Teams aim to finish strongly

Australia will hope to maintain their improvement in form after finally registering a win at The Oval, but Andrew Strauss has reminded his team of the importance of not slipping back into bad habits

Match factsJuly 3, 2010, Lord’s
Start time 10.45am (9.45GMT)Big pictureAustralia ensured there would be no first one-day whitewash for them with a much improved performance at The Oval as England slipped back into a few bad habits with the series safely in the bag. Both Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower have called for a big effort in the final match to ensure the scoreline finishes in emphatic style: 4-1 looks at lot better than 3-2.However, the visitors are starting to move through the gears having taken two weeks to shake off the rust from their recent break. With Shaun Tait back in the attack the bowling line-up has a much more threatening look with both Tait and Ryan Harris operating above 90mph, while Doug Bollinger has continued his consistent form. The batting, which let the side down in the first three matches, was anchored by 90s from Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke at The Oval as the two leaders led from the front. This final outing of the series will be a good test for England to see how deep they can dig now that a whitewash is no longer on the cards. It hasn’t often happened that the team has won a series with two games to spare, but they won’t want laziness to creep into performances. The batting has been led by Strauss and Eoin Morgan, but it’s about time Kevin Pietersen built a substantial innings and Craig Kieswetter needs a score. And, of course, this is the last meeting between these two sides before a certain encounter in Brisbane on November 25. Both teams will have gained some useful knowledge over the last two weeks, but a lot can change over the next five months.Form guide (last five completed matches)England LWWWW
Australia WLLLWWatch out for…For Steven Smith this is becoming a tour of great significance. The 21-year-old legspinning allrounder is now the team’s No. 1 slow bowler after Nathan Hauritz’s injury and is primed for his Test debut against Pakistan. He has shown his skills in all three disciplines during this series with useful contributions lower down the order, the ability to pick up important wickets and his speed in the outfield. England will be watching him closely over the next few months.Craig Kieswetter came into this series with great things expected of him after a successful World Twenty20 campaign. He was meant to provide the top-order power that has long been lacking in England’s 50-over cricket. However, it hasn’t quite work out that way and Kieswetter has been troubled by Australia’s quick bowlers. A player of his style will always collect a fair few failures, but in a series of five games at least one good score is required. A flat pitch and quick outfield at Lord’s provides him the chance to show what he can do.Team newsAs usual, Strauss gave little away about possible changes to the team. “We’ve got the series against Bangladesh coming up as well so maybe we can look to chop and change a little bit, but on the one hand the 11 players we’ve played so far have done a very good job and we’re 3-1 up in the series,” he said. Ian Bell and Ajmal Shahzad again played for the Lions yesterday to keep them active, while Ryan Sidebottom is still waiting for a chance. The form of Tim Bresnan with the ball and Luke Wright with the bat has dipped in recent matches, but Flower has faith in his group after their recent successes.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Michael Yardy, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson. Now that Australia are finding some form it seems unlikely they will alter a winning line-up unless they want to give Josh Hazlewood another outing. The three-pronged fast attack has been impressive, while Steven Smith is a confident cricketer. Tim Paine has had a lean series and with his Test debut looming would like some runs to settle his nerves.Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Shaun Tait, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Doug Bollinger.Pitch and conditionsLord’s in midsummer for a one-day international should mean just one thing – runs, and plenty of them. Expect a surface with decent pace and carry, but there shouldn’t be much help for quicks if the sun stays out.Stats and Trivia The two teams have met 11 times in ODIs at Lord’s and it’s Australia who hold the edge with six wins to four. There was also a tie in the NatWest Series final of 2005. Despite the ground’s reputation for high-scoring, in the 11 matches only three 250-plus totals have been scored with England’s 278 for 7 (off 55 overs) in 1989 the highest.Quotes”We don’t want to finish this series 3-2 having been 3-0 up. To win a series against the number one team in the world 4-1 would be an outstanding achievement.”

Afghanistan blaze to thumping win

Afghanistan continued their domination of Scotland, following up their big win in the Intercontinental Cup with a nine-wicket thrashing in the first ODI of a two-match series in Ayr

Scorecard
Afghanistan continued their domination of Scotland, following up their big win in the Intercontinental Cup with a nine-wicket thrashing in the first ODI of a two-match series in Ayr.Karim Sadiq and wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad struck unbeaten centuries to make a mockery out of a target of 225, which they chased in just 31 overs. Both players dealt in boundaries, Sadiq smashing 11 fours and three sixes and Shahzad, the more ruthless of the two, striking 15 fours in his 72-ball ton. Any revival in Scottish hopes after the early wicket of Noor Ali Zadran was crushed by the unbeaten 218-run stand of the centurion pair.Persistent strikes had put Scotland under pressure in their innings but their lower order stepped up to take them to a respectable score. Shapoor Zadran was expensive but captured three wickets while the rest helped contain Scotland. Opener Fraser Watts top scored for them with 55 but at 141 for 7 it seemed the Scots would be bowled out for under 200. However, captain Gordon Drummond chipped in with a quickfire 35 and the last three wickets added 83. Their effort, however, was in vain.

Aston Villa: Oliver Skipp ruled out for Spurs

Tottenham will be without midfielder Oliver Skipp for this evening’s clash with Aston Villa, Alasdair Gold reports.

The Lowdown: Villa looking to bounce back

Steven Gerrard’s side have struggled in recent weeks, losing their last three Premier League games.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have dropped into the bottom half of the table as a result, with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of rivals Wolves.

Despite their poor form, Villa know that a win against Antonio Conte’s side will take them back into the top ten, and Spurs have now been handed an injury blow for the clash.

The Latest: Skipp setback

Skipp, who Conte seems to love, has been missing since February, with reports last weekend suggesting he was ‘very close’ to making a return.

However, as relayed by Gold, Conte confirmed that Skipp won’t be ready for the trip to the Midlands due to a setback.

The Verdict: Boost for Gerrard

Of course, seeing a player out with a long-term injury shouldn’t be celebrated, but Gerrard may welcome the news of not having to face Skipp later today.

He was a regular in December and January, with Spurs winning five Premier League games and drawing one. Their unbeaten run came to an end against Chelsea, Skipp’s last game prior to his injury.

Conte will once again have just three central midfield options to choose from, making the latest update on Skipp a blow for Spurs.

Leeds must sign Josh Cullen

Leeds United are nine points clear of the bottom three and can now start to plan for life in the top-flight for another season, barring a late collapse.

Jesse Marsch will be making key decisions over what he wants to do in the transfer market and will surely be looking at the current weak points in his side.

One player who may find himself on his way out of the team is central midfielder Mateusz Klich as he has struggled in the middle of the park.

The Poland international has averaged an underwhelming SofaScore rating of 6.69 across 22 starts, losing 59% of his duels and making 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game. These statistics show that he has been below par this term as he has been unable to perform to a high level on a consistent basis.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

Marsch will have the opportunity to finally replace him in the summer and he can do just that by securing a deal to sign Josh Cullen.

Leeds are reportedly interested in a swoop for the ex-West Ham battler and he has the potential to be an excellent replacement for Klich.

His former manager Lee Bowyer previously lauded his performances, saying: “Every single game he’s outstanding, very rarely does he do anything wrong.

“Again he protected the back four so well in the middle of the park. Josh doesn’t really give the ball away. He tidies things up, he breaks things up well. He was outstanding.”

Although he was speaking about his displays for Charlton, these comments are also an apt way to describe his form for Anderlecht. In the Belgian Pro League, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.22 as he has won 60% of his duels and made 3.5 tackles and interceptions per game.

This shows that he can be an improvement on Klich in the midfield as he is stronger in his individual battles and has been able to perform to a higher level on a consistent basis.

Although, it is impossible to say whether or not he will be able to adapt to playing in the Premier League, which is one question mark that can be put on the move.

Cullen has, however, shown that he can perform at an international level, with his former Ireland boss Mick McCarthy commenting:

“He’s technically very good and a tough little sod. He puts his foot in and stands his ground. You wouldn’t think he’s a little fella that gets knocked around. He handles the ball particularly well. He’s got good legs and gets around the pitch.”

It is now down to Victor Orta and Marsch to work together to bring Cullen to Elland Road in the summer to see if he can replicate his dominant midfield displays for Anderlecht in the English top-flight next term.

WIPA slams Sarwan's contract exclusion

The WIPA has “condemned” the exclusion of Ramnaresh Sarwan from the WICB’s list of contracted players, and has questioned the board’s reasoning behind the decision

Injury prone: Ramnaresh Sarwan pulled a hamstring during an ODI against South Africa in May•Getty Images

The West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) has “condemned” Ramnaresh Sarwan’s exclusion from the WICB’s list of contracted players, and has questioned the board’s reasoning behind the decision. The WICB said it had cut Sarwan because of concerns about his attitude to fitness. According to a WIPA release, Sarwan’s recent injuries had occurred while playing for West Indies and that he had shown initiative in trying to recover quickly, following all directions issued by the board.According to WIPA, Sarwan had been informed by the WICB chief executive, Ernest Hilaire, of the board’s concerns about his attitude to fitness following a report on West Indies’ tour of Australia in November 2009. Neither the players’ association nor Sarwan, however, had seen the report. According to the WIPA, in a letter dated January 11, the board said it was not highlighting specific incidents illustrating its concerns about Sarwan but only wanted to sensitize him to the problem. In its reply to the WICB, the players’ association had asked for specific instances when Sarwan did not meet the standards demanded, and wanted the batsman to be given an opportunity to state his case. No reply had so far been received by the WIPA.The players’ association also highlighted that Sarwan’s recent injuries had occurred while on West Indies duty – a back problem during the tour of Australia, and a hamstring injury in the home series against South Africa earlier this year. It also outlined the measures Sarwan had taken on his own initiative and expense – undergoing treatment in Florida and Canada – to recover from the injuries. The WIPA also said that there had been no complaints from the team management about Sarwan’s attitude or his commitment to training in the past and during the series against Australia and South Africa.Sarwan, however, had said that he was expecting the setback but that the disappointment would not affect his focus in leading Guyana’s ongoing Champions League Twenty20 campaign in South Africa.

Madureira 0 x 1 São Paulo (31/1) – Copa do Brasil

Goleiros: Victor e Cleiton;
Laterais: Samuel Xavier, Patric, Fábio Santos e Danilo;

Meio-campistas: Arouca, Adilson, Roger Bernardo, Elias, Gustavo Blanco, Tomás Andrade e Cazares;
