Caglar Soyuncu was poor throughout August

The new Premier League campaign is already three games old and Leicester City have made a solid, if not spectacular, start.

A tally of six points from a possible nine is a respectable total for Brendan Rodgers’ charges, although their performances at times have left a lot to be desired.

Victories over Manchester City in the Community Shield and Wolves in their top-flight curtain-raiser were followed by a humiliating 4-1 defeat by West Ham United.

Despite the Foxes bouncing back well via a narrow win over newly-promoted Norwich City, several members of Rodgers’ first-team squad need to step their game up following the international break.

One of those who has significantly underperformed for the Midlands outfit is Caglar Soyuncu.

The Turkey international gifted the Hammers possession leading directly to one of their goals before hauling Pierre Lees-Melou down in the 18-yard box to gift Norwich a penalty at Carrow Road.

As per SofaScore, the 25-year-old received an average match rating of just 6.50 out of 10 for his three Premier League appearances, the 14th lowest amongst his teammates.

And when looking at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. Soyuncu has lost possession a whopping 39 times in just 270 minutes of action, won just 50% of his duels and made one error leading directly to a goal.

The former Freiburg defender was also underwhelming when in possession, producing only 0.7 dribbles per game and pulling off only 32% of his attempted long passes.

With Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans out injured and Jannik Vestergaard settling into his new surroundings, Soyuncu was the senior centre-back for Rodgers throughout August.

However, his sub-par performances let the Northern Irish tactician down and both will be expected an upturn in form when the league season resumes next weekend.

– Depende do treinador (virar lateral).

Marc Guehi shines for England U21s

Crystal Palace have begun their new era under Patrick Vieira in steady fashion, collecting two points from a possible nine in the Premier League, but some of their star performers have been excelling while on international duty.

Summer signing Marc Guehi was one of those who caught the eye while on duty for his nation, helping the England Under-21s to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Kosovo in their 2023 Euro U21 qualifier.

New manager Lee Carsley kickstarted his reign in impressive fashion as Rhian Brewster got his first England Under-21 goal after opening the scoring from the penalty spot.

Manchester City’s Cole Palmer then scored on his debut via a delightful solo goal, but Guehi, the Three Lions’ rock at the heart of defence also played a pivotal part in their success.

As per SofaScore, Guehi received a match rating of 7.2 out of 10 after marshalling the backline towards a much-deserved clean sheet at Stadium MK.

The Palace centre-back captained his country on the night and put in a dominant performance, winning all three of his aerial duels while achieving an incredible passing accuracy of 92%.

Not all of his passes were simple either, as the former Chelsea academy graduate found a teammate with four of his six attempted long balls. On top of that, Guehi also made five clearances, blocked two shots and had 117 touches.

His magnificent performance helped England’s U21s to extend their unbeaten run in European qualifiers to almost 10 years, with their last defeat a 2-1 loss to Belgium in November 2011. This latest victory stretched their unbeaten run to 46 games.

Vieira will be desperate for his new recruit to reproduce this sort of form at Selhurst Park when domestic football resumes.

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, has warned of a divide in the cricketing world if countries decide not to tour the subcontinent because of security concerns in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.”If certain countries play separately with two sets of rules it will be a dangerous situation,” Butt told the . “It’s a mutual thing. If they don’t come [to the subcontinent], we won’t go [there]. You cannot have separate pockets with England only playing Australia.”We have to agree something. It has to be with all Test countries. You can’t have four Test countries playing each other and the other four playing separately as well.”England cut short their tour of India after five ODIs following the terrorist strikes and returned home. It is uncertain whether they will return for the two-Test series scheduled to begin on December 11 in Ahmedabad. The atrocities in Mumbai also forced the postponement of the inaugural Champions Twenty20 League, which was scheduled from December 3.Pakistan have also suffered from teams putting off tours to the country citing security concerns. Australia postponed their tour earlier this year and the Champions Trophy was also shifted from September 2008 to October 2009. Pakistan have not played a Test since December 2007 and there are security-related doubts over the upcoming home series against India in January.

Saints writer worried about Walker-Peters

Glen de la Clour has offered his thoughts on Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters’ current situation.

What’s the talk?

Southampton writer Glen de la Clour has expressed his concern at the lack of game time for right-back Kyle Walker-Peters in the Premier League this season.

He told the Total Saints podcast, via This is Futbol:

“I think Kyle Walker-Peters is ridiculously unlucky not to be playing. I do find it a bit of a worry. I mean, I heard a story not so long ago that Everton were sniffing around him on the last day of the transfer window.

“And if I was him, I’d be really fed up. And it’s just a case of how patient he is likely to be. Obviously, you can’t really do anything into January, if you’re really fed up.

“But yeah, it’s an interesting one, because he has basically been left out having done absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever.”

Fans would be livid

Ralph Hasenhuttl needs to handle this situation with care to avoid making a major blunder ahead of the January transfer window. As de la Clour explained, Walker-Peters could end up becoming restless and potentially keen to leave the club if he continues to be a substitute in the Premier League behind Tino Livramento and that could cause issues ahead of the market opening up again in a few months, which would leave fans livid.

Livramento joined the club from Chelsea in the summer and the teenager has started all four Premier League matches at right-back. He has averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.69, making 3.3 tackles and interceptions along with one key pass per game.

Walker-Peters, meanwhile, has started one league match and it came as a left-back in place of Romain Perraud, which is a role he was also deployed in for the League Cup win against Newport County. Last season, however, the ex-Spurs defender averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.84 in 30 Premier League starts, making 4.1 tackles and interceptions along with 0.5 key passes per game.

Hasenhuttl hailed Walker-Peters’ intense style of play upon his arrival at the club last year.

The Austrian said: “He is a very good fit for our style. He is a young, intelligent player, and he is very good on the ball, with good quickness and an ability to play this intense style that we like.

“I am very pleased we have been able to bring him back as our player, as this is a position that we have been looking to improve in and Kyle does this for us. I think he can develop his game even more here too.”

This shows that Walker-Peter plays the way Hasenhuttl wants his right-back to play and the statistics suggest that he has, in the past, performed to a higher standard in the Premier League than Livramento. Therefore, he could be within his rights to be frustrated at a lack of action.

The 24-year-old could then get itchy feet and consider a move, which would leave fans furious as he has proven himself to be a solid operator at this level. He has shown his quality in the top-flight and fans will want to see Hasenhuttl share the game time between the pair in the coming months to ensure that everyone is happy with the situation.

Vettori for more high-tech review system

The review system has elicited concerns from both New Zealand and West Indies, particularly with regards to the limited availability of television technology to the third umpire

The review system trialled in the recently concluded Test series between New Zealand and West Indies has drawn concern from both teams, particularly with regard to the limited availability of television technology to the third umpire.Brendon McCullum’s controversial dismissal on the final day of the second Test in Napier raised doubts over the system’s ability to produce accurate decisions. McCullum was adjudged caught behind by umpire Rudi Koertzen and the decision, when referred, was upheld by third umpire Mark Benson. However, Benson’s review of the decision was, under the rule, limited to normal television coverage and not the advanced “hot spot” technology, which indicated no contact between bat and ball. The decision was crucial as New Zealand, batting aggressively in pursuit of 312, called off their chase with 92 required off nine overs.Daniel Vettori said all available technology should be used in the referral process, without which it would not meet its intended purpose. “It was clear he didn’t hit it,” he said of McCullum’s dismissal. “If you’re going upstairs you should give umpires as much technology as they can have.”Hot Spot seems to be the best one I’ve seen in my time. You couple that with the snicko and the naked eye and you’d think you’d get the decisions right 100% of the time.”John Dyson, the West Indies coach, agreed. “I think if the feeling about technology like snicko is very good, that should be another tool given to the umpires to make decisions. Sometimes the eyes and the cameras don’t pick up everything.” There were a total of 19 reviews in the Test series, with seven used on the final day in Napier.Vettori, who had earlier called for referrals to be used only for ‘obvious calls’, also felt the three unsuccessful challenges allowed for each team gave captains an opportunity to use the system quite liberally for marginal decisions, as he did when he appealed for a leg-before decision against Chris Gayle early in his innings of 197.”We took a chance with Chris because it was such an important wicket. I don’t think that’s why the referral system was brought in. If we’re looking to rid the game of the obvious wrong decisions then it has to be brought back to one (challenge) in my opinion. If we get caught up in the 50-50s (decisions), that takes the power out of the umpires’ hands. Everyone involved in the game still wants that human element.”Dyson preferred two challenges. “With three there’s a bit of a feeling there; ‘Oh well, we’ll give it a go because we’ve got three’.”

Confira:

Celtic were ’desperate’ to sign Ko Itakura

Celtic were ‘desperate’ to sign Manchester City defender Ko Itakura this summer, according to Schalke 04 sporting director Rouven Schroeder.

The Lowdown: Celtic’s defensive additions

The Hoops were extremely busy over the summer in the transfer market and managed to bring in 12 players. Four of those were centre-backs in Carl Starfelt, Camron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales and Osaze Urhoghide.

They were also seemingly keen on Itakura, who shares the same agency as Mikey Johnston, but the Japanese defender moved to Germany instead.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-13/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Schroeder’s comments

Schalke secured Itakura’s services on loan and have the option to make a move permanent next summer for £3.4m.

Their sporting director Schroeder was talking to the media about the 6 foot 1 defender, as relayed by The Scottish Sun, and he said that the Hoops were ‘desperate’ to land the Japan international, revealing:

“It took a lot of patience to sign him from Manchester City.

“For example, Celtic had tracked him for a year and were desperate to sign him, but we managed to beat them to it.”

The Verdict: Ange wants more

Celtic may have missed a trick by missing out on Itakura, who appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high £3.15m Transfermarkt valuation.

Although Ange Postecoglou added four centre-backs to his ranks, it is believed that he wants more options in that department – not surprising given the defensive horror show against Real Betis last week.

That could have been Itakura, described as ‘incredibly fast’, if they had gotten their way, but the Hoops will now need to look elsewhere for centre-back reinforcements ahead of the winter transfer window.
