Pakistan in danger of leaving their own party early

After the defeat to New Zealand in Karachi, Pakistan must travel to Dubai to play India, a team they have struggled to beat for several years

Sidharth Monga22-Feb-20251:47

Do India stick with Kuldeep, or bring in Varun?

Big picture: Pakistan’s fight for survivalIf ever Pakistan needed a miracle, it is now. Not for the cricketers’ fault, they find themselves isolated in international cricket to the extent that this is the first ICC event they are hosting in 29 years. And barely three days into the Champions Trophy, following a thrashing against New Zealand, they are staring at the exit sign of a party they waited three decades to host.To stay alive in the tournament, Pakistan must beat their arch-rivals on a slow, tired track, where India have already played and won one match, and have five spinners to choose from. For no fault of India’s cricketers, Pakistan must leave their own party and travel to Dubai because India refused to travel to Pakistan for reasons neither their board nor their government will specify. Would you blame Pakistan for feeling under siege when they must fight to even reinstate their nation’s name in the official broadcast branding? At such times, the reasons behind any such omission can seem sinister even if they might not be.It creates a weird dynamic between the two sets of cricketers. Despite all the machinations, the cricketers respect each other and are civil to each other to the extent that it annoys those who want their own hatred to reflect on the field. The edge is also perhaps because of the gulf between the two sides. As is likely to happen with a team left isolated, Pakistan, once at the forefront of innovation in Asia, are woefully behind the times, especially in limited-overs cricket. India, once the land of accumulators but not always winners, are now continuously striving to push into the future. In an era that the ICC engineers its tournament schedules to ensure at least one big India-Pakistan match, it says a lot that Pakistan have won only in 2017 and 2021 since 2011.More than the four-year pattern of wins, Pakistan will look at the conditions with some hope. The slow pitches in Dubai, recently used for the ILT20, call for an old-fashioned game that could neutralise to an extent India’s big-hitting advantage in the middle overs. With no dew – 1pm starts anyway leave little room for dew to play a role – the toss on these pitches is a big advantage. In similar conditions last year, Sri Lanka got the better of India in a bilateral series at home with an unheralded spin attack. They won the tosses, batted first and got mid-200s in each game. Pakistan will hope for a repeat, but India will also lean on the lessons they have learnt.Form guidePakistan LLWLW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
India WWWWLIn the spotlight: Virat Kohli and Salman AghaVirat Kohli has been out to legspin in each of the five last matches that he has faced such bowling. That’s five dismissals for 21 runs in the last 46 balls of legspin he has faced in ODIs. Now Pakistan don’t have a classic legspinner in their ranks, but Abrar Ahmed does turn the ball both ways like a legspinner. Most batters these days can hit big on flat tracks, but it is here you need the skill to pick singles without taking risks. It is not hard to imagine India needing just that in one of these games. Will the Kohli of the old turn up?Salman Agha has been the silver lining for Pakistan in recent ODI cricket. Since 2024, he has scored the second-most middle-over runs for Pakistan: 325, at an average of 65.00 and a strike rate of 88.07. Pakistan will need all of his industriousness in the middle overs when India try to choke them with their slower bowlers.Team news: Imam or Usman in place of Fakhar?Imam-ul-Haq has come into the squad as the replacement for the one dynamic opener Pakistan had, Fakhar Zaman. Usman Khan is their other reserve batter, but if he does make his ODI debut, he will have to do so in an unfamiliar role: he bats at No. 4 in List A cricket.Pakistan (possible): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Babar Azam, 3 Saud Shakeel, 4 Mohammad Rizwan (capt, wk), 5 Salman Agha, 6 Tayyab Tahir, 7 Khushdil Shah, 8 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 9 Naseem Shah, 10 Haris Rauf, 11 Abrar AhmedThere’s no reason for India to make any changes to their combination or personnel.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Axar Patel, 9 Harshit Rana, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Kuldeep YadavPitch and conditionsIndia wanted to field first in their opening game against Bangladesh but given the way the pitch slowed up and how there was no dew, don’t expect any side to make that mistake in Dubai again. Expect teams to make the most of powerplay before the middle overs tie them up. It is hard to see the trend changing on pitches that were recently used for a whole T20 tournament.Stats and trivia: India dominate Pakistan India have won nine of their last 11 completed ODIs against Pakistan, across the World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. Pakistan have beaten India in three out of five matches in the Champions Trophy, including the 2017 final. Kohli needs 15 runs to become only the third man – and the fastest among them – to score 14,000 ODI runs.Quotes”If you remove pressure, then what remains in an India-Pakistan game? A player needs that pressure to show his wares.”
“Because there is no dew, I don’t think the toss matters much. In every big match, if there is no dew, whichever team that bats second is under a bit more pressure. Whichever team handles the pressure better, has a better chance of scoring the win.”

Celtic: New transfer update on £25m Hoops star who wanted out of Parkhead

Celtic and Brendan Rodgers have now reportedly made a significant decision regarding the future of a four-time Scottish Premiership champion.

Rodgers linked with foreign move away from Celtic

It hasn’t been the happiest start to the season for the Hoops, following a disappointing summer, with the 0-0 draw at home to Rangers proving to be a turgid affair.

All doesn’t appear to be well regarding Rodgers, having been frustrated during the summer transfer window, and journalist Alan Nixon believes a move to a foreign club appeals to the Northern Irishman next, despite links with the Nottingham Forest job.

It remains to be seen how long Rodgers’ second stint at Celtic lasts, but it is a tumultuous period in the club’s history, summed up by the statement they released days ago, with Michael Stewart calling it a PR disaster.

“Talk about not being able to read the room. Of course, they were under pressure and felt like they had to speak but they’d have been better just being quiet than coming out with that. At no juncture in that statement did the Celtic board actually say, ‘you know what, it’s not been as good as we hoped’. That statement could’ve been one word – ‘sorry’.”

Celtic make huge decision regarding "physical beast"

According to Football Insider, Celtic and Rodgers have decided that Daizen Maeda is not for sale when the January transfer window opens, despite him pushing for an exit which was blocked by Parkhead chiefs.

It is claimed that the Hoops have “blocked his potential transfer” away from Parkhead “due to their lack of depth in forward areas” between now and the end of the season, with Maeda himself admitting he wanted out of Celtic Park over the summer.

Maeda is contracted at the club until the summer of 2027, so time is running out if they want to eventually receive a fee for him, but keeping hold of him for the time being does make sense.

Celtic cannot afford to be in a position where they don’t have enough firepower in their ranks, following such a forgettable summer of attacking signings, and the £25m-rated Japanese is a player who has been lauded as a “physical beast” by coaches and also hailed by Rodgers in the past.

“He’s been absolutely brilliant wherever he’s played, however he’s played, he’s had an amazing season. He earns every penny and we feel as a club he deserves more. He doesn’t give away much, other than saying he’s very happy.”

Maeda is still searching for his first league goal of the season after four appearances, which is unlike him, but the four-time Scottish Premiership champion is too good a player not to find some form sooner rather than later.

Celtic struck gold signing £1.5m "beast" who's now worth more than Dolberg

Following Celtic’s failed pursuit of Kasper Dolberg, who joined Ajax instead, the Hoops do have an attacker with a higher value.

ByBen Gray Sep 9, 2025

It could well be the 27-year-old’s final season in a Celtic shirt, however, in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2027, and Rodgers will hope he can see the best of him again before next May arrives.

SRH won't change 'aggressive brand', says coach Daniel Vettori

Sunrisers Hyderabad were dismissed for a below-par total for the second time in three games this season

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Mar-20255:41

Do SRH’s batters lack a plan B?

Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori will have “no conversations” with his team to temper their approach following two successive losses in IPL 2025.After starting the season by hitting 286 against Rajasthan Royals, the second-highest IPL total, SRH have stumbled twice with the bat: first against Lucknow Super Giants, and now against Delhi Capitals. On Sunday in Visakhapatnam, they were revived from 37 for 4 in the fifth over by rookie batter Aniket Verma and Heinrich Klaasen, before they stumbled to 163 all out in 18.4 overs. Vettori emphasised the need to stay true to their philosophy of taking the game on, even if it may backfire occasionally.”There’s no conversations around that [tempering down],” he said. “We definitely want to play an aggressive brand. If you look at our top three, that’s how they play. They normally set the tone for the rest of us.”Abhishek Sharma was run out in the first over, while Ishan Kishan and Travis Head were dismissed trying to hit boundaries. Kishan slashed a short delivery to deep backward point while Head was out nicking while attempting to ramp Mitchell Starc.”Abhishek was unlucky tonight, Ishan and Travis on a different day may have hit those balls for six,” he said. “We understand when we play this way, there may be failure but hopefully we can come to the party and perform more often than not.”Vettori said the position SRH are in this early in the season wasn’t a setback and backed his team to recover.”If you look at the course of the 18 IPL seasons, there’s been very few teams that haven’t lost two games in a row,” he said. “Particularly early in the season when teams are learning their combinations, first year after a big auction.”We don’t want to be in this position, like any team, but we understand every time we play, we come up against a very good team, well-planned teams and highly talented players.”There’s no reason why we can’t just turn up and win, we’ve got to perform, that’s the challenge for us after a very good first performance and continue in the style we like. How we challenge ourselves to do it consistently [is important].”Vettori had high praise for rookie legspinner Zeeshan Ansari, who gave SRH some hope in their defence by picking up three wickets in his first competitive T20 in over six years.Ansari, a former India Under-19 player from the same batch as Rishabh Pant, Kishan and Khaleel Ahmed among others, had earned a trial with SRH after a chart-topping performance at the UP T20 League last year.”He was fantastic,” Vettori said. “Right from the first day he came in we knew that he was a talent, trying to fit him in the team was one of the conversations early on. For him to give us the domestic leg-spin option, to take three big wickets tonight, and to continue to challenge the batsmen is something very promising for us going forward.”

Newcastle now plot January bid to sign £40m striker who Alan Shearer loves

Newcastle United have had a rough start to the Premier League season as they are one of only four winless teams and are only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.

This season has already seen them lose their star striker to Liverpool on deadline day, although the British record transfer fee may go some way to soothe that pain, as well as seeing midfielders Joelinton and Sandro Tonali having to go off injured against Liverpool with what have now been revealed to be serious injuries.

Eddie Howe clapping

However, in his last press conference before the international break, Eddie Howe was looking ahead to the rest of the season and the club’s return to the Champions League:

“We’re just going to try to attack the fixtures in the best way we can. I believe we are more ready than we were last time because there is more experience in the squad and we have been through more together.”

With the manager looking forward to European fixtures, the club, and by extension owners PIF, are looking forward to the January transfer window and another striker signing.

Newcastle eye Mateta as third new striker

Newcastle United are still eyeing up yet another striker in the January transfer window as they contemplate a move for Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Magpies are exploring this deal despite already having signed both Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade as Isak replacements in the final days of the transfer window.

Caught Offside have reported that Palace could be willing to let the French striker go for £40 million, and Newcastle, alongside Leeds United and Aston Villa, are the most interested parties and plan to make formal offers in the New Year.

Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer has previously praised Mateta when he bagged a brace against West Ham in the 2023/24 season:

“A centre-forward masterclass, scoring two terrific goals that any striker would be proud of. What a revelation he’s been under Oliver Glasner.”

Mateta followed that performance up with another brace, this time against Newcastle in what turned out to be his only goal-scoring performance in nine attempts against the Magpies.

Newcastle's moneyball replacement of Isak

The term “moneyball” gets thrown around a lot in football, but Newcastle, in their handling of the departure of Isak, are enacting the transfer strategy in its truest form.

The initial concept of Moneyball came from Billy Beane’s management of the Oakland Athletics, where, in an off-season where major players departed the club, he tried to replace them not with another superstar but with several players who, aggregated, could reach the same level of output.

Spending the money they received from Liverpool for Isak on Wissa, Woltemade, and now potentially Mateta as well, it seems like they are trying to make up Isak’s goal contributions in the aggregate.

Neither of their new strikers nor Mateta on their own match Isak’s output, but they all still have individually impressive returns. All three of them together would almost certainly make up the deficit that Isak leaves behind, but the difficulty for Howe would be managing the three strikers’ desire for game time.

No Tests in CSA's home schedule for 2025-26; SA women to host Ireland, Pakistan

South Africa women will play three T20Is and three ODIs each against Ireland and Pakistan

South Africa will not host any men’s Tests next summer, in accordance with the Future Tours Programme (FTP), and only have one inbound tour – a five-match T20I series against West Indies – in the 2025-26 season. This is the first time since readmission that South Africa will not host men’s Tests with the next long-format home fixtures scheduled for October 2026 against Australia. The lean schedule will allow for Cricket South Africa to focus on stadium upgrades ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Several of the country’s premier grounds will have makeovers including new floodlights and drop-in pitches, which will be prepared well ahead of time and tested before the main event. It will also give the South African women’s side the spotlight, as they host Ireland and Pakistan for three T20Is and three ODIs each. They will play matches at all of South Africa’s big five venues: Newlands in Cape Town, St George’s Park in Gqeberha, the Wanderers in Johannesburg, SuperSport Park in Centurion and Kingsmead in DurbanThe women’s team will visit the smaller centres in Paarl, Benoni, East London, Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein and Kimberley as well, meaning they will have a match at all the country’s major grounds in the same season. The Pakistan series also marks the first round of the new Women’s Championship cycle, leading up to the 2029 ODI World Cup.”We are looking forward to seeing our women take on Ireland and Pakistan,” CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki said in a release. “These tours not only provide our team with strong competition but also give our fans an opportunity to watch the Proteas Women compete at their favourite venues across the country.Moseki explained the men’s international window as being “unusually shorter next season due to outbound bilateral tours,” with South Africa’s white-ball sides touring Australia and England in August and September and the Test team due to play two-match series in Pakistan and India in November and December. The absence of home Tests has also allowed the SA20 to move into the festive window for the first and only time. It will be played between December 26 and January 26, with the West Indies series to follow immediately afterwards. The five matches are spread between the coastal venues and the Highveld but neither Gqeberha nor Durban will host a game. South African players will therefore have six weeks of T20 cricket before the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, which starts in February.CSA have also arranged one A tour, against New Zealand A, which will include three one-day matches and two four-day matches at the start of the summer. The games will be played in Pretoria and Potchefstroom. The dearth of home Tests next summer will be followed by a boon in the 2026-27 season when South Africa’s men will host England and Australia for three Tests each and Bangladesh for two matches while the women’s team will play Tests against India and Australia for a total of 10 Tests.
