around Lord’s in Nottinghamshire stash. Stuart Broad posting candid shots of a ground he’s playing at for the 29th time in his career to his Instagram story. Stuart Broad, commuting in from Wimbledon, on the underground for the first two days of this fixture with Middlesex, and probably again on Sunday after driving in on Saturday, given it’s the London Marathon. He’ll take a view in the morning. For those that lament county cricket’s loss of quaintness, Broad has spent the last three days embodying the modern oddities it still harbours. And he made a clear distinction that, whatever tweeness remains in this thing we all care for, imperfections and all, it does not need to be dismissed as irreverent whimsy. Everything that happened counted, everything that happened mattered. With 4 for 68, the veteran England seamer led Nottinghamshire to a 90-run first-innings lead which swelled to 248 by stumps. Through 22 overs, the 36-year-old stepped up his tapering for an international schedule of six Tests across seven weeks – two of them back here at Lord’s – with an Ashes series in full view for one of its recurring main characters.Having picked up Pieter Malan with the final ball on Friday, Broad’s gutting of a spluttering Middlesex engine room contained nuggets of things to come. Most notably an outswinger brought about by technical changes workshopped with Notts bowling coach Kevin Shine – primarily through holding his bowling hand higher to allow smoother flow into release.Last week’s uprooting of Cameron Bancroft’s off stump was exactly this, leaving Broad encouraged at its development. It is a developing weapon in his armoury with other, higher-profile Australians in its sights.”It’s designed, to be honest, for Marnus [Labuschagne] and [Steve] Smith,” Broad said. “It’s the reason I wanted to change something, to try and bring their outside edge in more.”My stock delivery will always be wobble seam trying to nip back on off stump, because I think that’s the most dangerous ball. But to those guys, I think dragging them across with away swing is important. So this action tweak is pretty much designed at those two, and it was good to see it really swinging away today.”Bar a yorker to Luke Hollman that swung into the left-hander to trap him lbw, the delivery was mostly a prop, dragging the odd right-hander outside off stump with a 2023 Dukes ball far better than 2022’s. “It couldn’t be any worse, to be honest,” Broad said.At present, he is down for two more Championship matches before the Ireland Test at the start of June. Notts have the next round off, before hosting Lancashire and Essex at Trent Bridge. James Anderson, currently toiling on a flat one against Somerset, messaged Broad on Saturday with an early request for a green seamer. Alas, for all Broad’s pull, that decision rests in someone else’s hands. But the aims of doing right for Notts and himself – and England – run parallel over the next month.”Four feels like a good number,” Broad said, “to try and make a good impact for Notts but also to get workloads where I want them to be. I wanted to backload quite a few overs in this period because of the Ashes.”No bowler’s going to play six games in seven weeks. I want to be able to have that workload to fall back on that if I miss two weeks Test cricket, say, or three weeks, when I get my chance I’m good to go.”The aim for the next 24 hours is to beat the rain before beating Middlesex. What looked an apocalyptic Sunday forecast seems to have dropped down a few grades in the last few hours, enough for Broad to focus on helping Notts to a second win in as many games. If, as expected, there is no play before 1pm, one imagines the visitors’ second innings won’t go beyond the 50.5 overs managed in the final half of day three. That they needed 82 overs to dismiss Middlesex in the first innings won’t bother them too much, particularly given that effort, at this juncture, is an anomaly. This was was the first time Middlesex have managed a batting point in five attempts, brought up by a full-blooded pull shot from their skipper. The bad news was Toby Roland-Jones’ boundary was more about desperation than fulfilling side quests as the hosts were nine down.A strong start of 111 for 2 was wasted when the final eight fell for just 163. The worst of it was a middle-order collapse of four for 51, as much instigated by Broad as batters wandering into traps loaded with obvious bait.Stephen Eskinazi and Max Holden, Broad’s second and third, were the most culpable, partly because of telegraphed tweaks in the field. Matt Mongomery asked skipper Steven Mullaney (stood at mid-off) if he had the right angle around the corner like a van driver being guided into a parking spot by a pedestrian. Haseeb Hameed almost brought out the spirit level when adopting a carpenter’s level of accuracy to ensure he was equidistant between the catchers at square leg and midwicket,Broad’s observation from years of bowling from the Pavilion End was how often the ball travels in the air through leg slip, which now seems to be a problem area for Eskinazi. The dismissal of Holden, as it happens, was the work of Ben Duckett, who recalled Holden’s penchant for an aerial flick in that region from their days together at Northamptonshire.Yet again, Ryan Higgins was responsible for instilling some credibility, though at least this time he could build upon Mark Stoneman’s 76, the end of which – lbw to Hutton – brought the allrounder to the crease. Higgins was unperturbed by the short stuff and clinical with anything full, and crunched a pull shot well in front of square on the legside for a sixth boundary to take him to a third half-century in five innings. An attempted late cut off the very next ball from Lyndon James saw him take out his own off stump. That “favour” was returned with interest when Higgins took out James’ leg stump at about 6.30pm, bowling the right-hander around his legs and drawing more enthusiasm from those remaining in the stands. It was a very necessary inroad, ending the most productive partnership of Nottinghamshire’s second innings on 45.By then, at 133 for 6, Nottinghamshire’s lead of 223 was spilling over into daunting for the hosts, particularly with Joe Clarke settling into a groove. The early loss of Duckett for 170 less than he managed in the first innings was a mini-victory and no less than Ethan Bamber deserved for a quality set of 14 overs for his 2 for 26.Likewise, Hollman’s legspinner through Ben Slater and the lbw of Clarke after he had registered his first half-century of the season, were moments of worthwhile retaliation from Middlesex.More will be required on Sunday, however much play the weather allows. To lose this match for three defeats from three would already be catastrophic for Middlesex’s Division One survival hopes. Rain would be their saviour.

Pep is already brewing the "ideal successor to Bernardo" at Man City

Once again in his Manchester City tenure, Pep Guardiola will need to oversee something of a squad rebuild this summer, with the treble-winning side of 2023 looking to have perhaps run its course.

When the Catalan coach arrived through the door in 2016, he inherited an ageing side that also needed revamping, with the likes of Yaya Toure, Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero slowly being phased out over the next few years.

History looks set to repeat itself in the present day, albeit with there more likely to be a swift mass exodus this time around, rather than a gradual transition.

Of those who helped the Citizens to treble glory less than two years ago, Kyle Walker has since moved out on loan to AC Milan, while reports have indicated that both Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne could follow suit at the end of the season.

A new goalkeeper could also be on the cards, while 2023 arrival, Mateo Kovacic, has also been heavily linked with a return to Spain, amid interest from former rivals, Atletico Madrid.

It also remains to be seen whether long-serving star, Bernardo Silva, will finally secure a long-awaited exit, with the Portuguese playmaker having endured a muted campaign at the Etihad.

Bernardo Silva's future at Man City

Once again, those of a City persuasion head into a summer window anticipating speculation surrounding the former Monaco man, with the 30-year-old having repeatedly been linked with an exit in previous years.

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva,JackGrealishand Ilkay Gundogan celebrate after the match

As per The Athletic, the midfielder’s contract – which is set to expire next year – is now ‘dealt with on a summer-by-summer basis due to his previous desires to leave’, with a move to Barcelona having long been touted.

Perhaps, the £300k-per-week star will actually depart this time around, with recent reports indicating that he may have even agreed terms over an exit, with Paris Saint-Germain viewed as a likely destination.

That potential switch to the French capital would bring to an end what has been a magical eight-year spell with the Citizens for Silva, with Guardiola memorably lauding the diminutive talent as “one of the best players [he’s] ever seen” back in 2023.

Since signing on a £43m deal back in 2017, the Lisbon-born genius has racked up 69 goals and 69 assists in 394 games in all competitions, playing a vital part in the string of major honours that Guardiola and co have claimed.

For all his majestic quality, however, Silva’s impact has been limited in 2024/25 it must be said, having contributed just three goals and four assists in all competitions, albeit while largely operating in a deeper role.

Even though he has previously been described as “irreplaceable” by his manager in the past, now might actually be the perfect time for City to cash in, with the club already boasting the ideal replacement.

Man City's in-house Bernardo Silva replacement

It’s fair to say that the Etihad outfit aren’t short of creative talents who could fill the shoes of Silva in the side, with Guardiola blessed with a raft of young stars, namely Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb and James McAtee.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

That said, one man who could represent the “ideal successor to Bernardo” – as per analyst Ben Mattinson – is recent arrival, Claudio Echeverri, with the 19-year-old making his belated move to Manchester earlier this year.

The highly-rated Argentine was actually signed by City from River Plate back in January 2024, on a £12.5m deal, although he was immediately loaned back to the club for the year.

Now officially confirmed as a Man City player, the teenager is still waiting to make his first appearance for his new side, albeit while having been pictured pitchside for Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Brighton.

Guardiola had previously teased that he would like to introduce the Argentina U20 international before the end of the season, or ahead of the Club World Cup, albeit with it set to depend on how quickly Echeverri can adapt.

City supporters may not have seen much of their new man yet, although, in the words of Mattinson, they now have a “proper superstar” on their hands, with talent scout Jacek Kulig previously suggesting that the playmaker is “destined for greatness”.

Much like Silva, Echeverri has typically operated in an attacking midfield role in his career thus far, having recorded four goals and eight assists for his former employers, from 48 senior outings.

Claudio Echeverri

It will take time for the teenager to adapt to life in his new surroundings, although if he can follow in the footsteps of another ex-River Plate star, Julian Alvarez, then the Citizens could well be on to a winner.

Man City lost "superb" star for £0, now he's worth £100m & outscoring Foden

As Phil Foden continues to endure a miserable season at Manchester City, the Sky Blues must regret losing a “superb” £100-rated superstar for free.

Edgbaston Ashes classic brewing as Stuart Broad breaks game open

Usman Khawaja unscathed at stumps – for third evening out of four

An Edgbaston Ashes classic is brewing. England batted frantically for two sessions on the fourth day to set Australia a target of 281 to win the first Test, and Stuart Broad took two late wickets to remove Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith and leave the game in the balance overnight.Australia’s pursuit started with the biggest partnership of the day as David Warner and Usman Khawaja added 61. But then Ollie Robinson cracked the game open, inducing a thin outside edge from Warner to bring Labuschagne to the crease on a king pair and give the raucous Hollies Stand an early-evening pick-me-up.The stage was set for Broad, who became the game’s protagonist as he bounded in from the Pavilion End. Labuschagne, who had reached 13, was beaten by his first ball and dismissed by his fourth, unable to avoid the temptation of chasing a wide one in the channel outside his off stump which nipped away to take his outside edge. When Smith walked out, the field was up; so too the volume, as Broad stood at the top of his mark and revved the crowd up once more. Smith swung him away for four, but then edged through to Jonny Bairstow on the bounce and Broad sensed another moment. As Smith shaped to drive through cover, the ball swung in and shaped away off the seam. Bairstow took the catch, Broad peeled away and England had the foothold they were after.Khawaja walked off unscathed at the close – for the third evening out of four – with nightwatch Scott Boland for company and 174 more required on Tuesday to put Australia one-nil up; England are seven wickets away. With showers forecast in the morning, a tight finish looms in the golden glow of the late-afternoon sunshine.Joe Root had fought to survive eight balls under thick, dark clouds on Sunday afternoon and decided to free his arms under blue skies on Monday. He attempted to reverse-scoop the first ball of the day over the slip cordon and missed it entirely; he connected with the sixth and seventh, picking up six and then four with the same audacious shot.Pat Cummins spread the field in a bid to stem the flow as Root and Ollie Pope traded boundaries, but he produced a ball that made his team-mates redundant. From wide on the crease, he sent down a booming inswinger that snuck underneath Pope’s bat and ripped his off stump out the ground.Harry Brook joined Root and made a fast start, picking length early and taking 13 runs from Nathan Lyon’s first over of the day. Root himself continued at a quick tempo and by drinks, England had scored at 6.88 runs an over in the morning, adding 93 in 13.3 overs. But four runs short of his half-century, Root ran past one. He skipped down to a sharply-spun offbreak, looking to heave Lyon up and over the leg side, but was beaten by the turn. Alex Carey whipped the bails off, and for the first time in his 131-match career, Root was stumped in a Test match.Josh Hazlewood and Lyon dried England up as Ben Stokes looked to play himself into some kind of rhythm. He survived a convincing lbw shout off Lyon which Australia reviewed unsuccessfully, but Brook fell while trying to force the initiative with a pull off the same bowler, straight to short midwicket.Bairstow was given out in the over before lunch, struck on the pad by a Boland in-ducker, but successfully overturned the decision and tried to push on after the interval, taking Cummins for back-to-back boundaries. His innings proved to be England’s latest cameo: trying to reverse-sweep Lyon, he was trapped leg-before.Australia were on top and tried to turn the screw, appealing in every other over. Labuschagne was convinced he had taken a blinding catch at short leg to dismiss Robinson, only for replays to confirm he had grounded it, and then convinced Cummins into burning their final review when Robinson played-and-missed at a short one.Moeen Ali slashed Cummins for four then slog-swept Lyon for six, but gloved a pull behind as Hazlewood returned for his second spell to expose the tail. Robinson added 27 useful runs, surviving a short-ball barrage before lofting Lyon straight to Cameron Green at long-on, and James Anderson managed a couple of boundaries then steered Cummins into a sprawling Carey’s left hand.Cummins and Lyon shared eight wickets and struck regularly, with England’s batting in a state of hyperactivity. Ten of their 11 batters reached double figures but nobody made a half-century, and the most substantial partnership – between Root and Brook – was worth just 52.After Khawaja edged Anderson through the gap between Bairstow and Root to pick up a streaky boundary through the slips, Australia’s progress was serene. They were aided in no small part by Moeen’s struggles with a blistered spinning finger and their seamers’ difficulty in finding movement on a slow, dry surface. That was, at least, until Warner’s dismissal prompted that enthralling half-hour passage. If the weather allows, this clash of styles and cultures should go down to the wire.

Berta loves him: Arsenal hold "strong interest" in "incredible" £58m striker

Arsenal now hold a “strong interest” in an “incredible” striker, with new sporting director Andrea Berta a “firm admirer”, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.

Berta's arrival confirmed as summer planning begins

Berta has been expected to complete a move to the Emirates Stadium for quite some time, with the new sporting director coming in to replace Edu, who resigned from the role to take up a job with Nottingham Forest back in November.

Now, the move has been confirmed, with the Italian stating he is extremely happy to get the deal over the line: “I am thrilled to be joining Arsenal in what is a hugely exciting period for the club.

“I have watched with great interest the way Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone into re-establishing the club as a major force in European football with a passionate following around the world.”

Offer made: Arsenal now submit £59m bid for "extremely quick" top target

The Gunners have reportedly tabled a huge offer for one of their priority targets.

ByDominic Lund Mar 30, 2025

As we edge closer to the summer transfer window, the 53-year-old will be well-aware one of his main tasks is to bring in a new striker, and he is wasting no time identifying potential targets.

According to Ornstein, Arsenal are now developing a “strong interest” in Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres as a possible striker signing, with the Sweden international expected to be a prominent name on the list of targets.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates after the match

Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak is also of interest, but Gyokeres could be a more realistic addition, given that Sporting could be willing to green light his departure for a fee of around £58m this summer.

Berta is said to be a “firm admirer” of the Sporting star, indicating the new sporting director could be the driving force behind a deal, although Mikel Arteta is also believed to be a close friend of the player’s agent.

"Incredible" Gyokeres has earned big move

It has been a steady rise to the top for the 26-year-old, who has proven himself during spells with Coventry City and Sporting, but his performances for the Portuguese side indicate he is now entering his prime and ready for a big move.

The “incredible” forward has scored five goals in his last eight Liga Portugal games, taking his tally to 42 for the season in all competitions, with six of those coming in the Champions League.

Gyokeres’ performances in Portugal have showcased he could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for Arsenal, who are lacking on options at striker, with Mikel Merino leading the line in Gabriel Jesus’ and Kai Havertz’s absence.

£58m also feels like a fair fee for a player of the striker’s quality, so it is exciting news the Gunners’ interest is growing, and his arrival could get the Berta era off to the perfect start.

Luke Wells' unbeaten fifty gives Lancashire chance to dominate

Supporters tend to believe that clubs are relegated because of alarming collapses or humiliating defeats. Perhaps they are right. But the source of poor seasons can also be found on rain-shortened days like this with the Northamptonshire players sitting in the away dressing-room and wondering how a morning that began with their star in the ascendant has seemingly ended with Lancashire’s top order playing competently on a pitch that nonetheless looks as if it will rag every which way come Friday afternoon.Luke Procter’s team has not yet lost this game and they may eventually draw it while sipping a cocktail and listening to a Tony Bennett CD. But they have passed the chance to dominate proceedings to Luke Wells, who is 61 not out, and the rest of his colleagues. Come late September, they may look back and their reflections will be filled with regret. To a degree, the morning’s play exemplified the problems that have bedevilled Northamptonshire’s Championship cricket this season. Resuming on 302 for 5 and therefore presented with a perfect platform from which to build an imposing first-innings score in excess of 400, they lost their last five wickets for 40 runs. And what would have been particularly concerning to their head coach John Sadler was that only James Sales, who was bowled by a fine ball from Jack Morley, seemed powerless to avoid his fate. The other four batters were complicit in their downfalls. The final four wickets were all taken by the spinners in the space of 28 balls and at a cost of 13 runs. Nighwatcher Dominic Leech was stumped by Phil Salt off Morley for 13; Lewis McManus, having slog-swept Morley for a fine six, stuck one up the chimney off Tom Hartley and Tom Bailey ran round to take a fine catch; and the innings ended when Jack White attempted a reverse sweep off Hartley but only gloved a catch to Salt. Two of the five wickets to fall had been those of tailenders but the cumulative impression was that an opportunity had been tossed aside. Lancashire’s batsmen have not so far been so profligate.”Yesterday was such a good day but it only counted if we backed it up today, so it’s a bit frustrating that we’ve gone from 266 for 3 to 342 all out,” said Sadler. “We should be sitting here with 400 on the board. If we’d done that, it means we could have kept catchers in a little bit longer, the spinners could have had an extra man round the bat and we could have been a little more attacking. So as good a score as 342 is, we should be sitting here with a four in front of it, not a three.”But these are difficult weeks at Lancashire, too. Failure to reach the Vitality Blast Finals Day and the achievement of nothing more than a mid-table position in Division One were plainly not what the coaching staff envisaged when they planned the season. On top of which, three locally developed players, Matthew Parkinson, Danny Lamb and Rob Jones, have opted to join other counties in the past month or so, leaving critics of the club to bemoan the loss of cricketers to whom they felt an abiding attachment. So maybe it would be a useful corrective in these gloomy times and this drear late afternoon to recognise the contribution of two players who joined the club from other counties and have been so successfully integrated into the highly professional ethos at Emirates Old Trafford that their own careers have flourished, albeit a very little late in their career. Certainly, their qualities were apparent this afternoon as they responded to Northamptonshire’s disappointing 342 all out by putting on 114 for Lancashire’s first wicket. These are lovely days and lovely seasons for Keaton Jennings and Wells. To a degree, the openers are peas in a pod, although given that both are 6ft 4ins tall, maybe ripe runner beans would be a more apt metaphor. Both hit strongly square of the wicket on both the off and on sides and both whack it strongly down the ground. Their opening partnership of 114 is nothing like their best for Lancashire – they belted Somerset’s attack for 154 in only 36.1 overs in April – but it reinforced the momentum of the contest in the home side’s favour. Northamptonshire’s problems were compounded when they dropped Jennings on 17, Justin Broad putting him down at third slip off Jack White.Jennings is normally ruthless in capitalising on such reprieves but he was leg before wicket for 55 when attempting to reverse-sweep Saif Zaib’s third ball of the innings. Four overs later the rain drifted in from the west and never let up.
