Arsenal fans gutted as Alexandre Lacazette is ruled out until October

It looked as though Arsenal would soon be back to full strength.

On Thursday, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney returned to full training, while Rob Holding had also done so earlier in the week. Konstantinos Mavropanos, the only other member of the Arsenal squad recently in the treatment room, is also back with the first-team.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino on course to repeat Champions League mistake

[ad_pod ]After Football London’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold confirmed on Tuesday that neither Serge Aurier nor Danny Rose have travelled for the Champions League clash against Olympiacos on Wednesday, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is already on course to repeat the same mistake that almost cost the club in 2018/19.

The Argentine has been upfront when saying that he is going to utilise his squad and rotate his team for their upcoming European clashes, but it has to be a concern after what happened in Europe’s elite club competition last season.

The north London outfit looked set to be eliminated having only picked up one point from their opening three group games against Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven, before two wins and a draw eventually saw them scrape through to the round of 16.

In their defeat against the former, Pochettino decided to omit previous regulars Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld from the matchday 18 for their opener, with his side conceding two late goals to lose 2-1 at the San Siro.

Next up against Barcelona, the former Southampton boss had to manage without the injured Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Serge Aurier and Mousa Dembele against the La Liga giants at Wembley, in a match which ended 4-2 to the visitors.

Then, against PSV in their third fixture they once again let a lead slip by drawing 2-2 in the Netherlands having seen Hugo Lloris sent off.

Those are three examples of the sorts of things that can happen in this competition and why it should never be taken for granted, as Spurs look to go one better than last year’s final appearance.

That clash against Barca especially surely proves that you should always take advantage of having fit and in-form first-team players at your disposal, even if it may upset those that may not getting a game.

Aurier shone from right-back against Crystal Palace at the weekend in what was his first appearance of the season for Tottenham, yet he finds himself left behind in London for this clash – confusing to say the least given his lack of football and the fact he should be full of confidence.

If Spurs do get off to a bad start against Olympiacos tonight following plenty of rotation, there is no doubt Pochettino will have a lot to answer for.

Man Utd’s "mistake" of not replacing Romelu Lukaku "disappoints" Paul Scholes

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to talkSPORT, Paul Scholes has admitted Manchester United have made a “mistake” in choosing not to replace Romelu Lukaku this summer.

What did he say?

The Belgium international was at the centre of a protracted transfer saga, with Serie A giants Inter battling with rivals Juventus for his signature.

In the end, the Nerazzurri sealed a big-money deal for Lukaku on dead-line day, and United opted not to sign a replacement forward.

Now, Scholes has revealed the club have made a “mistake” with their transfer policy, and questioned the massive amount of faith being placed on Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

He said: “That’s the one thing that disappoints me. He (Solskjaer) obviously knew they were going to sell Lukaku at some point, but not to have a centre-forward lined up seems like a mistake to me.

“Whether they did, whether it dragged on too long from the club’s point of view, I don’t know. They’re going into a season without a centre-forward when it’s a club that is known for its attacking style and had probably four centre-forwards in its heyday. So to go in there with Rashford and Martial, who you’re not quite sure if they’re left wingers or centre-forwards, we don’t know. But I’m sure it’ll get sorted.”

Make-or-break

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to head into the current campaign with a trio of forwards who have an average age of just over 20 years old is a major risk. The Norwegian can proudly sit back and point to his public trust in youth, but it does feel like the United boss is gambling with the club’s season this year.

An immediate return to the riches of the Champions League is absolutely necessary for the Red Devils to land some of their ambitious transfer targets for next summer, like Jadon Sancho.

Relying on Rashford, Martial and Mason Greenwood to fire them towards that achievement is asking an awful lot indeed.

He simply posted a picture with the trophy and used a low-key hashtag.

The 21-year-old Brighton loanee seems to be the unassuming type, and after years of seeing the brash Pontus Jansson at the back, Leeds fans may be happy to see such a quiet and modest player stepping into that role.

No more attitude issues or bans for ranting about the referee – just a young, talented defender going about his business for the good of the club.

Man Utd’s Jesse Lingard labelled "invisible" by Solskjaer’s former teammate

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to TV2, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s former Norway teammate Stale Solbakken has slammed the performances of Jesse Lingard.

What did he say?

Lingard has endured a frustrating calendar year, and has yet to open his goal-scoring account for this season. A section of the Manchester United support have criticised him for his poor form, and now, Solbakken has further poured salt on the wounds.

The former Wolves boss said (as translated by The Daily Mirror): “I can’t remember the last time I saw Jesse Lingard playing a good match, I actually can’t. He is truly an Achilles heel for this United team.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

“He is almost invisible, and when he is subbed out you wonder, did you even see him? And this is not the first time. I don’t see him, I don’t see his personality, I don’t see what he brings to United.

“Seriously I think he is a direct liability to the team because in the position he plays you have to either be good with the ball so you can play in small spaces, otherwise you have to be dynamic and go behind the opponent’s back four from a slightly deeper position, get on second balls on from crosses for example, be a threat round the opponent’s box, have goal nose. I don’t see that he has anything.”

Damning

Talk about kicking a man when he’s down. Solbakken’s brutal verdict on what Lingard offers United is a fresh reminder of just how far the England international’s stock has fallen. As an academy product, the 26-year-old should be the poster boy of the Red Devils’ revolution. A player who has come through the youth sides and gone on to form the heartbeat of the midfield.

Instead, his off-the-pitch activities have pretty much symbolised everything that has gone wrong for him in recent months. A lack of focus and dedication to his craft, and quite understandably, on the receiving end of criticism from some of his own fans. And with players like Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood waiting in the wings, Lingard’s time is perhaps over.

Man Utd fans slam Marcos Rojo after disappointing display against AZ Alkmaar

Just a couple of weeks after lighting up Old Trafford with a failed rabona, Marcos Rojo was given another opportunity to impress for Manchester United on Thursday night.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave the Argentina international a starting spot in the clash against AZ Alkmaar, and the 29-year-old didn’t exactly vindicate his manager’s faith in him.The defender had been linked with a move to fellow Premier League side Everton for the second consecutive year in the summer transfer window, but failed to see a move materialise. And based on this showing, the Toffees may feel they have dodged a bullet. The 6 foot 2 man made no tackles, interceptions or blocks, and lost possession 13 times – the second-most of any United player on the pitch. After seeing Rojo’s poor display, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the Argentine’s performance.Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Many supporters of the Manchester side hammered him for simply not being good enough, with one fan in particular insisting that he is “League One quality at best”.

Some Red Devils fans questioned his technical ability, and pointed to his tendency to clear the ball when under no pressure at all.

Real Madrid fans gushing over Sergio Ramos as he reaches club milestone

There might not be a player more important to Real Madrid than Sergio Ramos.Los Blancos’ 33-year-old captain has led them through thick and thin but he’s also not showing any clear signs of stopping either. So far, he has played a total of 615 games as one of the Galacticos and has even managed to score 85 goals and assist a further 39 in the process. And all of that as the team’s centre-back, which makes the stats even more incredible.Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

But Real have recently shared another great milestone that Ramos has achieved.

The Spaniard has now scored in every season from 2005 until 2019, and upon learning that fact, many of the fans were simply gushing over their club captain, showering him with praise in general and showing their affection.

Many were in awe of the commitment and the energy Ramos gives to the squad and one fan even said that Ramos has done more for Real Madrid than their president, Florentino Perez.

Tottenham fans want to sign Tyrone Mings after he makes England debut

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have called for their club to sign Aston Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings after he made his England debut against Bulgaria on Monday night.

What should have been a memorable occasion for the 26-year-old certainly was, but not for the right reasons as the game in Sofia was overshadowed by racism from certain sections of the home support.

Nevertheless, the defender impressed alongside Harry Maguire at the heart of the Three Lions’ backline, and according to SofaScore he won four of the six duels he faced throughout the encounter, as well as making one clearance, one interception and one tackle in the Bulgarian capital.

Meanwhile, Spurs may well be searching for a new centre-back either in January or next summer, with the contracts of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both expiring then, and with no developments on them potentially extending their stay in north London.

Tottenham supporters were quick to praise Mings, who only joined Villa for in a £26.5m deal during the summer, for his display on Monday, with many urging their club to bring him in.

While one said “sign him in Jan, please Levy”, another said they’d “happily take Mings as a replacement for Toby Alderweireld”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Real Madrid should end transfer interest in Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It seems that the transfer saga between Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur is yet to be resolved.

The two teams were reportedly talking about Christian Eriksen’s potential departure to the Spanish capital in the summer and, according to a recent report from AS, Los Blancos are set to go for the Danish midfielder once again in January.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Now that Eriksen’s contract is on its last legs – it expires next summer – Zinedine Zidane and his troops could get a discount and believe they can snatch their man away from Spurs for only €30m (£27m). Whether Daniel Levy would be willing to sanction such a deal remains to be seen, but with time running out on Eriksen’s contract it appears that it’s Madrid and not Spurs who hold the cards here.

By all accounts, and especially in the modern market, that is definitely a bargain. Not to mention that the same sources suggest Tottenham wanted €80m (£72m) just a few months ago. Real’s patience appears to have paid off.

But looking at Los Blancos’ squad and their current needs, it’s difficult to see where exactly Eriksen would fit in.

After all, Real have a total of seven players who can play in the attacking-midfielder’s role, and those seven are fighting for three spots in the middle of the park.

It seems Zidane wants a Galactico midfielder who can lead the lines but Eriksen does not really have the required profile.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

When it comes to attacking players, Real not only have an abundance of them but they are all mostly young and extremely talented. The likes of James Rodriguez, Isco, Marco Asensio and Brahim Diaz can all do a pretty good job in that position and are already at the club.

For that reason, going for Eriksen when you need a true box-to-box midfielder is not really a good idea, regardless of the cheap price you could get him for.

However, it must be acknowledged that Eriksen is an impactful talent. This season he has averaged 1.8 shots and had 1.6 key passes per game in the domestic league, though that is a notable dip from the 2.4 shots and 2.1 key passes he completed per game last season.

Club president Florentino Perez should definitely reconsider his choice and go for a player who can offer him something the team is missing.

The Danish midfielder, for all his brilliance, is a type of player Real Madrid already have in abundance and have no actual need of anymore.

Wolves’ predicted starting XI vs Slovan Bratislava

Wolves head to Slovakia later this evening to face Slovan Bratislava as they look to build on their Europa League triumph over Besiktas last time out.

The hosts currently top Group K after picking up four points across their first two matches.

Domestically, Nuno Santo’s side have turned a corner by going unbeaten in their last six games in all competitions.

Are Gareth Southgate’s Aston Villa roots the reason behind the Wolves player in the video below being overlooked?…

Strangely, despite having a stadium ban, Wolves and Slovan Bratislava will battle it out in front of a full house as, under UEFA regulations, children under the age of 14 are allowed free entry with over 15,000 now expected in attendance.

But Nuno faces other worries as an injury crisis has struck following their 1-1 draw with Southampton at the weekend, leaving his squad worse for wear.

Portuguese winger Diogo Jota made his comeback from injury on Saturday as a substitute when replacing Patrick Cutrone just after the hour mark.

Nuno wouldn’t have wanted to rush the 22-year-old back into action, but he may well have to feature at the national stadium.

Both centre-back Ryan Bennett and Ruben Neves were forced off through injury against Southampton, adding to Pedro Neto, Romain Saiss and Morgan Gibbs-White on the sidelines.

Reverting back to the 3-4-3 system would see Wolves cope best in their absence as their only two fit senior midfielders can feature in Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker.

This also hands a place at right wing-back for Matt Doherty with Adama Traore playing behind Raul Jimenez in the attack.

The Portuguese manager is left with no option but to play Jesus Vallejo and Conor Coady together with Bennett potentially out.

It’s either that or he calls on the inexperience of Max Kilman, which isn’t out of the realms of possibility as the 22-year-old’s only appearance this season was against Pyunik in the qualifiers.

The rest of the squad should remain much the same, provided the players have made the trip unscathed and that everyone has remembered their passport.
