Can Pakistan overcome off-field noise against Southee-led New Zealand?

Big picture

New Zealand are ok. Yeah, they’re going through “a transition”. Yeah, they’ve got a new Test captain. Yeah, they have lost six of their nine Tests in this World Test Championship cycle. Yeah, they were the first guinea pigs in the Bazball experiment. Yeah, they haven’t played a single Test since then. But they are New Zealand. This just doesn’t sound drastic, right? It never does. They’ll plan, they’ll nurture, they’ll be efficient and optimal with their resources, play their cards right, quietly bide their time and be good again, and we’ll be like, yeah, New Zealand are ok. It’s just a matter of time.Related

  • Shahid Afridi named interim chief selector of Pakistan men's team

  • Ramiz Raja removed as PCB chairman

On the other hand, Pakistan have gone old-school meltdown and some of us are shouting, It’s About Damn Time. There they were until last week, floating along on a little fluffy cloud of bland, but at least in control of it. Ramiz Raja was in charge, Babar Azam was in charge, the PCB’s social media, where everything – even a historic 3-0 whitewash – was always so positive and upbeat, was in charge.Five days later Shahid Afridi is the chief selector. SHAHID AFRIDI IS THE CHIEF SELECTOR! That’s never not going to take getting used to. A coup’s been staged against Ramiz, and the new guys – who are really the old guys – cut some cake as the first order of business. Babar’s team-mates suddenly are having to tweet their support to him. Nobody’s doing the same for Saqlain Mushtaq, so he is going to go soon. The chief selector is already gone. People are talking about Mohammad Rizwan’s place in the Test side. The fast-bowling cupboard is Shaheen Shah Afridi. That’s it. The domestic system is about to be completely ripped apart. Again. Also, Shahid Afridi is the chief selector and he’s saying straight-laced things like: “We had a good discussion on the squad and agreed we needed to strengthen our bowling department to give ourselves the best chance of taking 20 wickets in a match.”What all of it means for the immediate future of the two Tests these two now play, your guess is as good as anyone’s. Pakistan are hurting, heaving with change. New Zealand are being New Zealand and for added inscrutability haven’t played a Test in yonks. Both are coming off four consecutive losses. At a pinch, let’s say it shouldn’t be boring.

In the spotlight

Mohammad Rizwan is not having a great year. Suddenly, one of the first names on Pakistan’s team sheet is no longer necessarily that, not with a new selection committee in place. His T20I partnership with Babar has come under increasing scrutiny. In Tests, there are calls for the return of Sarfaraz Ahmed to replace him. It’s a little unfair. His glovework may be a little theatrical, but he’s still safer than any of his modern predecessors. He is averaging 30 this year with bat, which isn’t great but isn’t diabolical either. It’s not a string of low scores either, but a series of unconverted starts. Safe to say though that he – and Pakistan’s batting – could really do with him converting one of them.In Asia, Tim Southee has picked up 48 wickets at an average of 25.47•AFP/Getty Images

Suddenly, everyone’s a fast-bowling captain. This summer in England Tim Southee looked cooked, though, in hindsight, that was probably more England’s batting than his bowling. Now, six months later he is New Zealand’s new Test captain, ready to bowl in a continent where he has an exemplary record. Only last year he was putting on a masterclass in Kanpur but this time, he’ll be without his long-time partner-in-swing, Trent Boult. How he goes with ball in hand, and command on the field, will determine how this series goes for the tourists.

Team news

Pakistan had a squad. Then the PCB was overhauled. And three new players were added to the party. Now, as far as Babar is concerned, “We will have a discussion with the selectors; then we will decide the final XI”.Pakistan (probable): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Abdullah Shafique, 3 Shan Masood, 4 Babar Azam (capt), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), 7 Agha Salman, 8 Sajid Khan, 9 Abrar Ahmed, 10 Mir Hamza, 11 Naseem ShahNew Zealand are likely to bolster their spin attack with Ajaz Patel coming in. Trent Boult, of course, is not available.New Zealand (probable): 1 Tom Latham, 2 Will Young, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Devon Conway, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Daryl Mitchell, 7 Tom Blundell (wk), 8 Michael Bracewell, 9 Tim Southee (capt), 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Ajaz Patel

Pitch and conditions

The Karachi pitch for the recent Test against England was slow and low, but not necessarily uneven in contest for it. It’s most likely, given the swift turnaround time, to behave similarly. But who knows, with a new administration in town, it may liven up a little. Babar expects it to “change each day, day by day things get different”.

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan used to love playing New Zealand but since 2011 have only won 3 of their 12 Tests against them and lost seven.
  • 60.40 > 54.77: Babar’s average against Kane Williamson’s since October 2019 (just before Babar’s breakthrough Test series against Australia). A little more surprisingly, he has played ten Tests more than his counterpart in the same period.
  • 71.22 – Daryl Mitchell’s average this year is the third-highest of any batter with at least five Tests.

Quotes

“Yes, we could not play the last series the way we wanted to, because we committed mistakes. Now we need to overcome that and try to play good cricket.”

AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen reach agreement for Victor Boniface transfer after Serie A side pull out of Rasmus Hojlund talks

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Boniface was signed by Leverkusen from Belgian side Union SG for €22m (£19m/$26m). In his first season, he scored 21 goals and provided 10 assists, playing a key role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title win and their run to the Europa League final. His 2024-25 campaign, however, was cut short by recurring injuries, preventing him from helping Xabi Alonso defend the title. In January, he came close to joining Al-Nassr, but the move fell through as the Saudi club chose to sign Jhon Duran instead. His move to Italy will see Leverkusen lose another key figure from Alonso’s title winning side, with Florian Wirtz joining Liverpool, Jonathan Tah moving to Bayern and Granit Xhaka signing for Sunderland, leaving new manager Erik ten Hag facing a complete rebuild.

  • MILAN'S STRIKER PURSUIT

With Santiago Gimenez committing his future to Milan, Luka Jovic leaving as a free agent, and Tammy Abraham returning to Roma after his loan, Milan were left with only one striker in their squad. Massimiliano Allegri tried to reunite with his former player Dusan Vlahovic, who is in the final year of his Juventus contract, but the Serbian is expected to stay in Turin. Milan also made an attempt to sign Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund on loan with an option to buy, but he could be on the way to Napoli instead.

2025 Champions Trophy qualification at stake during ODI World Cup

The top seven sides at the end of the league stage of the ongoing ODI World Cup in India will qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, along with hosts Pakistan, to compete in the eight-team event. An ICC spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved by the ICC Board in 2021, when the competition was brought back as one of the eight men’s global tournaments to be held in the 2024-31 cycle. The development has come as a surprise to a few boards – both whose teams are in India as well as others who missed making it to the ODI World Cup – who told ESPNcricinfo that they were unaware about qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy being at stake in this tournament. At present, Bangladesh and England are at No. 9 and 10 on the ODI World Cup points table, and therefore outside the top seven who will qualify for the Champions Trophy along with hosts Pakistan. “Yeah, I’m aware of that,” England captain Jos Buttler said when asked if he knew a place in the Champions Trophy was at stake following their loss to India in Lucknow. “And absolutely, it just proves we’ve still got lots to play for.”This also means other Full-Member nations like West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland will not even have the opportunity to qualify for the tournament, by virtue of not having made it to the 2023 ODI World Cup.In November 2021, the ICC had unveiled several global events for both men and women in the new cycle (2024-31) including two editions of the Champions Trophy – in 2025 and 2029. In a media statement, the ICC had said that the Champions Trophy would be an eight-team event and the tournament structure “will follow previous editions with two groups of four, semi-finals and final”.For the 2013 and 2017 editions of the Champions Trophy, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings at a cut-off date qualified for the event. It is understood that the decision to have the top seven teams at this World Cup qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved originally by the ICC’s chief executives committee following which the ICC board ratified the recommendation. One Full Member board confirmed that the qualification pathways for all the events were discussed and approved at the 2021 ICC meetings. For the 2027 men’s ODI World Cup, which will be a 14-team tournament co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the qualification process is: the two Full Member hosts – South Africa and Zimbabwe – plus eight highest-ranked teams as of March 31, 2027, and four remaining teams through global qualifier tournaments. The qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy was highlighted this week by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan more than once. With his team almost out of the semi-final race in the ODI World Cup, Shakib spoke of the importance of finishing in the top eight. “I mean, not the semi-final hope. It is not a semi-final possibility,” Shakib said on Saturday, after Bangladesh were beaten by Netherlands. “At least, do a little better. Suppose, you have to be in the [top] ranking 8 if you want to play in the Champions Trophy. So, there are still three matches left considering that in mind.”

Contact made: Man Utd and INEOS make move to sign "talented" £25m forward

Manchester United are believed to have made contact over the signing of a “very talented” attacker in the summer transfer window, following a new update.

Amorim eyeing ideal summer signings for Man Utd

The Red Devils’ season has been a massive disappointment, although there is still a chance for them to rescue it by winning the Europa League in the coming months, which feels possible.

For Ruben Amorim, it has been a baptism of fire since replacing Erik ten Hag as United’s head coach, but he has remained resolute in not moving away from his philosophy. It has become clear that the 40-year-old needs to sign players who could excel in his style of play this summer, and plenty of individuals are being linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimlooks dejected at half time

Victor Osimhen has been mentioned as an exciting target for the Red Devils, with the Napoli striker potentially coming in as part of a swap deal that sees Rasmus Hojlund head the other way at the end of the season. That would feel like an upgrade, with all due respect to the latter.

Meanwhile, United are also said to be in talks to sign Lille striker Jonathan David, who could be a brilliant alternative to Osimhen. The Canadian has once again been one of Ligue 1’s star players this season, scoring 14 goals in the competition, as well as netting seven times in the Champions League.

Man Utd make move to sign "very talented" £25m ace

According to SporTime [via United In Focus], Manchester United want to sign Olympiacos teenager Charalampos Kostoulas this summer.

It is claimed that the Red Devils have contacted the Greek giants over the signing of the attacking starlet, as they look to snap him up ahead of next season.

Charalampos Kostoulas for Olympiacos.

Kostoulas, expected to cost £25m as per the report, may not yet be the world-renowned player that United supporters crave in the next window, but he is a young player who could become a star as the years pass.

Only 17, the striker has already made 33 appearances for Olympiakos, scoring six goals, with eight of those matches coming in the Europa League. He has also been lauded as a “very talented” player by analyst Ben Mattinson, and “one of the biggest” talents by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

United have struggled in attack all season long, with Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scoring a combined six goals in the Premier League, so additions are clearly needed there.

While Kostoulas wouldn’t be coming in as an immediate starter for Amorim’s side, the fact that he is already so comfortable playing senior football, including in European competition, highlights his maturity.

United have been known for signing incredible young talent and turning them into superstars down the years, from Cristiano Ronaldo to Wayne Rooney, and Kostoulas could be seen as the next Old Trafford attacking hero.

Muzumdar, Arothe in shortlist for India women head coach

Amol Muzumdar, Tushar Arothe and Jon Lewis* are among at least five candidates understood to be part of BCCI’s shortlist for the position of head coach of the Indian women’s team. It couldn’t be confirmed if Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the current interim head coach, is part of the shortlist. The BCCI-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is expected to interview the candidates on July 1-2 in Mumbai. This committee, chaired by former India batter Ashok Malhotra, also comprises former India players Jatin Paranjape and Sulakshana Naik. They are likely to assess presentations made by the candidates before an announcement is expected “on or before July 3”.The new coach is likely to be given a two-year term, to begin with. The BCCI is keen on continuity, given two ICC events – the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024 and the 50-over World Cup in India in 2025 – are within this period.Related

The position has been vacant since December 2022, when Ramesh Powar was abruptly removed as part of BCCI’s “restructuring module” two months ahead of the T20 World Cup in South Africa. Since then, Kanitkar has been handed the top job in an interim capacity.Muzumdar, meanwhile, has also been offered the position of head coach of Baroda’s senior men’s team for the 2023-24 domestic season. Earlier, he was the head coach of Mumbai until the 2022-23 domestic season. It’s understood that Muzumdar hasn’t formally accepted Baroda’s offer and is awaiting the CAC’s decision over the India women’s head coach position.Muzumdar has been an active coach since he called time on a 21-year first-class career during which he became one of the highest run-getters in the Ranji Trophy. Following 15 years with Mumbai, Muzumdar moved to Assam in 2009 and later to Andhra. He amassed 11167 runs from 171 first-class matches, with 30 centuries. He went on to win eight Ranji titles with Mumbai. Since his retirement, he has coached age-group sides at the NCA, has been at the helm for Mumbai and has been part of the coaching staff at Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and South Africa [for their tour of India in 2019] briefly.Meanwhile, Arothe, a Ranji Trophy winner with Baroda, has had two stints with India women, most recently between April 2017 and July 2018. In this period, the team finished runners-up at the 50-over World Cup in England. Soon after, he resigned citing “personal reasons” after strained relations with a few senior players who he felt “needed to step out of their comfort zone.”Among the overseas names is Lewis, 53, who played County Cricket for Durham and Essex across a career that spanned 205 first-class matches and 236 List A games. He is the coach of the Trent Rockets in the Women’s Hundred, and was up for the England job as well but that went to a different Jon Lewis. While the BCCI is keen to have the new coach link up with the squad ahead of India’s upcoming tour of Bangladesh in July, it’s likely Kanitkar could be in charge of the squad in a stop-gap arrangement if he isn’t handed the reigns full-time. Kanitkar, the former India allrounder, is an NCA-certified coach and is currently in charge of the Under-19 probables camp in Bengaluru.India women haven’t played international cricket since the T20 World Cup in South Africa in February-March where they were the losing semi-finalists. In May, the BCCI had shortlisted a targeted group of 30 players and put them through a rigorous conditioning camp in Bengaluru.Their next assignment is a limited-overs tour to Bangladesh beginning July 9. The BCB expects the Indian team to arrive in Dhaka on July 6, but the BCCI’s selection committee is yet to name the squad for the tour comprising three ODIs and as many T20Is. It’s understood that the members of the “targeted group” that attended the NCA camp have all been asked to submit their passports for the BCCI to fast-track their visa applications.

Tottenham face AZ Alkmaar in Europa League last 16

Postecoglou could well benefit from the full returns of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke, who have all been missing for weeks, but the Australian was coy over their chances of starting tonight.

“We’ll see, we’ll train today,” said Postecoglou in his latest pre-match press conference. “Obviously they’ve all out for significant amount of time so we’ll see when we reintroduce them but they’re all here and training today, so we’ll make decisions after that.”

Spurs’ boss will be eager to reintroduce as many first-team stars as possible before the next international break, and the Europa League represents their only chance of winning any major silverware in Postecoglou’s second season in charge.

“I think it is fair to say the boys really understand there is a great opportunity for us,” said Postecolgou on the Europa League. I think they’ve appreciated the fact that the guys who have been playing through are now able to recover and train and prepare themselves better for games.

“That’s coincided with seeing their teammates come back and certainly the guys that have been out injured, we’ve already seen with guys like Vic, Brennan, Madders to a lesser extent (due to time out) but Wilson, Destiny, they’ve come back with a real hunger and desire to help the team because I think they’ve all been frustrated to sit on the sidelines and see how difficult it has for the group of players who have been playing. They’ve just wanted to help and now they get that opportunity.

“Again, I think you sense that in the group that they appreciate they have some support and some help. There is a platform there for us to hopefully get back to playing our football and seeing how far we can progress.”

Tottenham open talks with Flamengo defender Wesley Franca

According to RTI Esporte, the Lilywhites are also preparing for next season by making enquiries over key targets, and one of them is believed to be Flamengo defender Wesley Franca.

Wesley Franca celebrates for Flamengo.

As per their information, Tottenham have held talks with Franca’s representatives, but they’re by no means the only Premier League side who are keen on a move for the right-back.

Cross-town rivals Arsenal also made contact with his camp this week, to gauge the conditions of a potential deal, with Franca’s price tag believed to stand at around £29 million.

The 21-year-old, called “exceptional” by ex-Chelsea and Atlético Madrid defender Felipe Luis, can also play as a right-midfielder when required. After claims of Real Madrid interest in Pedro Porro, Spurs have been sporadically linked with a new full-back, and Franca could be an astute option.

Celtic hit the jackpot with "class" £6m signing who’s worth more than Maeda

Celtic have enjoyed so much success both on and off the field at Parkhead in recent years thanks to their player-trading model of buying young players, giving them a platform on which to shine, before selling them on at a profit.

This, as noted by Mark Pirie of the Daily Record, saw the club named the ‘best-run club in Britain’ last year by the Fair Game Index.

However, one player, signed by Ange Postecoglou on the cheap, is still at the club, and remains a key figure in Brendan Rodgers’ side, earning rave reviews.

Ange Postecoglou's biggest successes in the transfer market

When Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic in 2021, as David Hytner of the Guardian puts it, the club was a complete ‘mess… in need of a reboot’ and a mass squad overhaul.

The Australian himself admitted “I was a joke” when he arrived, but defied all expectations by winning five out of six domestic trophies, departing for Tottenham having delivered a treble.

As noted by Callum McFadden of Breaking the Lines, the primary factor behind Postecoglou’s success was his excellent recruitment.

A total of 32 players were signed during Postecoglou’s two-year reign in Glasgow, so here’s a selection of the very best.

Celtic colossal centre-back

When Cameron Carter-Vickers joined Celtic, initially on loan, in 2021, he was surplus to requirements at Tottenham, having made just five appearances for Spurs, one of which had come earlier that summer, starting a Europa Conference League qualifying defeat to Paços de Ferreira that Nuno Espírito Santo did not take particularly seriously.

Nevertheless, north of the border, he’s been invaluable for Celtic, with Postecoglou describing him as “outstanding”, also calling him both a “leader” as well as the “best defender in the league”, hence why his move was made permanent for £6m the following summer.

Overall, the 27-year-old has made 148 appearances in hoops, winning eight major trophies, taking his tally to 18 caps for the United States during this time too, with Graham Ruthven of Total Soccer Show believing his performances in Scotland should make him USA’s first-choice at next summer’s World Cup on home soil.

As the table outlines, when compared to other centre-backs, he ranks highly for both in-possession and out-of-possession statistics, his tackles and interceptions numbers are hampered by the fact Celtic average almost 74% possession in the Premiership this season.

Nevertheless, the American has become irreplaceable in this side, with Rodgers labelling him “top class”, while former U.S. U20s manager Tab Ramos says he has always been impressed by Carter-Vickers “aggressiveness in the air”, underlined by the percentage of aerial duals he wins, ranked third for this metric in this season’s Champions League (minimum 20 duals contested).

His performance against Bayern Munich in Germany last Tuesday led to Alex Barker of the Athletic stating that he was convinced Carter-Vickers to be “the best centre-back outside Europe’s top five leagues”. Fine praise indeed.

According to Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old is now worth more than double what Celtic paid for him, with his value currently at its highest point (£11.5m), reinforcing his status as a bargain signing.

To put that into context, he’s worth more than record-signing Arne Engels (£9m), according to the same source, and worth more than a man who Alistair Johnston believes is “one of the most in-form players in Europe”, Daizen Maeda.

The Japan star is worth £6.5m in the eyes of Transfermarkt, a figure that only goes to prove how great a signing his American teammate has been.

Rodgers has unearthed a new Celtic superstar & it's not Daizen Maeda

The Celtic sensation had more touches than Jota in the win over Aberdeen.
