Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat later this afternoon, but their opponents come in the form of Garry Monk’s former club Swansea City.

The 40-year-old enjoyed a fine 12-year spell at the Welsh club, firstly as a player and then as their manager in the Premier League.

He was appointed as the new Owls manager back at the start of September as the club finally appointed a permanent successor to Steve Bruce.

Defensively, the Owls have usually been the part having kept four clean sheets in nine Championship matches, so captain Tom Lees will have to wait for an opportunity.

There’s damning with faint praise, but is there such a thing as praise with faint damning?

Because that’s the situation that the staff and players at Sheffield United might just find himself in after some rather weird remarks from former Blades boss Neil Warnock.

What’s he said?

Speaking to talkSPORT, Warnock praised Wilder for the work that he is doing at Bramall Lane right now even though the players he’s working work aren’t exactly of the highest quality:

“It’s an amazing system. I’m not being disrespectful, but he’s got bang average players playing top of the Premier League standards. That’s what you talk about man-management, these lads believe in what Chris is doing and good luck, the fans are loving it and I’m sure they’ll do well.”

Unleashing the beasts

Warnock has always been one that isn’t afraid to voice his opinion on all things football, but this might come back to bite him in the backside at the end of the season.

The praise for Wilder just seems to be never-ending, with ex-pros like Tony Cascarino saying that he should be considered for ‘bigger’ Premier League jobs further down the road, but a comment like this, is exactly what players like those in the Bramall Lane dressing room should be looking for, extra motivation.

Whilst Warnock might not exactly hold the highest esteem when it comes to the world of football, much in the same way John Terry made disparaging remarks about Robbie Savage a number of years ago, the chance to go and prove someone wrong should be a big motivator for the players as they go on this season.

Whilst some might write the Blades off, including to a certain extent us at FFC as well, they should take all these comments and use it as a way to prove everyone wrong.

They’ve already exceeded expectations by even getting into this division, and a quote like this might just be that little bit extra that they need to really kick on and make this season a memorable one.

According to The Sun, Manchester United are ready to battle Barcelona for the services of Rennes starlet Eduardo Camavinga.

What’s the word?

The 17-year-old has been turning heads across Europe thanks to his incredibly young breakthrough into the first-team at Rennes, and he has already featured 16 times across all competitions this season – including playing the full 90 minutes in his side’s shock 2-1 win over PSG back in August.

Now, The Sun claim United are set to take on Spanish giants Barcelona to try and seal a deal for the promising midfielder, and that the Red Devils view him as the “long-term successor to Paul Pogba in the heart of midfield”. The report further claims Camavinga has a £25.6m buyout clause currently in effect in his contract.

Statement of intent

Make no mistake about it, if United can secure Camavinga’s signing ahead of Barcelona then that really would be a major coup. The Frenchman has been earning rave reviews for his impressive performances in his fledgling career, and was duly named as the youngest player in Ligue 1 history to be named player of the month.

His performance against PSG was particularly note-worthy, especially considering the calibre of opponents he was coming up against in the midfield battle. The French giants had the likes of Marco Verratti, Julian Draxler and Marquinhos patrolling the centre of the park, but Camavinga took the game to them and powered his side to victory.

As per Sofascore, as well as providing an assist, he made three tackles, won ten duels, and had an incredible 97% pass accuracy, whilst Verratti in particular had a night to forget – the Italian was hustled and harried by his young counterpart, losing possession ten times and committing two fouls.

Speaking after the match, his manager Julien Stephan said: “He played a match, indeed, like the whole team – very interesting. We are talking to him. He is someone who is also very well-constructed intellectually, who knows how to question himself, who knows how to ask the right questions.”

Stephan’s verdict on Camavinga paints a picture of a teenage prodigy who looks to better himself in every player, and it is little surprise to see the likes of Barcelona be interested in him. If United can steal a march on the Catalans, then it would be a major statement of intent indeed.

Tottenham have targeted the signing of Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo, according to The Express.

What’s the latest?

Spurs have been tracking the attacking midfielder for some time now but a change in manager could have seen a change in approach in the transfer market, but Jose Mourinho too is reportedly interested in the playmaker.

With Christian Eriksen possibly on his way out in January, the Italy international would act as a like-for-like replacement and ensure the new boss still has creative players at his disposal.

However, he could face competition for his signature from his former club Manchester United, who are believed to be chasing a £50m deal for the 20-year-old.

Another point of difficulty for Spurs is that Zaniolo only signed a new five-year contract in the summer, and therefore it is possible that neither he nor Roma has any interest in him departing the club.

Necessary step?

Tottenham have been reliant on the creativity of Christian Eriksen for several years now, and it is no surprise that his downturn in form has coincided with terrible results on the pitch.

The Denmark international looks a shadow of his former self and no longer seems happy in a Spurs shirt, which is reflected by his two goals and one assist this season.

It is probably best for both parties that he moves on, and another hungrier talent is brought in – Zaniolo fits the mould.

He is a different type of playmaker to Eriksen, more similar to Dele Alli in the way he finds space effectively in and around the penalty box, often making his way into goal-scoring positions – with seven goals to his name in 2019/20.

As a result, he would be a good addition to the squad and is a player Mourinho would need if Eriksen left. Although the Dane hasn’t reached his typical high standards, he still possesses a quality which could benefit the squad on occasion.

Daniel Levy bringing in a big-money signing would signal the ambition and trust he has in Mourinho, which would signal to him that the club wants to move in the right direction.

وأوضحت أنه على الرغم من ذلك، فإن تشيلسي ينوي تجديد عقد توخيل لمدة عامين مع خيار العام الثالث.

وأشارت إلى أن توخيل حريص على توقيع العقد الجديد لأنه كان لديه في البداية تحفظات بشأن العقد قصير الأجل الذي عرضه عليه تشيلسي بعد إقالة فرانك لامبارد في بداية العام.

كما أن العقد الجديد سيحقق لـ توخيل زيادة على راتبه الحالي البالغ 7 ملايين جنيه إسترليني.

علّق نجم ريال مدريد كريم بنزيما، على استدعائه لقائمة منتخب فرنسا استعدادًا لمنافسات يورو 2020، للمرة الأولى منذ عام 2015.

وقرر ديديه ديشامب، المدير الفني للمنتخب الفرنسي، استدعاء بنزيما، في قائمة ضمت 26 لاعبًا.

وعبر حسابه الرسمي على موقع “إنستجرام” نشر بنزيما صورة له بقميص منتخب فرنسا.

وكتب بنزيما: “فخور جدًا بهذه العودة إلى المنتخب الفرنسي وبالثقة التي حصلت عليها، شكرًا لعائلتي وأصدقائي وفريقي، ولكم.. ولكل من دعموني دائمًا.. الحمد لله”.

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes has signed a new contract at the club, per their official website, despite being linked with Tottenham Hotspur throughout the summer.

What’s the word?

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the Portugal international in the most recent transfer window as they attempted to bolster their squad.

A bid was tabled for Fernandes, worth €45m (£38.4m) plus €20m (£17m) in add-ons if Spurs won the Premier League, per an official statement from Sporting president Frederico Varandas, via Metro.

He has now committed his future to the club, with The Mirror reporting that his release clause has increased from an original £65m to £85m.

No room for negotiation

Spurs are unlikely to be able to persuade Sporting to do business at £38.4m here.

The add-ons weren’t deemed realistic by the Portuguese club and perhaps rightly so; Spurs currently lie 20 points off leaders Liverpool.

One has to believe, then, that the chance to bring Fernandes in has gone.

They did sign Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis on an initial loan deal, but Fernandes has the power to be a genuine goalscoring threat from midfield unlike any other member of the squad.

He has already scored nine goals and registered six assists this term.

Now, though, Sporting have all the leverage and, if they wish to sell him, can merely point to the clause; chairman Daniel Levy should let this one lie instead of breaking the club’s transfer record.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have laid into one star for his performance in midweek.
