Argentina player ratings vs Ecuador: Emiliano Martinez bails out Lionel Messi in penalty shootout as La Albiceleste advance to Copa America semifinals

Emi Martinez saved two penalties to spare Lionel Messi's blushes as Argentina advanced to the Copa America semifinal

Argentina are yet to hit their best in Copa America. La Albiceleste have been loose at times, a shadow of their World Cup-winning selves. But Thursday evening, another lackluster performance proved to be enough, as the reigning champions beat Ecuador on penalties 4-2 after a 1-1 draw on regulation to secure a semifinal spot.

Lionel Messi struggled through the contest, failing to make a mark – and missing a spot-kick, again. Still, those around him were decisive, with Emi Martinez saving two efforts to send Argentina through.

La Albicelste found the breakthrough after 35 minutes, with Lisandro Martinez nodding home at the far post off a well-worked corner routine. Enzo Fernandez could have made it two before half time, but dragged an effort narrowly wide.

They seemed sure to have won it in normal time, but Kevin Rodriguez's glancing header in second half stoppage-time sent the contest to penalties.

Messi missed Argentina's first, but Martinez stood firm – and the rest of La Albiceleste converted to secure a fifth-straight semifinal spot.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Emi Martinez (10/10):

Made some smart stops in the first half. Saved two penalties in yet another heroic shootout performance.

    Nahuel Molina (7/10):

Won almost all of his tackles, made a couple of important recoveries, and kept the dangerous Kendry Paez quiet.

    Lisandro Martinez (8/10):

Couldn't miss from close range to open the scoring – his first goal for the national team. Solid defensively, too.

    Cristian Romero (7/10):

Circulated the ball well, won his duels, and drew a few important free kicks to kill the game late on.

    Nico Tagliafico (6/10):

Completed all-but one of his passes. Most of the Ecuador threat came down the other wing.

    Midfield

    Rodrigo De Paul (6/10):

Went about his defensive work effectively in an unfamiliar right-sided role. Gave up a penalty with a silly handball.

    Alexis Mac Allister (8/10):

Tidy and classy in the middle of the park. Assisted his team's opener. Understated but so effective.

    Enzo Fernandez (5/10):

Missed a trio of good chances in the first half. Loose in possession and poor defensively, too. Not his best game.

    Nico Gonzalez (6/10):

Put in a shift on the left, and ate up grass. Offered little offensively – but it didn't matter.

    Attack

    Lionel Messi (6/10):

A bit loose early on after missing the last game with a leg injury. Still provided some memorable moments with clever passes. Not hit his best in the tournament – yet.

    Lautaro Martinez (5/10):

Fed off scraps in the first half. Didn't have many more opportunities after the break. Subbed after a frustrating hour.

    Subs & Manager

    Julian Alvarez (5/10):

Barely touched the ball, came on as a second half sub. Scored a tidy penalty in the shootout.

    Giovani Lo Celso (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Nicolas Otamendi (8/10):

Lost his man on the Ecuador equalizer, but scored the winning penalty.

    Gonzalo Montiel (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Clement must now unleash 6 ft Rangers gem alongside John Lundstram

Glasgow Rangers face a quick turnaround from their midweek victory at Ibrox over Ross County as they travel to Perth to face St Johnstone in the Premiership this afternoon.

Philippe Clement’s side have yet to drop points in the league this year and the momentum is certainly with the Gers as they look to secure a first title since the 2020/21 campaign.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast, the Belgian manager may look to make a change or two to his starting XI to take on the Saints.

Rangers team news vs St Johnstone

The 49-year-old coach spoke to the media prior to the match today as he gave an update on the squad, saying:

“Rabbi (Matondo) has a small muscle issue, why he was changed at HT. He had a scan and will miss this game, I think he will be back short-term.”

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Aside from this, there are no new injury issues thankfully, but that won't mean Clement will rest on his laurels ahead of what could be a tricky test in Perth.

Tom Lawrence started the tie against Ross County and was impressive, yet his recent injury issues indicate that he should be dropped to the bench given the sharp turnaround in games and this could see a first Premiership start for Mohamed Diomande.

Mohamed Diomande could be ideal for John Lundstram

Against County in midweek, Lundstram dropped slightly deeper and allowed Lawrence freedom to roam, culminating in the Welshman succeeding with 100% of his dribble attempts, taking six shots and making two key passes during the tie.

Tom Lawrence

Diomande could provide a similar attacking output should he start against the Saints. The 22-year-old arrived off the bench against the Staggies and completed 100% of his passes, made one key pass and took 14 touches.

The 6 foot maestro could benefit from playing the full 90 minutes as he works his way back up to match fitness and his statistics during the opening half of the season for FC Nordsjaelland.

Indeed, the “aggressive” midfielder – as so dubbed by analyst John Walker when profiling him last month – created three big chances and averaged 1.1 key passes per game in the Danish top flight, while his passing was also impressive, averaging an 89% pass success rate per game.

These statistics were clearly enough to see Clement make a move to bring him to Ibrox and, although it will take a few weeks for him to get up to speed with Scottish football, initial signs are promising.

With a plethora of options to choose from with regard to who partners Lundstram in the midfield, it is certainly a nice problem for Clement to have and this could see him rotate players on a regular basis.

A trip to Perth is never easy, but it will be a good match for Diomande to be thrown into and, with the experience of Lundstram alongside him, there is no doubt the Ivorian can perform well.

Three points is all that matters for the Ibrox side as they look to keep up with Celtic at the summit of the league.

Everton now eyeing move for hugely in-demand versatile wing-back

Fresh from the news that their points deduction has been reduced to six from the initial ten, Everton have reportedly turned their attention towards summer targets to reinforce Sean Dyche's side.

Everton transfer news

Everton confirmed the positive outcome of their appeal, saying in an official statement: "Everton can confirm an Appeal Board has concluded that the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November be reduced from ten points to six points, with immediate effect. While the Club is still digesting the Appeal Board’s decision, we are satisfied our appeal has resulted in a reduction in the points sanction.

"We understand the Appeal Board considered the 10-point deduction originally imposed to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks of which the Club made the Commission aware, including the position under the relevant EFL regulations, and the 9-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event of insolvency."

Whilst the Toffees are still waiting on the outcome of their second Financial Fair Play charge, they're now five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone and, for now, in a position to think about summer targets.

That said, according to Udinese Blog, Everton are among the clubs eyeing a move to sign Festy Ebosele, who can play anywhere up the right flank. Club chiefs at Goodison Park reportedly rate the Udinese wide man highly and have joined the race for his signature alongside Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United, Watford and West Ham United.

It remains to be seen just how much Udinese will demand for Ebosele this summer, but with so many clubs interested they are certainly in a strong position. Everton, potentially fresh from Premier League survival, will hope to become the next benefactors to the 21-year-old's talent.

"Strong" Ebosele could make England return

Having previously played for Derby, before joining Udinese on a free deal in the summer of 2022, Ebosele could get his return to English football just two years after departing this summer. The fact that, in the space of just two years, the Irishman could go from Championship action at Pride Park all the way to the Premier League highlights just how impressive he has been in Serie A with Udinese.

Former Derby teammate Craig Forsyth knew all about Ebosele's talents from the very start too, singing his praises via the club's official YouTube channel: "He's been getting better and better and that's the thing. It's good to see him improving with that final ball.

"Still he can get better, there was a lot of opportunities tonight. He's a threat and he's horrible to play against. He's so strong and he's so quick and he can go both ways. He's a nightmare for a defender."

With plenty of time to get even better at just 21-years-old, Ebosele could make an instant impact in the Premier League, whether that be at Everton, Spurs or elsewhere this summer. If the Toffees stay up this season, Dyche will hope to see a number of reinforcements arrive, including the Udinese starlet.

Arsenal may have just unearthed their next Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal are well and truly flying at the moment and look like a team with titles on the mind.

Mikel Arteta's side dismantled yet another opponent on Monday night when they put six past Sheffield United to no reply and took their aggregate score from their last seven Premier League games to 31-3.

What makes it so remarkable is that the team have done this without a recognised striker, as Gabriel Jesus missed four of those seven games through injury.

The goals have been coming from all over the pitch, from defence to attack, and one player could end up replicating elements of Aaron Ramsey's game if he continues in this form.

Aaron Ramsey's time at Arsenal in numbers

The Emirates years at Arsenal have not quite delivered as much glory as fans would've hoped – yet – and there have been fewer bonafide legends to come out of it as a result.

Still, if there was one player who helped to create some of Arsenal's recent successes, it's probably Ramsey.

He may not have been as talented as Alexis Sanchez or as prolific as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but his longevity and appreciation of the fans, alongside his genuine talent, made him a popular player for long periods of his career in red and white.

For example, fans would be hard-pressed to find a more impressive individual season from a midfielder than Ramsey's 2013/14 campaign, in which he scored 16 goals and provided ten assists in just 34 appearances despite missing a large chunk of the year due to a hamstring problem.

There was also his tendency to score big goals, as it was his strike in the 109th minute that completed the club's comeback against Hull City in the 2014 FA Cup Final, just as it was his 79th-minute goal that restored the lead in the 2017 FA Cup final against Chelsea.

In all, he left Arsenal with 64 goals and 66 assists in 369 appearances, and what makes that return even more impressive is that he spent most of his time at the club in a central midfield role, exactly where one of the team's current stars could find himself playing more often.

How Declan Rice could replicate Aaron Ramsey

Yes, the Arsenal star who could come to replicate elements of the Welshman's game under Arteta over the next few years is none other than club-record-signing Declan Rice.

Now, the former West Ham United captain is known as and has predominantly played as a traditional number six throughout his career, and while he has primarily started in that position for the Gunners, he has also spent time slightly further up the pitch as a central midfielder, akin to Ramsey's old role.

In fact, the midfield "dominator", as talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, has already started eight games in that position this season, and when looking at his Premier League heatmap this year, it would be hard to argue he's acting as a traditional defensive midfielder at all.

Combine this with the £240k-per-week earner's seriously impressive offensive return of five goals and six assists in just 27 league appearances under Arteta, and it suddenly becomes clear that his last-minute winners against Manchester United and Luton Town are not just dumb luck but come from his licence to be more involved in attacking phases of play than people initially expected.

Finally, as was demonstrated on Monday night, when Thomas Partey is fit to play, he will take up the role as the designated defensive midfielder in the team, and Rice will move into the left eight role, where he appears more than competent.

Ultimately, the Gunners' new "controller", as dubbed by Kulig, is a far more talented footballer than Ramsey ever was and can help out a defence in ways the Welshman simply couldn't.

West Ham struck gold on "monster" who’d be worth more than Paqueta in 2024

Sure, the Hammers fanbase erupted into euphoria when Jarrod Bowen latched onto Lucas Paqueta's through ball to win the Europa Conference League last season, but that match marked a critical juncture for the club, who had masked a mediocre Premier League term, finishing 14th, with cup triumph – and losing midfield talisman Declan Rice to Arsenal in a club record £105m sale.

Declan Rice with the Europa Conference League trophy for West Ham.

Now, seventh and awaiting Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-finals, West Ham are much-improved – and that's thanks to some stellar recruitment. The Irons' recent past has been chequered in that regard, but Paqueta, who remains the record signing at £53m, is a bona fide success.

He might be the most expensive West Ham player in existence but it's hard to argue against his quality, and indeed the impact that he has had in bringing silverware and success to the side.

Why Lucas Paqueta's so influential for West Ham

Mohammed Kudus is a star; Edson Alvarez is excelling in holding midfield as he anchors a team nursing the exit of an irreplaceable sensation in Rice, but Paqueta is no doubt West Ham's standout player, having been courted by Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's treble winners approached West Ham with the hope of signing Paqueta in an £80m deal in 2023 but pulled out following concerns vis-a-vis the Brazilian's alleged FA betting breaches.

It's a good thing too, with Paqueta one of the most influential members of the squad; it's no coincidence that the dismal run of form throughout January and February arrived with the 26-year-old sidelined by injury.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 9% of passes attempted across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 1% for tackles, the top 19% for interceptions, the top 13% for clearances and the top 4% for aerial wins per 90.

It's easy to see why Manchester City held a vested interest in signing the £150k-per-week ace, having posted seven goals and six assists in 2023/24 and earned praise for his "mind-boggling" ability by former teammate Rice.

Paqueta might be the guy but there's another South American once on West Ham's books that actually eclipses his market value, were this player to have been sold in today's bloated market.

How much Carlos Tevez would be worth in 2024

As has been made patently obvious by the sizeable header above, that man is Carlos Tevez, who spent just one season kicking a ball about in a West Ham shirt but is undoubtedly one of the most talented strikers to have played for the London club.

A surprise acquisition from Brazilian team Corinthians back in 2006, Tevez arrived with a weight of expectation and enjoyed a decent campaign in the Premier League, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists from just 19 starts during his first season, with his goal on the final day of the term handing his side a 1-0 victory over Manchester United and preserving top-flight status.

Tevez was awarded West Ham's Player of the Year award before completing a two-year loan agreement to Manchester United before finally agreeing in principle for the permanent £32m transfer of the player, seeming to smash the British transfer record at the time.

However, Tevez infamously ditched Old Trafford to join heated city rivals Manchester City following long-standing complications regarding registration with West Ham, eventually ending an interminable saga after 99 matches and 34 goals with Manchester United by signing for the Sky Blues in 2009 for £25.5m.

But what if, theoretically, this all happened in the present? How high might the player's price tag have been? Well, thanks to those over at Totally Money, the numbers have been crunched and it's all been laid out.

Indeed, according to the figure-led site, Tevez would have cost a hefty £60m if the sale all took place in 2024, which might not have beaten the staggering sum that West Ham recouped from Rice's exit but it would have seen him enter a more lucrative realm than that of Paqueta, if not by that much – the latter man currently valued at around €50m (£42m), as per CIES Football Observatory.

This is a remarkable figure but is probably justifiable given the career Tevez would have in the Premier League, scoring 84 goals and supplying 40 assists across 202 fixtures for his respective outfits, enduring a convoluted journey on English shores but proving to be invariably deadly in front of goal, reaching his apex during his first few seasons with City, scoring 43 league goals over two campaigns.

West Ham would sure appreciate a goalscoring machine such as the Argentinian right now, with Michail Antonio nearing the twilight phase of his career and Danny Ings flattering to deceive in front of goal since signing, scoring four goals from 46 matches.

This is all tongue-in-cheek, of course. The fact of the matter is that Tevez last played for West Ham 18 years ago, but it does illuminate the ever-changing game and the money that football is built upon.

This is evidenced by Rice's cross-London transfer to the Emirates Stadium, moving for an incredible amount despite clearly being worth the hassle, supercharging the Gunners' title challenge.

Tevez might have had his issues at West Ham, but he was well worth the bother too, hailed for his “monster” ability in front of goal by broadcaster Sam Tighe, and Totally Money's valuation only highlights just how good he was.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tensions have been rife between France and Argentina in recent times, not just due to their match up in the 2022 World Cup final. Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was embroiled in controversy recently after celebrating his country's Copa America win by singing derogatory chants about France's team. Jean-Philippe Mateta then scored the winner on Friday against Argentina to send France to the Olympic semi-finals.

Otamendi told : “It really p*sses me off that players can celebrate, they can enjoy whatever they want, but where the people and family are, and celebrate with them there.

"There was one whose name I don’t even know, who if he wants to celebrate, he should come to us and we’ll sort it out there. But that really pisses me off, that they celebrate with them knowing that there are kids and family, that’s not good.

“One of them went to celebrate on our bench. I didn’t really understand what was happening, but then I realised that he went to celebrate with our people. It’s one thing to celebrate on the field with your people, whatever you want, but I didn’t like that afterwards. It’s up to each person."

"I think it's completely avoidable, it's not a nice image for anyone. We as Argentines know that when we win, we celebrate with our people and when we lose we congratulate the rival and go inside. I think they had something kept for a long time and today they let it out."

Sunderland backed to make “statement appointment” of “tremendous” manager

Journalist Dom Shaw has backed Sunderland to make a “statement appointment” of a “tremendous” manager this summer, as the Black Cats search for a new permanent boss.

Sunderland manager latest

Michael Beale was sacked as manager in February, following a dismal spell that lasted only two months, culminating in just four wins out of 12 matches.

Since then, Mike Dodds has stepped in as interim boss, but things have gone as dreadfully with him at the helm, picking up just a solitary point. He will remain in charge at the Stadium of Light until the end of the season, but then a new permanent manager will surely come in.

Plenty of candidates have emerged as potential options for Sunderland, with former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper linked with the job, having been replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground earlier in the campaign. Highly-rated young Reims manager Will Still has also been a long-time target and rumours linking him with the job are refusing to go away.

There were even rumours of Alex Neil returning to the Black Cats after leaving them to join Stoke City back in the summer of 2022, but it looks as though that ship may have sailed.

Sunderland backed to appoint "tremendous" manager

Speaking in a Q&A for We Are Sunderland [via Sunderland News], Shaw said Cooper would be an ideal choice as Sunderland's next manager:

"After months to prepare, they can’t afford another underwhelming appointment. Could Sunderland tempt Steve Cooper back into the Championship? He did a tremendous job at Nottingham Forest and is a leading light when it comes to working with young players. He’d be a statement appointment."

Cooper would arguably feel like the most impressive realistic appointment by Sunderland in the summer, considering he was only managing in the Premier League recently, not to mention the fact that he won the Under-17s World Cup with England back in 2017, inspiring the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho to glory, among others. Sam Allardyce has also spoken of his admiration for the Welshman in the past, saying of him:

"Steve is one of the only managers to say he has too many players. Dealing with that can distract your focus. You want to keep them all involved and use them if you can and see what they’ve got, but ultimately, it’s a very tough decision. Steve has done an incredible job dealing with these issues as well as getting good results."

The biggest stumbling block for Sunderland could be whether Cooper is willing to drop down a division, instead eyeing up another Premier League job soon, but the Black Cats remain a big club in their own right, and he could see it as an ideal next step in his career.
