The top seven sides at the end of the league stage of the ongoing ODI World Cup in India will qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, along with hosts Pakistan, to compete in the eight-team event.An ICC spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved by the ICC Board in 2021, when the competition was brought back as one of the eight men’s global tournaments to be held in the 2024-31 cycle.The development has come as a surprise to a few boards – both whose teams are in India as well as others who missed making it to the ODI World Cup – who told ESPNcricinfo that they were unaware about qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy being at stake in this tournament.At present, Bangladesh and England are at No. 9 and 10 on the ODI World Cup points table, and therefore outside the top seven who will qualify for the Champions Trophy along with hosts Pakistan. “Yeah, I’m aware of that,” England captain Jos Buttler said when asked if he knew a place in the Champions Trophy was at stake following their loss to India in Lucknow. “And absolutely, it just proves we’ve still got lots to play for.”This also means other Full-Member nations like West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland will not even have the opportunity to qualify for the tournament, by virtue of not having made it to the 2023 ODI World Cup.In November 2021, the ICC had unveiled several global events for both men and women in the new cycle (2024-31) including two editions of the Champions Trophy – in 2025 and 2029. Mohammad Haris has been left out of Pakistan’s 17-man squad for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand starting January 12. وقال أمير مرتضى منصور في تصريحات تلفزيونية عبر قناة “تن”: “تدشين قناة الزمالك أمر يُحسب لمجلس إدارة مرتضى منصور، ولم أكن محبوبًا داخل قناة النادي، وكان البعض يشتكون مني إلى مرتضى”.

وأكمل: “في الوقت الذي شهد صراعات ومشكلات، استطاع مرتضى منصور توظيف القناة لصالح حل مشكلات النادي، وبداية نجاح الزمالك تكمن في عدم النظر إلى الأهلي وقناته”.

وتابع: “اعمل على نظام يناسب جمهورك ولاعبيك وإمكاناتك المادية، وليس من الضروري أن تكون مشابهًا للأهلي في شيء، أرفض مقارنة الزمالك بالأهلي”.

وأردف: “يجب على حسين لبيب أن يخرج ويتحدث، هو رئيس الزمالك، ومن حقه التحدث وأنا ابتعاده، رئيس النادي هو لسان النادي الفعلي”.

وأشار: “شيكابالا شخصية استثنائية في الملعب، يمتلك إمكانات ومهارات لم تتكرر في تاريخ إفريقيا خلال الـ100 عام الماضية، وإذا تحدثنا عن أفضل عشرة لاعبين، فسيكون شيكابالا وإيتو من بينهم، مرتضى منصور كان يقول لي في حديث خاص بيننا: -شيكابالا صاحبك، لن يعتزل الكرة إلا بمزاجه-“.

وأكمل: “وكيل شيكابالا كان من أكثر الأشخاص الذين تسببوا له بالضرر، كان ينبغي أن يكون شيكابالا متواجدًا في أوروبا حتى الآن”.

واستطرد: “لم أتخذ قراري بعد بشأن خوض انتخابات الزمالك، وقائمة الأهلي تعد الأفضل بين أندية الدوري”.

وواصل: “أعتبر أحمد فتوح بمثابة أخي الصغير، فهو طيب القلب ولا يدرك أنه يؤذي نفسه ولو كنت مسؤولًا في الزمالك خلال أزمة فتوح، لقمت بعقابه، ولكن إذا تكررت الأخطاء التي ارتكبها، فسأقوم ببيعه”.

واسترسل: “لم أكن سعيدًا برحيل زيزو عن الزمالك وانضمامه إلى الأهلي، وكان من المفترض أن يتم بيعه إذا لم يكن راضيًا عن تجديد عقده، فذلك لا يعيب الإدارة ولا النادي، والدليل أن الأمر نفسه حدث مع وسام أبو علي في الأهلي”.

وأتم: “كنت أتمنى أن يستمر زيزو مع الزمالك حتى النهاية، وأن يختار ناديًا آخر غير الأهلي، زيزو يمتلك كل مقومات النجاح، وكان يلعب في نادي يمتلك المقومات ذاتها، فلماذا لم ينجح هناك؟”.

Zaman Khan and Usama Mir have also been granted NOCs to take part in the league, which begins from December 7.The trio can play in the BBL until December 28, however, a schedule the board said had been agreed bearing in mind “the workload of players and the future tours programme of the national men’s team.” That likely refers to their potential involvement in Pakistan’s T20I series with New Zealand after their tour of Australia, but those games don’t begin until January 12. But it is a version of events that Mohammad Hafeez, the team director, also doubled down on in a press conference last week, before the team’s departure for Australia.The show cause notice is based on the alleged breach of clauses from the central contract which requires the cricketer to make themselves “available as and when required by the Board” and to “render professional cricketing services… diligently, faithfully and with utmost integrity”.That Rauf was in consideration for the Australia series was a surprise in the first place, given that he has mostly been seen and groomed as a white-ball specialist since his emergence through a Lahore Qalandars’ talent hunt in 2017. But ESPNcricinfo understands Rauf had been sounded out about the possibility of some involvement in the Australia Test series during the World Cup in India. Pakistan’s then management envisaged using him for maximum impact across shorter spells, especially at a venue like Perth, where Pakistan play their first Test. Rauf was said to be sceptical even then but had not ruled it out.That thinking was confirmed by Pakistan’s new captain Shan Masood who said before flying out to Australia that they wanted to use Rauf’s extreme pace across short spells as England had used Mark Wood in the Ashes a couple of seasons ago. Wood though has been managed by England as a red-ball option for a while, having now played 31 Tests and over 70 first-class games.Rauf has only ever played nine first-class matches and a single Test for Pakistan last winter against England, when Pakistan were also short of options. Rauf bowled 13 overs in the first innings of the Test in Rawalpindi and sustained a quad injury that ruled him out of the remaining series. The administrative instability at the PCB has not helped the situation. When the idea of Rauf in Australia was first considered, the people talking to him were completely different to those now in charge: Hafeez has replaced Mickey Arthur as the team director (and is for now the replacement of Grant Bradburn as head coach) and Wahab has taken over from Inzamam-ul-Haq as the new chief selector, the fifth man in that post this year. Masood has taken over from Babar Azam as the Test captain.The issue had led to a degree of frustration among some centrally-contracted players, and the irony that Hafeez and Wahab are taking such stances has not been lost on them. As recently retired players, both found themselves in similar situations in their playing days not so long ago. In late 2019, Wahab took an “indefinite break” from red-ball cricket, pulling out from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy days before the start of the tournament.At 34 years old at the time, Wahab was playing less long-form cricket, but his decision to not make himself available for Tests was heavily criticised by Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s head coach at the time, as well as Waqar Younis, who was bowling coach at the time.In January 2021, meanwhile, Hafeez was excluded from a T20I series with South Africa during which Covid regulations meant he had to return earlier from a stint in the Abu Dhabi T10 to be available for the Pakistan squad. Hafeez, who was enjoying a T20 rebirth at the time, told the PCB he could not make it by that date and eventually missed the series. He had earlier warned the PCB that the overlap between the Pakistan series and the T10 could impact his availability because he had committed to playing in the league.

When the day began, we wondered if there would be a day four in the Hyderabad Test. Then Bazball arrived.After England lost four of their first five wickets in the first innings to defensive shots, you could almost imagine their coach, after whom Bazball is named, telling them it is more acceptable to get out reverse-sweeping than defending. That commitment to the sweep of various varieties brought India face to face with Bazball properly for the first time. England claimed the honours on the third day in Hyderabad, converting a first-innings deficit of 190 into a lead of 126 with four wickets in hand.Ollie Pope’s unbeaten 148 was the biggest turnaround from the first innings during which he meekly followed the turn with his hands and edged to slip. In the second innings, he swept and reverse-swept with aplomb to mess around with the spinners’ lines and lengths and capitalise on the enterprising start provided by Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. He was rewarded with a first century in India, the highest second-innings score by a visiting batter in India since Alastair Cook’s 175 in Ahmedabad 12 years ago.All told, England scored 79 runs with variants of the sweep without losing a wicket to it. Pope alone scored 41 of those runs, pulling the shot off almost every time a spinner troubled him. Consequently England became the first team since Nagpur 2012-13 to score 300 against India in a second innings in India.India will be thankful you can’t reverse-sweep Jasprit Bumrah. For it could have been worse for the hosts without a rousing spell of reverse-swing bowling just after lunch during which he got rid of Duckett and Joe Root. The pitch offered only slow turn, and England kept nailing high-risk options, but the spinners will still be disappointed that Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers on a day-three surface with figures of 12-3-29-2. For all the talk of Bazball and the excellent start England managed against pace in the first innings, what had stood out was their top three falling to traditional dismissals. All three were caught playing defensively in front of their body, which leaves you at the mercy of the turn, whose degree you cannot predict with any certainty.Having taken the last three Indian wickets for 15 – led again by Joe Root the offspinner – England played what they practised. Not immediately, though. In his first two overs with the new ball, Ashwin could have had both Duckett and Crawley, but the inside edges fell either side of short leg. That was enough to shake them up. No more, they said.Crawley began with the reverse-sweep against Ashwin before taking Axar downtown. All the sweeping played on Ashwin’s lengths. In order to stay one step ahead, he overpitched far more than usual, and it was only when he went back to a proper length that he drew a forward defensive from Crawley. The ball didn’t turn, and the edge went to slip. By then, though, England had put 45 on the board.Duckett and Pope kept sweeping and reversing India to distraction. That a lot of practice has gone into the sweeps was plain to see. Like Ben Stokes in the first innings, they kept almost switching their stance without changing their grip, which allowed them to play the reverse-sweep powerfully and in front of square.Post-lunch Bumrah began reversing the ball, but was let done by a non-review of a close lbw shout against Duckett. He bowled him top of off after highly skilful bowling across two overs, but England had hit four boundaries in that time. Jonny Bairstow proceeded to thwart Bumrah by staying leg-side of the ball to avoid lbw, reacting late if he bowled the outswinger, and picking the slower ones. When it began to look threatening for India, the natural variation from the pitch came to their aid. Jadeja turned one past his outside edge, and the next ball, nearly identical, went straight on to dislodge the off bail as Bairstow left it alone.Then followed about the only period when England allowed the spinners to work on a dismissal. Ashwin craftily pushed Stokes back and dragged him out with his changes of length until he had him playing back to a full ball, which turned past the bat to bowl him. With 27 runs still in the bag, India would have smelled the win here, especially as Pope and Ben Foakes were forced to play defensively.There came a period of 70 balls without a boundary for England as Foakes played more traditionally, and Pope was kept quiet. After tea, though, the floodgates opened again as India began the session, unimpressively so, with Jadeja and Axar. Not for the first time in his short tenure as captain, Rohit Sharma has begun a session with the bowlers who had till then looked the least likely to take a wicket.In the final session, Pope was even more emphatic with his reverse-sweeping, on one occasion even reverse-Dilscooping Jadeja over the keeper’s head. In between he gave the charge once in a while but the backbone of his innings was the sweeping and the reverse-sweeping. By them time he made a mistake with the reverse, he had already scored 110, and even then he was dropped by Axar at backward point.Axar came back to take Foakes’ wicket with one that stayed low, but that was the extent of inroads India would make. At stumps on day three, the new ball was three overs away, which would give India hope. There is every chance that on a pitch with slow turn, and given their spin attack, England might not stretch their lead far enough for this Test but this turnaround could still have implications for the series.
