IPL 'catalyst' in Pietersen controversy – Flower

Andy Flower, has suggested that the player’s desire to appear in a whole season of the IPL proved to be the catalyst that destabilised his relationship

George Dobell21-Aug-2012Andy Flower, the England team director, has defended England’s handling of Kevin Pietersen and suggested that the player’s desire to appear in a whole season of the IPL proved to be the catalyst that destabilised his relationship with his team-mates and the ECB.Flower, speaking for the first time since Pietersen was omitted from the final Test against South Africa, admitted that batsman may never play for England again, but insisted that the team could retain their No.1 Test ranking even without the man many consider to be their best player. Flower also joined those calling for a window in the international schedule for the IPL, though he conceded there was little realistic hope of that at present.”I think it’s fair to say that Kevin’s issues over being available for the entire IPL have changed his attitude,” Flower said. “I think that was the catalyst for a lot of the stuff.”The IPL and the international fixtures in England are an area of conflict. And it will continue to be an area of conflict in the future. It would be better if there was a very clear window prior to our international season starting. But it doesn’t look like that is an issue that is going to be sorted out in the future so it may well recur.”Flower did accept responsibility for some failures of man management within the England set up, but insisted that Pietersen was guilty of far more serious errors of judgement.”You are questioning whether he has been managed properly,” Flower said. “I suppose it’s fair to ask that question. I think that’s what we’ve been doing over the years. There are certain behaviours that are unacceptable and I think we’ve seen some of that just recently. So to move forward we must get over those hurdles.”If you are asking if we take some responsibility for it I’m quite happy to take responsibility for a number of issues if that is the case. I don’t think text messages from an England player to South African players with some of the content I’ve heard that is in them is my responsibility.”I think one issue that I could have handled better is when I heard that some of the players were occasionally looking at that Twitter account that had been set up by some England supporter, or Nottingham supporter. I could have nipped that in the bud earlier.Andy Flower has said there is a long way to go before Kevin Pietersen can return for England•Getty Images

“But let’s just be perfectly clear on the severity of the situation. There is one thing a few players having a giggle at a Twitter account, there is another on some of the issues that we have seen rear their heads over the last two weeks. It is not just about the text messages, there are other issues to be resolved.”Flower confirmed that the ECB had approached officials with the South Africa touring team with a view to being shown the text messages Pietersen sent to their players that are alleged to have contained derogatory comments about England captain Andrew Strauss, but insisted the issue extended deeper than a mere spat between two senior players.”The issue is not specifically between the captain and Pietersen,” Flower said. “There are a number of unresolved issues and it would be inaccurate to judge it as just an issue between those two.”At this juncture there’s no meeting in the diary. We’ve just finished this Test match. I understand some people would like this resolved overnight, but I don’t think it is something that can be resolved overnight if we want to go about it properly. There are a number of outstanding issues to be resolved. An example of that would be finding out exactly what these text messages contained if we do really want to move forward either way.”I think face to face and man to man, where you can look people in the eye, is always the best way to resolve most issues. I think these things should remain private. I don’t think they should be played out in the media so leaking information, using PR agencies etc to resolve this issue is not the correct way to go about it.”I’m not sure of exactly the best way to investigate it, to be honest. We’ve tried to focus on playing cricket leading up to this Test match which is how this Test series should have been. It’s really sad for everyone involved the focus wasn’t on playing cricket here.”Flower was quite clear that Pietersen’s current apology – either the YouTube video or the letter sent through his management company – was inadequate and did not constitute a resolution to the situation. He also hinted that it was hard to see the issue being resolved before central contracts are offered to players, which is likely to happen before the team departs for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in mid-September. That suggests Pietersen may well not be considered for England’s tour of India. He confirmed that Pietersen would not be offered a central contract until the issues were resolved.”He sent an apology via his agent to the ECB,” Flower said. “If you are going to move on from situations such as this you need to know exactly what situation you are moving on from. So I think we need to get to the bottom of some of this speculation and rumours before we move on.”Regardless of central contracts, I wouldn’t like to put a time frame on it because that might unrealistic. To resolve certain issues of trust and mutual respect, it might take longer than that. I would rather not speculate [on whether Pietersen may have played his last game for England]. But he was speculating on it during the Test series, so there is a chance I suppose.England’s one-day side has shown it can flourish in the absence of Pietersen with Ian Bell slotting into the openers’ role, while Alex Hales made 99 in the Twenty20 against West Indies. Flower believes that, if the situation is not resolved, the Test team can move back to the top of the rankings without Pietersen.”Without a doubt,” he said. “English cricket has a great history and it has a great future. It is bigger than any one player. You will always move on from anyone, whether it be a captain, a coach or a player. I think the most important thing is that we do the right thing for England cricket. That’s how we will make our decision.”We try to make decisions that are in the best interests of the England cricket team or English cricket. That is what I’ve tried to do since I joined this team and that’s what I will continue to do.”

Steven Finn out of first Test

Steven Finn has been ruled out of the first Test against India in Ahmedabad due to the thigh strain that limited his warm-up participation to four overs in the first match in Mumbai

Steven Finn won’t have any warm-up games to recover before the second Test•Getty Images

Steven Finn has been ruled out of the first Test against India in Ahmedabad due to the thigh strain that limited his warm-up participation to four overs in the first match in Mumbai.England captain Alastair Cook confirmed that Finn would not be considered for the opening match of the series as it would be a significant risk. England are still likely to field one fast bowler under an injury cloud with Stuart Broad set to play after recovering from the bruised heel that meant he has bowled just 10 warm-up overs on tour. While Finn and Broad bowled with impressive pace at practice on Sunday, it was always unlikely that the England management would two risk two bowlers in the same Test. Finn barely participated in fielding practice and did not bowl a single delivery in the nets. While he is not thought to have suffered any injury setback, it seems the England management are keen not to risk his recovery; particularly in a Test that will be played in hot, arduous conditions. The problem for Finn now is that there are no further matches on the tour outside of the Tests so he will have to regain form and fitness in the nets. The most likely replacement for Finn appears to be Tim Bresnan who bowled well in the second innings of the final warm-up match against Haryana where he found useful reverse swing. Graham Onions, Stuart Meaker or a second frontline spinner in Monty Panesar are the other options and Cook is happy with the depth available.”I wouldn’t call them back-up bowlers, they’re all vying for a place to play in this XI, to be lucky enough to play for England,” Cook said. “They’ve all worked hard to get used to these conditions and as selectors we’ve got a tough decision to make.”

– A minha prioridade e intenção é permanecer.

Compton in awe of Cook's records

Nick Compton was happy to play a supporting role as Alastair Cook continued his remarkable from in the Test series against India

George Dobell in Kolkata06-Dec-2012

Nick Compton: ‘It would be nice to have gone on, of course. But if you’d told me I’d get my maiden 50 today, I would have taken it – no doubt’•BCCI

Nick Compton was happy to play a supporting role as Alastair Cook continued his remarkable from in the Test series against India. Compton, the 29-year-old playing his third Test, scored his maiden half-century at this level in helping Cook, who finished the day unbeaten on 136, post an opening partnership of 165 on the second day of the third Test in Kolkata. It was Cook’s 23rd Test century and his third in successive Tests this series. Not only did that make him the leading century maker for England in their Test history but it also made him the youngest man from any country to pass the milestone of 7,000 Test runs.Afterwards Compton spoke in something approaching awe of his captain’s performance. “Standing out there today, looking up at the board and seeing those stats: 7,000 runs, the youngest player to do that; it was quite an amazing moment,” Compton said. “I thought ‘I’m batting with this guy; he’s just got another hundred, and he’s the all-time leading English hundred-maker.’ It speaks volumes that he’s been able to do that from a young age. A lot of players only find their feet at perhaps my age, 28 or 29, but he did it a long time before. And he is still is a young player.”Compton compared the experience of batting with Cook to batting with Marcus Trescothick, his team-mate and captain at Somerset. “To bat with him is quite similar, in some ways, to batting with Trescothick,” Compton said. “It’s how clinical they are with every delivery. They make very few mistakes and every ball is played in a similar fashion.”It’s the mark of a serious player that he does the simple things very, very well and for a long period of time and that’s been very clear batting at the other end. Not a lot is said; he’s very clear in his gameplan.”He gives the other players a lot of confidence out there, because he’s so solid. He’s very unflappable, not a lot of airs and graces, and just gets on and does it. It makes a big difference to have someone who’s so chilled out at the other end.”Compton admitted he was disappointed with the manner of his dismissal for 57 – given out lbw when replays suggest the ball hit the glove – but accepted that it would have been a tough decision for the umpire.”It hit my glove” he said. “It’s one of those things and a bit disappointing. But from the umpire’s position, it was obviously a very difficult decision. That’s the way it goes.”As a team we are very satisfied. We spoke about developing partnerships and we managed that quite well. It’s a good way to grind them down. The longer you spend out there the easier it gets.”The relative comfort with which Compton has taken to Test cricket – he averages over 40 after five innings at this level – might be used as a ringing endorsement of the county game. After all, he has played little England Lions cricket, little cricket abroad and owes his selection purely to the mountain of runs he has scored for Somerset over the last couple of years. The fact that he has not looked unduly troubled suggests the step-up between county and Test is not so large as is sometimes suggested. The truth is not quite so straightforward. Compton actually felt the need to hire himself a private coach and mentor, the former county wicketkeeper Neil Burns, to help him develop and refine his character and his game. Tellingly, Monty Panesar also credits his relationship with Burns for kick-starting his career. The fact that both men had to venture outside the county system should raise a few questions.Compton may well be a less limited player than he has shown to date. There was a time when he tried, like so many of his generation, to emulate Kevin Pietersen. But that was never his greatest strength. Having reasoned that, aged 29, he is only going to have one shot at a career in international cricket, he has reined in his attacking instincts and adopted a largely risk-free approach to batting. The big scores may not have come just yet, but he has provided England with a decent platform in four out of his five innings. Indeed, Cook and Compton here recorded their fourth successive partnership of 50 or more; the first England pair of openers to do so since Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick in 2002.”I’m really chuffed,” he said. “It would be nice to have gone on, of course. But if you’d told me I’d get my maiden 50 today, I would have taken it – no doubt.”I’m somebody who does try to spend a lot of time out there. Starting my Test career, I wanted to give myself the best opportunity and I feel like I’ve done that, in patches, but I haven’t managed to go on and get a big score.”I’ve probably missed out again, but I’m happy to get that first 50. Alastair was obviously the dominant partner, but with each milestone that came up – and seeing their bowlers ground down. It gave me a lot of confidence.”
