Crystal Palace are looking to bring former defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka back from Manchester United this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Tough times for Wan-Bissaka

The Englishman traded the Eagles for United in a big-money transfer in the summer of 2019, having caught the eye hugely with his performances in the Premier League.

Things haven’t panned out the way Wan-Bissaka would have hoped at Old Trafford, however, with the right-back really struggling to make his mark and finding himself in and out of the team, starting just 20 of 35 league matches this term.

With Erik ten Hag coming in as manager, it could be that he deems the defender surplus to requirements, allowing him to find another club immediately.

The Latest: Palace return mooted

According to The Athletic, Palace are interested in bringing Wan-Bissaka back to the club at the end of the season, with a loan move mooted initially.

He is seen as someone who could be an upgrade at right-back on the ageing Nathaniel Clyne, returning to the club he joined as a boy and helping strengthen Patrick Vieira’s squad.

The Verdict: Ideal summer signing

While Wan-Bissaka has plenty of critics after a poor spell at United, coming back to Palace this summer could end up being the ideal solution for all parties.

He was once hailed as the ‘best in the world’ in one-on-one situations by Jamie Carragher and he was superb for the Eagles, hence United wanting to sign him in the first place.

At 24, there would be no concern surrounding Palace re-signing a player who is past his best and Vieira could see the best of him again back in familiar surroundings.

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) is unlikely to be used during India’s upcoming Test tour of South Africa because India are against the system, according to sources in Cricket South Africa

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will not be a part of India’s upcoming Test tour of South Africa.Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa confirmed the news to ESPNcricinfo saying, “[We] will definitely not be using it.”Majola who was in Dubai for the ICC Chief Executives Conference did not explain what had led to the decision but a CSA official said the main reason was, “India are not keen to use it”.Corrie van Zyl, the South Africa coach, said his team had been expecting this development, given India’s stance on the issue. South Africa have used the UDRS in other home series, most recently against England in 2009-10. “We are not going to use it and thats the end of it,” he said. “I like UDRS and it does eradicate a lot of decisions that are wrong, which can only be good for the game.”I’m not disappointed, I almost knew it was not going to happen in any case, so it’s not a major disappointment, and it will still be a very good series without it.”Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, had said in October that the UDRS needed to be implemented consistently and that technology was the way forward in cricket. “I think if the UDRS is going to be successful it needs to be implemented properly by the ICC and not on a 50-50 basis like we have seen so far,” he had said. “It must be used all of the time and not for selective series’ like we see now.”Smith’s team-mate AB de Villiers has also come out in support of the UDRS. “I’d love to see the referral system used,” he said. “It’s necessary to get some of the really poor decisions out of the game. It frustrates everyone. I’ve spoken to some umpires, who also back the system and really want it in place. It’s something that we all have to get used to, and it’s taken us a while to get used to it. I’d like to see it being used in all cricket.”India have played a series in which the UDRS was used only once – in Sri Lanka in 2008. They struggled with their referrals on that tour, getting only one review right, while Sri Lanka successfully challenged 11 decisions. Since then the UDRS has been used in Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand and West Indies and has found favour with several captains and players. The Indians and the BCCI, however, are firmly opposed to the system, even though the ICC have approved its use in principle during the 2011 World Cup.MS Dhoni, the India captain, reiterated his reluctance to accept the system during the recent home series against New Zealand, calling for the standard of on-field umpiring to be improved instead.

Dean Jones has dropped an update regarding the future of Leeds United forward Rodrigo.

What’s the talk?

In a recent interview with Football FanCast, the transfer insider and journalist stated his belief that Jesse Marsch could be left with no other choice but to retain the services of the Spain international this summer as, despite the 31-year-old being the highest earner at Elland Road, Victor Orta is unlikely to be able to recoup anywhere near the £26m he paid for the forward back in August 2020.

Regarding the future of Rodrigo, Jones said: “He’s on silly money, but it was a big signing at the time and Leeds probably paid a bit over the odds for him in a team he didn’t really suit. I don’t think it’s really going to work out for him.

“The problem Leeds have got is they’re stuck because of the money they paid for him. They’re not going to [that receive that kind of money from his sale] unless they can turn around his form.

“So Jesse Marsh is going to work on it, and see if he can find a role for Rodrigo in his team. But first, he needs to know what division they’re going to be in.”

Marsch must axe Rodrigo

While it is true that Leeds are extremely unlikely to receive anywhere near the £26m fee they splashed on Rodrigo almost two years ago, when considering the 31-year-old’s generally below-par returns following his move to the club, in addition to the fact he is reported to be earning £100k-per-week at Elland Road, the argument that Marsch and Orta must move the Spaniard on this summer is a rather easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 27 Premier League appearances this season, the £13.5m-rated second striker has scored six goals, registered one assist and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.6 shots, making 1.3 key passes and completing 0.8 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the former Valencia forward who Kevin Phillips dubbed “disappointing” earlier this season average a distinctly uninspiring SofaScore match rating of just 6.85, ranking him as Marsch’s seventh-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, while it is true that Rodrigo’s returns have not exactly been disastrous, when taking into account the 27-time capped international cost the club a substantial amount of money, coupled with the attacker being the club’s current highest earner, it is clear to see that the Spaniard is not living up to his price-tag nor his salary.

And, with it being reported that Leeds are keen on the signings of both attacking midfielders Brenden Aaronson and Brennan Johnson this summer, it would appear that room must be made in the Whites’ first-team squad for these potential arrivals – leading us to believe that Orta must move Rodrigo on at the end of the season, even if it is for a financial loss.

Ganesh Sanap, the president of the Northern California Cricket Association (NCCA), has thrown his hat into the ring to fill the vacant vice-president position for the USA Cricket Association (USACA). Sanap told ESPNcricinfo that he will run for the position against Hemant Buch. Both men are involved with cricket administration in the San Francisco Bay Area, and it now appears that a regional rivalry will be played out on the national stage.”I just want to bring new energy to the old guard,” Sanap said. Sanap traveled with USA’s U-19 squad to New Zealand for the 2010 ICC U-19 World Cup, where he served as team statistician. If elected, he says his focus will be on youth development, which he feels has been badly neglected by USACA.”As far as the national administration is concerned, all they care about is funding tournaments, which is basic duty of course. Other than that, there has been no plan shown by anyone on the national level that they care about the growth of the game or development of the sport.”Only a handful of committed people at the regional level, they’ve been doing it by themselves. Some have vested interests; some have real passion for the sport. There won’t be any vested interests from me.”Sanap served as secretary of the NCCA from 2006 to 2007 before taking over as president of the league in 2008. The league had 33 teams in 2010, and Sanap says his biggest accomplishment was the formation of the NCCA youth program and U-19 team.”It’s one of the best. My major focus on the league level as well as the national level will be getting more programs in place for youth cricket, identify coaches across the nation, across the various regions, and then if possible, have a few dollars earmarked for them to hold those regular coaching camps, at least a two-day session or a weekend every month to coach U-19 players or youth and then gather reports from them, maintain a database of how the players are progressing.”According to John Aaron, Secretary of USACA, the general elections for USA’s governing body will take place “sometime between March 8 and November 30” following guidelines from the USACA constitution. A USACA board meeting is scheduled for January 15-16 in New York in conjunction with the departure of the USA squad traveling to Hong Kong for the ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament. Aaron believes that the date of this year’s USACA elections will be finalized at the upcoming board meeting, but said that a full meeting agenda hadn’t been finalized.Depending on the date selected for the elections, Aaron also indicated that someone may be appointed to fill the USACA vice president position left vacant after the resignation of Nabeel Ahmed up until the elections are held.

Ajmal Shahzad and Chris Tremlett are due to fly back to the UK on Thursday afternoon, instead of undertaking the four-hour flight to Perth ahead of the seventh and final ODI against Australia, as England take stock of their injury situation in the lead-up to the forthcoming World Cup. Liam Plunkett, the Durham pace bowler, has been called up as a replacement and is already in Perth ahead of Sunday’s match, having flown in from the Lions tour of West Indies.The visitors were left with the bare bones of a pace attack after Tremlett was ruled out of Sunday’s fifth one-day international in Brisbane with a side strain, then Shazhad limped off after eight overs of the same game with a hamstring injury. Both players underwent scans on Tuesday with Shahzad the more serious concern as he is part of England’s World Cup squad.The ECB confirmed that Shahzad’s injury is a minor hamstring tear, and though Tremlett’s scan showed no significant damage, it was decided that the best scenario for both players was to get back to England as soon as possible for one continuous period of rehab, rather than undertake four days in Perth before a long-haul flight back to England.Even before the latest brace of injuries England had been badly hit during the one-day series with Tim Bresnan (calf) and Graeme Swann (back) flying home, while Stuart Broad remains on the sidelines as he recovers from his abdominal injury. It means there are concerns over more than half England’s first-choice World Cup attack, although the news on Broad appears more positive with the allrounder making good progress ahead of the team’s arrival in Bangladesh on February 13.Even so, with the ICC confirming that non-squad members will not be permitted to take part in the World Cup warm-up matches against Canada and Pakistan in Dhaka on February 16 and 18, Shahzad’s place on the bench could come under scrutiny if he is unable to prove his fitness in the coming fortnight. Plunkett, 25, has taken has taken 37 ODI wickets at 34.37 and was part of England’s 2007 World Cup squad.”Liam Plunkett has been part of the England performance programme and England Lions squad this winter so we are confident that he will be ready to play a role for England should the need arise,” Andy Flower, the England team director, said.”With our preparations for the World Cup starting in less than a fortnight we need to prioritise getting our World Cup squad members fit and ready for the start of the tournament.”
