Aye, Aye, Skipper!

Carl Hooper compiled what he understandably described afterwards as the most satisfying hundred of his long, turbulent career yesterday

Tony Cozier12-Apr-2002Carl Hooper compiled what he understandably described afterwards as the most satisfying hundred of his long, turbulent career yesterday. The West Indies captain’s unbeaten 108 on the opening day of the first Cable & Wireless Test, his 11th in his 93rd Test, was neither his most fluent nor his most commanding. But it was, unquestionably, the most significant. It was his first before his adoring compatriots on the Bourda ground that has been his cricketing home since he was a teenaged prodigy, a goal that had eluded him in five previous Tests. His highest effort had been his 69 against South Africa last year in his first match as captain.Above all, it led the West Indies from an early, familiar crisis of 44 for three at Brian Lara’s unlucky dismissal for a duck to a comfortable, if not yet commanding, 270 for four by the end of a hot, sunny day.It also established Hooper’s credentials as leader, under increased criticism following the team’s latest debacles in Sri Lanka and Sharjah. He could not have achieved the recovery alone and there was solid, assured support in successive partnerships, each worth 113, with two other Guyanese: Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul. What the trio one Afro-Guyanese, the others Indo-Guyanese achieved in five hours of quality batting is reflected by the scoreboard. The effect of their mission on the people of a country so often torn by racial divisions could be judged by the joyful response of the 8 000 or so in the stands.Sarwan, nimble of footwork, sound in technique and fluent in strokeplay, was flawless for just under four hours for 53. Then, for no explicable reason, he gifted his wicket with a slack drive to mid-off from off-spinner Sarandeep Singh ten minutes after tea.The left-handed Chanderpaul, aggressive from the start, took advantage of opponents who visibly wilted to reach 57 with seven boundaries at the end of a day extended by 35 minutes in spite of 36 overs from leg-spinner Anil Kumble and Sarandeep. The Indian indiscipline was obvious in their 21 no-balls, their desperation evident with a field placing that posted a solitary man on the leg-side in the closing overs. It was a marked change from their mood at noon. When Hooper marched down the steps of the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion he knows so well to pass Lara on his way to the middle, India’s worthy but underrated fast bowler Javagal Srinath had created havoc in an incisive opening spell. After a flurry of boundaries across the bone-hard, lightning fast outfield, he found the requisite fuller length and proper line.In his second over, he brushed Chris Gayle’s tentative outside edge for a catch to the keeper, a familiar dismissal for the tall left-hander.In his fourth over, he twice overpitched to Stuart Williams and was driven each time for off-side fours.Undeterred, he pitched up again and pinned Williams on his uncertain left pad for a clear lbw verdict from Australian umpire Daryl Harper, along with the Sri Lankan Ashoka deSilva standing as the two members of the International Cricket Council’s new, so-called elite umpires’ panel. There was nothing elite about Harper’s next decision. In his first match since fracturing his left elbow in a Sri Lanka on December 15, Lara was kept watchfully on the defensive for ten testing deliveries by Srinath. The left-hander offered uncertainly at his 11th and Harper raised his finger on appeal as wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta gathered.Lara’s obvious shock before trudging off was shown to be justified. Television replays revealed the bat clearly missed the bat, the umpire apparently influenced by its contact with the left-hander’s pad.It left a difficult void for Hooper to fill. He brought rich form into the match, following his 222 and unbeaten 149 in his last two innings in the Busta Shield but he started like a novice. His first ball, from Srinath, deflected from the inside-edge and the flying Dasgupta could only get the fingers of his left glove onto the chance. He was ten and having problems with medium-pacer Sanjay Banger when, aiming to leg, he outside-edged an outswinger that bisected the inattentive first and second slips.Yet Hooper never lost focus as had once been his tendency. With Sarwan in full control at the opposite end, he gradually found timing and confidence. Two boundaries in the same over from Kumble, a straight-drive and a lofted straight-drive, announced the transformation into the genuine Hooper. After that, not much bothered him except, perhaps, Sarwan’s wastefulness. On Sarwan’s dismissal, Chanderpaul ensured India would not regain control, he and his captain taking 33 off three overs.Hooper advanced from 90 to 96 with a trademark stroke, lofting Kumble into the Rohan Kanhai Stand at long-off, and completed his hundred with a back-cut boundary off the leg-spinner ten minutes later.Delight and relief were etched all over Hooper’s usually expressionless face and around the ground as Guyanese of every race rose to acclaim their hero.

Pundit unsure of Nuno’s demands in Tottenham deal - Exclusive

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Graham Roberts has raised doubts over Nuno Espirito Santo’s imminent move to Tottenham.

According to Sky Sports, the Portuguese’s representatives are in London for talks with Fabricio Paratici about replacing Jose Mourinho in north London.

However, Roberts reckons there could be problems about the number of backroom staff members that Santo wants to bring with him.

The former Wolves boss has recently held talks with both Crystal Palace and Everton, although he couldn’t agree a deal with either and remains a free agent.

However, it would appear third time lucky for the 47-year-old, who’s on the verge of sorting out his differences and finally putting an end to Spurs’ long wait to appoint their next manager.

But Roberts has questioned Santo’s demands over bringing an entire team with him, suggesting that it’s completely unnecessary with the likes of Ledley King and Ryan Mason already at the club.

He told Football FanCast:

“Reading between the lines, he wants to bring in about 200 of them [backroom staff] who want to come with him to get on the pay structure.

“But you’ve got Ledley King, Ryan Mason and other coaches at the stadium already.

“If a new coach comes in, Ryan will go back to his youth development squad, but you’ve got Ledley King and a few others, but Tottenham have them in place.”

Ruwan Kalpage fourth A team coach in nine months

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) has appointed Ruwan Kalpage as the coach of the Sri Lanka A team; the youth team’s fourth coach in just nine months

Rex Clementine07-May-2002The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) has appointed Ruwan Kalpage as the coach of the Sri Lanka A team; the youth team’s fourth coach in just nine months.Kalpage, previously a specialist BCCSL fielding coach, has been appointed for the forthcoming series between Sri Lanka A and India A, taking over from Chandika Hathurusingha who coached the side during the ICC Six-Nation tournament in Namibia last month.Hathurusingha, 33, a ACB Level II coach, has not given up his ambitions of making a return to the national squad and admits that he is not yet ready for a full-time coaching position.Hathurusingha had in turn replaced a disgruntled Roshan Mahanama, now a member of the interim committee running the BCCSL, after a breakdown in communication with the chairman of selectors Michael Tissera and interim committee member Sidath Wettimuny.Mahanama came in for school friend Hemantha Devpriya, a former wicket-keeper batsman, after the Pakistan A series last year. Devpriya now works with the Development squad.Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Graeme Labrooy has been appointed alongside Kalpage as team manager during the India series.Bandula Warnapura, the BCCSL’s Operations Director, admitted that constant change of coaches was far from ideal and revealed that the BCCSL will call for formal applications for a more permanent post during or after the India series.

Newcastle set to be offered Andrea Belotti

It’s ‘likely’ that Newcastle United will be offered the chance to sign long-term transfer target Andrea Belotti on a cut-price deal, according to Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder.

The lowdown

The 27-year-old has been a prolific striker for Serie A club Torino, scoring 105 goals in 228 appearances and finishing third in the race for the league’s Golden Boot in 2016/17. He’s currently on Euro 2020 duty with semi-finalists Italy as a back-up to favoured centre-forward Ciro Immobile.

Belotti has now entered the final year of his contract at Torino, who will be wary of the risk that he leaves on a free transfer next summer.

Former Torino boss Davide Nicola has labelled him a ‘unique’ forward and a ‘great finisher’.

The latest

Ryder says that Newcastle have long ‘kept tabs’ on Belotti, who was ‘scouted before [the] pandemic’.

The 27-year-old’s contract contains an £85m release clause, but Torino are now thought to have slashed their demands to £29m with less than 12 months left on the deal, a 66% reduction in his asking price. [Chronicle Live]

However, Ryder expresses doubt as to whether Newcastle will take up the opportunity to bring him in. With transfer funds in ‘short supply’ and the club shrouded in a ‘veil of uncertainty’, it may not be realistic. [Chronicle Live]

The verdict

Belotti will surely have no shortage of suitors at that price tag, and a move to a Premier League club could leave Newcastle pondering what might have been.

If this deal had been available 12 months ago, you’d have been urging the club to pounce. However, the £20m addition of the prolific Callum Wilson means that the centre-forward position is no longer a transfer priority, and even if Bruce wanted to play two up top, it would be sensible to use an in-house option for the moment and invest in improving the squad elsewhere.

In other news, could this be when Newcastle learn their arbitration result?

In the words of calypsonian David Rudder, it was high mas’

Haydn Gill06-May-2002In the words of calypsonian David Rudder, it was high mas’.Uncontrollable celebrations, typical of any Carnival or Grand Kadooment, unfolded at Kensington Oval yesterday afternoon after the West Indies predictably completed an emphatic series-levelling victory over India in the third Cable & Wireless Test.It was the West Indies’ first win in a Test in nine matches and ten long months. And when it was achieved at exactly 1:11 p.m., it would not have been out of place to believe they had won the World Cup final or the big Caribbean Lotto jackpot of $2.75 million. The cacophony of noises around the ground made it almost impossible to hear the voices of the captains and coaches at the after-match Press conference.Sweet calypso and reggae blared from the sound systems on the lower level of Greenidge & Haynes Stand; horns and percussion instruments reverberated around the Oval; and excited fans screamed themselves hoarse outside the Sir Garfield Sobers Pavilion. And who can forget Julian Hunte, who arrived at the Oval minutes before victory armed with a Barbados flag and conch-shell and dressed in a colourful outfit.Other spectators danced and pranced a lap around the ground with countless flags of almost every nationality in the region. Alcoholic beverages might have had something to do it with.It might have been a disappointment to some of the 10,000 fans in the stands that the match finished so early in the day. Vendors with loads of food would have been particularly worried when India lost three wickets inside the first 90 minutes. In the end, the visitors, who have now lost seven times in eight matches at Kensington, managed to set the West Indies a straightforward target of five, which was achieved with no bother. India, resuming their second innings on 169 for four, still 123 runs in arrears, were eventually bowled out for 296.An hour after the completion of the match, about 2 000 fans were still around basking in the glory of the West Indies’ first Test win since July 22 last year.

Sunderland keeping tabs on McCart

An update has emerged on St Johnstone defender Jamie McCart, regarding Sunderland’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to the Scottish Sun, as transcribed by NotTheOldFirm, Sunderland are one of the clubs showing an interest in signing St Johnstone central defender Jamie McCart this summer.

The report claims Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Barnsley and Hibernian are also tracking the defender following his impressive season up in Scotland. He is said to be in the final 12 months of his contract, with a host of sides looking to pounce on his potential availability, including the Black Cats.

Forget Sanderson

Sunderland were dealt a blow earlier this month as The Athletic revealed that Wolves are planning to keep Dion Sanderson at Molineux this summer. Wolves want to retain the centre-back and loan him out to a Championship side, ruling out any chance of a return to the Stadium of Light.

Kristjaan Speakman was reportedly keen on sealing a deal for the defender, following his loan spell last season, but now appears set to miss out on his signature.

Whilst this is frustrating for the club, it is now time to forget about Sanderson and concentrate on a swoop for McCart. The 24-year-old enjoyed a terrific campaign in the Scottish Premiership for St Johnstone and could be a fantastic, much-needed, addition to Lee Johnson’s squad. The ex-Bristol City coach needs a centre-back to replace Sanderson and McCart could prove to be an upgrade on the loanee, which would soon make supporters forget about the Wolves man.

Earlier this year, St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson heaped praise on his centre-back. He said that he is a great defender and works hard on the pitch.

He told The Courier:

“Jamie brings good balance on the left side, but he is a very good defender, first and foremost.

“Jamie works extremely hard and is very good on the ball, stepping in and playing. That’s something we have been getting him to do more of this season. But I don’t think people realise how good a defender he is.

“He’s defending his box really well.”

The £450k-rated powerhouse averaged a sublime WhoScored rating of 6.91 in the Scottish Premiership, winning 5.5 aerial battles per game. Sanderson, meanwhile, averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.72 across 26 appearances for Sunderland in League One, winning 2.3 aerial battles per game. McCart also made more tackles, interceptions and clearances than the Wolves loanee managed in the third tier.

McCart could turn out to be an upgrade on Sanderson and be a top-quality signing for Johnson as he has proven he can perform in the top-flight in Scotland. Dropping down to the third division in England could allow him to thrive even more, so Speakman and Johnson need to do all they can to get this deal over the line in the coming weeks.

AND in other news, Johnson must seal SAFC deal for “outstanding” £9.3k-p/w beast, he won’t cost a penny…
