The ICC has announced a new set of rules for authorised and unauthorised cricket that give its member boards the power to decide on granting recognition for competitions that take place on their home soil. However the status of the Indian Cricket League, which was started in September 2007, and the players associated with it will be decided after a meeting between the ICC, BCCI and ICL, likely to be on February 21.The BCCI had initially adopted a hard-line approach against the ICL, barring Indian cricketers associated with the unofficial league from accessing even their local college grounds. It also used its significant influence within the ICC to ensure other national boards imposed similar bans on ICL cricketers and officials.Debate over the ICL gathered pace last week after the Pakistan Cricket Board received a legal notice against a domestic ban it had imposed on players associated with the private league. The ICL had asked for recognition last year under an ICC rule that allowed matches of an “exhibition/testimonial” nature to be granted approval directly by the world body. The ICC had then directed the BCCI to conduct discussions with the Indian board, since it considered the matter a domestic issue. However, there was no headway in the talks between the BCCI and ICL but a subsequent meeting between the ICC and the ICL in December indicated a compromise was on the cards. The status of unofficial tournaments that are held outside the territory of member boards will be determined by the ICC. The rules, which will come into effect from June 2009, were drafted by a five-man panel consisting of consisting of the former Cricket South Africa president Norman Arendse, the ECB chairman Giles Clarke, the BCCI president Shashank Manohar, the BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi and the ICC’s head of legal David Becker.

A situação gera preocupação no volante.

– O tempo passa rápido e a rodada também. A gente vê conversando bastante no dia a dia, acredito que vamos alcançar nossos objetivos na temporada. E tirar o time mais rápido possível dessa situação.

The plan is simple, the results impressive

Straight-jacketing a bowler to stick to a pre-determined plan might at the outset seem like killing the creativity of a bowler but Mahendra Singh Dhoni sees it just as sticking to a method and being disciplined

In early 2008, RP Singh spoke of Mahendra SinghDhoni’s captaincy. “Sometimes in ODIs, since Dhoni is behind the wicket, you don’t get to communicate that often. The nature of the format means you don’t change your plans too much. There are generally just two spells to be bowled,” he had said. “So under Dhoni, you execute what you have already decided off the field and when you change, he would come running toyou and discuss.”Nearly a year later, Dhoni has been running to Ishant Sharma during match situations almost pleading with his bowler to bowl to a plan and to set fields, and to experiment only within those parameters. This is the mantra Dhoni has been harping on since he became captain.Strait-jacketing a bowler within a pre-determined plan might seem like killing his creativity but Dhoni sees it just as sticking to a method and being disciplined. According to him, the plan is drawn up before a game in conjunction with the bowler andthus allows for the creativity to flourish as a part of the system; he is simply against making an impromptu decision on the fly. “It’s better to have a plan – may be a bad plan – in mind than be confused,” Dhoni said. “When you are the top of the bowling mark, you need to have one clear thought of where to bowl.”If you are going to bowl a slower one, then you need a deep midwicket, not a third man,” Dhoni said after the second ODI. He wanted better clarity of thought from Ishant, who took the mostwickets but was expensive in the Powerplay in that game.In the absence of Harbhajan Singh, Dhoni has relied on his fast bowlers to take wickets. And in the era of the batting Powerplays, especially on flat tracks and without your specialist spinner, the role of a fast bowler becomes critical.Ishant knows what he has to do and where he is going wrong. “I get to bowl three or four overs at the start and then I have to come again and bowl in the Powerplay,” he said today. “You just have to stick to your fields. I don’t have to do too many experiments.”Ishant has seven wickets at an average 26.14, second to the left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, butit has come at an economy rate of 6.10. That is the highest for an Indian bowler to have bowled over seven overs in the series.Ishant, who likes to hit the deck and derive pace off the track, has struggled a bit on the sluggish pitches. “Bowling has been difficult as the ball does not come on. It’s not a big thing,” he said. “The Indian wickets are similar and I am learning to bowl in all conditions. Zaheer [Khan] advises us in the nets and even during matches. When I am struggling or not bowling well in the game, he comes and tells me what to do.”When you are winning everything, the team spirit does tend to be exaggerated. But there are some pleasant signs that have been a constant feature in the series. Zaheer has constantly talked with Ishant in the nets and during the games. Venkatesh Prasad, India’s bowling coach, has been intensively working with all the bowlers in the practice sessions. During practice Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag have been suggesting to the bowlers on where they are going wrong and what lines to bowl.In the middle, the captain has led by example. Dhoni got out in the 90s in the last game, going for the big shot and he explained it thus: “There was a ball change in the 34th over and we had to take the second Powerplay as well. So I thought one of the batsmen had to quickly get his hundred and capitalise in the Powerplay.” Even cynics will have to admit that that there is at least clarity of thought and a sense of purpose in the ranks. Every one appears to know what their role in the team is. Not for nothing are India ranked No. 2 in the official ICC rankings. The doubters will say that the hard job is sustain over a period of time – year after year, month after month, day after day, spell after spell, ball after ball. India is looking at it in the other way – Do it ball after ball and the rest will follow. An interesting 2009 lies ahead of us.

DCL and Coleman in Everton training

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing as some training footage emerged of both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Seamus Coleman.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Goodison Park faithful, both players are back in individual training as they look to try and recover as quickly as possible from their respective injuries.

Calvert-Lewin has not played since August having scored three goals in his first three games this season, and the Merseyside club have since lost 3-0 away at Aston Villa and been knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by EFL Championship team Queens Park Rangers (Transfermarkt).

Being the captain, Rafa Benitez’s side have also missed Coleman’s leadership off of the pitch as well as on it, and so it is a big relief to see them both back in training.

A whole set of unknowns

India may have got perfect facilities at the academy to train but it can never replicate the actual venue and the actual match timings

It’s the afternoon before the first match of the tour and the drop-in pitch is yet to be installed. Unaware that a potentially deciding factor in the match has not made its appearance at the AMI Stadium, India and New Zealand practice at the High Performance Academy, half an hour away from the venue for Wednesday’s Twenty20, which is expected to be a rare sell-out.Daniel Vettori is about to address the pre-match press conference in the team hotel, followed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the academy. The big-screen operators are tuning their equipment at the stadium. But they don’t know what entry music each player will want. The DJ will need to be prepared with a wide array of music. The players don’t know how the pitch will behave, and they will have to be prepared for any eventuality.Until less than 24 hours before the start of the game India had not visited the venue. They may have got perfect facilities to train at the academy – two beautiful grounds, and faultless nets both outdoors and indoors – but it can never replicate the actual venue and the actual match timings. When they did go to the AMI Stadium at 8pm, mainly to get used to the wind and the cold, having trained till then only during the mornings or afternoons, India didn’t hit the ground running. In the first round of their first fielding drill, it showed they needed more warming up. The ball seemed to sting in temperatures of around 10 degrees celsius. They will need to come properly warmed up for the game on Wednesday. What they would have also noticed is the stadium’s shape cannot be geometrically categorised, so they will need to work out their angles. The flood lights are low, the boundaries are short, the outfield is not even all around and since some stands are under construction, the vacant spaces let the wind in.”The temperature has been up and down, and the wind is pretty cold,” Dhoni said, before visiting the stadium. “A lot depends on the conditions tomorrow. If it is cloudy and there is a bit of rain, it will help the seamers. But if there is too much rain, the ball will become soggy and the batsmen will benefit. It will be interesting, at the end of the day it will depend on how the weather pans out, but overall, it has been cold so far.” Not knowing what to expect, India will decide their XI only on the day of the game.Another unknown factor is the format itself. India may be the world champions at Twenty20, but no team has worked out how exactly to go about the game. “It took 10 to 20 years for someone to master the formula in ODIs,” Ross Taylor said yesterday. “There are different strategies, and no right way to play.” New Zealand, though, have the most experience of the miniature forms of the game – Cricket Max originated here.In a way, both teams would think Twenty20s are the best way to start the tour. India have no tour games, and if they lose these matches before familiarising themselves with the conditions, it won’t affect them as much as defeat in the ODI series. It’s not often that India start as favourites outside the subcontinent, but New Zealand believe that is the case this time. They’ll also believe their best chance of causing an upset is early in the series, and in the shortest format of the game. The anticipation is slowly building. India have been practising here for the last four days – sometimes for four-and-a-half hours, for what is a three-hour-long match. New Zealand have been good hosts: they have given India superb practice facilities, they have called them the best team in the world, and are believed to have extended the ultimate hospitality – inviting Indian Test specialists to play in their domestic games. But the time for niceties is over now. It’s time to – as is the norm before rugby games here – let the horses out onto the AMI Stadium.

Cross: January signings unlikely for Leeds

Journalist Beren Cross has insisted that it is “highly unlikely” that Leeds United will enter the transfer market in January.

The Lowdown: Busy summer for Leeds

The Whites were busy over the summer transfer window, with deals for four players confirmed after seeing 12 depart the club, including Ezgjan Alioski, Pablo Hernandez, Helder Costa and Kiko Casilla.

Brought in to Elland Road were goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson, Junior Firpo from Barcelona and Daniel James from Manchester United, while Jack Harrison’s loan move from Manchester City was made permanent.

With the January transfer window open in three months’ time, talk of Leeds’ business in the mid-season window has already begun after only six games, with Marcelo Bielsa’s men still seeking a first Premier League win of the campaign.

The Lowdown: Cross provides update

Writing in a Q&A for Leeds Live, Cross has shared his view on the likelihood of any incomings in the January transfer window, hinting that the Elland Road faithful shouldn’t hold their breath.

He said: “The problem with January business is you’re always fighting an uphill battle to make it work under Bielsa.

“Assuming you sign the player in mid to late January. They need six weeks with the under-23s before they’re ready physically and tactically for Bielsa. You’re looking at the final six weeks of a season for the player to have an impact.

“If there was some form of injury crisis, then I am sure the club would act, but it seems highly unlikely if the squad is largely available to Bielsa through the second half of the season.”

The Verdict: New signings may be needed

Whilst Cross’ comments may dampen the prospects of any potential business in the January window, Leeds may be forced to enter the market due to their poor start to the season and the possibility of shortages in key positions.

Diego Llorente and Robin Koch are currently out injured, with Luke Ayling and Adam Forshaw also among those on the treatment table, and Patrick Bamford has struggled in front of goal this season, scoring only once in six Premier League fixtures.

They currently sit in the relegation zone, and if one of their key players were to pick up a lengthy injury, Bielsa may have little option but to seek some new additions in January when he has the opportunity to add to his squad.

In other news, Joe Urquhart has revealed that this key Leeds player should play in this weekend’s game. Find out more here.
