The Chalkboard: Tony Pulis should use John Obi Mikel at centre-back vs Blackburn

[ad_pod ]

Middlesbrough will travel to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday facing something of a centre-back crisis, but Tony Pulis should solve it in unlikely fashion by playing new boy John Obi Mikel at the heart of his defence.

On the chalkboard

Well, just a few weeks ago the Teesside outfit had a plethora of centre-back options with the likes of Daniel Ayala, Aden Flint, Dael Fry and Danny Batth.

However, having seen the latter’s loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers ended early so he could join Stoke City on a permanent deal, before seeing Ayala red-carded and Flint go off injured in the 1-0 defeat against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night, they are down to the bare bones.

Pulis favoured a back five including two wing-backs for the clash against the Blades, but he may be forced to completely change his thinking at Ewood Park given the Spaniard’s suspension, and the hamstring issue that he says will keep the former Bristol City man out for “three to four weeks”.

What should he do?

It is a crucial clash for Boro considering they are only in the play-offs on goal difference following their latest reverse, and the experienced Welshman will want to take at least a point in Lancashire.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

While the likes of Ryan Shotton and George Friend could step into a centre-back role if required, the 61-year-old should instead leave them where they are and bring Obi Mikel into the backline to partner Dael Fry in a four-man defence.

The Nigeria international has been known as a defensive midfielder throughout his career but he has appeared at centre-back on occasions, and he has all of the traits to do a good job there as well.

Considering the number of central midfield options Pulis has available to him he wouldn’t miss the experienced 31-year-old there, and as a result it is a bit of a no-brainer decision.

Sunderland would make a smart addition in the form of Sam Gallagher

Sunderland’s season has continued in strong fashion as they remain confident of fighting for a place in the Championship next season.

Whilst they’re currently in 3rd place, the automatic places are potentially just one point away, if they manage to win their game in hand.

With that in mind plus the fact there are 14 games still to play, Sunderland have the right group of players to sustain a promotion push.

Jack Ross has already made a huge difference around the club but some may feel that promotion must be gained this season, if not, their better players will leave and it will be a case of starting all over again.

Whatever division they play their football in next season, Southampton’s Sam Gallagher is a striker equipped to play in either and would pose as another great forward option for the Black Cats.

Gallagher, (who is valued at £2.7 million on Transfermarkt) will be feeling very disappointed as to how few opportunities he has had to impress this season.

Even with Southampton sat in the relegation zone, the 23-year-old’s services have been called upon for just seven minutes in the Premier League, as his exit from St Marys’ seems destined to happen sooner rather than later.

Having not moved in January, Sam Gallagher was a missed opportunity for a number of sides. He scored seven goals in total for Championship side Birmingham, meaning if Sunderland got promoted or not, he would be a good option in either league.

The Black Cats do currently have a number of capable strikers but it doesn’t hurt to add more firepower to their squad, something Sam Gallagher would undoubtedly give them.

Impressive stats put Vicente Guaita up there with the Premier League’s best

[ad_pod ]

For a while, the weak link in an otherwise fairly solid Crystal Palace defence was Wayne Hennessey – the Welshman may have put in a few impressive performances last season and this campaign, but he is largely a liability and so the arrival of Vicente Guaita in the summer surely meant that the Eagles were finally going to be in a safe hands.

The Spaniard has provided that much-needed security and the whole back four looks better for it, but the stats behind the former Getafe man’s performances are even better than anyone imagined.

In a report published by Sky Sports, Guaita is second only to Petr Cech, who has made far fewer appearances than the 32-year-old,  in terms of his all-round goalkeeping displays.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Guaita is statistically the best custodian in the league at coming for crosses, while his shot-stopping numbers are also respectable; his distribution requires some work but he was never meant to impact play in the way Manchester City’s Ederson does, for instance.

Roy Hodgson has said that Guiata is the Eagles’ no.1 and that is is up to Hennessey to wrestle the gloves back – surely, after seeing the former’s incredible stats, it will take a miracle for the former England boss to hand the gloves back over to the Welshman.

Tottenham fans take to Twitter to slam Harry Kane

Tottenham fans didn’t have the best of times yesterday against Arsenal. The Lilywhites fell to a 1-1 draw at home to the Gunners at Wembley, and it could have been worse had Hugo Lloris not stepped up with a late penalty save. However, for the opening goal from Aaron Ramsey, the fans were far from pleased with Harry Kane’s sloppiness at the other end.

North London derbies are always massive games of football and the fans are always way more up for them than any other game. Harry Kane may have brought up a record yesterday when he bagged from the penalty spot, becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in North London derbies, however, before that the fans weren’t happy with their #10 for the way he lost the ball to start Arsenal’s counter-attack.

After Kane was caught in possession the Gunners sprung their trap. The ball found its way to Alexandre Lacazette who found a wonderful pass to Aaron Ramsey, despite a blunder from Davinson Sanchez, and from there the rest was history. It was far from a good goal to concede and the Lilywhites were very quick to jump on Harry Kane’s back for his areas.

You can read the Lilywhites’ thoughts on Kane here:

The Lilywhites weren’t happy with Kane at all when they shipped the opening goal, yet the fans forgave him when he bagged from the spot.

Alan Browne is a signing Celtic should look to make this summer

Celtic maybe unsettled off the pitch but on it, they’re eight points clear and have another great chance of securing the treble.

Since the turn of the new year, Celtic have been in the mood to charge towards another league title.

That looks to be something they will again obtain this season and that’s down to the hard work put in by the players on the pitch.

Even without the boss who brought them a double treble Brendan Rodgers, Celtic have all they need to still strive towards completing an unprecedented ‘treble treble’.

Whether they complete it or not, Celtic will hope to bolster their squad given the chance this summer.

As yet another quality midfield option, the Hoops would do well to acquire the services of Preston’s Alan Browne.

Browne, (who is valued at £450k on Transfermarkt) is someone who has enjoyed a strong season on a personal level, which could make him a person of interest for a team like Celtic.

The Hoops must be desperately trying to find ways of improving their team and even though midfield is not a position of concern, Alan Browne could offer Celtic something new and original.

The 23-year-old has been a great positive for Preston this season, as he’s scored 11 goals and registered four goals from the centre of midfield.

That is a record any striker would be happy with so it just shows what an impact Alan Browne has made to Preston’s season.

With domestic titles always possible to win, Celtic want to focus on improving their chances in Europe. With that in mind, Browne has without a doubt shown the form capable of bettering the Hoops’ side and that’s a deal all involved should look to pursue this summer.

West Brom and Sam Byram could relaunch themselves together

The promotion dream is well and truly alive for West Brom having performed very well for the majority of the season. Where last season must have been a truly depressing watch, Darren Moore’s side look fun. Simply put, supporting the Baggies must be fun again. Phew.

Even after suffering a big loss to Leeds, they’ll surely remain one of the favourites to return straight back into the Premier League, a testament to how well Darren Moore has done in his first full season in charge. Nobody is going to write them off and, if they do, it’ll be at their own peril.

Still, plenty of goals might have been scored but, defensively, the Baggies have been found out on occasion, something that needs to change whether or not they gain a move back into the top flight.

One player who if he stayed fit, could definitely help that cause and that’s West Ham’s Sam Byram.

Byram, (who is valued at £3.6 million on Transfermarkt) had started the season positivity for Nottingham Forest, before that all came crashing down after playing just three games for his loan club.

After sustaining a serious injury, Byram was sent back to West Ham, where he is getting treatment, waiting for his chance to get back out onto the pitch. He has become a forgotten man in football but still is just 25-year-old, which proves he has plenty of time to find another club and become a regular there.

Mason Holgate has been a good option for West Brom since he joined on-loan but it’s unknown as to whether or not he will stay past the season.

The capture of Sam Byram – who only has one year left on his contract – would stop the loss of Mason Holgate becoming such a problem for the Baggies and you never know could even go above and beyond what the Everton loanee has done.

They could relaunch themselves together.

QPR fans react to Toni Leistner’s message

[ad_pod ]

In light of their draw with Hull on Saturday, QPR captain Toni Leistner has taken to Twitter to express his gratitude for the continuing support amid tough times, and fans have been quick to react.

The Hoops fought back from 2-0 down to claim a respectable point away from home Saturday, in what was a much improved performance from the poor display that saw them lose to Rotherham at Loftus Road previously.

The R’s have endured a torrid run in recent months and have thus slipped to 18th in the league standings – to show how bad their form has been, they would be rock-bottom if the last ten games were the only ones that counted.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

Fortunately for Steve McClaren’s men, there are still eight games of the season left and they will be hoping to use those to propel themselves away from the dreaded drop-zone.

Here’s what the Hoops faithful had to say in response to the 6-foot-3 defender’s comments…

Why Steve McManaman is the worst co-commentator of them all

[ad_pod ]

It has long been a common strategy for sports broadcasters to use a co-commentator who is human Marmite. Mark Lawrenson is the perfect example here, though he thankfully pollutes our airwaves less frequently these days. ‘Lawro’ and his world-wearied cynicism can reduce an otherwise rational person to shed all objectivity and become a husk of pure hate. Others though will find his downbeat mien endearing. They might even chuckle on occasion at his terrible puns.

To some his cranky uncle routine grates while others buzz off it and at the end of ninety minutes he has split the room, which is precisely what his employers are after. More so – because Marmite isn’t typically used as a metaphor for polarising opinion due to some people quite liking the taste while others can take it or leave it – there will be very few viewers who will be apathetic to his performance. This, for ITV, BT, Sky or the BBC is gold-dust because it sparks debate. It elicits discussion and better yet discussion that often takes the form of interaction on social media.

In this regard it makes sense to have a Marmite individual on co-comms duty. After all, what’s the point in having a colour commentator – as they’re called in America – if the person in question is beige?

This brings us to Steve McManaman, who is absolutely not beige but similarly absolutely does not split the room. Nobody likes his work: nobody except Liverpool supporters due to his unrestrained bias but by that metric he is probably best employed by LFCTV. McManaman unites the room in a frantic search for the remote control and the mute button.

Should you want examples to prop up this assertion there are a great many available. Indeed, simply search for his name whenever the nation is being subjected to his narcissistic, chippy monologues and you’ll find an outpouring of abject misery and exasperation. “Can we not start a country-wide campaign to get Steve McManaman taken off Champions League coverage? I’m yet to find a single person (other than those running BT Sport) who actually enjoy listening to him”.

There’s one, plucked randomly from an endless timeline of opposition. “If I was stuck on a desert island with Steve McManaman and a tin of custard, I’d eat McManaman and talk to the custard”. There’s another. “Is there a worse co-commentator in football than Steve McManaman?”. And another.

These examples of course ultimately prove very little because a quick scan of Twitter following the co-commentary of pretty much anyone who is anyone brings forth the same levels of enmity. That’s who we are these days. That’s what Twitter is. What is pertinent, however – and immensely so – is how few responses there are offering up an alternative take and by ‘few’ I mean none, none whatsoever. Nobody defends him and this in an era where to be a contrarian is to be heard. Nobody says: “Well I find him alright to be honest”. Elsewhere should you try to seek out praise for his output it’s akin to locating a fan of international breaks.

This makes BT Sport’s decision to install the former Liverpool winger as their primary co-commentator and then persist with him despite universal objection a distinctly odd policy. Some might say it is ground-breaking as it goes against every established formula for building a successful business. If we’re being less charitable it could be called insane.

Because it is not unusual for a broadcaster to put before us a retired player who is roundly disliked. That in itself can work and has done so many times in the past. But to give a microphone and regular chunks of airtime to a retired player whose output is roundly disliked: what is the point in that? Where is the sense in that? Sod charity; that borders on the definition of insanity.

“McManaman ruins every single game when he’s commentating”. Another criticism found online and a reminder that when you descend past the Marmite man to a person who is widely considered to be exceedingly bad at doing his job it goes beyond gripes and japery to something more serious. We pay a lot of money to subscribe to BT and when McManaman is ruining that experience we’re being short-changed.

And you know exactly how. You can hear him now can’t you as you’re reading this. The blatant, impassioned bias that is pro Liverpool or the perceived underdog. The never-ending, meandering conversations with ‘Fletch’ that not only completely exclude the viewer but seem to forget there’s a game going on. The inevitable ‘whoops’ when a mistake is made. The growled contention that ‘there’s nothing wrong with that’ when a 50-50 ball is fiercely contested followed by a high pitched echo of those same words when he sees the slo-mo.

The constant, inane chatter that has you wishing he would just shut up, just shut up for thirty seconds and let us enjoy the football without us feeling that we’ve been unfortunate enough to be seated in the pub next to the most annoying human being on the planet. The solitary insight that is spewed out ad nauseam throughout a game. How many times do we need to be informed that McManaman thinks Kane is too isolated? Once, if that.

When all of this is pooled together it gives you a migraine. It takes you outside of the game. McManaman does the very opposite of what his role demands.

Little wonder then that he has so few defenders but let’s at least try here. Let’s strive for one positive thing to say about unquestionably one of the very worst co-commentators that has ever sullied our speakers. He is better than Michael Owen. That’s all I have.

Dear BT Sport, football implores you to sack off Steve ‘Macca’ McManaman.

Many thanks, everybody watching.

Celtic: Legend sees revenge as main motivator and it’s hard to argue against

Celtic are in an unusual position going into this weekend’s Old Firm clash, having lost the last game between the pair — their first defeat in the fixture since March 2012, a run of 15 games.

With one hand already on the title trophy — a win this weekend will see them have a 13 point lead with only 21 available — so beating Rangers is, in many ways, the only unfinished business remaining in the league this season.

Rangers have enjoyed their December victory for the last few weeks, and Celtic will be looking to set the record straight against the blue half of Glasgow on Sunday.

Revenge will be uppermost in the minds of Neil Lennon’s side, according to former Celtic striker, Charlie Nicholas, as they try to expel the hurt they feel from losing the last one.

He told Sky Sports: “This is a very special football match.

“Celtic are hurting after Rangers finally got that win over them but it was the manner of the win. Rangers looked like challengers then. Unfortunately for Rangers, that’s disappeared and it’s falling apart.

“Celtic will be hurting from the defeat. The way that Rangers celebrated after waiting so long to get a victory – I can understand that. But revenge is in the air. Celtic will want to cement this title. The gap and the merit is there, Celtic have earned the right to go and bully Rangers a little bit.”

Nicholas, no stranger to big derby matches, having played in both the Old Firm and North London varieties, believes that a win will “go a long way” towards Lennon being given the Celtic hot-seat on a permanent basis for a second time.

“They haven’t done spectacularly well but they’ve been winning games

“Neil [Lennon] is a bright guy – he won’t panic. People are jumping on his case for his over the top celebrations but why wouldn’t he react like that? He wants the Celtic job and this game on Sunday – if he wins it – will go a long way on him getting the job.”

It promises to be an exciting game at Celtic Park on Sunday. The added ingredient of Rangers having won the previous meeting will ramp the atmosphere up, and is likely to spice things up on the pitch too, if it needed anything extra anyway.

Celtic will go into the game as odds-on favourites, and rightly so.

Rangers still have to cast a cautious eye behind them, while Celtic’s dominant position atop the table means they will be playing with less pressure looming over them than Steven Gerrard’s team.

Three points will see the title retained for Celtic — realistically, even if not mathematically — and that incentive, along with the revenge factor will lead to a comfortbale win for Lennon and Co.

Millwall fans react as Tim Cahill announces his retirement

[ad_pod ]

Millwall and Everton legend Tim Cahill has announced his retirement from football this week, with the Australian set to hang up his boots at the end of the season after a fantastic career spanning 20 years.

The 39-year-old made 217 appearances for the Lions between 1998 and 2004, scoring 52 goals – of which his winner against Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final of 2004 will remain the most memorable amongst the Millwall fans.

The striker enjoyed similar success at Everton after securing a move to Goodison Park that summer but surely felt his business at the Den was unfinished and eventually returned to east London in 2018, registering a further 10 appearances.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Even on the cusp of his forties, the heading expert is still scoring goals at a professional level and has netted twice for Jamshedpur in the Indian Super League this campaign.

Here’s what the Millwall fans had to say about his retirement on Twitter…
