Vettori joins 300-wicket club

Daniel Vettori prised out the two wickets he needed to cross 300 Test victims on the first day of the second Test at the SSC. He reached the landmark in his 94th Test when, in his 16th over, Kumar Sangakkara attempted a slog-sweep and was caught at deep midwicket by Jacob Oram. Vettori now sits eighth on the list of players to have taken 300 wickets and scored 3000 runs.At the end of the day’s play he allowed himself the satisfaction of soaking it all in. “For a spin bowler from New Zealand, it’s not something a lot of people would expect to happen,” he said. “To play for that amount of time and to do so well is very special. It’s difficult to be a frontline spinner in New Zealand, so to have longevity and to revel in some conditions means that I’ve had a pretty good career. I’d like to think I’ve stayed pretty constant.”Vettori was more pleased to have joined an elite group of allrounders. “To be up there with the four allrounders of the eighties is special,” he said. “It’s been an exclusive group and to think that you’re one of only eight in that list is something I cherish.”It didn’t take long for Vettori, who on Tuesday admitted he was itching to cross the landmark. He brought himself on in the 11th over, after New Zealand’s new-ball pair bowled well but without luck, and struck with his second delivery. He tossed one up with that customary high-arm trajectory, got the ball to gently drift in towards Tharanga Paranavitana, and Ross Taylor at slip did the rest. The landmark came when Vettori dismissed Sangakkara two balls after the Sri Lankan captain reached his half-century. Vettori and Sangakkara had battled all session and Sangakkara seemed to have finally stamped his authority with a couple of smashes over mid-on. But while attempting another he picked out to the sweeper. There was no massive celebration from Vettori as his team-mates mobbed him. He received warm applause from the smidgen of a crowd, the loudest cheer coming from two small groups of New Zealand fans. Vettori smiled and raised his arms in celebration, then dropped his head as he slowly walked towards his team-mates.New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan led the tributes for Vettori’s achievement. “This is a huge honour for Dan – he can be rightfully proud of his record as a preeminent Test cricketer,” Vaughan said. “To have achieved to the standard of players of the calibre of [Shaun] Pollock, [Ian] Botham and [Imran] Khan, for example, speaks volumes for Dan’s ability with both ball and bat.”To claim 300 Test wickets is an achievement for any bowler but it is especially noteworthy for Vettori given the workload he’s had to shoulder since making his debut against England in 1996-97. Vettori played his first Test at 18, the youngest to represent New Zealand, and has lugged the weight of his side almost since. He has rarely had support at the other end, be it from the fast bowlers ahead of him or from a quality support spinner. Of his 94 Tests, 45 have been at home often on unfriendly surfaces designed to hamper the longevity of spinners. Along the way he has fought back from serious stress-fractures that could have laid low less strong-willed bowlers.Today Vettori bowled as he has for much of his career, sticking to the routine that made him New Zealand’s second most prolific bowler, and well past the tally of the only other spinner from his country to take 100 Test wickets, John Bracewell. To the left-handed batsman he drifted the ball in and tried to get the slips involved as much as possible. To the right handed Tillakaratne Dilshan, habitually one to feast on spin, Vettori pushed the ball in quicker, at times operating on a line more prone to nagging stump-to-stump medium-pacers. He varied his flight to Mahela Jayawardene, clearing his throat when a straighter one hit the batsman as he went back. The wicket of Sangakkara was reward for perseverance in the face of adversity, a microcosm of Vettori’s career.

Rangers manager search continues

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left raging over a post from the club’s social media channels.

As per the club’s official Twitter feed, David McCallum, Brian Gilmour, Jermain Defoe and Colin Stewart will now all lead their first team while the recruitment process for a new manager continues.

It was reported that further talks will be held with three candidates in particular, two unnamed and the other being Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who many Gers fans want to see getting the job.

However, with the Scottish League Cup semi-final against Hibernian set to take place on Sunday, it is worrying that it does not seem as if the Light Blues have settled on a new coach yet. The process needs to be accelerated quickly in order for them to be best prepared for what is a crucial game in their season.

Nottingham Forest fans slam Bong v Reading

Many Nottingham Forest fans have been slamming the performance of Gaetan Bong in their 1-1 draw at Reading on Saturday.

Philip Zinckernagel gave the away side a very early lead, but Steve Cooper’s men were eventually pegged back midway through the second half by Scott Dann.

Bong came on around the half-hour mark to replace the injured Max Lowe at left-back, and several Forest supporters were left wishing that he did not after the performance that he put in.

The former Brighton defender lost out on four of his duels and also failed to record a single successful dribble, blocked shot or interception, while failing to make a key pass or cross (SofaScore).

Bong also lost possession of the ball on 13 occasions, the joint-third most out of any Forest player despite not starting the match (SofaScore).

Madan ton sets up All Air India final

Chandan Madan’s century made sure All India Blue were rarely in trouble•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Chandan Madan hit an attractive hundred and Mohammad Kaif chipped in with a serene fifty to power Air India Blue to the final against Air India Red in the BCCI Corporate Trophy.Tata Sports Club bowling wasn’t discipline enough to defend 267, which was later readjusted to 246 due to a floodlight failure, against a decent batting line-up on a flat track. Their batting too didn’t click initially and it took a breezy fifty from Ajit Agarkar and a quick cameo from Sufiyan Sheikh to push them to a competitive score but it didn’t prove enough in the end as Madan led the way with an assured knock. He has just played four List A games so far and there is nothing flattering about the average of 11 and a strike rate of 52.38 but on Sunday, he showcased his potential with a measured innings. He was very strong square on the off side against the seamers, repeatedly threading the field with his punchy square-drives. The highlight of them was a check-drive through covers off Usman Maulvi. And when Ramesh Powar bowled a beauty – a floater that went straight to beat Madan’s opening partner Manvinder Bisla in flight and got him stumped – one wondered how Madan would tackle the spinners. The pitch didn’t offer much turn and Madan took full toll. He showed good temperament and skill in handling Powar and the left-arm spinners Gaurav Jhatar and Nishit Shetty. He used his feet well, not only charging down the track to play big shots – there was a big six over long-on off Powar and couple of lofted hits to the straight boundary – but also, to smother the turn and collect singles and twos.He found solid company in Kaif, who guided his younger partner with a composed knock. He knew he didn’t have to do take any undue risks and went about calmly tucking the ball into gaps. The best shot of his stay was a gorgeous check-drive against the turn through extra cover off Powar and he hurried the end with few feisty hits against Agarkar and Mota. He pulled Agarkar twice, the second of those bringing up his fifty, and walked across the sticks to flick Mota to deep-backward square leg boundary. Madan and Kaif fell within seven balls to cause some artificial excitement towards the end but it only delayed the inevitable. The real hard work was done on the field by Air India Blue’s disciplined bowling. RP Singh and Pankaj Singh applied the squeeze in their first spell and the spinners maintained the pressure initially but the bowling fell away in the end to let Tata Sports reach a handy total. It took a whirlwind innings from their captain Agarkar to push them over 250. The seamers tried a few short-pitched deliveries at him which were pulled away for boundaries. Towards the end, he used the long handle to lift full deliveries from the medium-pacer Sachin Rana to the long-on boundary, and once over it, before he pulled Harbhajan Singh over deep midwicket to bring up his fifty. Sufiyan Sheikh took over after Agarkar’s exit with a lovely little cameo where he played a series of paddle-scoops against the seamers. The Air India bowling too fell away in the end; RP was either on a length or too short and the spinners too ended up bowling a tad short. It wasn’t so at the start when RP and Pankaj troubled the batsmen with their movement. RP got the ball to swing and Pankaj got the ball to seam a bit. It was nothing alarming but it was enough to cause trouble. RP set up Sahil Kukreja with a series of inswingers before he caught the edge with one that went away. Pankaj moved one enough to catch the outer edge of Manoj Joglekar and it took a purposeful innings from Ishank Jaggi and a patient hand from Nishant Shetty to turn the innings around.Jaggi oozed intent, unfurling several on-the-up drives against the seamers. He dealt in singles against the spinners before swinging Harbhajan over long-off to bring up his fifty. However, he fell soon, stumped off the left-arm spinner Sonu Sharma. If Jaggi oozed intent, Shetty showcased solidity. It was a risk-free innings from him, dealing mainly in nudges and dabs; such was his discipline that only when the ball was either overpitched or short, he played an aggressive shot. Agarkar later provided the firepower but on a placid track, without a potent attack, 267 didn’t prove enough.

Rangers: Gio must unleash Fashion Sakala

Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst will be unveiled at Ibrox for the first time on Thursday as he prepares for his first match in charge of the club.

The Gers are set to face Sparta Prague in their fifth group stage game in the Europa League. They lost 1-0 to them in the reverse fixture and a win would send them up into second place in the group.

Forget Roofe

FFC published an article explaining why Alfredo Morelos should be axed from the XI for this game. This would leave the number nine position vacant, with Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala competing to be named in the team from the start.

Van Bronckhorst should forget about the former Leeds United man, who is a minor injury doubt, for now and unleash Sakala against the Czech outfit tonight. He came off the bench against Hibernian and should now be given the chance to show what he can do from the start.

The 24-year-old is coming off the back of a sensational international break where he scored four goals in two games for Zambia. He has now scored seven times in his last six appearances for club and country, having also bagged a hat-trick for Rangers against Motherwell at the end of October.

This shows that the £8.3k-per-week gem has the ability to be a match-winner for van Bronckhorst as he has been consistently finding the back of the net of late. Goals win games and Sakala could potentially win the match for Rangers if he starts against Sparta, given his recent record.

Ex-Gers boss Steven Gerrard once hailed the forward as an ‘incredible’ person and praised his quality in training for the club. He said:

“He’s an incredible human being. The way he has come into the club, his smile and demeanour, his attitude and energy, has lifted the whole place. The signs are he is really starting to find his feet here at Rangers. He is a really exciting one for everyone to watch moving forward.

“There will be plenty of opportunities for Fashion, not just in Europe but domestically as well. We are really starting to see his strengths, his consistency from a training point of view.”

These comments suggest that he has the attitude and mentality to thrive at Rangers and is willing to put his head down and work hard for the team. This should be encouraging to van Bronckhorst as he will surely want his players to put the hard yards in against Sparta to impress him in his first game.

وأضاف: “لقد أخبرني الرئيس أن ما زال لدي وقت من أجل البقاء لفترة أطول رغم عرض ريال مدريد”.
