Spurs fans can’t believe Pochettino’s transfer comments

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to the latest transfer news, as Mauricio Pochettino has said it’s possible they could sign no one this summer.

It’s been an incredibly infuriating summer for Tottenham fans. Liverpool have gone big, Manchester City have added even more depth to their incredible attack, and Chelsea and Manchester United have both secured mega money deals to strengthen their midfield.

Fans have often wondered what Pochettino could be capable off with a bigger budget to splash, and it’s really starting to look like they’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.

“For us it’s still difficult to do. But in our mind it’s always to be competitive is the most important. We are going to play with 11 and try to be competitive and try to win every single game,” the boss said when asked about rivals’ spending.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

“Last season I told you some numbers, but this season we don’t know. I don’t know if we are going to sign or not. We’re working on that. I cannot tell you if we’re going to sign one, zero or two or three or four.”

Fans were furious when a deal for Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish fell through last week, after Daniel Levy tried to get the price down by making the Championship club sweat.

There are still plenty of young and talented players on the market, and Pochettino realistically needs to add at least one new midfielder to his squad, two if Mousa Dembele leaves.

Rachid Ghezzal a gamble really worth taking for Leicester City

Leicester have completed their fifth transfer of the summer window.

The Foxes announced the £10m capture of Monaco forward – Rachid Ghezzal. Following Riyad Mahrez’s departure to Manchester City, Claude Puel was in the market for a new winger. Ghezzal has penned a four-year deal at the King Power and has huge shoes to fill. The Algerian joins Danny Ward, Jonny Evans, James Maddison and Ricardo Pereira in making the switch to Leicester this summer.

Valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, his transfer fee is relatively cheap given the amount of money that has been thrown about this summer. Everton paid £50m for Richarlison while Crystal Palace have slapped a £70m price tag on Wilfried Zaha. With that in mind, a reported £10m fee for Ghezzal could prove to be an excellent piece of business.

The 26-year-old started his career at Lyon, but frequent injuries restricted his progression to the first-team. He enjoyed his best season back in the 2015/16 season where he scored eight and assisted eight in helping Lyon to a second-place finish. His form soon curtailed, and he later joined Monaco on a free transfer.

Ghezzal made just seven starts for Monaco last season, scoring two and assisting three. His inconsistency cost him dearly – his excellent performances were too infrequent. He possesses excellent dribbling ability and trickery, but his end product often lets him down.

If Puel can help him rediscover his Lyon form, then Leicester have scooped a summer bargain.

Liverpool should be looking to re-sign Raheem Sterling if he decides to leave Man City

Liverpool’s summer window was a brilliant one. After years of having little choice but to sell some of their most important players, the Reds instead managed to bring in some of Europe’s best. From Fabinho to Alisson, there is no doubting the progression that Jurgen Klopp has been able to oversee.

It certainly seems as though the club are entering a new era, and so there would be no greater statement of intent than having the ability to bring back players that were formerly at the club.

One former player that is facing an uncertain future at their current club is Raheem Sterling. He swapped Liverpool for Man City back in 2015, but he’s yet to agree fresh terms on his current contract in Manchester.

Pep Guardiola revealed after the game that he wants to keep Sterling (via Sky Sports) – but something is clearly preventing negotiations from moving at the desired pace, and so perhaps something untoward could be occurring behind the scenes.

Indeed, perhaps Sterling is, at the very least, open to the mere discussion of departing the club – and a move to Anfield would certainly be of benefit to Liverpool.

After all, they don’t come much better going forward than Sterling – who is rated at £81 million by Transfer Markt. Electric pace, agility and goalscoring are just some of the traits that he brings to the fold, and last season, he provided more of that quality than most. With a whopping 18 league goals, the attacking midfielder was amongst the best in his position last term.

He’s come on leaps and bounds from his time at Liverpool, with the Englishman bagging just 7 goals during his last campaign at Anfield.

He’s a very hard worker and offers boundless energy and enthusiasm going forward, and so he’d fit into the system that Klopp has crafted at the club. Able to play across the attack, there are a number of ways in which Sterling could bring something different to the team, but perhaps a role through the middle – a position that he hasn’t played much in at City – could serve him well. There, he’d be able to make use of his brilliant dribbling and passing to make the most of Liverpool’s offensive overtures.

A move to Anfield would be a huge shock, and it wouldn’t go down too well with most Liverpool fans, it’s fair to say. But in reality, he’d add some real quality to the team, and an attacking trio of Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah would be amongst Europe’s best.

Opinion: Some Celtic fans should rethink desire to part with Dedryck Boyata

Celtic supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been somewhat quieter in recent times after seeing their side make a stuttering start to the new season.

Brendan Rodgers’ men came into the campaign full of optimism after back-to-back domestic trebles, but the Bhoys have already bowed out of the Champions League after losing to AEK Athens in the third qualifying round last week. And while they have reached the last eight of the Scottish League Cup following Saturday’s success at Partick Thistle, they have already suffered defeat in the Scottish Premiership in losing at Hearts last time out, having done so on just four occasions last time round.

Thus, there are many deflated Celtic fans up and down the country at present, although some have taken to Twitter to express their delight at the rumour that Dedryck Boyata could indeed be out of the club this month.

And while the £1.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory in recent times, given reports that he has refused to play for the club, some Celtic fans should rethink their desire to get rid of the defender, as the 27-year-old is someone they must seek to retain.

Ultimately, the Belgium international certainly hasn’t helped his club in recent times by reportedly refusing to play following the breakdown of a proposed move to Fulham earlier this month, a refusal which left Celtic short of centre back options ahead of their clash with AEK Athens in the recent fortnight.

And while that has rightly riled several Celtic supporters, as it probably would supporters of other teams were that to happen at their clubs, there is no getting away from the fact that Boyata remains one of the best centre backs at the club, and as such is someone they must seek to retain.

The 27-year-old earned a call up to Belgium’s World Cup squad during the summer as a result of his efforts for the Bhoys in the second half of last season, with the defender going on to start all three of their group games to help them win Group G en route to reaching the semi-finals.

And his efforts in Russia in helping Roberto Martinez’s side to two clean sheets from those three games further underlines Boyata’s defensive credentials, and the fact that he got game time in a Belgium squad that had the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Vincent Kompany, and Jan Vertonghen speaks volumes about just how good the 27-year-old is.

Thus, Celtic really cannot afford to let the defender leave this summer as he is without doubt the best centre back at the club, while his departure would leave the Bhoys further in a centre back crisis heading into the final few weeks of the window – there’s no guarantee they would get anybody in either.

Ultimately, if Celtic want to keep improving under Rodgers, they have to retain their best players, and despite what has gone before regarding Boyata, he falls into that category, which is why some fans should rethink their desire to want him out of the club this month.

Steve Bruce raves about latest Aston Villa recruit Anwar El Ghazi

Steve Bruce has expressed his excitement after Aston Villa secured a deal to land Anwar El Ghazi on loan from Lille, in comments quoted by The Birmingham Mail.

What’s the word?

Aston Villa have enjoyed a solid start to the new Championship campaign but Steve Bruce is looking to secure further business before the end of August, having taken advantage of the loan window to land Anwar El Ghazi on loan from Lille.

The 23-year-old arrives to provide further depth down the flanks in Villa’s charge for promotion and could come at the perfect time, with veteran Albert Adomah struggling for form in the early weeks of the campaign at Villa Park.

Netherlands international El Ghazi could prove to be a huge coup for Villa this season and Steve Bruce did not hide his excitement after landing his fifth summer signing, praising the former Ajax man in comments published by The Birmingham Mail.

What was said?

“El Ghazi has got terrific ability and the supporters will enjoy watching him. He’s a real proper player so to get him, we’re delighted.”

Will he be key?

Anwar El Ghazi is not a signing who can fire Aston Villa back to the Premier League on his own but he joins a squad with plenty of potential and can provide a huge boost, especially alongside the further deals Bruce has in the pipeline.

The BBC has confirmed that Villa are closing in on landing Yannick Bolasie on loan from Everton, bolstering the club’s attacking options, and ESPN has added that Tammy Abraham is set to arrive from Chelsea.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257600″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Aston Villa’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]

Bolasie and El Ghazi can provide support from the wide areas for Abraham and potential striker partner Jonathan Kodjia, who hit a brace in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Brentford on Tuesday, and the quartet could unite to provide the platform for a successful promotion push for Steve Bruce’s side.

All in all, El Ghazi is one of the final pieces in a very exciting Aston Villa jigsaw.

Revealed: Majority of Leeds United fans want to swipe Worrall from under Rangers’ nose

On the face of it, the necessity for a central defender may not be strong for Leeds United.

Everything is going to plan in the Championship at the moment as the team are sitting at the top of the table.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have picked up 13 points from five matches having won one and drawn one.

They have had some injury problems at the back, though, with Pontus Jansson having a spell out and now Liam Cooper is expected to be on the sidelines for a significant chunk of time.

Bielsa has called on Gaetano Berardi to act as cover, and so far it seems to be working, but perhaps it is worth the manager considering dipping back into the transfer market.

The Championship outfit are eligible to seal loan moves until Friday, which could be ideal for Leeds if another injury problem comes their way.

With that in mind, we asked you if the Whites should try to scupper Rangers’ move for Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall.

Last week, The Express reported that the Gers are leading the race for the centre-back, while Celtic have also held an interest.

The results of our poll show that the majority of Leeds fans would be happy for the club to bring in Worrall.

Celtic fans on Twitter slate Moussa Dembele after Lyon move

Celtic fans on Twitter were fuming with Frenchman Moussa Dembele after he joined Ligue 1 side Lyon in a £19.7m move.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers revealed to the BBC on Thursday that the club had rejected a significant offer for Dembele, but the 22-year-old eventually got his move on deadline day.

Dembele is a former France U21 international and netted an extremely impressive 51 goals in just 94 games for the Bhoys following his move from Fulham in the summer of 2016, where he had been since coming through the youth system of current French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The money received by Celtic from Lyon represents a reasonable deal for the Parkhead club, although there was no time for Rodgers to sign a replacement this summer. He did however sign former loanee Odsonne Edouard from PSG earlier in the window.

Check out some of the best tweets from Celtic fans in reaction to Dembele’s departure below.

West Brom fans react to potential Martin arrival

According to the Express & Star, ex-Norwich City pair Wes Hoolahan and Russell Martin are currently on trial with West Brom as free agents in a bid to secure a deal with the Baggies.

Martin and Hoolahan were both released by the Canaries this summer. This brought centre-back Martin’s nine-year stay at Carrow Road to an end. However, the 32-year-old could remain a Championship player by impressing on his trial and securing a contract at the Hawthorns.

[ad_pod ]

Martin fell out of favour at Norwich last season and was sent on loan to join Rangers for the second half of the campaign. Baggies boss Darren Moore would be taking a gamble by offering Martin a contract considering his poor recent form, but the Midlands side could certainly do with some extra depth at the back.

That being said, many West Brom fans don’t think that Martin is the answer and would rather see their club look towards academy products instead. Here is some of the reaction on Twitter from the Hawthorns faithful to the news that Martin was on trial with their club…

Liverpool made a mistake not offloading Solanke on loan

Liverpool rejected a handful of loan offers for Dominic Solanke in the summer in favour of keeping him at the club, according to The London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

After bringing in Fabinho, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and goalkeeper Alisson, attention turned to Liverpool’s fringe players.

The Merseyside outfit have plenty of talented youngsters coming through the academy that are yet to be given a chance in the first team.

Ben Woodburn and Harry Wilson were sent out on loan, and it was widely thought that Solanke would have the same fate.

However, according to The London Evening Standard, Liverpool opted against sending the striker on loan.

The publication states that Rangers, Aston Villa, Huddersfield Town,  Middlesbrough and Lyon had bids rejected.

Have the Reds made a mistake?

The coaches at Anfield clearly feel that Solanke – valued at £9m by Transfermarkt – would benefit from staying at the club this season.

However, if the 20-year-old wants to take that next step up, he needs to playing regularly at a competitive level.

Since moving to Liverpool from Chelsea in 2017, Solanke has not had any loan spells.

The striker is still at a very young age, but if he wants to develop at a faster pace and not risk getting left behind, he needs to be playing more.

Perhaps Jurgen Klopp will use the youngster in cup competitions this season, but time will tell.

Everton will surely be regretting failing to twice land Andriy Yarmolenko

Everton supporters have been drowning their sorrows in recent times after seeing their side suffer their first defeat under Marco Silva at the weekend.

The former Hull City and Watford chief took over at Goodison Park during the summer following the departure of Sam Allardyce, and he had made a solid start to life on Merseyside prior to the visit of basement side West Ham on Sunday. The Toffees had won one and drawn the other three of their four Premier League games before Sunday’s meeting with the Hammers, yet their unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt as a brace from Andriy Yarmolenko alongside a Marko Arnautovic strike inspired the visitors to a 3-1 win at Goodison Park.

Thus, there have been many disappointed Evertonians up and down the country in recent times, and they are unlikely to be thrilled at recent revelations from ex-midfielder Leon Osman, who admitted that the Toffees twice failed to land Yarmolenko in the past.

And after tormenting the Everton back four with two goals in the 3-1 West Ham victory at the weekend, the Merseysiders will surely be regretting failing to land the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) in years gone by.

The 28-year-old has produced the best football of his career while at Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kiev between 2006 and 2017, in which time the forward proved to be very prolific indeed in bagging 137 goals in 340 appearances for the club, helping them to three league titles, as well as two Ukrainian Cup crowns.

Thus, it’s not hugely surprising, given he has also netted 36 goals in 79 caps for Ukraine during his career, that Everton were keen on luring the Ukraine international to Goodison Park in the past, and Sunday showed exactly why they will regret failing to bring him to Merseyside.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace, who made the move to West Ham during the summer from the Bundesliga heavyweights, proved to be a handful for the Everton backline, netting the opener after fine work from Arnautovic and Pedro Obiang, before cutting inside onto his deadly left foot to fire past Jordan Pickford for his and the Hammers’ second.

Impressively, this was Yarmolenko’s first start in the Premier League for West Ham after a testing first few weeks at the London Stadium, which prompted reports during the international break to suggest that the Hammers were ‘sorry’ to have signed the forward during the close season.

They certainly won’t be sorry anymore given the 28-year-old produced an excellent attacking display to inspire them to their first win of the season on Sunday – in fact, it’s Everton that will be ‘sorry’ for failing to lure him to Goodison Park in the past.
