Romano – £50,000-per-week Chelsea starlet seen as "important" for Maresca

Fabrizio Romano says a young Chelsea player is seen as "important" by Enzo Maresca's side, as their new head coach decides on his best team for next season behind the scenes.

Maresca's plans at Chelsea take effect ahead of next season

The Italian is preparing for his first full campaign in charge of Chelsea after Stamford Bridge chiefs decided that he was their best option to replace the departed Mauricio Pochettino.

Maresca guided Leicester City to the Championship title and automatic promotion in his first campaign away from Man City's backroom, and the Foxes performances helped to alert Chelsea to their ideal Pochettino replacement.

Chelsea's squad are said to be excited by what Maresca will bring to Stamford Bridge, and the club believe they've landed an "incredible" new head coach.

“Although it’s true several players were disappointed to see Mauricio Pochettino leave, there is already excitement at what Maresca can bring," said journalist Ben Jacobs to CaughtOffside recently.

“Chelsea’s players believe momentum is on their side and Maresca’s favoured 4-3-3 should favour the squad he inherits. Sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley led the process replace Pochettino, whilst co-owner Behdad Eghbali was in London and heavily involved.

“Chelsea feel they have got an incredible manager. The ownership have always looked to the early days of Mikel Arteta, and the patience shown to him, and have even watched Amazon’s ‘All of Nothing’ documentary.

“Chelsea’s leadership team want to be patient, despite Maresca being their fourth permanent manager. The belief is Maresca is the perfect profile: young, progressive, possession based and, of course, a Pep disciple.”

Maresca is believed to have plans for a few of his players already. Indeed, it's been claimed that Cole Palmer could be the focal point of Chelsea's side next season, and Maresca is said to be a real admirer of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Andrey Santos could also be set for a first-team role at Chelsea in Maresca's debut campaign, and an update has now emerged on how Noni Madueke is viewed in west London.

Madueke seen as "important player for Chelsea"

The £50,000-per-week winger has been linked with a move to Juventus and mentioned as a possible makeweight in Chelsea talks to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace.

Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson

However, Romano has told CaughtOffside that Madueke is seen as an "important" player at Chelsea – suggesting Maresca has plans for the 22-year-old after all.

“I’m also aware of a Chelsea rumour involving Noni Madueke and Juventus, but I have no updates on this at the moment," said Romano.

“Madueke is an important player for Chelsea, so there is really nothing concrete on his future so far. We will see if something changes in the next weeks, but for now Juventus are also focused on the Douglas Luiz swap deal with Aston Villa.”

A late brace from Turkish teenage star Kenan Yildiz brought Juventus level over the final 10 minutes of the match in a thrilling game as the two Serie A giants shared a point at the final whistle.

Weah missed roughly one month of action between September and October due to a lower-body injury that also sidelined him through the first international break under Mauricio Pochettino's leadership with the USMNT. He returned to action on Oct. 19 with a cameo off the bench against Lazio, and followed it up with another substitute appearance in the UEFA Champions League midweek in a loss against Stuttgart.

Sunday marked his second start of the season, and notably, both his goals this campaign arrived when handed a start under Thiago Motta.

Man Utd make contact over Euro 2024 star who’d be perfect for Zirkzee

After such an underwhelming 2023/24 campaign on the whole, Sir Jim Ratcliffe now has the opportunity to return Manchester United to their glory days.

In order for that to occur, the Red Devils must be active in the transfer market, and one player they’re looking to secure is Joshua Zirkzee.

Joshua Zirkzee

The Dutch international has become a key target for Erik ten Hag recently, and he currently has a £34m release clause in his contract.

However, United could also look to sign another attacker who would almost certainly be perfect for Zirkzee.

Man Utd want to bolster their attack this summer

As per a report from Sky Sport Italia, via TEAMtalk, Man United are interested in signing Dan Ndoye.

It’s mentioned that the Manchester club have ‘initiated contact’ with Bologna to gather information on the Swiss star.

dan-ndoye-transfer-gossip-everton-basel-demarai-gray-dyche

If the Red Devils discover that he is available for sale, then official talks will begin between the two clubs.

The Italian side will reportedly look to receive a higher figure than their previous valuation of £12m, particularly after his role for Switzerland at the European Championship.

Why Dan Ndoye would be perfect for Joshua Zirkzee

This time last year, Ndoye was trying to make a name for himself back in Switzerland, playing for a Basel side that only finished fifth in the league.

However, fast forward to today, and he has just come off the back of a promising first campaign in the Serie A for Bologna, making 20 starts.

The 23-year-old is a versatile attacker who can play on either flank as well as having the ability to play more centrally, and despite only scoring once in the Italian top flight, he’s making waves at Euro 2024.

Switzerland’s talented youngster has become a key player as they secured qualification to the knockouts, starting each game and scoring against Group A favourites Germany.

However, as you can see from his average stats so far in the tournament, he’s been absolutely fantastic, even boasting similar stats to the likes of Jamal Musiala and Cody Gakpo, as per FBref.

Ndoye is an extremely direct and quick attacker who tends to create opportunities via his dribbling rather than his passing or vision.

Alongside Zirkzee, who’s a technical player himself – with football analyst Ben Mattinson saying that “he’s 6"4 but turns like he’s 5”9" – Ndoye would be able to combine brilliantly, making United’s attack less predictable.

Furthermore, due to Zirkzee’s tendency to drop deeper to get on the ball, as shown by his FBref rank in the top 91% for attacking touches in the mid-third, Ndoye would provide the movement in behind to stretch the pitch and allow the Dutch ace to work his magic.

Manchester United transfer target Joshua Zirkzee in action in Serie A.

The Bologna number 11 is also excellent on the counterattack, with ball-carrying being one of his biggest strengths, as shown by his progressive carries and carries into the penalty area.

Yet, the main reason why he’d be perfect for Zirkzee is the fact that they worked together all last season at Bologna, so their understanding of each other's game will already be developed.

Overall, it’s clear that the "highly talented" Ndoye, as called by football scout Antonio Mango, has all the attributes needed to thrive at a club like Man United, and all that he needs is an environment that will promote his growth as a player.

On the other hand, Barcelona bring along one of the world’s most talked-about teenage talents and a European Championship winner in Yamal. However, Maksimovic appears undaunted by the challenge of facing off against Yamal and Barcelona and instead views it as an opportunity to cement his place among Europe’s top young prospects.

  • WHAT MAKSIMOVIC SAID

Speaking ahead of the match, Maksimovic told reporters: "We met up at the European Championship. A brilliant player, as well as [Pau] Cubarsi. We’re the same age, tomorrow I’ll go out and show that I’m better than him [Yamal]."

When asked if he felt any nerves or fear about the highly anticipated European encounter, Maksimovic dismissed the notion and said: "Of course, I’m not nervous, this is what I’ve been waiting for. This is the Champions League, this is our stadium. The stands will be full and I’m glad I’ll be playing against the great Barcelona."

Liverpool lining up £45m “machine” who’d be their best DM since Fabinho

Liverpool are biding their time in the transfer market this summer after anointing Arne Slot as Anfield's new head coach. We all want signings but patience is a virtue in this case, with the Dutchman currently working on familiarising himself with his highly talented squad.

Sporting director Richard Hughes has hinted that moves will be made but not until later down the line, although an enticing opportunity will always succeed in setting FSG heads a-swivel.

Slot has inherited a wonderful squad with high-level players across every position, but there are areas to be reinforced and landing a specialist defensive midfielder has got to be one of the Merseysiders' most pressing concerns.

Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

Liverpool signed Wataru Endo from Stuttgart for £16m last summer after missing out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea, and while the Japan international, 31, has done well, he's lacking in mobility and high technical acumen.

Such a deal was necessary to combat the departure of Fabinho, who was sold to Al-Ittihad for £40m in July 2023 after falling by the wayside at the end of his illustrious Reds career. If the right player comes along, Michael Edwards and FSG will be sure to pounce.

Liverpool transfer news

As per GIVEMESPORT, Liverpool are actively looking to strengthen in the middle of the park and could forge a bid for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who was instrumental in the Serie A side's Europa League triumph last term.

Ederson is one of Atalanta's most prized possessions but has admitted on several occasions that he would be tempted by a move to the Premier League, so the ball is really in the Reds' court, for they only need to present the Italian outfit with an offer.

Atalanta value the 25-year-old at £45m, which could make him an affordable addition to complete a dynamic midfield.

Ederson's 2023/24 season in numbers

Ederson has completed 90 appearances for Atalanta since signing from Serie A rivals Salernitana in 2022, with his exploits last season putting him on the map.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson

A defensive midfielder but boasting a sweeping skillset that scoffs at the notion of being pigeonholed into one role, Ederson has properties that suggest he could make a significant impact in Slot's Liverpool squad.

He featured 53 times during Gian Piero Gasperini's triumphant 2023/24 campaign, and it was his indefatigable presence that supercharged the journey toward silverware, averaging 5.2 ball recoveries per game in Serie A and 5.7 per game in the Europa League (Sofascore).

Moreover, he was described as a "machine" in central midfield by football writer Carlo Garganese for his performance against the indomitable Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final.

Xabi Alonso's German club capered their way toward an invincible domestic campaign, winning the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal, though eternal footballing immortality was chipped by Atalanta's 3-0 demolition over them in the final of the continental contest, severing a record 51-game unbeaten streak and ending their own 61-year conquest for a trophy.

Ederson is a star on the cusp of his prime with a proven track record of exceeding expectations, and given that there is no one in the Liverpool squad quite like him, he must be signed. He would surpass Endo and prove to be Liverpool's finest defensive midfielder since the days of Fabinho.

Why Liverpool need Ederson

"He's a machine." Jurgen Klopp beamed toward the glare of the reporters' cameras after injury-riddled Liverpool rallied to beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, commenting on Endo's tireless performance in the engine room.

Liverpool's Wataru Endo.

The experienced ace has no question been a shrewd signing but he has his limitations and Ederson would counter such flaws and then some, surpassing him in activeness quite significantly.

Indeed, as per FBref, the Brazil international ranked among the top 17% of midfielders in Serie A last season for goals, the top 6% for progressive passes, the top 12% for tackles and interceptions and the top 13% for blocks per 90.

The table above highlights the 6 foot 1 Ederson's goalscoring instinct defensive superiority and athletic robustness, though Endo, in fairness, was a crisper distributor last term, albeit playing in a system at Liverpool that enhanced his ball-playing ability.

The same would happen for Ederson, with Slot actually implementing a more ball-centric style than his Liverpool predecessor. He could serve to emulate the best days of his compatriot Fabinho, who was actually hailed as "the best" defensive midfielder in the world by Gary Neville in 2019.

Fabinho completed 219 appearances for Liverpool and played a crucial part in the trophy-laden stint in the club's rich history, notably winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

A relentless tackler and an intelligent reader of the game, the 30-year-old titan was the glue that held it all together, positionally perfect and incisive in recycling possession, turning over the ball and stroking it forward to create advantageous situations.

Former Liverpool midfielder Fabinho

With an average of 6.8 ball recoveries per 90 across the duration of his career, he was energetic and enterprising both, and the difference in control that has been felt over the past few years (he was nowhere near his best at the end of his Reds career, described as "awful" by pundit Jamie Carragher).

Liverpool simply have to sign Ederson, he's affordable and he'd make a marked difference on Slot's start to life in Merseyside.

Perfect for Larsen: Wolves could land "superstar" Sarabia upgrade

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a decent start to their transfer business this summer, but might it get even better?

Gary O’Neil has added plenty of youth to his squad, with Pedro Lima, Tommy Doyle, Rodrigo Gomes and Jorgen Strand Larsen all joining the Old Gold.

Some experience is required, however, and the Molineux outfit have been offered the chance to sign a South American sensation.

Wolves could sign a two-time Champions League winner

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey earlier this week, the club have been offered the shock opportunity to sign James Rodriguez on a free transfer following his departure from Brazilian side São Paulo with a year left on his current contract.

James Rodriguez for Colombia.

The two-time Champions League winner would be a wonderful addition to the squad, especially if he can replicate his recent Copa América form, allowing O’Neil to form a solid partnership with the Colombian and Larsen next term.

Why James Rodriguez could be an upgrade to Pablo Sarabia

The Spaniard enjoyed a solid season during 2023/24, scoring four times and grabbing ten assists in 36 appearances. The 32-year-old is entering the final year of his current deal, might it be time to cash in on the forward?

Rodriguez has failed to really shine in Brazil, but during his spell with Olympiacos in the 2022/23 season, he scored five times and registered six assists, showcasing his attacking abilities.

Surprisingly, it is his passing ability which could stand him apart from Sarabia. Across the men’s next 14 leagues, Rodriguez ranked in the top 1% for passes attempted (70.93) and for progressive passes (9.37) per 90 when compared to his positional peers.

Sarabia, on the other hand, ranked in the top 15% for passes attempted (50.34) and the top 16% for progressive passes (5.62) per 90 when compared to his own positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, which clearly shows that the Colombian would be a major upgrade with regard to these metrics.

Hailed as a “superstar” by journalist Nico Cantor following his Copa América displays for Colombia, he would be a perfect signing to get the best out of Larsen next term.

Indeed, the 5 foot 10 sensation was the catalyst in Colombia reaching their first continental final since they won the competition in 2001, scoring once and registering an impressive six assists.

The 33-year-old also created six big chances, averaged 3.3 key passes per game and averaged 1.3 shots per match, rolling back the years to shine for his country at the tournament – having previously chalked up ten goals and assists in the league during his solitary season at Everton back in 2020/21.

He even ranked first out of all the players at the competition with regard to Sofascore rating, goals and assists and key passes per game, outshining Lionel Messi in these performance metrics.

Still a real creative threat, if O’Neil can offer him the freedom which Colombia did during the Copa América, Rodriguez will be able to create plenty of chances for Larsen during the 2023/24 campaign, without a shadow of a doubt.

The latter man – who joined from Celta Vigo on an initial loan deal earlier this summer – will be hoping to maintain the momentum he built last season in Spain after scoring 13 goals in 37 LaLiga games, with having a player of the Colombian's ilk behind him likely to be a major benefit.

Jorgen Strand Larsen for Celta Vigo.

Whether the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich man ends up at Molineux is another matter entirely, but what a coup it would be for the Old Gold.

Talks held: Spurs move to sign £50k-p/w "monster" who’s like Kulusevski

The Premier League is just over two weeks away, and while Tottenham Hotspur have looked good so far in pre-season, they still need to strengthen to ensure Ange Postecoglou can lead them up the table this year.

The club have been linked to a plethora of talented players this summer, from Eberechi Eze to Jonathan David, but at the moment, the only signings Daniel Levy and Co have made have been Archie Gray and Yang Min-Hyeok.

However, that could be about to change, as recent reports have revealed that the club are making progress towards signing an incredibly talented attacker who has been compared to Dejan Kulusevski in the past.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Transfers, Tottenham have maintained their interest in Pedro Neto and have 'intensified their efforts' to secure his services this summer.

Pedro Neto for Wolves

The report claims that the Lilywhites have now held further talks with the winger, who remains high on Postecoglou's wish list this summer.

A potential fee for the £50k-per-week star is not mentioned in the story, but previous reports from this month indicate that he could cost as much as £50m to £60m.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto

From a purely financial perspective, that might be too high a fee for Spurs to stomach, but considering how talented Neto is, maybe Levy and Co should splash the cash a little bit on this one – his comparison to Kulusevski is just a nice bonus.

Why Neto would be a great signing and his comparison to Kulusevski

Okay, so before we look at Neto's impressive output and why he'd be so good for Spurs, let's first examine this comparison to the Lilywhites' Swedish international and where it came from.

Dejan Kulusevski.

Well, aside from their obvious positional similarity, this comparison stems from FBref, which compared all attacking midfielders and wingers in the 2022/23 Premier League season, created a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and concluded that Kulusevski was the most similar to the Wolves ace in the entire competition that year.

The way they came to this conclusion is by looking at their underlying numbers and then comparing how closely they rank in several key metrics, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive carries, passing accuracy, crosses into the penalty area, through balls, goal-creating actions, tackles won, clearances and carries, all per 90.

However, while it's a nice bonus and interesting to think about, Levy and Co are obviously not going to base their decision to sign the Portuguese star soley on his similarity to the former Juventus ace. Instead, they'll focus on his impressive form last season.

For example, in just 24 appearances for the Old Gold, the Viana do Castelo-born "monster", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, found the back of the net on three occasions and provided 11 assists for his teammates, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.71 games.

Moreover, this haul of 14 goals and assists would have made the 24-year-old the fourth most productive Spurs player last season, despite the lack of games he played. This brings us to the one significant drawback in signing him: his fitness, or lack thereof.

Across the entirety of last season, the former Lazio winger missed 23 games for club and country, and while that is certainly something to consider, the upside of him moving to Tottenham is that, with the brilliant wide talent already at Postecoglou's disposal, he may well get more time to rest, thus minimising his injury risk.
