Rose Bowl under scrutiny by ICC

International Cricket Council representative Clive Lloyd inspected The Rose Bowl today – but NOT the controversial wicket.

Simon Walter (Daily Echo)31-Jul-2002International Cricket Council representative Clive Lloyd inspected The Rose Bowl today – but NOT the controversial wicket.West Indies legend Lloyd was due at West End with a representative of the England and Wales Cricket Board with the ICC in need of confirmation that The Rose Bowl is equipped to stage its inaugural one-day international between South Africa and Zimbabwe on July 10 next year. But there are already doubts as to whether The Rose Bowl has a wicket that can do justice to international cricket after the county were docked eight points for the pitch prepared for last week’s championship match with Lancashire. But Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove is confident that the events of the last fortnight – the wickets for the India clash and Lancashire day-nighter were also criticised – won’t stop Hampshire Cricket being given the go-ahead.An England one-day international is still expected to take place at The Rose Bowl in 2004 and Bransgrove wants the ground to host Test match cricket in 2005.Speaking before the inspection he said: “This has been the first time we’ve had a wicket that’s misbehaved here. I don’t think it’ll be a problem.”The ICC inspectors will be looking at access to the ground and local hotels, that sort of thing.”Director of cricket Tim Tremlett said: “Clive Lloyd will be checking on things like security and facilities for players, umpires, match referees and the media.”They will not be looking at the square – that’s something else that the ECB are looking into.”Hampshire’s appeal against the docking of eight championship points will be heard by a three-man ECB panel at Lord’s tomorrow morning. Two Hampshire representatives will be asked to put the club’s case to a panel chaired by Gerard Elias QC and including former Middlesex chairman Alan Moss and ECB representative John Pickup.Alan Fordham, Tony Brown and Chris Wood, the ECB trio who inspected the square at West End last week, will also be present, along with Hampshire groundsman Nigel Gray, who will be called as a witness.

Phil Hay drops Leeds United transfer update

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered an update on Leeds United’s pursuit of Kristoffer Klaesson.

What’s the story?

With the new Premier League season now less than a month away, Marcelo Bielsa will no doubt be desperate for some reinforcements to be made to his first-team squad.

Reports in recent days have suggested that Valerenga shot-stopper, Klaesson, is someone who the Whites have identified as a potential replacement for Kiko Casilla, who of course departed on a season-long loan to Spanish side Elche.

Now, via Twitter, Hay has delivered an update on where things stand, saying: “Club are making progress with that one. Decent chance. Would need a work permit though.”

Fans will be excited

At only 20, Klaesson is at the opposite end of his career compared to Casilla, and would provide Leeds’ number one goalkeeper Illan Meslier with the kind of competition needed at the top level to truly thrive.

Valerenga’s sporting director has openly spoken about the fine work Victor Orta has done in trying to recruit his club’s player, saying: “The best clubs, and the best environments, work long-term with player recruitment. There, Victor is one of the brightest in the subject. Leeds arrived on the field in the summer of 2019 and have been very good. We have had a good dialogue with them.

“They obviously saw something of Kristoffer early that they liked, and have been good at updating themselves on developments.”

That knowledge that Orta is cultivating relationships with clubs behind-the-scenes in order to get a head-start on negotiations and make a good impression is something that The Athletic recently shed light on during Leeds’ signing of Junior Firpo.

It’s an indication of the kind of impressive work that the Spaniard is doing in order to get the right players into the club, and now, Hay’s update that Klaesson is closing in on a move to Elland Road is sure to have Whites fans excited.

Not just because it will be another new signing to add to Bielsa’s ranks, but also another statement that they have got a transfer chief who appears to be very good at his job – it bodes well for the rest of the window for sure.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have opened talks for this player…

Sheffield Wednesday: New side enter race for Peacock-Farrell

AFC Bournemouth have reportedly joined Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City in the race to sign Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell on loan, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

What’s the story?

Sheffield Wednesday had previously been interested in a deal to sign Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell on loan for the upcoming 2021/22 season, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

It was revealed last week that Birmingham City were also keen on reaching an agreement to sign the Northern Irish international, although it remained to be seen as to which club was leading the race to land his signature.

However, Nixon has now revealed that AFC Bournemouth have entered the race to sign Peacock-Farrell, as they look to find a suitable replacement for Asmir Begovic, who recently departed in favour of a move to Everton.

Nixon has also reported that Burnley are looking to obtain a fee of £300,000 to send the goalkeeper out on loan this term, as he is their current second-choice option between the posts.

‘A very good asset’

Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in signing a goalkeeper of Peacock-Farrell’s quality made perfect sense, with both Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson not exactly filling the club’s supporters with much confidence in recent months.

Nixon has claimed that Wildsmith could be set to depart if Sheffield Wednesday are to secure a deal to sign another goalkeeper this summer, which hints that his future lies away from Hillsborough.

The Owls conceded 61 goals in total in the 2020/21 Championship season, which certainly doesn’t make for the best of reading, and those defensive problems will have to be addressed at the earliest of opportunities this term.

Peacock-Farrell could be the ideal option to have between the posts for Darren Moore’s side this term, as he’s shown that he can perform to a high standard in the past, having kept ten clean sheets for Leeds United in the 2018/19 season, before heading to Turf Moor with Burnley.

Bournemouth will fancy their chances of striking a deal for the 24-year-old though, as they’re likely to be able to offer him regular minutes.

But Sheffield Wednesday can also offer that, and Darren Moore’s side should be pushing ahead with their interest in signing the shot-stopper on a temporary basis now that the Cherries are also rumoured to be keen on landing his signature.

Even though they’re playing their football in the third tier now, they should still be doing all they can to sign Peacock-Farrell on loan this term, and it would be somewhat of a coup for the Owls if they manage to do so this summer.

Marcelo Bielsa previously issued high-praise for Peacock-Farrell, and labelled him as a ‘very good asset’, which makes for good reading for the goalkeeper, with Bielsa establishing Leeds as a strong force in the Premier League since then.

“I think he is a very good asset for Leeds because he has been formed in the club, he is very young, he will play as a professional player for 15 years at least and if he takes advantage of the time positively, either playing or not, because when you play what you see is the limits you have, the mistakes you make.”

Sutcliffe is Player of the Month

Iain Sutcliffe, who goes to the Oval for the final Championship match against Surrey this week needing just eight more runs to reach 1,000 for the season, has been named as Leicestershire’s Bland Bankart “Player of the Month” for August

Leicestershire CCC16-Sep-2002Iain Sutcliffe, who goes to the Oval for the final Championship match against Surrey this week needing just eight more runs to reach 1,000 for the season, has been named as Leicestershire’s Bland Bankart “Player of the Month” for August. The left-handed opening batsman scored a total of 363 Championship runs during the month at an impressive average of 90.75. He hit an unbeaten 125 against Kent plus 75 in the match with Sussex and 48 and 64 against Surrey at Grace Road.He was not short of runs in the Norwich Union League either, with 98 against Warwickshire his best. But he has already improved on that in September, scoring his first National League century in the last match against the Somerset Sabres. In the Championship this season he has scored two centuries and four half centuries, and he is now looking to finish off in style by going past 1,000 first class runs for the second successive year.Sutcliffe has also revelled in the responsibility of the being vice-captain. He led the side to victory in less than five sessions in the last Championship game against Somerset at Grace Road in the absence of the injured Vince Wells. The Leicestershire captain looks likely to miss out again at Surrey because of a fractured finger. Trevor Ward is also a serious doubt with a knee injury, and Rob Cunliffe stands by to replace him.

Rogério Ceni voltou a sorrir.

Celtic interested in Yan Couto

Glasgow Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Yan Couto to Celtic Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Sky Sports, who claim that Hoops are looking to secure a season-long loan deal for the Manchester City right-back ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season.

However, the report goes on to state that Ange Postecoglou’s side are facing significant competition for the 19-year-old’s signature, with a number of clubs in Portugal also believed to have registered their interest with the Premier League champions.

Sky do not mention whether or not Pep Guardiola is willing to sanction the defender’s temporary departure this summer, although, with the Brazil U20 international having been sent on loan last season, it would seem as if there could well be a deal there to be done for Celtic.

Couto could solve Celtic’s biggest issue

With Celtic’s desire to bring in a new right-back this summer being no secret whatsoever, in addition to the sheer amount of raw potential Couto appears to possess, should Postecoglou manage to get a deal over the line for the defender this summer, he could well have found a solution to the Bhoys’ biggest issue at present.

Indeed, over his 22 LaLiga2 appearances while on loan at Girona last season, the £3.6m-rated man helped his side keep six clean sheets, as well as making an average of 0.7 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 0.5 clearances and winning 3.5 duels per game.

The 19-year-old also impressed in an attacking capacity for Michel’s side, scoring one goal, registering four assists and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 0.5 shots and making 0.7 key passes per match.

These returns saw the man dubbed “the new Dani Alves” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.69, playing a key role in Girona’s run to the LaLiga2 play-off final.

As such, the signing of Couto would not only appear to be a huge coup for Celtic, but the youngster also clearly possesses the ability to make a real difference in the club’s bid to retain their Scottish Premiership crown, in addition to curing what is likely to be Postecoglou’s most severe positional headache ahead of next season.

In other news: Celtic could sign 30-goal gem once tipped to become “world-class”, he’s a big upgrade
