Tottenham: Paul Robinson stunned at possible Steven Bergwijn exit

Sky Sports pundit and former Tottenham man Paul Robinson has been reacting to the news that Steven Bergwijn could leave the club before the end of the month, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Ajax bid

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano earlier this month, Spurs have decided to sell Bergwijn in the winter window.

Dutch giants Ajax have submitted an offer for the 24-year-old, with Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge believing Spurs want more than the proposed £15m.

Antonio Conte is prepared to let Bergwijn go with Daniel Levy willing to back the manager, and that decision has caught Robinson off-guard.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Robinson reacts

Robinson, who features for Sky Sports, was talking to Football Insider following the news that Conte and Levy are open to selling Bergwijn.

He said he was ‘surprised’ and thought the Dutch attacker would ‘achieve great things’ under Conte.

“I’m surprised to hear that.

“Bergwijn is a player that I like. I thought his speed, his power and his willingness to run would see him fit in well under Antonio Conte. His defensive side of the game is not bad at all and he brings a lot of creativity.

“I can’t imagine he’s a player that the club will allow to leave easily. He’s still young and he’s still developing. Under Conte’s management I think he could go on to achieve great things. That’s why I’m surprised to hear that he might be leaving.

“I think a desire to play is probably one of the reasons behind the move. He’s not going to be guaranteed minutes at Spurs behind [Harry] Kane, [Heung-min] Son and Lucas Moura.”

The Verdict: Additions needed

Bergwijn and midfielder Tanguy Ndombele could be two high-profile exits before the end of the month, and if they do move on, it is key the club bring players in instead of waiting until the summer.

The pair haven’t exactly starred under Conte and it appears as if he is happy for them to go, but if they don’t add to the squad, they’d have just three senior wide options and three players capable of playing in defensive and central midfield roles.

The likes of Franck Kessie and Adama Traore have been linked as possible incomings, so perhaps Fabio Paratici will look to push through moves following updates on Bergwijn and Ndombele.

Pressure on South Africa to level series

Cricinfo previews the second ODI between India and South Africa in Jaipur

The Preview by Kanishkaa Balachandran23-Feb-2010Match factsFebruary 24, 2010
Start time 14.30 (09.00GMT)The bowlers will have to be on their mark in what’s expected to be a batting belter•AFP

The Big PictureThe series opener in Jaipur shouldn’t have got so close. Ashish Nehra should have been bowled off the penultimate ball of the innings. India’s total, as a result of that freakish incident – when the ball deflected off the stumps – should have been four runs less. India’s bowlers shouldn’t have allowed the South African tail to put their specialist batsmen to shame. A more conclusive camera angle/replay would have determined whether Sachin Tendulkar legitimately saved the boundary in the final over. All these significant incidents proved the difference between an Indian win and any other result. The South Africans would no doubt have debated these ifs and buts after that game. Dale Steyn and Wayne Parnell scripted a near-Houdini act but it couldn’t hide what was otherwise an unflattering batting performance, Jacques Kallis excepted. It was puzzling why they omitted their in-form player Hashim Amla – not the most well-known limited-overs player around but one who adds glue to the top order. South Africa missed him and could sacrifice one of the openers for him. They have to get their combination right because another defeat tomorrow will render the series lost and the final ODI a dead rubber. The other area of concern is the number of extras. All bowlers, except Johan Botha, conceded wides and there were 12 in all, which made a difference in the final outcome. It doesn’t necessarily warrant wholesale changes to the bowling attack. All they need to focus on is discipline and their ability to vary their pace a lot more to induce mistakes. It’s imperative bowlers from both sides step up because the curator at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior has promised another track full of runs. The Indian bowlers have problems too. Their struggles in the death overs are well documented and have become more pronounced in Zaheer Khan’s absence. In Jaipur, Dhoni was unhappy with the way they gave away runs with the new ball, let alone in the tense final stages. Both Nehra and Sreesanth are mercurial in nature – they either have a great day or a forgettable day. Dhoni had to rely on part-timers, and the gamble of bowling Suresh Raina didn’t pay off. Whether India bring in a specialist spinner on not is something that may be discussed behind closed doors.Form guide (last five completed games, most recent first)India WLWWW
South Africa LLWLWWatch out for…Suresh Raina: On a batting belter in Jaipur, Raina was the only Indian batsman to pass fifty in a total approaching 300. He occupied the crease for nearly 20 overs and collected boundaries with upper cuts and pull shots. His slog sweep is his best shot in the book and we’ve seen that in the IPL. His bowling was a disappointment, but that’s not why he’s in the team.Albie Morkel: He’s not in peak form with bat or ball and must be feeling the pressure. He was the batting Powerplay specialist in Australia last year but has struggled for fluency since then. With the ball, he has struggled in the last seven games, picking up five wickets at an expensive 45.80. Should South Africa opt for a spin-bowling allrounder in Roelof van der Merwe, the axe could fall on Morkel because there are already three specialist seamers in the line-up.Team newsVirender Sehwag was off the field in Jaipur with a sore lower back but the word from the Indian camp is that they’ll take a final call tomorrow. He batted in the nets without any apparent discomfort. Sreesanth was all over the place, leaking 8.22 an over, despite taking the all-important wicket of Kallis. If they choose to drop him, Sudeep Tyagi could get his chance.India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Dinesh Karthik, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Sreesanth/Sudeep TyagiThe only possible change for South Africa is the inclusion of Amla in place of someone from the top order.South Africa: (probable) 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Loots Bosman/Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis (capt), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 Alviro Petersen, 6 Mark Boucher (wk), 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Johan Botha, 11 Charl Langeveldt.Pitch and conditionsThe pitch was relaid two years back, and the curator of the Gwalior Division Cricket Association, Ajay Sahasrabuddhe, has guaranteed a 300-plus surface. He says the toss will not be a factor, and the spinners may get some assistance as the match progresses. There is a tinge of grass to bind the surface together, but it isn’t expected to give any advantage to the bowlers. To counter the dew, the groundstaff will use a spray called APSA 80 on the outfield. The same spray was used during the Champions Trophy in India in 2006. It rained on Monday night, but the forecast for tomorrow is sunshine, with a maximum of 28 degrees Celsius.Stats and trivia Gwalior has been a happy hunting ground for India, winning seven out of nine ODIs there. India and South Africa last played an ODI at this venue back in 1991, the tourists’ first international series after re-admittance. In a match reduced to 45 overs, India posted 223 and won by 38 runs. Amla has opened in 19 of his 21 innings in ODIs and has done well at that position, averaging 48.41. He averages close to 50 in ODIs and made his debut nearly four years after playing his first Test.Quotes”Each of the 16 players in the squad is capable. Winning or losing, we will try to get the best combination. The quicker we get the combination the better. Rotation will go much longer than this tour.”
“You have to see the status of player before the World Cup. Injuries keep coming on. We will try to rotate players so that the best 11-12 players are there at that time.”

It's about striking a happy medium – Ray Jennings

Despite the unexpected slowing down of their campaign, Royal Challengers Bangalore coach Ray Jennings expressed confidence in his side’s combination, and the strategy of tempered aggression

Cricinfo staff08-Apr-2010

Ray Jennings: “With players like Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor coming in, the role of each batsman has to be defined”•Indian Premier League

Royal Challengers Bangalore were the team to beat in the initial stages of the IPL, but their campaign has slowed down with defeats in three of their last four matches. Ray Jennings, their coach, acknowledged that the conservative mindset of the top order hampered their momentum, but insisted they would continue to balance defence with attack.”I think against Chennai Super Kings, the problem was that when we lost [Jacques] Kallis and [Virat] Kohli, we lost two wickets in 15 balls and just made three runs. I think that made the difference,” Jennings was quoted as saying by Deccan Herald. “We were a little bit conservative against the Delhi side. The top order has planned the innings very well over the season – to not be over-powerful in the first six overs and not too conservative as well, it’s all about striking a happy medium.”That’s why guys like Kallis and Robin Uthappa need to bat up the order and plan the innings properly. I need to trust those guys to do the job for us,” Jennings said.Bangalore had a winning combination for the first leg of the tournament, before the arrival of Ross Taylor, Kevin Pietersen and Cameron White made them tinker with the line-up. Jennings denied that the team management faced difficulties in selecting the eleven. “You might think that the permutations are confusing but I have a clear idea about them. When these combinations work on the field, it can look nice, but when it does, you look like an idiot. Drawing up permutations is an easy job, but the hard part is to maintain the right energy level in the player assigned to do the job,” he said.Jennings noted the importance of properly defining roles in a line-up filled with different types of players. “We have 120 balls to play and the role of each cricketer has to be defined according to the situation. With players like Kevin Pietersen and Ross [Taylor] coming in, the role of each batsman has to be defined. Sometimes it’s easier for an allrounder or a young Indian player to hit the ball around, and at that time the roles could be changed,” Jennings said.Jennings acknowledged the impact of the senior players in keeping the team spirit up. “We have seven or eight international captains with us and we have three legends in our ranks – Kumble, Dravid and Kallis – and not many sides have got those kind of players together. They are in the background of keeping the team together and helping me exectute the strategies with honesty and peace, making sure that we make an impact.”Bangalore’s next match is against the Deccan Chargers who are going through a slump, with five successive defeats, but Jennings was not taking them lightly. “There is no good time to play any side. Tomorrow, if [Adam] Gilchrist gets a hundred then we can struggle, so we need to come to the field with the best preparations. I don’t look at yesterday’s match as tomorrow we need to play a fresh game,” he said.

Vieira must axe Mateta to sign Dieng

Crystal Palace have not made any signings as of yet during the winter transfer window, which is unexpected when you look at how active the club was in making acquisitions in the summer.

Despite no official bids though, the club has been linked to a number of players during January.

Palace have been touted to young players in the forward line specifically, with Christian Benteke turning 31 recently and Vieira on a mission to inject youth in a squad that had the oldest average age in the Premier League before his arrival in the summer.

Vieira brought in a number of young players upon his appointment during the summer, including Conor Gallagher and Odsonne Edouard, who have both made an incredible impact on the side.

For context, they have been involved in 19 goals between them, and as a result, the club’s boss is clearly intending to continue his youth revolution as the club has been linked with 22-year-old Eddie Nketiah, and 21-year-old Bamba Dieng this month.

Whilst Gunners striker, Nketiah, has been ruled out of a move by his manager Mikel Arteta, we can focus our attention on the strengths that Marseille striker, Dieng, can offer Palace.

He could become the perfect replacement for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is not a regular choice for Vieira with just eight appearances this season and has been linked with a move away from the club, cutting his loan deal six months early at Palace.

Dieng has been impressive for Marseille, with his talents not going unnoticed after he was hailed “a Didier Drogba” type player by El Hadji Diouf who sang the young striker’s praises last year:

“He’s a striker, a Didier Drogba. All he can do is score goals. He is a young person with a future. All I have to say is keep his head on his shoulders, keep working. He is an attacker who ends up in the box.”

According to Squawka, when you compare the attacking output from Dieng at Marseille this season, to Mateta’s campaign with the Eagles, the young Senegalese forward has three more goals, a better conversion rate, over twice as many shots on target and almost double the passes completed than his counterpart.

If the statistics shown are anything to go by, Vieira clearly has an important decision to make on the future of his forward line with many choices he could make over the next few months.

Nketiah will be out of contract in the summer and thus, potentially available on a free transfer if he refuses to commit his future to Arsenal, and £30k-per-week Mateta’s 18-month loan deal also comes to an end in June too.

Therefore, the French coach will need to decide if he will sign the player on a permanent contract, but with Dieng linked it would be hard not to consider his attacking output and the potential he offers at just 21 years old.

After all, he looks the perfect player for Vieira to sign while axing the rather disappointing Mateta.

3 Teams That Have Won The Most Games In the EPL

A lesser-known fact surrounding the EPL is that there have only ever been a few teams that circulate at the top.

Of course, this is something that doesn’t tend to get a lot of media attention, and if this truth was more well-known, it could lead to a potential decrease in anticipation for certain games (something which would be a nightmare for event organisers).

Despite this, it is true; there are a select few teams in the EPL that tend to dominate all competition.

In this article, we will be taking a look at the top three teams that have won the most games in the EPL, as well as also touching upon a few of the points why this phenomenon tends to take place.

 1. Manchester United

As many of you may have already expected, Manchester United takes the number one spot on this list.

However, even though most people tend to know about United’s notorious reputation, few actually understand the true depths that their talents go to.

As a whole, Manchester United has won an impressive 697 wins.

Even without giving any explanation at all, this is already somewhat mind-blowing.

Although, when you factor in the fact that the trailing Manchester has 100 fewer wins under their belt, this only becomes all the more awe-inspiring.

There are a ton of reasons why people love Manchester United, and United fans are known for being some of the most devout followers out there.

Their impressive win rate is just one of the factors that embolden their fans to such an extent, and out of any of the teams in the EPL, they have the right to call themselves the best club overall.

Moreover, most people who know a thing or two about football know this is the case.

Just try EPL betting at 10bet or your preferred booking hub of choice and you will see for yourself that despite the fact no one likes to admit it, everyone knows Manchester United is king.

2. Arsenal

Taking the number two spot, albeit with a huge margin between the first, is Arsenal.

More so than most other teams, Arsenal is known for being phenomenal at away games, and this is just one of the reasons why they have such a high win percentage.

If Manchester United was to be crowned the best EPL team overall, Arsenal would also have to be titled as the best performer at away games, and it is certainly their redeeming factor.

That’s not to say they are in any way bad when playing from home. On the contrary, they are an amazing side, and they have some of the best football players in the world amongst their ranks.

However, if they are considered a good side while at home, they should be known as being an exceptional team whenever away, and there are few teams out there that are able to perform as well under pressure as Arsenal.

 3. Chelsea

Coming in at number three, we have Chelsea.

It is important to note that number two and number three are pretty much identical in overall wins, with both Chelsea and Arsenal being interchangeable.

Chelsea is an all-around solid team, and they excel in almost every area.

Chelsea truly has it all; world-class players, an insane work ethic, intelligent strategies – they really are an incredibly well-rounded side.

Once again, if you happen to bet on EPL then you will already be accustomed to their high favorability in almost all situations, and it is not very often that Chelsea comes up against a team that is able to deal with them easily.

Chelsea and Arsenal truly are head-to-head in terms of overall wins, with them both sitting at 597. Only time will tell which one of them will pull ahead in the long term.

Either way, they are both incredible teams, and both deserve their impressive reputations.

If you are an avid fan of football, then you may have already guessed one or two of the entries on our list.

Few people know just how dominant certain teams are within the premier league, and in reality, the teams we listed in this article are leaps and bounds above most of the others.

The EPL is one of the most competitive events there is in sports, and for just a select few teams to push so far ahead of everyone else, it only goes to show the skill and talent they each possess.

Prince fights after Woakes rattles Lancashire

Warwickshire bounced back well from defeat to Yorkshire in the opening round of the season to dominate the opening day of their County Championship match against Lancashire at Old Trafford. Ian Westwood’s men reduced the home side to 14 for 4 within the first seven overs of this Division One clash thanks to three wickets from England Lions seamer Chris Woakes. The 21-year-old took advantage of early movement to dismiss Tom Smith, Paul Horton and Stephen Moore cheaply on the way to three for 44 from 20 overs. But the hosts mounted a recovery with a fifth-wicket partnership of 133 between overseas player Ashwell Prince and all-rounder Steven Croft.Lancashire, who were lifted by seeing all-rounder Andrew Flintoff bat in the nets at lunch for the first time since his knee operation in August, were finally bowled out for 253 inside 86 overs. James Anderson then boosted the hosts with the ball when he bowled Varun Chopra in his second over. Warwickshire closed on 13 for 1 from eight overs in reply.South African left-hander Prince top-scored for Lancashire with 82 off 153 balls, including eight fours and a straight six off Imran Tahir, while Croft added a useful 64 and Glen Chapple 54 not out. After Westwood won the toss and elected to bowl, the four quickfire wickets were all caught in the slips by either Ian Bell or Jonathan Trott – Bell clinging on three times. Smith fell from the third ball of the match to Woakes, who soon undid both Horton and Moore with extra bounce. Chilton fell to Carter’s first ball courtesy of a loose waft outside off-stump.The experienced right-hander was Carter’s first of three victims and Prince was the second after lunch, also with the first ball of a new spell. Prince and Croft made batting seem a lot easier either side of the break. Croft, who had survived three strong lbw shouts from Carter early in his innings, brought up his half-century two overs after lunch and Prince’s came shortly afterwards. But both fell within the space of ten overs to halt their side’s recovery. Croft slapped a friendly Naqaash Tahir delivery to Chopra at point to leave the score at 147 for 5 in the 45th over. Prince then pulled a Carter short ball straight down the throat of Naqaash at deep square-leg in the 55th with only another 21 runs added.Luke Sutton (33) and Chapple navigated their side beyond 200 in the midst of a seventh-wicket partnership of 59 before the wicketkeeper was caught by Jim Troughton at backward point off the medium pace of Trott in the 78th.Anderson was bowled for a duck in Trott’s next over and Lancashire were back in bother at 227 for 8. Tahir snared Simon Kerrigan before Carter had Sajid Mahmood caught in the slips by Rikki Clarke to complete the innings and finish with figures of three for 64 from 19.4 overs.Chopra fell early with Warwickshire’s total on 8, but Westwood reached nine not out and nightwatchman Naqaash played out 17 scoreless deliveries as they reached the close without further loss.
