After scoring and assisting in Como's 2-0 win over lazio to top the Serie A standings by the end of Sunday, demonstrating just why clubs are keen on having him, Paz denied paying any attention to the transfer market in recent months. He is, the player says, purely focused on spending 2025-26 with Como and not actively looking to leave.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tottenham turned onto Paz after Arsenal hijacked their attempted capture of Eberechi Eze. But after seeing an opening offer rejected, Spurs were also rebuffed with a significantly improved €70 million (£61m/$82m) bid. Real Madrid have a matching rights clause this summer and a €10m (£9m/$12m) buyback clause that becomes active next summer, with the player thought to want to head back to the Bernabeu in the long-term.

  • WHAT PAZ SAID

Asked about his future after the win over Lazio, Paz replied, via : "The transfer market? I didn't listen to anything, I stayed focused on preparing for the season. Let's hope everything goes well and that we can reach the highest possible level."

Team-mate Lucas da Cunha said: "It's not my place to talk. I'm very calm, I know he's very happy. He dreams of becoming a top player, he has to keep going like this, with matches like this."

    WHAT NEXT FOR SPURS?

After missing out on Eze, and having James Maddison ruled out long-term, Spurs are running out of time to boost their 'number 10' depth and cover. The club is also in the market for a centre-back, identifying Bayer Leverkusen's Piero Hincapie, but have seen Arsenal again jump in. The Premier League transfer window closes on September 1, in a week's time.

'I'm sorry' – Thomas Tuchel apologises to Jude Bellingham over 'repulsive' jibe

England boss Thomas Tuchel has apologised to Jude Bellingham after describing some of his on-field actions while on international duty as 'repulsive.'

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Three Lions boss caused a stir back in June after heaping praise on Bellingham's fiery and, at times, aggressive style of play, but finished by saying that his mother would consider the Real Madrid star's actions "repulsive". Tuchel revealed he spoke to Bellingham straight after it happened and explained how the mistake came about. He pointed out that he conducts his press conference interviews in his second language, hence some translation issues.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The comments came following the demoralising 3-1 home defeat by Senegal and Tuchel has emphasised there is no issue between him and Bellingham. With a World Cup looming on the horizon, Tuchel needs his key players on side for the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

  • WHAT TUCHEL SAID

Tuchel said: "I used this word unintentionally, just to make it very clear. I had no intention, there was no message, there was no hidden agenda. I fully understand it’s my responsibility that I created these headlines. I’m sorry for the upset and for the headlines that I created. I’m experienced enough, I should have known better and should have done better. I thought I have a little bit more credit with you guys, that I do all this in my second language. I did it on the morning after a loss and not a lot of sleep. I did it in a live interview and I used the wrong word. It’s my responsibility. I used the wrong word. I didn’t want to use this word. I used it. I created the opposite. It’s my responsibility. I made straight away contact with him, of course and I got in touch with him straight away. Jude’s focus is now in his rehabilitation.”

Lionel Messi's top 10 Argentina moments – ranked

GOAL picks the most magical and meaningful goals, assists and performances of the GOAT's international career

And now, the end is near, with Lionel Messi almost certainly set to bring the curtain down on his illustrious Argentina career at next summer's World Cup, which will be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Of course, we thought that the Albiceleste captain would retire after leading his country to glory in Qatar in 2022 – but Messi had so much fun playing under Lionel Scaloni that he decided to continue.

However, it won't be long now before the diminutive No.10 walks away from the international arena, so as he prepares to play the final World Cup qualifiers of his illustrious career, GOAL has picked out Messi's 10 most memorable moments representing his country at senior level, from announcing himself on the world stage in 2006 to claiming the game's most prestigious prize 16 years later…

  • AFP

    10Dream debut

Despite missing the final few months of his breakout season at Barcelona through injury, Messi was included in Argentina's 2006 World Cup squad and football fans all across the globe couldn't wait to see the teenager make his tournament debut in Germany.

Messi spent the entirety of his country's opener against Ivory Coast on the bench, but he came on in the closing stages of the matchday-two meeting with Serbia and Montenegro – and immediately made his mark on the game's grandest stage.

During a sensational 16-minute cameo, Messi scored one goal and created another with a delighted Diego Maradona watching on from the stands at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen. "He's not just good," the iconic No.10 said of the kid he anointed his heir, "he's special."

    9Great group stage

After netting on his World Cup debut, Messi would remarkably have to wait eight years for his second tournament goal, as South Africa 2010 was a disaster for both the Barcelona superstar and Maradona, who parted company with Argentina shortly after the humiliating 4-0 quarter-final loss to Germany.

Consequently, Messi was under intense pressure to deliver in Brazil 2014, and although the Albiceleste's campaign ended in agony, their No.10 began brightly.

'' scored the decisive second goal in the 2-1 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina, after a delightful bit of precise play on the edge of the penalty box, and even better was to follow on matchday two, with Messi breaking Iranian hearts with a stunning injury-time winner struck from wide on the right-hand side of the box.

The attacker then put the seal on a fantastic group stage from a personal perspective by scoring two more goals in the 3-2 win over Nigeria – the second of which was a stunning free-kick.

    8Landmark appearance

Argentina's 2022 World Cup last-16 clash with Australia was Lionel Messi's 1000th game as a professional. Unsurprisingly, he marked the occasion with a typically mesmerising performance.

"A special player to watch," Socceroos midfielder Keanu Baccus said of Messi, who opened the scoring in Argentina's 2-1 win with a wonderfully precise finish from just inside the area.

"He looks fake on the field, he looks a bit like a wax statue, to be honest. It’s surreal how good he actually is and how he watches the game, sees the game and takes it on himself. It's very special because not many people can do that, so I was trying to watch over my shoulder just to see where he was and what he was doing all the time."

    7Brilliance against Brazil

Argentina's meeting with Brazil in East Rutherford in June 2012 may have only been a friendly, but it was a hugely significant game for Messi, who produced the kind of devastating display that his countrymen had been awaiting for some time.

The fact that it came against Argentina's biggest rivals made it all the more meaningful. As Messi said after hitting a hat-trick in a thrilling 4-3 win, "It's always beautiful to beat Brazil, and I'm very happy with my three goals."

The first two were both fine finishes, but the third, which decided the game in Argentina's favour, was the pick of the bunch, with Messi picking up the ball in midfield before driving forward and unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the Brazil net.

"No one in the world has found a solution to Messi," Selecao coach Mano Menezes pointed out afterwards. "He had four chances and scored three goals…Against some players, you cannot give them any space at all."

As for then-Albiceleste coach Alejandro Sabella, he simply said, "We're lucky Leo's Argentine!"

Liverpool to miss out on Marc Guehi again?! FIVE clubs looking to take advantage of Crystal Palace captain's collapsed Reds move

Liverpool might reportedly miss out on Marc Guehi again as five clubs are looking to take advantage of the Crystal Palace captain's contract situation. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guehi’s contract at Selhurst Park runs out next summer, and with no appetite to pen fresh terms, the collapse has opened the floodgates for Europe’s elite. Foreign suitors can begin talks from January 1, placing Premier League rivals at a disadvantage in the race to secure his services. As a free transfer, Guehi would not only command a bigger salary package but also a sizeable signing bonus, making him an irresistible prospect for the continent’s top sides.

According to German champions Bayern Munich are the latest powerhouse to throw their hat into the ring, keen to strengthen their defensive ranks with Guehi’s commanding presence. Meanwhile, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are monitoring closely, each eager to snap up the England international on a free next summer. Italian heavyweights Inter Milan and Juventus are also hovering, ready to exploit the situation and tempt Guehi with a Serie A adventure. With five of Europe’s biggest names in the hunt, Liverpool’s hopes of an uncontested return for the defender appear slim.

Guehi himself had reportedly made his position crystal clear: he was open to joining Liverpool immediately, but if the move did not happen, he would see out his contract and leave for free. That stance has all but ruled out fresh negotiations over a new Palace deal, leaving the south London club facing the prospect of losing their captain without a fee. For Guehi, the collapsed move is simply a delay in his career trajectory rather than a derailment. He is aware of the financial rewards and broader options available as a free agent, but Liverpool remain firmly in his thinking.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Speaking to Racing Tipster, former France and Chelsea star Florent Malouda praised Barca and Spain's young winger but resisted the temptation to hype him up too much. He said that comparing the 17-year-old to Messi and Ronaldo is "too much right now" and emphasised the importance of not "erasing his own personality".

  • WHAT MALOUDA SAID

Asked what Yamal needs to do to reach the level of Messi or Ronaldo, Malouda said: "That's too much right now, and that's also in a kind of way erasing his own personality. He’s probably inspired by a mix of both, but you can see has his own touch. He has his own personality. Of course he’s still young, but so experienced. I’m not sure that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi did what he did at his age. Now it's more about longevity and how he not only maintains this level but improves. We will be able to compare the three players if he sets goals to achieve and is able to maximise his talent. He should not be just happy with what he's doing because now it feels like he's comfortable. If he sets himself a high standard that matches his talent, I think he can be compared to those two, who are in a league of their own. But there’s a lot of years and games ahead of him to confirm he can meet his potential."

  • AFP

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Malouda's comments come in the wake of a gut-wrenching Champions League semi-final defeat for Barca and Yamal, who has been a hugely influential performer for Hansi Flick's side this campaign but ultimately could do nothing to stop Inter's stunningly dramatic advance to the final.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, the path to a deal is far from straightforward for the Bianconeri. Napoli are not keen on strengthening a direct domestic rival and are expected to demand a significantly higher fee from Juventus than from foreign clubs when Osimhen returns from his loan spell at Galatasaray. This is largely due to the structure of Osimhen’s release clause, which stands at €75m (£64m/$85m) but is reportedly only applicable for teams outside Italy. This hands a major boost to the English giants who have a long-standing interest in Osimhen.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Americans Abroad: Weston McKennie and Juventus secure UCL spot, while Christian Pulisic and AC Milan win to end otherwise dismal season

GOAL US takes a look at how Americans Abroad fared in the final fixtures of the 2024-25 season, with both Pulisic and McKennie in wins

It's all calmed down, at this point. A few months back, everything was on for Americans in Europe. Milan were still in the European hunt. Fulham could have squeezed into the Conference League. Bournemouth had a shot. Juventus were flailing.

Well, so much for the drama. Everything has sort of regressed to the most middling results possible. Milan faded late, and won't play European football, and most of the current conversation around Christian Pulisic is the fact that he's giving himself a summer off. Antonee Robinson's Fulham and Tyler Adams' Bournemouth ended up reflecting what they really are – slightly overperforming mid-table teams with not quite enough quality (or money) to make it into Europe.

Juve made it a bit more exciting on the final day, almost throwing away a Champions League spot before a loanee gave a penalty to his parent club and effectively gift-wrapped it for them. But even then, no Americans had any massive impact in that fixture, with both Weston McKennie and Tim Weah coming on as late subs.

It's not exactly tantalizing ahead of next season. But there's a Gold Cup to play in the meantime for some, and a Club World Cup for others.

Juve barely secure Champions League football

It really didn't have to be this complicated. The Serie A title race brought fireworks, with Inter and Napoli kicking off concurrently in two separate title deciders. Napoli clinched things in the end – and never really looked like losing.

Meanwhile, in the race for fourth place, Juve insisted on making it hard for themselves. In fairness, Venezia were always going to put up a fight, needing a win and a favorable result elsewhere Sunday to ensure that they avoided relegation.

And early on, they might have done it. Even without U.S. international Gianluca Busio in the middle, they took the lead. But Juve, with Weah and McKennie watching from the bench, worked their way back into the game, and avoided a late scare to scrape a 3-2 win that was far more dramatic than it perhaps should have been.

McKennie and Weah both saw the pitch in the end, but mostly served as late legs to see things out with Juve well in control of the match. It marked a bit of an underwhelming end to the season for the duo, who will certainly hope to get further opportunities at the Club World Cup. At least they are both well-placed to play Champions League football next year.

Busio was injured in Venezia's warmups and missed the crucial clash. His side were relegated in their Serie A return.

    Milan mercifully end miserable season

So much for injury, right? Christian Pulisic was supposed to be out of contention for the rest of the season after withdrawing from the USMNT's Gold Cup squad. There were whispers that a chronic hip flexor issue has been bugging him all season, and he had been valiantly playing through the pain. That may be true, and he may need time off.

But he didn't do his PR campaign any favors by playing for Milan this weekend after opting out of the main national team competition. In fairness, it was a walk in the park for Milan, who have seldom looked so convincing.

Pulisic, for his part, offered all of the in-between stuff without finding the killer ball needed to really break things open. Indeed, Joao Felix played hero for Milan, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-0 win. Pulisic will now get a few months off to fix whatever, exactly, needs fixing.

Yunus Musah was handed a look, and didn't do loads with it, tallying 25 touches in 45 minutes before being subbed at half time. He's one who could perhaps do with a move this summer.

    Heartbreak in the Pokal

Who would have thought that the best story in German soccer would be a former University of Maryland midfielder who couldn't make it in the New York Red Bulls academy? Mael Corboz and German third tier Arminia Bielefeld were one of football's greatest fairytales in recent years, beating four Bundesliga teams en route to the DFB-Pokal final – including Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen.

Many hoped – if not expected – them to get the job done in the final on Saturday. But it wasn't meant to be, and they were fairly handily beaten, 4-2, by Stuttgart. Corboz played all 90 minutes in center midfield during the game.

But there was some good news for the German side, who topped the third division thanks to a late season run, and will play in the 2. Bundesliga next year. Whether they stay up remains to be seen, but a club that played in the top flight for 19 seasons is certainly back on the way where it should be – with an American at the center of it all.

PCB terminates Haris Rauf's central contract for not committing to Australia tour

Fast bowler will also not be granted an NOC to participate in any overseas league until June 30

Danyal Rasool15-Feb-2024The PCB has come down hard on fast bowler Haris Rauf, who made himself unavailable for Pakistan’s Test series against Australia late last year, by terminating his central contract. In a statement released by the PCB, the board said a hearing was conducted following Rauf’s decision to not participate in the three-match series, and that “the views of all stakeholders” was considered.Rauf will also not be granted an NOC to participate in any overseas league until June 30, 2024. ESPNcricinfo understands this punishment does not extend to Rauf being omitted from the national side; to the contrary, the PCB want him to be available for all international commitments during this time. The focus of the hearings concerned the lead-up to Pakistan’s tour of Australia, where they were scheduled to play three Tests. When chief selector Wahab Riaz announced the squad, he said Rauf had reneged on an earlier commitment to be available for that series, criticising him for going back on his word and saying it would “hurt Pakistan cricket”.Related

ESPNcricinfo understands Rauf viewed that exchange very differently, claiming he had never confirmed his availability, and stating he wanted to take care of his body and prioritise white-ball cricket. However, it would appear that that argument did not cut through with the board in the hearing that followed.”The PCB management provided a chance for a personal hearing to Haris in compliance with the principles of natural justice on 30 January, 2024, and his response was found unsatisfactory,” the PCB said. “Playing for Pakistan is the ultimate honour and privilege for any sportsperson. Refusal to be part of Pakistan’s Test squad in the absence of any medical report or justifiable reason is a material violation of the central contract.”Pakistan did find themselves devoid of high pace during the series against Australia. Shaheen Afridi hasn’t yet recovered to hit the speeds he did before his knee injury in the final of the T20 World Cup in 2022, while Naseem Shah and Mohammad Hasnain were also out with long-term injuries over the winter. In the event, the difference between Pakistan and Australia’s fast bowlers’ pace was clear, and the visitors were clean swept 3-0.The decision to refuse Rauf an NOC till the end of June is more a rhetorical expression of the PCB’s dissatisfaction than a material disadvantage to the player. The PSL, which begins on February 17 – and which Rauf will play – extends till March 18, and Rauf would regardless not have been a part of the IPL, which follows the PSL.The T20 Blast in England does start in May, but Rauf’s commitments with the national side in England, where Pakistan will be playing a white-ball series, would have precluded his participation anyway. The T20 World Cup begins in June, and extends beyond the end of the month, when the restriction on Rauf’s participation in overseas tournaments lapses. It is not yet clear if Rauf has any avenues of appealing the decision. He has been approached by ESPNcricinfo for comment.

Shreyas Iyer: 'Leaving the ball would bore me'

The India batter has a style of play and he wants to stick to it

Vishal Dikshit15-Jan-2024Shreyas Iyer is going to play attacking cricket whatever the situation. The India batter returned to Ranji Trophy after a gap of five years to prepare for the five-match Test series against England starting next week, and warmed-up with a run-a-ball 48 in Mumbai’s 10-wicket win against Andhra at home.Iyer batted at No. 5 in the only chance he got in the game, on the first day, and even though the Andhra quicks bowled “negative” to him by going around the wicket and pitching it short at times, he was not bothered. Iyer flicked the full deliveries, pulled the short ones and scored as many as 75% of his runs on the leg side and struck only one of his seven fours on the off side.”I’m going to play attacking irrespective of the situation,” he said after Mumbai’s win. “And also when you bowl negative, when you bowl safe and defensive at the start, you want to score runs and you need to take your team through up to a certain point. So that was my mindset and that’s why stuck with. Yeah, I was happy [with my knock] irrespective of the score.”[As] I said, they were bowling defensive and they didn’t let me play to my strengths. Even though they started with the short balls, I was able to execute them for boundaries and get a lot of runs out of it. Again, they were bowling negative so there was literally no scope to…other than leaving the ball I couldn’t have done much. I knew that leaving the ball would, to be honest, bore me. I would rather go and play some strokes. That’s what I considered at that point of time.”Was he pleased with his shots against the short ball? “I’m happy,” Iyer said succinctly. His strike rate of 101.27 in ODIs and 136.12 in T20Is speak to the way he likes to play, and it’s largely the same approach he has adopted in first-class matches too, by striking at 78.63 even though it reduces to 65.34 in Tests. Iyer could play a crucial role with his attacking game against the spinners if India and England play on turners in the upcoming Test series.Even though it was not a turning track at the BKC Ground in Mumbai, Iyer was content with his progress, fielding for long hours in the heat (there’s no winter in Mumbai), especially after a recurring back injury that kept him out of action for large parts in 2023. He was back in India colours in September and played a key role in the run up to the final of the ODI World Cup.Shreyas Iyer made scores of 0, 4*, 31 and 6 in the two Tests against South Africa•AFP/Getty Images

“It wasn’t a turning track, to be honest, he said. “I’m assuming that we would be getting turning wickets against England. But other than that, it was just for my match fitness, to stay on the field as long as possible, that’s what mainly I was focusing on because especially after my injury it has been tough for me to stick on the outfield for long. So this was great practice for me.”Iyer returned to domestic cricket because he was not picked for the ongoing home series against Afghanistan, India’s last T20 games before the World Cup in June. He isn’t worried about missing time with the national team. His focus is on what’s coming next.”See, right now I’m being in the present,” he said of being dropped from the T20I side. “I’ve finished the match which I was asked to play, I came, and I executed, so I’m happy with what I’m doing. Something that is not in my control, I can’t be focusing on that. Coming here and winning the match was my focus and that’s what we did today.”It’s important to take one match at a time, not think about five-match Test series. The team is only for the first two games. The motto would be to perform in the first two games and then look forward to the rest of the games.”After scores of 0, 4*, 31 and 6 in the South Africa Tests where both matches finished in under three days, Iyer could be competing for a middle-order spot with KL Rahul if India pick a specialist wicketkeeper instead of Rahul because of the challenges of keeping to spinners on turning tracks.”To be honest I just have to think about the three days,” he said in jest. “See, the last two Test matches we played in South Africa it finished in three days. The third day is always important so I just have to focus on the three days and fourth and fifth will follow if it has to.”When asked about the competition for places in the Indian middle order, he said: “It’s fun. I love competition, and when competition is there, you face more challenges. And that’s what I thrive on personally. So I enjoy having competition around because then you can go at each other and also against the opponents to show your talent and skills.”Iyer finished his day on the field by batting on the center BKC pitch for a couple of hours after the game with his coach Pravin Amre while the other players left the ground.Iyer has so far played 12 Tests after a glittering start to his career with a century and half-century on debut against New Zealand in November 2021. He has since struck four more half-centuries, and averages 39.27 from 20 innings.
