Collison suggests what Moyes should do against Liverpool

The performance from West Ham United during their 2-0 loss against Manchester City was seriously underwhelming, and things won’t get any easier for David Moyes’ men. They had just 22.7% of the game’s overall possession, with Moyes admitting that his game plan was to make things difficult for the reigning champions, rather than looking to go out and win.He was quoted by The Athletic as saying: “I think we were really well-organised defensively, with good organisation. The structure we set up was to make it difficult for Man City. The mindnumbing nature of West Ham’s performance has led to a conversation about whether they should be more adventurous against Liverpool, which ExWHUemployee made a poll about.

Jack Collison, who played 121 times for the club, scoring 14 goals and assisting a further 10, has had his say on the matter, claiming that Moyes should set his team out to attack more than they did at the Etihad.

There will be minimal expectations on West Ham’s shoulders, something he feels should inspire them to go out and “have some fun with it”.

Regardless of Collison’s advice, the Hammers simply have to improve with their tough run of fixtures in mind. Perhaps a lack of expectation could prove beneficial.

Meanwhile, Roshane Thomas had praise for one West Ham man after the Man City loss.

Liverpool’s predicted XI to face Watford

After edging past West Ham in thrilling fashion last Monday night, Liverpool know that they are just a few games away from potentially being crowned champions of England.

The Reds suffered major scare when the Hammers took the lead in the second-half, but Jurgen Klopp’s side responded well, and secured a 3-2 comeback win in the end.

The Liverpool boss will be intent that his players don’t show any signs of complacency or slacking off, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see him select a very strong line-up – even despite the FA Cup fifth round clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Below is a look at what the starting eleven could be for the Merseyside outfit on Saturday.

The one big change that Klopp could potentially make to his back-line, is the introduction of Joel Matip from the start.

The Cameroon international had been an impressive performer for the Reds before his injury, and still ranks highest amongst his teammates for interceptions per game in the top-flight with 1.5. And standing at 6 foot 5, he will surely be best suited to dealing with someone like Troy Deeney.

In midfield, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could come in for Naby Keita following the former RB Leipzig man’s disappointing display against West Ham – as per Sofascore, he was dribbled past three times, and didn’t manage a single shot on goal.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

And up front, Liverpool’s three amigos of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will once again be tasked with providing the firepower to lead the Reds to victory.

Predicted XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain,Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Meanwhile, Liverpool can save millions by giving this youngster an opportunity.

Southampton fans react to Victor Wanyama leaving Tottenham

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama has moved to MLS side Montreal Impact on a free, sparking reaction from fans of his former club Southampton.

The Kenya international spent three years on the south coast and was a key part of a successful side under Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman, with the former taking him to Spurs.

He has experienced mixed fortunes since that point, with injury and fitness issues possibly preventing him from unlocking his true potential, and reducing him to just 33 minutes played this term.

That has led some supporters to suggest that he was wrong to leave St Mary’s, as he has ended up in the MLS at just 28 years of age, and therefore his career has taken a sudden but drastic decline.

Such a view doesn’t take into consideration the factors which have led to the transfer, such as his injuries, while also ignoring the fact that Wanyama was a key player when he first moved to North London, achieving an average WhoScored rating of 7.2 from 36 league appearances in 2016/17.

He was also part of a squad that experienced the Champions League final last season – something he would have never been able to achieve had he remained with the Saints.

Other fans realise that fact, and have argued the case that the midfielder was right to move in order to pursue his career, also adding that it made financial sense to do so.

It is a shame that he has been unable to resurrect his Tottenham career due to something beyond his control, but supporters of both Spurs and Southampton should look back on his time in England with appreciation.

Southampton fans have also been busy reacting to the club’s social media post about a former player who played a crucial role at the club a few years ago…

Aston Villa fans react to interest in Jaden Philogene-Bidace

Aston Villa’s chances of survival may hang in the balance currently but they also face a difficult time off the pitch with interest increasing in some of their talented players.

Jack Grealish is likely to draw up a long list of potential suitors while another young player has attracted the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

According to Football Insider both Manchester City and Arsenal are keen on youngster Jaden Philogene-Bidace, who has featured for the under 18s side this term, scoring six goals in ten games.

He is a promising talent if those clubs are paying attention to him. Many Villa fans seem to realise that, and seem to be concerned at the fact that he could be persuaded away from Villa Park, with one or two supporters suggesting the club is unlikely to sell.

The likes of Grealish and Keinan Davis are examples of successful academy graduates, but the Villans have lack a production line of youth layers in recent years, which perhaps makes fans more keen to hold onto Philogene-Bidace.

This season showed the club was dependent on spending big sums of money in order to give themselves a chance of staying up, but it is not a very sustainable method of running a football club, and that means Villa have to concentrate on developing their own and make sure they play for them before jumping ship.

However, it may be difficult to prevent the lure of the top-six clubs when they come knocking, as one supporter alludes to. Another reaction shows a fan who isn’t concerned that Philogence-Bidace may leave, but at the fact that he hasn’t featured enough anyway.

Merino’s La Liga rise continues as valuation moves to £27m

Mikel Merino threatened to blossom into a top talent at Newcastle United but his career quickly tumbled following a promising opening to life in the North East.

Whispers of “this is Merino’s world and we’re just living in it” were relatively commonplace when the Spaniard was first seen operating at St James’ Park.

A loan deal was quickly made permanent but from that moment forward he seemed to fall out of Rafa Benitez’s plans and into the wilderness.

Real Sociedad capitalised on his dwindling importance and sanctioned a £10m move in the summer of 2018.

Almost two years later, the Spaniard is now worth £27m according to the popular football website Transfermarkt.

Transfermarkt recently updated their valuations of many players worldwide and Merino was a major market mover, rising from £18m to £27m.

That he was valued at just £7.2m in December 2018 speaks volumes about how rapidly he has developed in La Liga, and perhaps it’s a rise that will leave a lingering feeling of regret at St James’ Park.

It’s been an interesting journey for the 23-year-old midfielder, and there are a handful of notable landmarks to explain his rise in value.

Here, Football FanCast takes a look at three of those…

18/19 season – 3 goals and 5 assists from 24 La Liga starts

A groin injury disrupted Merino during the early stages of his maiden campaign with Sociedad, but he didn’t look back once he returned at the end of November.

He established himself as a regular in the starting XI following the turn of the year and finished the season with three goals and five assists from 24 starts in midfield.

Given the left-footed maestro typically operates from deep, the season return was certainly eye-catching, while eight yellow cards and one red showcased a touch of nastiness which has become synonymous with some of the great midfielders in history.

European U21 Championship winner 2019

Though he was not an integral player, Merino still played 256 minutes as Spain triumphed in the European U21 Championships in 2019.

He was vital to their qualification to the tournament, though, scoring once and assisting twice in five games.

The former Magpie’s biggest contribution came in a 2-1 win over Belgium in the group stage as he played all 90 minutes alongside Arsenal’s Dani Ceballos in midfield.

Scores in shock quarter-final win vs Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Barcelona have experienced their fair share of problems this season and Sociedad capitalised on the former’s demise in February.

In a dramatic 4-3 thriller at the Santiago Bernabeu, Merino scored what proved to be the decisive winning goal as the visitors progressed to the semi-final of the Copa Del Rey.

The Basque country outfit have since progressed to the final of the competition with a 3-1 aggregate win over CD Mirandes.

Merino could have his first club trophy come the end of the season.

Yan Couto links should excite Leeds fans

Leeds have had their fair share of talented youngsters on loan in recent times.

Jack Harrison has arguably been one of United’s best players this term, contributing to 12 goals, while Ben White’s heroics have seen Liverpool take a serious look at him.

Jack Clarke was a £10m signing for Spurs and Eddie Nketiah has bagged three goals for Arsenal since returning to the Emirates this January.

United may be on the verge of a return to the Premier League and the untold riches that come with that, but promotion seemingly isn’t going to put a halt to Leeds’ policy of loaning these talented young players.

Indeed, Phil Hay has recently stated that the Yorkshire club may be in for Yan Couto, and that is certainly an exciting prospect.

For a start, he was bought as a 17-year-old for €15m (£13.7m), and even if Man City are known for spending frivolously, you don’t command that fee at that age unless you’re something special.

All the signs point towards him being a future star, he’s previously been compared to Dani Alves, and if he goes on to have a career even as half as successful as the Barcelona legend he’ll go down as one of the all-time greats. Alves has racked up a total of 42 club honours in his career, while also amassing 118 caps for his country.

His protege is already showing promising signs too. According to Opta (via Goal) Couto led the chances created metric during the 2019 U17 World Cup, and he won the ball back more than any other player barring teammate Luan Patrick.

The idea of a full-back of that ilk playing under Bielsa is certainly mouth-watering.

Leeds won’t get to experience a fully-developed Couto as their reported interest in him is only on loan, but his raw and exciting talent could light up Elland Road over the next year. They just better hope it doesn’t end up stuttering those with a high ceiling already at Leeds – take Bryce Hosannah for example.

Liverpool fans react to Jadon Sancho development

Liverpool have been linked with a transfer swoop for Jadon Sancho in recent months but a recent report from the Daily Mirror suggests the Premier League leaders are not in the race for the Borussia Dortmund star, who has an asking price of £100m on his head.

Indeed, the report claims that Chelsea and Manchester United will go head-to-head to secure the 20-year-old’s coveted signature, but the Reds are not even monitoring the situation.

The same report goes on to suggest that the club are eyeing other targets who are more realistically valued at less than half the price.

Given Sancho’s meteoric rise to stardom since leaving Manchester City, it is easy to understand why the Anfield faithful may be disappointed by the news.

After all, this is a world class talent in the making who has scored 31 goals and provided 42 assists in 90 games for Dortmund, while he is equally adept on both the left and right wing.

And after reading the transfer update, a handful of supporters took out their frustration on club owners Fenway Sports Group.

Indeed, some fans called for the owners to leave while another suggested Liverpool are “a joke of a club”.

Here’s what the Liverpool fans had to say in response to the report…

Oli McBurnie has thrived since Leeds rejection

Leeds United’s decision to pass on the youthful talents of Oliver McBurnie back in 2010 has turned out to be an absolutely mindless piece of business.

The 6 foot 2 forward failed to impress whilst on the books at Elland Road as an academy product where he played alongside the likes of Lewie Coyle and Tyler Denton, who too have moved on from the west Yorkshire outfit.

McBurnie was released by the club at U14 level in 2010, and ultimately, he hasn’t looked back since.

He found himself down in League One at nearby Bradford by 2013 where he had to endure a gruelling spell in non-league football at Chester, but this would have only shaped him to become the top-flight star he is today.

The frontman would go on to sign for United’s Championship rivals Swansea City for a measly £250k in 2015, but how has he fared since then?

Where is McBurnie now?

Well following a 24-goal campaign at the Liberty Stadium, McBurnie attracted the interest of the Premier League, which is where he finds himself today.

He joined Sheffield United in a whopping £20m deal in the summer and has become a frequent presence in leading the line for Chris Wilder.

McBurnie has made 26 appearances in the big time this term, scoring four goals, including a strike against Manchester United – a team he once featured for in the Milk Cup, three years after his Leeds exit.

The striker has been averaging 1.5 shots, 1.2 clearances and one tackle per game, via WhoScored, so he’s been having an influence at either end of the pitch with the Blades sat contending for Europe in seventh place, just two points behind the top five.

But it’s not just Bramall Lane that has seen his exploits first hand this campaign as he’s managed to earn nine caps for his national team, Scotland – starting two of their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

With McBurnie arguably surpassing his £20m value in the Premier League, Leeds have undoubtedly missed out on a massive opportunity. Not just because of his goalscoring prowess, but such figures would have landed the club some lucrative finances.

Spurs fans react to links with PSG defender Thomas Meunier

Having taking the decision to let Kyle Walker-Peters go out on loan, and with Serge Aurier continuing to be his usually unreliable self, it’s no surprise to see Tottenham look to solve their miseries at right-back.

According to 90min, Jose Mourinho’s side are prepared to make a big push to sign PSG defender Thomas Meunier on a free transfer when his contract comes to an end in the summer.

The report claims that they are willing to give him a bumper new deal, and hope that his relationship with Belgian compatriot Toby Alderweireld could help swing things in their favour.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

After hearing about the report, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their latest transfer target.

Some Spurs fans expressed their disappointment at seeing their side go after a player on a free transfer, with one supporter even suggesting that this is the first sign of them going back to the Juande Ramos days.

Just like every other club this summer, Spurs are going to have to be extremely smart with their resources considering the situation surrounding football at the moment.

Getting Meunier in on a free transfer would allow them to focus splashing the cash elsewhere, and simultaneously bring in a player who has had considerable experience playing in the Champions League season after season for PSG.

It’s a move that makes a lot of sense.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to an update on their chase for this left-back.

Spurs fans discuss links to Strasbourg’s Mohamed Simakan

Tottenham Hotspur’s season may effectively be over but it appears as if manager Jose Mourinho is planning ahead for the new campaign – whenever that may be.

According to RMC Sport, Spurs have enquired over the availability of Strasbourg defender Mohamed Simakan, and the Ligue 1 outfit are resigned to losing their young star.

The 19-year-old has played both centrally and at right-back this term, racking up 25 appearances across the French domestic competitions as well as Europa League qualifying.

Simakan helped steer his side to just a 1-0 defeat against financial powerhouses Paris Saint-Germain earlier this season, too.

Mourinho could well be in need of defensive reinforcements this summer with Jan Vertonghen looking likely to depart north London following the expiry of his contract whilst the future of Juan Foyth is also still up in the air.

Supporters have been giving their opinions on Twitter this week after the news was relayed by several fan accounts, and many seem to be behind the idea of signing the young prodigy – he’s currently valued at £6.48m by Transfermarkt.

The report hints he could cost in excess of €15m (£13m) due to the rising interest in the defender.
