Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain turned in a mixed display as Liverpool beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 on Saturday.

The Reds once again avoided defeat in 2019/20 with a fine win over the Seagulls.

Two goals from Virgil van Dijk proved decisive at Anfield, moving them 11 points clear of Manchester City, who drew 2-2 with Newcastle United on the same day.

There were some nerves towards the end, though, with goalkeeper Alisson Becker sent off after handling the ball outside the area. Adrian was introduced in place of Oxlade-Chamberlain to replace him and instantly conceded, with Lewis Dunk netting from the free-kick that resulted from Alisson’s infringement.

Why was Oxlade-Chamberlain the man sacrificed?

Deployed in a midfield three alongside Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum, the former Arsenal star struggled to have a genuine impact in the final third throughout the encounter.

He had 51 touches of the ball, per WhoScored, and registered a pass completion rate of 81%, but he had just one shot on target and completed just one dribble.

Defensively, he made two tackles and five interceptions but the 26-year-old was dribbled past on three occasions and was dispossessed twice.

This was a stop-start display from a midfielder so known for his dynamism.

A flat midfield

Oxlade-Chamberlain needs to be given a freer role than the one he was asked to perform in on Saturday.

As it was, he was stuck between a rock and a hard place, as he did not manage to push forward enough but was also rather ineffective at actually winning the ball back when Brighton had it.

Of course, Liverpool’s system does not allow for an out-and-out number 10, with Roberto Firmino often dropping deep to provide the link between the attack and the midfield.

As it is, then, it feels like ‘the Ox’ is a square peg in a round hole.

He has shown that he is not particularly adept at the defensive side of the game and he is unable to do the attacking side when played in such a deep role.

While Jurgen Klopp’s men won and sit top of the league, this is a puzzle he will have to solve in the coming weeks and months.

أكد ديفيد مويس مدرب وست هام، أن النادي الإنجليزي لا يفكر في التخلي عن اللاعب ديكلان رايس، في موسم الانتقالات الصيفي المقبل.

وارتبط ديكلان رايس بخطوة الرحيل عن وست هام في الصيف الماضي، بعد اهتمام نادي تشيلسي بالحصول على خدماته.

وذكرت تقارير صحفية مؤخرًا أن تشيلسي جدد اهتمامه بضم رايس هذا الصيف، كما أشارت إلى تواجد اللاعب نفسه على رادار مانشستر يونايتد.

من جانبه، قال ديفيد مويس في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “مترو” الإنجليزية: “لا أعتقد أن مالكي وست هام أو أنا لدينا أي نية لخسارة ديكلان رايس”.

وأضاف: “لقد تأهلنا للتو إلى الدوري الأوروبي، إنه إنجاز رائع، وكان ديكلان رايس جزءً كبيرًا من ذلك”.

وواصل: “نريد أن يكون رايس جزءً أيضًا مما سنفعله العام المقبل كذلك”.

وبعد الضغط عليه بشأن ما إذا كان واثقًا من بقاء رايس في وست هام، أجاب مويس: “نعم.. بنسبة 100 %”.

Alex Iwobi has been speaking to Evertonfc.com ahead of the trip to Anfield this evening and he has alluded to a growing relationship with another of the club’s summer signings.

What’s the word?

Iwobi has impressed in fleeting bursts since making the move to Goodison Park but consistency has been difficult to come by.

Marco Silva’s squad rotation has rendered it difficult for the Nigeria international to fully get into his groove, but there has been enough promise to suggest he could play a key role at the club moving forward.

Iwobi’s statistics have never been particularly groundbreaking and the fact he is yet to claim a single assist for the Toffees attests to that. The highest number of assists he managed to achieve in one season was in the 2018/19 campaign, which he finished with six to his name from 35 Premier League appearances.

But, as is so often the case for creative players, Iwobi is often the man behind the assist, the player who unlocks the door and creates the space for the final pass to be made.

Statistically speaking there is no label or measurement to track these types of contributions, but the former Arsenal man’s ability to assist the assist, if you will, was evident at both Southampton and Leicester.

Djibril Sidibe, who has been capped 18 times by France, was the player picked out on both occasions, and Iwobi has suggested a devastating understanding is beginning to flourish between the two players, per Evertonfc.com.

“I have linked up with Djibril in training. Every time I get the ball he is telling me he will be making the run, so I just have to find him.

“Against Southampton, we did the same thing [for the goal].

“Our relationship is developing and we have to keep it going and produce more so we can win games.”

It’s no coincidence that Everton’s downturn in form this season has arrived in tandem with a dip in the standard previously set by Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The Iceland international was the beating heart of the attacking play last season, registering six assists and 13 goals throughout the season.

But the spark that defined his game last season has been absent, and Iwobi’s arrival has certainly given Silva something to think about given he has both Richarlison and Bernard to chose from on the left.

The relationship the summer arrival is beginning to establish with Sidibe has already proven to be a productive one and it could prove to be a fruitful weapon during the AS Monaco man’s loan spell.

Sigurdsson has the ability to be a game-changing player on his day, but Iwobi’s ability to connect the dots is beginning to come to the fore at Everton.

While that’s a positive sign for the club as a whole, it could reduce Sigurdsson’s importance and see him on the substitutes bench more often than he would like.

وأضاف: “محمد الأتربي طلب مني المعاونة والمساندة وكان ردي عليه أنني تحت أمر اللجنة ونادي الزمالك، وهدفنا خدمة الكيان العظيم والمحترم حتى نصل به إلى بر الأمان”.

واستكمل: “سنكون متواجدين غدًا في الزمالك لتسليم كل شيء للجنة الجديدة، وسيكون هناك احتفالية داخل النادي بتواجد اللجنتين”.

وأتم: “كامل دعمنا للجنة الجديدة التي ستدير نادي الزمالك، وأتمنى من الجماهير والأعضاء مساندتها”.

واختتم: “سيكون هناك تنسيق ومشاورات مع اللجنة الجديدة، ولابد أن يُستكمل مشوارنا”.

أشاد الفرنسي كريم بنزيما، مُهاجم فريق ريال مدريد، بمواطنه وزميله في المنتخب الفرنسي، كيليان مبابي، مُهاجم باريس سان جيرمان، بعدما تدرب مع النجم الشاب.

بنزيما لم يسبق له من قبل وأنّ تدرب مع مبابي، في ظل استبعاده من فرنسا لأكثر من 5 سنوات، والثنائي تدربا معًا لأول مرة، بعد عودة بنزيما للمنتخب الفرنسي، استعدادًا للمشاركة في بطولة كأس أمم أوروبا (يورو 2020).

وقال بنزيما في مؤتمر صحفي أمام وسائل الإعلام بمعسكر المنتخب الفرنسي: “لا أحب المُقارنات، مبابي لا يزال شابًا، إنه ظاهرة”.

وأضاف: “كان من الجيد أنّ أتدرب معه، ونلعب معًا بلمسة واحدة ونتحرك، إنه سريع جدًا وممتاز أمام المرمى، هو لاعب رائع للغاية وجيد جدًا”.

وعن التفاهم مع أنطوان جريزمان مُهاجم برشلونة: “أعتقد أننا لاعبان ذو مستوى عالٍ، لا يتعين علينا التفكير فيما يجب أن نقوم به، الأمر يكون تلقائيًا”.

وواصل: “ليس من الضروري أنّ يغطي أحد على الآخر، هو يحب أن يمتلك الكرة ويتحرك ويلعب بلمسة أو لمستين، أنا أحب اللعب معه في الملعب لأنه يعرف كيف يفعل كل شيء”.

وعن علاقته مع أوليفيه جيرو: “لقد التقينا بالفعل في مباراة الذهاب أمام تشيلسي، وتحدثنا بهدوء لمدة خمس دقائق، والآن أهم شيء هو مساعدة المنتخب الوطني”.

One of the best performers on that night was Heung-Min Son but Mourinho decided to give the match ball to none other than the Premier League debutant and a big Spurs talent, Troy Parrott.

Needless to say, that was a huge moment between the manager and the young star in making, and many of the fans were simply gushing over that lovely gesture, showering Mourinho with praise.

Now Parrott has been handed his debut in the Premier League, it seems that the Special One could stay true to his words.

For the fans, this seems like a wonderful thing as the young player is certainly one to keep an eye on.

It remains to be seen, however, if he can continue this trend moving forward.

Everton are reportedly linked with a move for Red Bull Salzburg’s Hwang Hee-chan this summer. 

According to the Liverpool ECHO (posted via @TheGwladysSt), the club are interested in the forward as they make their plans for the upcoming transfer window.

The report states Carlo Ancelotti is prioritising ‘quality over quantity’ and doesn’t expect to land any ‘big money deals’.

Hee-chan has had a terrific season with Salzburg after returning from a loan spell at Hamburg last summer. The 24-year-old has accumulated 13 goals and 16 assists this term, including the goal and assist he bagged against Liverpool in the Champions League (via Transfermarkt).

According to Transfermarkt, Hee-chan is valued at £9 million, indicating a fair asking price should Everton opt to pursue a move for the South Korean international.

Blues fans seem to already be sold on the idea of adding the striker to their ranks. One supporter thinks he would be an ‘absolutely unreal signing’ whilst another remembers his performance against the Reds and has commented ‘looked superb against Liverpool’.

Meanwhile, one fan even compared him to former Toffee Andrey Kanchelskis. They were perhaps referring to the fact that he too was a goalscorer, netting 20 times in 52 appearances for Everton, and that he is a similar stature to Hee-chan with a height of 1.78m compared to the South Korean’s 1.77m.
