The captains of Ireland, Canada and Netherlands admitted there is plenty at stake for their sides as the ICC World Cricket League gets underway in Netherlands on July 1. Ireland launch their title defence on the opening day against former champions Kenya, while last year’s runners-up Canada face Afghanistan; the hosts clash with Scotland.Ireland captain Trent Johnston believed the tournament was a good opportunity to launch his side’s World Cup preparations. “I think Phil Simmons and the selectors are pretty happy with the side we have here. I think it is a good opportunity for the players to put themselves forward for a place in next year’s World Cup squad,” Johnston said.”We have probably got five or six of the regulars here and rest of the guys are trying to put themselves up for further selection. We are in sort of a rebuilding stage, I suppose, before the tournament in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”Johnston also saw the event as a stepping stone for the younger generation of cricketers in his squad. “We have a couple of guys who will be making their debuts, hopefully at some stage during the tournament. Craig Young, Andrew Bilbirnie, George Dockwell and Paul Stirling played in the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year. They are now in the senior squad and it is a fantastic achievement for Irish cricket to see these guys developing and making into the senior ranks,” he said.Johnston was eager for Ireland to retain their status as the top Associate side and challenge the top teams. “I just want to keep Ireland at top of the Associate tree and keep knocking at the door of the big boys above us. We were close to beating Australia a couple of weeks ago and if we can take that sort of commitment and ability on the field and put three disciplines together, we have got a very good chance of lifting the trophy again,” he added.Canada captain Ashish Bagai said his side was brimming with confidence ahead of this year’s event. “The 2009 tournament was very important for us as the pressure was obviously higher. We did well and what we can take away from that tournament is the confidence which we can use in this tournament. All the six teams are evenly matched so it is going to be a tough tournament but we believe we have enough gas in our tanks to finish at the top,” Bagai said.Bagai believed the tournament would give him a good idea of his side’s progress in cricket’s pecking order. “This is a very important tournament for us. It’s a milestone and a good checkpoint which we can use to see where we stand and what we need to do in future. It gives us a good time to try out a few youngsters and identify our strengths and weaknesses seven months away from World Cup 2011,” he said.Peter Borren also had the World Cup lead-up in his sights, but nothing short of victory in the WCL Division One would do for the hosts. “It is a home tournament and obviously, at the back of our minds is the World Cup but at this stage the most important thing is to win the tournament,” Borren said.”We have to win games of cricket and let’s try to put 100 overs of quality cricket together. It’s always a challenge and it will be the same for all the teams here. I have no doubt that at times during this tournament we’ll see some fantastic innings played by the Netherlands top six or seven batsmen. I also have no doubts that at times our bowling will be sharp.”It’s very often in cricket that you bat very well but let yourself down a little bit with bowling or fielding or the other way round. It has been a challenge for all the Associate sides to put it together for the whole match and our challenge in this tournament will be to be competitive and consistent match after match,” Borren said.

West Ham United: Dean Jones thinks Declan Rice will leave

According to transfer insider Dean Jones (via Give Me Sport), it is ‘extremely hard to see’ midfielder Declan Rice remaining a West Ham player next season.

The Lowdown: January’s disappointment

Irons fans were left fuming after the club failed to bring in any fresh faces during the January window, as it became increasingly clear that the squad could do with bolstering their options in a number of positions. This is particularly the case in attack, where Michail Antonio remains the only recognised senior striker at the club.

It was claimed that the east London club were actively pursuing various options in January. David Moyes admitted that West Ham “probably made three record transfer bids” throughout last month, as quoted by the Evening Standard.

However, these last-ditch attempts proved to be unsuccessful, sparking outrage amongst supporters and concern in the club’s race for a top four finish and Champions League qualification.

This has also now ignited the feeling that Rice may seek a move away from the London Stadium in the summer.

The Latest: Jones thinks Rice will leave

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have identified Rice as their ‘principal midfield target’ for the summer’s transfer window.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones has weighed in on this claim, saying: “It’s extremely hard to see that (Rice remaining a West Ham player next season) at this moment in time.”

The Verdict: Can’t allow it

According to SofaScore match ratings, Rice has been the Irons’ best player in the Premier League this season, and by some distance too. He has averaged a 7.25/10 rating, just one of five Hammers players to exceed 7/10.

Having appeared in every game bar one this season in the English top flight, it is imperative that Moyes and everyone at West Ham does everything they can to keep Rice at the club, as he is clearly a ‘priceless’ asset.

The Scotsman believes that the 23-year-old is ‘worth more than £100m’, so it should take a mammoth bid to push the Irons into accepting an offer, and if they have any serious ambitions about challenging the ‘big six’ going forward, they should still have some thinking to do even if a £100m+ bid arrives.

Ultimately, it may all depend on how desperate Rice is to leave the club in the summer.

Adam Reach let down West Brom vs Luton

West Brom have conceded their fourth defeat in five league games, with new manager Steve Bruce only picking up one point out of a possible nine, as his side took a 2-0 defeat yesterday away to Luton Town.

The Baggies were able to hold off their hosts in the first half, but despite dominating possession throughout the game, the side conceded two goals in the second half after Cameron Jerome and Allan Campbell found the back of the net to deny West Brom any chance of taking anything from the game.

The story of the season for Albion has been their inability to pose a clinical attacking threat in the final third, by wasting hundreds of chances over the last few months that has cost the side the opportunity to challenge for automatic promotion and now they are battling for a place in the play-off positions in the final months of the season.

One player who let down the team today was Adam Reach, who was relied upon to create chances, cause problems for the Luton defence and find the back of the net, all of which he completely failed to achieve throughout the game.

According to SofaScore, the West Brom winger failed to record a single shot on or off target, lost possession of the ball in every three of his 47 touches, made no attempts to dribble the ball, lost 60% of his duels and only completed 24 passes throughout his 90 minute performance.

In fact, it’s a surprise that Reach was picked for the starting eleven by the manager in the first place, considering the forward has played 26 games and registered not a single goal in the Championship this season, with 0.2 shots on target per game, it leaves a huge question mark over the manager’s judgement of the player.

The ex-Newcastle manager was clearly brought in to solve the issues that Valerien Ismael failed to resolve in his tenure, but it doesn’t seem that there are any improvements of note in the three league games that Bruce has taken charge of, which will surely be a huge frustration for the Baggies fans who were hoping a new manager could inspire change for the club.

West Brom have now fallen to 11th in the Championship table, with the side facing a huge challenge against 7th place Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening, and Bruce must identify the right players to assemble his attacking line quickly, with the current selection failing to respond effectively.
