Time’s up: Spurs must offload Jose flop

Tottenham Hotspur chief Fabio Paratici must look to offload Steven Bergwijn amid interest in his signature ahead of the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old is reportedly wanted by Eredivisie champions Ajax this winter, just two years after joining from their top-flight arch-rivals PSV Eindhoven in a £25m deal.

It’s fair to suggest that the Dutch winger has been far from inspiring since his arrival and that much is reflected by the fact that he has played just 13 minutes under Antonio Conte, who replaced Nuno Espirito Santo last month.

De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij even revealed that the Italian has previously rejected the chance to sign Bergwijn at Inter Milan and, since taking the helm in north London, he has barely spoken to the 24-year-old, which only goes to show how little his manager thinks of him.

“Conte is also the one who opposed Bergwijn’s transfer from PSV to Italy. Inter were an interested club at the time, but Conte did not need him. “Conte has only said two words to Bergwijn in two weeks at Tottenham Hotspur,” he told the Dutch newspaper’s podcast (via Sport Witness).

It’s not as if the £19.8m-rated dynamo was doing the business under Nuno or even Jose Mourinho, who was Tottenham’s manager at the time that he was signed. The Portuguese even revealed that he wasn’t keen to sign the player in quite a damning revelation during his time at Hotspur Way.

“Initially – and I’m always very honest on this – he wasn’t my first option when we decided to make a movement in the winter,” he told reporters (via the Evening Standard).

Indeed, it appears that Mourinho’s original fears have come to fruition as Bergwijn’s poor returns have seen him deliver only four goals and nine assists from 62 appearances, per Transfermarkt. That’s a direct contribution once every 244 minutes, which is pretty abysmal for an attacking player, even more so after averaging a goal or assist every 136 minutes at PSV.

That could suggest that he’s simply not up to the standard of the Premier League, as is often the case as the Dutch top-flight is some way off those levels. For instance, Sebastien Haller, who flopped at West Ham, is now scoring for fun at Ajax.

When factoring in his reported £73k-per-week wages, the Dutchman has cost Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and the club around £32.3m in total, meaning he has cost £8m per goal and £2.5m per goal or assist. Very poor value for money, it has to be said.

He is out of favour and isn’t in great nick either, as relayed by Lilywhites insider John Wenham to Football Insider, where he claimed that “Bergwijn has been terrible all season,” so it could be very wise to make a brutal decision to cut short his time in north London.

Ajax are reportedly keen, so Paratici and co would be foolish to not let him go for whatever they can recoup.

AND in other news, Conte could finally unlock Harry Kane with Spurs swoop for “incredible” 6 ft 1 beast…

Windies ready to gamble

West Indies will “gamble” in their pursuit of a drought-breaking victory against an Australian side that no longer revels in pressure situations

West Indies will “gamble” in their pursuit of a drought-breaking victory against an Australian side that no longer revels in pressure situations. Those were the bullish sentiments expressed by David Williams, West Indies’ interim coach, after an engrossing fourth day of the Adelaide Test during which the tourists’ batsmen subdued Australia’s bowlers to place themselves within reach of a famous win.West Indies will discuss overnight whether or not to bat the Australians out of the game on Tuesday, however Williams believes enough runs were already on the board. History supports his argument – only once, in 1902, has a team scored more in the fourth innings to win at the ground – and the prospect of both teams aggressively pursuing victory is a tantalising prospect.”We know for a fact that the Australians don’t like to be under pressure,” said Williams, proving Tim Nielsen isn’t the only coach in this match prepared to engage in psychological warfare. “It’s a pressure sport, especially when there is a Test match and a Test series up for grabs.”We’re going to probably sit tonight and come up with a decision whether we feel we need more runs or if we’re just going to call it quits and bowl from the start tomorrow. I think it’s enough runs, that’s my personal view, but again a discussion must take place with the captain and some of our senior players and we’ll take it from there.”A scare was thrown into the West Indian camp late on Monday when Sulieman Benn, their five-wicket hero from the first innings, was struck on the foot by a searing Mitchell Johnson yorker. Benn received treatment on the field for several minutes, raising fears that he might have sustained a serious injury.Williams, though, was confident his frontline spinner would not be troubled by the blow, and would again prove a handful turning out of the footmarks. “He bowled extremely well in the first innings to take five wickets and he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with tomorrow,” Williams said. “He’s alright. It’s a little bit swollen, but with some ice and some rest he should be alright for tomorrow. I don’t think [it’s a break]. He’s walking pretty well so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem tomorrow.”Johnson was also wary of the threat posed by Benn on a wearing, fifth day pitch. He anticipated the Australians would push for victory, rather than attempt to save the match, on a pitch that is proving difficult for scoring once the ball softens. “Down the middle of the wicket is pretty good but there are a few footmarks out near the edges so maybe, hopefully, they’ll be a bit too wide for the right-handers and be spinning away and won’t be too much trouble,” Johnson said. “[Benn] is obviously on a high at the moment. They bowled pretty well in that first innings. Kemar Roach was outstanding. I guess it just depends on seeing how Benn bowls out there again.”Williams, too, expects the Australians to take an aggressive mindset to the crease on Tuesday in their bid to secure the Frank Worrell Trophy. Not content with merely competing on the final day, Williams insists victory will not only go far to restoring confidence within his team, but also silencing the many West Indies’ critics.”This Test match is going to be very important for us,” he said. “We don’t want to go to Perth still one-down so we’re going to do everything in our power to try and win this one. We may take a gamble at times but this Test match is very important for us.”Before we came to Australia there were a lot of critics and people said a lot of ill things about the team, but I think this performance is probably going to change some of those minds. Hopefully we can go on and win the match.”

Pattinson takes six but NSW coast home

A trio of teenage fast bowlers performed creditably at the SCG as New South Wales beat Victoria by four wickets

Peter Siddle showed few ill effects in his comeback from a hamstring injury, but his efforts were overshadowed by a trio of teenagers who might one day challenge him for an international berth. The New South Wales opening duo of Mitchell Starc (3 for 36) and Josh Hazlewood (2 for 22) contained Victoria to a modest 188, and despite the record-breaking feats of the Bushrangers’ James Pattinson (6 for 48), the Blues rolled to a four-wicket Ford Ranger Cup victory.Australia’s selectors had cause to believe Christmas had arrived two days early at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with fast bowlers present and future revelling in the seam-friendly conditions. Siddle’s hopes of a Boxing Day recall received a boost after he completed 10 overs across three spells, hitting a top speed in excess of 140kph and at one stage striking Usman Khawaja a nasty blow to the ribs. But while Siddle’s eventual reward was economy (0 for 40), his teenage counterpart, Pattinson, proved decidedly more prolific. Playing just his third domestic 50-over match for Victoria, Pattinson claimed the first six New South Wales wickets to fall, including those of Ben Rohrer and Steven Smith in consecutive balls. His figures were the best ever by a Victorian in domestic limited-overs cricket, breaking Graeme Watson’s 40-year-old record, and the seventh best in Australian List A history.Using the hard, lively Sydney surface to full effect, the 19-year-old single-handedly drew Victoria back into a contest their batsman appeared to have conceded earlier in the day when rolled well inside their allotment of 50 overs. Pattinson accounted for the internationally capped trio of David Warner, Phil Jaques and Moises Henriques before the tenth over, and despite claiming three more wickets later in the innings, a lack of bowling support ensured the Blues victory with five overs to spare.”We spoke about getting the ball … nice and full early on,” Pattinson said. “That’s what Josh Hazlewood did for them. He bowled one of the best spells of bowling I’ve ever seen. My aim was just to get them driving.”With many more performances like this, Pattinson could well find himself occupying an obscure place in the history books. Only once before have brothers represented two different Test teams (Alec and George Hearne represented England, while Frank played for South Africa in the late 19th century), and following the England debut of his elder sibling, Darren, last year, the Pattinsons could double the membership of the exclusive club.Pattinson was not the only teenager to excel at the SCG on Wednesday. Hazlewood, his Australian under-19 teammate, was unplayable for much of his spell, swinging the ball away from the right-handers and seaming it back in. His figures may well have been bolstered had the Blues held their catches, but his efforts would have nonetheless impressed a national selection panel attempting to navigate their way through a fast bowling injury crisis.Hazlewood’s opening partner, Starc, proved similarly impressive. A towering left-armer at 1.96m, Starc troubled the Victorian batsmen from the outset to claim three wickets – including that of Andrew McDonald to a diving Rohrer catch that may well have been the best of the season. The efforts of NSW’s bowlers set-up a relatively comfortable run-chase, Pattinson notwithstanding, which was sealed with half-centuries to Daniel Smith (62 not out) and Khawaja (56).

Rangers: McLeish makes Arfield prediction

Former Rangers manager Alex McLeish thinks that incumbent boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst will make an effort to keep Scott Arfield at the club.

The lowdown

Arfield is among the Rangers players who are in the final year of their contracts at Ibrox. The £16,000-per-week Canadian joined the club on a free transfer ahead of the 2018/19 season, having left English Premier League side Burnley. He has gone on to make 163 appearances for the Glasgow outfit, scoring 31 goals and providing 18 assists.

This season, the 33-year-old has featured 23 times across all competitions, but only made six starts in the Premiership and one in the Europa League (via Transfermarkt).

The latest

Sky Sports pundit McLeish thinks that both the Rangers team and the manager ‘appreciate’ Arfield’s application and reckons that Van Bronckhorst will push for the Canadian’s contract to be extended beyond the summer.

“Let’s be honest, he’s a very trustworthy player, but it seems that Giovanni sees something in Scott that is important to the team,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s a grafter, he’ll go forward, he’ll check back, he’ll cover people. He does a lot of the things that we deem ugly.

“He’s also got a knack of getting forward and getting into good positions from deep positions.

“I think Scott Arfield is a player who the whole team really appreciate. I believe he’ll definitely try and nail him down and keep a guy like that in the squad.”

The verdict

How has Arfield done when he has played this season? While scoring two league goals, he has also been guilty of missing five ‘big chances’, so his goal return should really be higher. His creative contribution has also been limited at just 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes.

However, as McLeish suggests, it might be intangible attributes, like covering for team-mates, which make him so valuable to the club.

The Canadian will turn 34 next season, so perhaps the wisest course of action for the club is a short-term deal on slightly reduced wages. Whether Arfield accepts that is another matter.

Nesta quarta, Clayson terá novamente uma chance no time titular.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Joe Gomez update

Aston Villa have been linked with a January swoop for Joe Gomez in recent weeks.

Reliable reporter Gregg Evans claimed in a story for The Athletic on Wednesday that the defender is ‘admired’ at Villa Park, which has had a number of fans talking on social media.

Villa have four senior centre-backs on the books at this moment in time, one of which is Axel Tuanzebe, who joined on loan over the summer.

Steven Gerrard has been promised a huge January transfer kitty by NSWE, and it seems as if he could look at his former employers in a possible move for Gomez.

He’s thought to be after a new centre-back and defensive midfielder in the New Year, with Gomez a player seemingly of interest to Villa following what Evans had to say.

The 24-year-old made just his fourth start of the season for Liverpool on Wednesday evening and is yet to start a Premier League game.
