Chape vira pra cima do Inter, Jandrei salva no fim e tira time do Z-4

… e a insinuação deu certo!

Clarke shifts focus to IPL

With the tour of the West Indies successfully completed, Australia captain Michael Clarke has said he is now looking forward to joining Pune Warriors at the IPL

With a successful tour of the West Indies completed, Australia captain Michael Clarke has now shifted his focus to what will be his first stint at the IPL. Clarke is expected to arrive in India on April 30, to join his franchise, Pune Warriors. This will be something of a Twenty20 return for Clarke, who last played in the shortest format in October 2010.”The crowds look fantastic [at the IPL] and it’s going to be nice. To be honest with you, to be back playing some Twenty20 cricket, I’m looking forward to that. I’ve never been to the IPL. I’ve said for a long time that when the opportunity comes up and I feel that it’s right for me, I’d love to get over there and have a crack and see what it’s like,” Clarke said after the Dominica Test. “I am looking forward to it. We [Australia] have a good break this winter. I’ve only got two one-day tours the whole winter, so if I was ever going to go this is the opportunity.”In 2009, Clarke had pulled out of the IPL auction, citing Australia’s busy schedule. He then retired from Twenty20 internationals in January 2011 in order to focus on ODIs and Tests. In fact, the only domestic Twenty20 games he has played were six matches way back in 2004, for Hampshire in England. The other Australia players headed to the IPL

Shane Watson – Rajasthan Royals
Michael Hussey – Chennai Super Kings
Ben Hilfenhaus – Chennai Super Kings
Ryan Harris – Kings XI Punjab
David Warner – Delhi Daredevils

Clarke said he is happy to play under former India captain Sourav Ganguly and observe his method of working. “I think that Sourav’s always been a nice guy. I’ve always got along with him well and I look forward to playing under him. It seems like he’s doing a really good job as captain-coach over there, I’ve spoken to a couple of the boys and they seem to be really happy about how things are. So, yeah, for me it’s an eye-opener.”At the time of signing Clarke, Warriors captain Ganguly had said the franchise were interested in Clarke, despite his lack of Twenty20 experience, since he has all-round ability. “He can bat and he can bowl. He is a big player,” Ganguly had told ESPNcricinfo. Ganguly will now be hoping that Clarke’s arrival will help thwart what has been a poor run for Warriors – the team had begun the tournament well, winning three of their first four games, but have since lost four of five.

All-round Zimbabwe down South Africa

Zimbabwe turned a series that was expected to be completely dominated by South Africa into a contest, with an unlikely but clinical victory over their neighbours

So-called small-fry teams tend to up to their game when doing battle against their big brothers and Zimbabwe did it in a big way. They turned a series that was expected to be completely dominated by South Africa into a contest, with an unlikely but clinical victory over their neighbours.Zimbabwe seemed to surprise even themselves with an effort that started with a century stand between Vusi Sibanda and Hamilton Masakadza, and ended with superb bowling from the senior statesman Chris Mpofu, legspinner Graeme Cremer and new-comer Richard Muzhange. South Africa’s attack, as they were yesterday, failed to take early wickets or find the right lengths on a slow surface. Unlike the match against Bangladesh, their batting was also sub-standard. They succumbed in the chase to a bowling pack that understood their own conditions and were able to restrict runs, create pressure and bowl out a line-up that was expected to produce much more. After allowing Zimbabwe to reach an above-par score, South Africa’s batting line-up had a fairly tough task on a pitch that is known to get slower as the day goes on. Senior paceman Chris Mpofu immediately found the right tempo but Kyle Jarvis was unable to do the same from the other side. He bowled too wide of offstump, allowing both Hashim Amla and Richard Levi to find the boundary.Mpofu made up for Jarvis’ early blunders when he removed Amla with a slower ball that was mis-timed to Masakadza at mid-on. He would have had Colin Ingram out as well, but Vusi Sibanda spilled a catch at fine leg.Ingram went on to make Zimbabwe pay and was South Africa’s top-scorer with his 48, an innings that was built on the cut shot. While Levi was with him, South Africa seemed in control. Jarvis fed Levi sumptuous full tosses while Ingram moved his feet well against the spinners. Prosper Utseya put the brakes on their charge when he had Levi caught at deep midwicket by Craig Ervine, as the batsman attempted to clear the rope.South Africa’s middle-order was exposed and they did not cover themselves in glory. Justin Ontong gifted a catch to Utseya in the covers off Cremer, before the googly accounted for both Dane Vilas, who was bowled, and JP Duminy, who was stumped. South Africa teetered at 91 for 5 and it was up to Albie Morkel to haul them back.He clubbed a six of Cremer’s last over but again did not produce the expected fireworks. Muzhange removed Morkel by inviting him to chase a wide and having him caught behind. Robin Peterson and Ingram both skied desperate shots off Mpofu’s final over and all that was left for Zimbabwe to do was nip out the tail. Jarvis bowled Tsotsobe to earn some redemption and a memorable victory for his team, which excelled in all disciplines. With the bat, Masakadza and Sibanda gave Zimbabwe a dream start. Boundaries were not the hallmark of the duo’s stand, although when they found them, they found them well. Sibanda signalled their intent when he slog-swept Lonwabo Tsotsobe over backward-square leg at the end of the second over. The pair ran well between the wickets and did not allow the run-rate to stagnate when South Africa’s spinners came on after the Powerplay. Although JP Duminy and Peterson had more success in controlling proceedings, Zimbabwe’s rotation of strike ensured they continued to build. Once comfortable, they batsmen even took on the spinners. Sibanda hit Peterson onto the roof of Harare Sports Club while Masakadza brought up his 50 with a meaty blow over long-on off Justin Ontong.Masakadza was out shortly afterwards as South Africa’s first success came in the 14th over. He attempted the slog-sweep but top-edged to deep midwicket. Sibanda was dropped off the first ball of Parnell’s second over, when he swung to Richard Levi at long-on, but the mistake was not too costly. After one more pull shot, which went for four, Sibanda swung hard and offered Tsotsobe a catch at third man.Elton Chigumbura, who was moved up the order to No.3, holed out to the first ball he faced but Zimbabwe rebuilt well. Brendan Taylor withstood a barrage of slower bouncers from Morkel and eventually lashed out. His slog sweep to long-on and would have been caught had Ontong held on, but he palmed it over for six. Taylor launched an assault on Parnell and took 17 runs off the left-armer’s third over, which proved a major part of the difference between the two sides.

SA our toughest challenge – Anderson

South Africa represent the toughest test of England’s credentials as the No. 1 ranked Test side, according to James Anderson

South Africa represent the toughest test of England’s credentials as the No. 1 ranked Test side, according to James Anderson. However, Anderson insisted that, while in the past England may have allowed the pressure of such a high-profile series to affect their performance, they now had the weapons and the confidence to overcome the tourists. While some may question Anderson’s short-term memory – England were tested pretty thoroughly in the UAE and failed to find the correct answers – there is some truth in his words. England have won seven Test series in a row at home, with South Africa the last side to defeat them, in 2008. Whatever their problems in Asia or the Middle East, England remain a formidable side in their own conditions.”We’ve been playing really well at home, but this is going to be our toughest challenge for a while,” Anderson said. “But we are still confident going into it. We think we have the necessary weapons to be able to beat them. That’s the way we go into most series; thinking we are going to win.”There’s not going to be time to ease into the series. We’re going to have to be on top of our game from the first minute. It’s going to be an intense few weeks and it’s good that they’re not going to be back to back Tests, as it’s going to be really hard cricket. It’s two of the best teams in the world. They are a strong team, they have played well in England before, we lost the last series here to them so it will be really interesting.”In the past, maybe, the pressure might have got to me in particular, maybe a few other guys. But now it’s more exciting. You want to play in big games. You want to test yourself against the best in the world, which is going to happen in this next few weeks.”Essentially my job is the same as it has been for the last 12, 18, 24 months. I have to go out there and set the tone, take the first over and try and bowl as accurately as I can for long periods of time. There might be a bit of added pressure because it’s a bigger test for us. And there might be more patience needed as they are renown for being resilient and for soaking up pressure better than most other countries. So we realise that and it’s exciting more than anything as you’re testing yourself against the best in the world. They have four batsmen in the top 10 in the world and it’s really exciting as a bowler to be able to challenge yourself against batsmen like that.”England have one selection issue to resolve. The identity of the third seamer remains unclear, with Steven Finn, in particular, pressing hard for inclusion ahead of Tim Bresnan. If Bresnan is fully fit – and it is open to debate whether he has ever recovered full pace since undergoing elbow surgery in early December – then his superior batting will ensure his selection. If Bresnan is unable to hit the bat as hard as he used to in net sessions over the next 24 hours, however, Finn may yet still play. It is a strong side that can afford to omit such a fast bowler.Bresnan is one of three England players to receive injections in recent days. He has had a saline injection in his elbow, Matt Prior had a similar injection in both Achilles tendons and Graeme Swann had a cortisone injection in his elbow. All three are expected to be fit, though their treatment does underline the sense that the demands on this England squad are overly onerous. These players cannot be patched up indefinitely. The one other area that England might have concerns is their catching. Both in recent Tests and ODIs they have squandered a worrying number of chances in the slips, at gully and at point. It is, arguably, an area in which they have been weak since the departure of Paul Collingwood and, in a tight contest and against a daunting batting line-up, they know they cannot afford to reprieve the likes of Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis or AB de Villiers.”It happens like that sometimes,” Anderson said. “You go through stages of dropping catches, there’s no science behind it. We practice as hard as ever and go into the match confident of being able to catch the ball. We realise that a spectacular one-handed catch might be a huge partnership breaker and a match-turning thing, so we practise really hard for those situations and hopefully we can hold on to the ball this week.”Anderson dismissed the idea that speculation over Kevin Pietersen’s future would distract England. Pietersen, who indicated last week that he would be prepared to retract his limited-overs retirement if a compromise could be reached over his international schedule, may well remain the focus of discussion outside the dressing room but, in it at least, the issue will not be discussed.”Now we’ve met up as a Test side, we’re going to concentrate completely on it and get ready for first thing on Thursday,” Anderson said. “There’s often headlines around players – some more than others – so that comes with the job. Like I said, that’s left outside our little bubble in the dressing room. We just talk about what we’re going to do on Thursday.”The Pietersen issue will continue to fester, though. Not only are England set to name their 30-man preliminary squad for the World Twenty20 on Wednesday – a squad in which Pietersen will be noticeable by his absence – but because there is an outside possibility that this could be his last Test series. That remains an unlikely scenario. While Pietersen has requested permission to play a whole season of IPL in 2013 – a request that is certain to be refused – that does not mean he will decline the offer of a central contract this autumn. His desire to play Test cricket, and the Ashes in particular, remains strong. Pietersen, it should be noted, has just set up his own cricket school. Presumably it will be a school with long holidays. It is also worth reflecting on the source of recent leaks about Pietersen and their purpose: at the end of last week Pietersen was emerging as a more sympathetic figure; a highly-talented player who was keen to spend more time with his family and prolong his career through periods of rest. Now, after the suggestion that his real intention was simply to play more IPL, much of the sympathy for Pietersen has evaporated. In that light, Anderson’s comments about the ECB’s handling of the situation were intriguing.”The ECB have been very good at handling a lot of situations,” Anderson said. “They’ve got much better in the last few years at handling certain situations. They’ve handled it brilliantly at the minute and I’m sure they’ll continue to do that and I’ll leave them to do that.”Generally when Kevin is making the headlines he tends to play very well. So hopefully he’ll continue the form he’s shown this summer and get us some big runs we’ll need in the middle order.”

Mahmudullah strangles Ireland at the death

Two near-perfect overs from the offspinner Mahmudullah proved the difference between two well-matched sides

Having lost the first game of this three-match series by 71 runs on Wednesday, Ireland had a point to prove. But while the margin of defeat this time was the narrowest possible, their pain was considerably greater because they know they should have won this Twenty20 international and claimed the scalp of Bangladesh for the third time in five years. While Bangladesh batsmen failed to produce the fireworks of 48 hours earlier, their spinners again strangled Ireland. Two near-perfect overs from the offspinner Mahmudullah proved the difference between two well-matched sides and gave Bangladesh an unassailable 2-0 lead.Mixing his deliveries, he conceded just four singles in the 18th over, and kept up the pressure with ten needed off the final over. His first three balls cost two runs as Ed Joyce and Andrew Poynter struggled to get him away, and both then perished to catches on the long-on rope as they tried to find the boundaries Ireland now needed. A fuming Trent Johnston smacked a six off the final ball, as he had in the narrow defeat to England here three years ago but, as then, it wasn’t enough.Bangladesh again won the toss and batted, naming an unchanged side. Phil Simmons had to plan without Boyd Rankin – who strained a muscle – and opted to do without Niall O’Brien. George Dockrell and Andrew Poynter came into the team.”Niall hasn’t been hitting the ball well”, Phil Simmons, Ireland’s coach, said afterwards, “he needs to work on a few things. I also wanted to have another look at Andrew Poynter who earned his chance in the [World T20] qualifiers in Dubai when he batted very well in the final when we needed him.”Bangladesh found the going a bit tougher than in the first game, as Ireland’s attack kept tighter lines. Tamim Iqbal continued his struggles in the shorter game with a nine-ball duck, hauling his average below 14. Mohammad Ashraful kept the order marshalled, making a solid 38 while Mushfiqur Rahim and Ziaur Rehman briefly threatened.Johnston was his usual miserly self, claiming Tamim to a brilliant catch by Dockrell, over his shoulder running back. The bowling of Kevin O’Brien, who hadn’t bowled on Wednesday, was a bonus. He kept it tight and also took the scalp of Mahmudullah in four overs that went for 23 but, oddly, Paul Stirling wasn’t used. A fine maiden T20I half-century by Nasir Hossein, whose unbeaten 50 included four fours and two sixs, boosted the total to 146 for 6.Bangladesh opted to open with spin, but William Porterfield and Paul Stirling were looking fluent when the captain was run out for 14. Stirling went soon after for 26, which meant Ireland the innings lost its best chance to explode.Joyce and Gary Wilson recovered well, putting on 55 in 7.4 overs, before a rush of blood saw Wilson stumped off Elias Sunny. Joyce, a brilliant judge of a run, battled on and kept the total moving but he hit only boundary in his 44-ball 41, and Andrew Poynter also struggled to hit the mostly spin attack.Simmons was positive, and acknowledged his team had greatly improved their performance. “That was a lot better, we were on top for 80% of the game, but we lost it in the last overs of each innings,” he said. “We conceded too many and then Mahmudullah and Shakib showed us how to put pressure on.”
