South Africa’s captain, Graeme Smith, has emerged as an injury concern ahead of the third Test against England at Edgbaston on Wednesday, after picking a back injury while batting against Bangladesh A during their drawn warm-up game at Worcester last Thursday.Smith missed South Africa’s training session on Monday, and was expecting to opt out of the indoor nets on Tuesday after heavy overnight rain forced the players to cancel their pre-match middle practice. He now faces a late fitness test on the morning of the Test to determine whether he will be able to take part.”It’s been niggling me a bit and I’m obviously in a little bit of pain, so it’s just about taking precautions to make sure I’m ready for tomorrow,” said Smith. “I don’t want to do anything today that will affect tomorrow, but I’m taking treatment and improving every day, so tomorrow morning I see myself coming down early and putting in the work I need to.”Smith’s absence would be a major blow to South Africa’s hopes of sewing up their first series win in England since readmission. Dale Steyn has already been ruled out with a broken thumb. Edgbaston is a ground which harbours fond memories for Smith as well – it was here, as a 22-year-old rookie captain in 2003, that he racked up his career-best score of 277, the perfect riposte to his opposite number, Nasser Hussain, who had forgotten his name during the pre-match press conference. Hussain resigned immediately after the game as Michael Vaughan took over the reins. When asked if he was 100% sure of being fit for the Test, Smith replied: “I would like to think I am” – a statement that did not sound flushed with confidence. Should he fail his fitness test, JP Duminy is standing by to partner Neil McKenzie in a match that South Africa need only to draw to ensure a share of the series. Ashwell Prince, their form batsman of the series, would take over as captain.Nevertheless, Smith had not mislaid his sense of humour in spite of his fitness concerns. When asked how the injury had come about, he responded: “It was just something that I woke up with – maybe it’s a change of beds” – a reference to the excuse that was offered by England’s bowling coach, Ottis Gibson, when Ryan Sidebottom reported a stiff back during the Lord’s Test.South Africa 1 Graeme Smith/JP Duminy, 2 Neil McKenzie, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 Ashwell Prince, 6 AB de Villiers, 7 Mark Boucher (wk), 8 Morne Morkel, 9 Paul Harris, 10 Andre Nel, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

Clarke warns Pietersen over Ashes talk

Kevin Pietersen should focus on England’s immediate challenges before predicting success in an Ashes series that is nearly a year away, according to Australia’s vice-captain Michael Clarke

Kevin Pietersen should focus on England’s immediate challenges before predicting success in an Ashes series that is nearly a year away, according to Australia’s vice-captain Michael Clarke. After leading England to a dead-rubber victory over South Africa in his first Test in charge, Pietersen said his team had what it takes to regain the Ashes. But his comments followed a generally disappointing 2-1 series loss for England and he now has the task of turning around their one-day form in a five-game ODI series against South Africa. In his first one-day match in charge, Pietersen led England to a comprehensive loss to New Zealand at Lord’s.”I think KP needs to concentrate on beating South Africa first rather than worrying about the Ashes,” Clarke told the . “If anybody is thinking about the Ashes, in my opinion they are thinking way too far ahead. It’s going to be an interesting time in Pietersen’s career to see how he goes as captain.”Both teams have tough Test tours of India coming up in the next few months and England also have a trip to the West Indies to worry about before tackling Australia. Following Australia’s visit to India they host New Zealand and South Africa, then head to South Africa for a return Test series. They start their preparation at a training camp in Queensland this week, which will also serve as their warm-up for the upcoming three-game ODI series against Bangladesh in Darwin. They will spend the next ten months gradually building towards the Ashes but their schedule is so gruelling Clarke wants to ensure they do not look too far ahead.”The one thing I want to make clear at the camp is we have some really tough cricket coming up before England next year,” Clarke said. “We have three massive Test series in the next year.”All three – India in India, South Africa home and away and England in England – are going to be as hard as each other. It’s about adapting, because all three are completely different conditions. All our planning for the next 12 months will come from the camp.”Clarke is in charge for the one-day internationals in Darwin, which begin on August 30. Ricky Ponting will miss the series as he recovers from wrist surgery, while Matthew Hayden’s ongoing heel problem will be assessed at the camp.

West Ham receive Jesse Lingard boost

West Ham have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Jesse Lingard back to the London Stadium this month…

What’s the word?

According to The Daily Express, Manchester United have reportedly dropped their asking price for the 28-year-old to just £20m, which could see David Moyes now launch a move.

The Hammers have never given up hope of signing Lingard on a permanent deal and their hopes have been heightened this week amid this exciting update.

Back in July, it was thought that the club would be unwilling to pay as much as United’s initial £30m valuation, as per The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas, so this latest development hands Moyes a massive boost ahead of Deadline Day on August 31st.

Time to strike!

The Irons have made it no secret of their desire to bring Lingard back to east London this season, though time is running out.

After the final game of the 2020/21 season, Moyes revealed his intentions to reporters. He said, via the Evening Standard: “I hope Jesse’s here, we’d like to keep him, he’s done an exceptional job for us but there’s no guarantees, he’s not our player.”

Whilst his assistant manager Stuart Pearce added fuel to the fire earlier this week by reiterating their desire to sign the 28-year-old.

“We would like him to come and join us. That has been an open secret. He was wonderful last year,” he revealed to talkSPORT. “The ball is in Manchester United’s court. He is contracted to them. We would like him with us, there is no doubt about that. He’s a special lad and was very good around the players – the players really like him.”

Lingard joined on a short-term loan back in January and soon became an instant hit at the London Stadium.

The Red Devils outcast, who did not feature at all against Leeds United on the opening day, provided nine goals and five assists in just 16 appearances, averaging a direct contribution every 109 minutes, via Transfermarkt.

He ended the year as Moyes’ second-highest rated player as per WhoScored figures. Undoubtedly, he had a crucial role in the Irons qualifying for the Europa League group stages.

The £19.8m-rated dynamo’s impact was also hailed as “absolutely phenomenal” by talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham in April.

Now that his asking price has dropped to a more affordable value, Moyes and co must make their move for the 29-time England international, who earns a reported £75k-per-week at Old Trafford.

West Ham have not had a better chance to seal Lingard than now.

Leeds United eyeing Dundee United’s Kerr Smith

Leeds United are monitoring Dundee United starlet Kerr Smith amid a potential deadline day beating transfer move.

What’s the story?

While Marcelo Bielsa’s side have had a fairly quiet summer transfer window thus far in terms of first-team recruitment, they have made some notable signings when it comes to academy level, bringing in the likes of Amari Miller and Kristoffer Klaesson in particular.

Now, The Scottish Sun claim that the Whites have got their eye on 16-year-old centre-back Smith, and are one of several clubs interested in luring the teenager south of the border.

The report adds that Dundee are set to cash in one of their prized assets before the transfer window closes.

Fans will love it

Speaking about him earlier this year, Dundee United’s academy chief Andy Goldie said: “Kerr’s not the only one who had interest from down south, he rightly grabbed the headlines, but there were other ones like Lewis.

“They’ve both made the transition from central midfielder to centre-back and that’s coincided with a sharp acceleration in their development and, therefore, in the interest they were gathering with some of the biggest clubs across Europe.”

Despite his age, Smith has already made his debut in the Scottish Premiership for Dundee United, and that’s a real testament to his ability and attitude as well – something his teammate was quick to point out.

Speaking in April, fellow defender Mark Connolly said: “Kerr, who played beside me, was fantastic. He’s 16 years of age and it’s incredible.”

The 6 foot starlet ties right into the kind of impressive youth signings Leeds have made over the last couple of seasons. Fans will surely be buzzing with the kind of fine work the club are doing in securing a very bright future at Elland Road.

If Smith can be added to the likes of Miller and Klaesson this summer, and the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville, among others, over the previous one, then it will be a real masterclass from Victor Orta in building a top-rate academy.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star proved why Bielsa must sell him…

New South Wales excited by young talent

The absence of key players could herald a new era for New South Wales, with promising young talent banked upon to continue the success from last year

The absence of key players could herald a new era for New South Wales, who will bank upon young talent to continue the success from the 2007-08 season, when they won the Pura Cup. Simon Katich, the team captain, feels the line-up is settled even without him, Brad Haddin and Doug Bollinger, all of whom will be touring India with the national side in October-November.”We expect Mark Cameron and Nathan Bracken to open the attack and, with Doug Bollinger away, someone else will try to take that other bowling opportunity,” Katich told the . “Our attack will be fine, as will our batting.”Last year Phil Hughes did extremely well, Peter Forrest had a good season, and guys like Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith and Moises Henriques got opportunities. Greg Mail and Ed Cowan will also push for spots. There’s going to be good rivalry and batsmen who make runs early will be in the best position.”Katich said the winning experience in last year’s Pura Cup, now the Sheffield Shield, will help the up-and-coming players. “They’ve got some experience under their belts, have spent time in the squad, and I think it will be time for them to push on and show what they can do,” he said. “There’s no doubt they’ve got the ability, it’s just about having that belief that they can do it at the next level.”David Gilbert, the Cricket New South Wales chief executive, was thrilled with the advent of younger players, especially Hughes and Forrest, both of whom are in India with the Australia A squad. “It’s probably one of our most exciting eras of young guys coming through since the 1980s, when the Waugh brothers [Steve and Mark] and Mark Taylor emerged,” Gilbert said. “Phil Hughes is proof of that. At this time last year, he was still finishing school commitments – and here he is on an Australia A trip.”Hughes earned his place in the Australia A side after only nine first-class games. He got a rookie deal with New South Wales last year after he scored 387 runs at 96.75 for Australia Under-19s in five matches against Pakistan Under-19s and followed it up with a good showing in the Emerging Players Tournament. In seven first-class matches for New South Wales last season, Hughes scored 559 runs at 62.11 and, at 19, became the youngest centurion in a Sheffield Shield final.”The [Australia A] selection was also good news for Peter Forrest,” Gilbert said. “He did good things for about two years and fell away a bit late last season. But at the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane he’s done very well lately. So I guess his selection was based on what he achieved over the winter up there. He’s a very determined bloke.”We’re probably not going to see much of Simon Katich and Doug Bollinger this year and that’s where it will be interesting to see how the likes of Hughes, Forrest, Steven Smith, Usman Khawaja, Moises Henriques and others go. With the 2009 Ashes tour on the horizon the performances of many of these players will be closely monitored by the national selectors.”

O Inter é um time grande.

Everton continuing their right-back search

Everton’s transfer deadline day has been in tune with the rest of their window – quiet and not a lot going on.

Rafa Benitez has spent just £1.7m in the market so far but the Toffees are closing in on a few more signings before the 11pm deadline.

What’s the word?

While Everton undergo negotiations with Porto for a swap deal involving James Rodriguez and Luis Dias, Benitez and Marcel Brands are still awaiting phone calls elsewhere.

That’s because they’re aiming to bring in a striker and a right-back before the deadline. The Toffees are notably in the market for Salomon Rondon, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles could still join despite Arsenal rejecting their offer for the versatile youngster on Monday.

However, providing the latest on what’s happening at Goodison Park today, Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor said on their deadline day coverage:

“What I have been told is that it could be a late one here. Everton also want to bring in a right-back. We’re awaiting developments on who might come in as competition for Seamus Coleman. It’s very important that Everton get a striker in too; Salomon Rondon is the option Everton are looking at.

“It’s our understanding that they’re still working on getting Rondon in. We’re expecting a late one here at Everton.”

Exciting times

With that update from O’Connor in mind, it looks as though Everton supporters can begin to get excited as the transfer window comes to a close.

It’s not been the best market for the Toffees, but if they are able to secure back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and bolster their options at right-back, it can be considered a good window.

Although a more notable forward would presumably be preferable, it’s hard to complain with any signing on deadline day. After all, Benitez could be on the verge of signing two Premier League proven players here.

Rondon has made 140 appearances in the English top-flight, bagging 35 goals in the process. Crucially, he also knows Benitez’s methods after spending time with the Spanish manager at Newcastle.

Maitland-Niles, meanwhile, has been a vibrant prospect after coming through the academy ranks of Arsenal. He is an FA Cup winner and showed during his time on loan at West Brom last season that he can perform regularly in the Premier League.

Benitez’s signings, specifically Demarai Gray with his two goals, have hit the ground running, so fans should back these potential acquisitions to do the same. This is an exciting time for all involved at the club.

AND in other news, Paul Joyce drops intriguing Everton transfer update, it’s now or never for Brands…
