England expressed concerns over bio-secure integrity, says South Africa team doctor

Dr Shuaib Manjra says CSA respects concern, after cancellation of Cape Town fixture

Firdose Moonda04-Dec-2020England have expressed concerns over the integrity of the teams’ bio-secure bubble in South Africa, leaving the ODI leg of their tour in jeopardy, after a positive test for Covid-19 from the hosts’ camp led to the first ODI being postponed on Friday. The match was called off an hour before the toss and has been rescheduled to Monday, with all players and hotel staff to be retested on Friday evening. However, South Africa have yet to determine how one of their players contracted the coronavirus and, although they maintain their confidence that the bio-secure environment works, a further round of tests scheduled for Friday afternoon may decide whether the three matches are able to go ahead.”There is a cause for concern and England has expressed a concern. England are questioning the confidence they have in the bio-secure environment and rightfully so,” Dr Shuaib Manjra, CSA’s chief medical officer, said.”If there has been a player who tested positive in the last week, they have cause for concern and we respect that concern. We met with the English medical team and we have planned out a way. We will retest all players and hotel staff [tomorrow, later brought forward]. We will await the results and determine a course of action and then on Tuesday before the final ODI we will retest the team again.”ALSO READ: First ODI at Cape Town called off after Covid scareSouth Africa’s players have so far been tested five times, three times before the start of the T20I series which revealed two positive cases, and once in between the T20Is and ODIs. Although CSA have declined to confirm the names due to doctor-patient confidentiality, David Miller and Andile Phehlukwayo are widely understood to be the first two players in question. The first player who tested positive did not enter the bio-bubble and isolated on his own while the second was removed from the bubble when he tested positive two days later. Both players tested negative on the fourth round of tests, just before the start of the T20 series last Friday, and rejoined the squad last Saturday. The third positive case was discovered a week later, from a test before the start of the ODIs yesterday, and CSA is unsure how it came about. Heinrich Klaasen was a notable absentee from Tuesday’s final T20I, with his captain Quinton de Kock stating at the toss that he was sick.”This test surprised us because we have confidence in the integrity of the bio-secure environment,” Manjra said. “Further tests indicate that this is a more recent case that occurred within the bio-secure environment. So clearly there seems to be some kind of breach which we have investigated in great detail to try and determined where this happened. The first ODI between England and South Africa at Cape Town was postponed due to a Covid-19 scare•Getty Images

“We have traversed a couple of different spaces, trying to recount some of the events: speaking to the player, looking at security cameras, looking at other information and we haven’t been able to date to identify where the source was but clearly it’s cause for concern.”The situation is understood to have unsettled the England camp, who have been staying at the same Vineyard hotel as the South Africa squad, albeit in separate wings with mixing between the two squads banned. Communal areas have been used on a rota basis and deep-cleaned between whiles, with the hotel staff also staying on the premises. Outside of travel to matches and practice, the teams’ only other authorised departures from the hotel grounds have been for rounds of golf at Boshenmeer, near Paarl, again subject to strict protocols.England’s 24 players, plus support staff, are due to leave South Africa on a chartered flight on December 10. With the prospect of Christmas at home for some members of the squad, and imminent stints in Australia at the Big Bash for others, there is believed to be a reluctance among the players to jeopardise those plans.A scheduled joint press conference between ECB and CSA was cancelled soon after the match had been called off, with Ashley Giles, the team director, later addressing the situation in a statement.”On behalf of the England touring party and the ECB, I would like to thank Cricket South Africa for their collaborative approach to postponing today’s one-day international,” Giles said.”Our number one priority is the health and safety of the England team and management group, and the correct decision was made following discussions between the two boards and respective medical teams.”The England party will remain at its base in Cape Town on Friday and Saturday, and we are hopeful that the three-match series will be played before we depart next Thursday starting with the match at Paarl on Sunday.”In conceding that a player may have breached protocols, Manjra was adamant that no-one was allowed to leave the team hotel in Cape Town unsupervised.”I can categorically state that there is no player who is able to leave the hotel environment by virtue of the fact that there is security around and the security will not allow the player to leave, unless that player is leaving in an assigned vehicle which is an official vehicle with an official driver,” Manjra said.”There is a command centre here led by the Colonel from the Claremont Police Force and they strictly enforce the bio-bubble. They wouldn’t allow anybody to leave.”ESPNcricinfo

However, earlier on in the tour, players did leave for what appear valid reasons. “In fact some players left as a group to go across to the Oval [across the road from the hotel] to train and that became a matter of concern because they had seen it and we had addressed that concern with the Colonel and the command centre. It is impossible for any player or official to leave this.”That revelation gives credence to Manjra’s suggestion that the bubble is not working as intended. “I am fairly convinced that 99% of the time this environment is working,” he said. “There may be a breach that is unbeknown to us. I am not saying there is zero risk. There may be a slight risk. There are a lot of moving parts in a tour such as this and we are trying to control that.”South Africa’s would not be the first breach of protocols in the new normal. Last month, West Indies’ players were barred from training during their period of managed isolation in New Zealand after sharing food and socialising in hallways, while Pakistan were put on a final warning that they would be sent back home after several similar incidents. Pakistan remain in isolation and have not been granted an exemption to train. This is South Africa’s first experience hosting a bio-bubble – the tour is believed to be worth £3 million to CSA – and they are due for three more this summer, with incoming tours scheduled against Sri Lanka, Australia and Pakistan. It is England’s first time in a bubble away from home, having successfully negotiated their home summer with a series of bio-secure environments.

The statement read: "Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. United have made their worst-ever start to a Premier League season, with Sunday's defeat by West Ham leaving them 14th in the Premier League table after nine games. They have also failed to win any of their three Europa League games, drawing against Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ten Hag was in serious danger of losing his job late last season as United came eighth in the Premier League, their worst finish since 1990. The club spoke to numerous candidates including Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna and Thomas Tuchel but Ten Hag eventually clung on and was given a one-year extension of his contract. It means that United are likely to have to pay an estimated £7 million in compensation to Ten Hag, which could have been avoided in the summer.

Personal terms agreed: Spurs could land new signing who Son would love

The transfer window swung open almost two weeks ago now, and while Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a number of players in that time, not much has changed.

However, in good news for Ange Postecoglou and the fans, for that matter, it looks like that could be about to change.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Based on recent reports, the club are making progress in negotiations for a player who could add some real attacking impetus to the Australian's side, which could help them qualify for the Champions League next season and help club captain Son Hueng-min become even more effective.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Turkish outlet Aslinda, Tottenham have maintained their interest in Fenerbahçe star Sebastian Szymanski and have agreed to personal terms.

Sebastian Szymanski.

The report claims that the attacking midfielder has 'no problems' with the Lilywhites and has agreed to a four-year deal.

The only issue is that the report has revealed that Daniel Levy has already had a €17.5m – £14m offer rejected, and a story via TEAMtalk in January claimed that it would cost the North Londoners around £30m to get their man.

Spurs transfer target Sebastian Szymanski in action for Fenerbahce.

It won't be the cheapest deal to complete, but Postecoglou and the club seem keen to get it done, and considering his campaign last season, it's not hard to see why.

Why Szymanski woud be a great teammate for Son

So, the primary reason Szymanski would be a brilliant teammate for Son is rather simple: his output.

Last season, the Polish international scored 13 goals and provided 19 assists in 55 games for the Turkish giants, a staggering average of a goal involvement every 1.71 games across that significant number of matches.

It would also make him the second most productive player at Spurs, behind the South Korean and ahead of stars like Richarlison, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Alongside his impressive output, the "exceptional playmaker," as U23 scout Antonio Mango dubbed him, has a relatively clean bill of health regarding injuries and missed games.

For example, since the start of the 2019/20 season, he has only missed 15 matches, which works out to three games per campaign. In contrast, the player he'd likely be competing with for a place in midfield, Maddison, has missed a whopping 51 games in the same period, which works out to just over ten a year.

Lastly, the 25-year-old's underlying numbers from his time in the Eredivisie were genuinely impressive.

For example, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across the next best 14 competitions, the "underrated" ace, as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, remains in the top 1% of midfielders for non-penalty expected goals and assists, the top 3% for touches in the opposition's penalty area, the top 4% for expected assists, and the top 9% for total shots and progressive passes received, all per 90.

Essentially, the Fenerbahçe star would bring a level of consistent output to the Lilywhites' midfield, which would, in turn, provide Son with more chances to score and more opportunities to assist.

Ultimately, Szymanski might not be a particularly well-known name to Premier League fans, but based on his form last season and the relatively modest price, he could be a brilliant addition to Postecoglou's progressive Tottenham side.

Crucial hours: Spurs close in on signing £42m star who Maddison will love

The incredible goal “machine” could be the player to fire the Lilywhites back into the top four.

Ricky Ponting's instructions to Delhi Capitals: 'Go easy, not lazy'

Iyer said it was a welcome relief to get back to training after five months of lockdown

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Sep-20203:04

Ricky Ponting: ‘Will make sure we don’t overtrain’

“Go easy, not lazy”.These were the first words from Ricky Ponting, head coach of the Delhi Capitals, as the squad assembled for their first training session in Dubai over a week back. He instructed this over a video call, according to captain Shreyas Iyer, as he was restricted to reviewing footage of the team’s training session for the first few days because of quarantine restrictions.”When we finally got the go-ahead for our very first training session of the season, the excitement was palpable,” Iyer wrote in a column for the Capitals. “Ricky was still in quarantine, which means his opening talk of the season was going to be over a Zoom call. ‘Go easy, not lazy,’ he told us. “‘Slow and steady, short and sharp sessions to start with. And more intense as we go along.’ It’s amazing how much energy he manages to put into us even from across a computer screen.”Iyer felt just being out on the field made him nostalgic after he had spent a better part of the last five months indoors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the seven days of quarantine and the wait to train and play had made him “absolutely restless”, but once he hit the nets, the wait for his turn to bat made him an “impatient child, full of energy.” With Ponting still in quarantine, the Capitals began training under supervision of assistant coaches Vijay Dahiya and Mohammad Kaif.ALSO READ: Shikhar Dhawan: Experience, batting depth of Delhi Capitals spinners a huge advantage”I can’t tell you how much I waited for the day of our first training session,” he wrote. “Before that, we were locked in our rooms for a week. I kept myself occupied with room workouts, as Rajinikanth, our strength and conditioning coach monitored me over a video call. In the evenings, I turned to Netflix.”On the first day of training, I was ready a whole hour before schedule. And once I stepped out, nostalgia hit me. The sight of the green outfield, and the white picket fence at the ICC Academy, our training venue, was a sight for sore eyes. How much we’d all missed this for the past few months.”Kaif , and Vijay had reached before us. And before we knew it, it was officially season time. I am frankly finding it hard to describe the feeling when I put my pads, gloves and helmet on, and walked into the nets. As I heard the sweet, sweet sound of bat hitting ball, I waited for my turn like an impatient child, full of energy.”Iyer admitted to feeling a little uneasy to suddenly train at full intensity in the hot and humid conditions. He said it took him a while to get into the groove but wouldn’t have it any other way after missing out on cricket for the majority of the year.”It wasn’t easy to get into the groove, to be honest,” he wrote. “And the humidity made things worse. But I’d pick this over the hotel’s air-conditioning any day. Two sessions in, I started finding my rhythm back, slowly but surely. You could see the intensity in the nets and the outfield.”The batters tonked the ball all over the park, the fast bowlers steamed in, the spinners got their trick deliveries out. It would be safe to say it was a case of ‘Absence makes the heart fonder’ for all of us. All this time away from the game only made us realise just how much we love it.”

Tom Fell's return to form leads Worcestershire into position of strength

After 54 wickets fell in effectively three days at Wantage Road, batting finally became a little easier on the third afternoon of this second Bob Willis Trophy match in Northampton and Tom Fell made his highest first-class score since 2018 to help move Worcestershire to 177 for 6, leading Northamptonshire by 184.Northamptonshire hoped to give their inexperienced players opportunities in this truncated season but their batsmen have had little opportunity in testing conditions so far at home. Perhaps day four will be their chance and they might be able to deliver victory if the Worcestershire lower order can be removed swiftly in the morning. But with Fell’s smart innings, Worcestershire, who only claimed a first-innings lead of 7, already have a score to bowl at.In 32 first-class games from 2017, Fell has only made four fifties. His Bob Willis Trophy had yielded a trio of promising 30s but this was the score he needed and maybe an innings to get his red-ball career back on track.Fell escaped an early edged drive and survived a run-out chance thanks to Blessing Muzarabani’s poor throw but he settled well, played the most-pleasant of extra-cover drives off Jack White, and shared a second-wicket stand of 67 with Daryl Mitchell, who made 39, that occupied most of the afternoon session as proper technique and patience finally began to be rewarded. After tea, Jack Haynes became a second ally and Fell worked a single off Saif Zaib’s left-arm spin to go to past fifty for the 22nd time in his 82-match career in 103 balls. By the close he’d reached 80 for just the fourth time in five years. He and Haynes added 59 in 17 overs and at 144 ahead with eight wickets in hand, Worcestershire held the whip hand. But Northamptonshire worked their way back into the game in the last hour of a long and surprisingly uninterrupted day taking 3 for 11 in 19 balls.Haynes, on 32, tried to work Zaib against the spin and edged to slip. Brett D’Oliveira was caught behind to a full Nathan Buck delivery that straightened enough and Riki Wessels dragged Buck into his off stump playing a flat-footed drive. Ben Cox also fell trying to work Zaib to leg and spooned a catch to cover to leave the match nicely poised. It appeared anything but half an hour into the day when Northamptonshire slipped to 100 for 7 replying to 219. But positive batting again proved fruitful as Gareth Berg, who made a county-best 45, and Buck dragged the hosts out of trouble with a stand of 59 in 11.2 overs.Buck fenced a boundary through gully and awkwardly pulled another. He cleared his front leg to swat Joe Leach over long-on for six and stepped away to angle Josh Tongue backward of point. But he nicked a good delivery from Ed Barnard to Mitchell at second slip for 32.Berg whipped Leach past midwicket, back-cut Ed Barnard and then played the shot of the morning – a perfect straight drive – before edging over the slips. He was missed by Leach on 33 trying to send D’Oliveira over long-off but Leach eventually atoned as Berg edged a wild drive to Cox.Berg was last out as Northamptonshire made 212 and claimed their first batting point of the season. It was a valuable innings from Berg, whose previous best in five matches for his third county had been just 5, and set up a one-innings contest that could see a tight final day.

Haris Rauf puts all his efforts into playing Tests for Pakistan

The 26-year-old pace bowler is in the 29-player squad to tour England later this year

Having originally been content to make a name for himself in white-ball cricket, fast bowler Haris Rauf has expressed his desire to play Test cricket for Pakistan after finding himself in the 29-man squad set to tour England later this year.Rauf was a great hit at the Big Bash League (BBL), picking up 20 wickets in 10 matches for the Melbourne Stars. He hasn’t reached the same heights in first-class cricket, with only 74 overs to his name since he made his debut in September 2019, but Pakistan have a history of trusting a player’s potential. The most recent example of that is Naseem Shah, who repaid the faith and became the youngest bowler ever to pick up a Test-match hat-trick.From playing grade cricket in Tasmania, to replacing Dale Steyn in the BBL, to winning a Pakistan central contract, Rauf has had a meteoric rise. But until now, he has never really been tempted to give red-ball cricket a proper go. “I made my mind properly that I am going to play Test at any cost,” he said in a video conference. “I am putting all my efforts to earn it. I am all in for it. I not only ready but very much excited to take a lot out of this [England] tour. Whatever I will get, I will make most out of it.”The way I got a start in white-ball cricket, I wish to make a name for myself in red-ball cricket. It’s a long tour and big opportunity for me,” Rauf said. “I have done well in T20 cricket but now I want to look beyond that. I know I haven’t got experience under my belt, and played three first-class matches only, but I know how to bowl longer spells. In Australia, playing premier club cricket, I did play four-day games so I have an idea of what it takes.”Rauf was discovered by Lahore Qalandars head coach Aqib Javed at a fast bowling trial in Gujranwala. Now, he is honing his skills under the tutelage of Pakistan’s bowling coach Waqar Younis. He has been enjoying the step-up.”Aqib had skills and he shared and guided me all the way,” Rauf said. “But then you move on to the next level and find new coaches and they share their experiences and help accordingly. I worked with Waqar Younis in the nets session during the Bangladesh series; I learnt several new things and going forward, I am sure this learning phase will continue. I have weaknesses but I have skill as well and you have to enhance it every day.”There were things – using the crease and reverse yorkers – that I didn’t know about but Waqar helped me. The process of how to bowl those yorkers and the control he had, I’ll never able to have that control ever. So I am asking a lot of questions and working with him; learning all these new things is very exciting. This will only be an advantage for me in international cricket.”Rauf’s last match was in the PSL in March. He picked up an ankle injury there and has since been on the sidelines thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the enforced off season, though, the 26-year-old has been making sure his body can handle the stress of bowling at 150kph.”I always try to maintain my pace in the 144-145 kph mark,” Rauf said. “So my training is mainly focused on being consistent with it rather than thinking about bowling my fastest delivery. With a smooth rhythm, any day it can go beyond that as well. All I am doing is to have an optimum fitness level so I don’t have to worry about this aspect. If you have good fitness, you definitely can maintain your pace. This England tour is the best chance for me to further prove myself and do my best for the team there.”In the last two months, I have worked extensively on my weaker muscles to make them strong. Injury, I know as a fast bowler, it can come anywhere, anytime and it is part and parcel of the game. In England and Australia, grounds are relatively softer than in Pakistan, so it’s a slight problem but then you work on your fitness and make sure you get your bases covered. I remember in a video session with Wasim Akram, he guided us that we have to strengthen our hamstring and lower back [if you are touring England] because these are the muscles most likely to pick up injuries there.”

Chelsea could rue selling a star who’s now worth as much as Palmer

Since Todd Boehly completed his purchase of Chelsea for £4.25b in May 2022, they have spent an outrageous sum of money on bringing in new players to the club. In total, they have spent £1.1bn on transfers into Stamford Bridge.

This has included high-profile acquisitions such as Raheem Sterling on a five-year contract who cost £50m from Premier League rivals Manchester City, and Frenchman Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, who cost £52m.

The Blues have also signed some lesser-known talents, who they hope to nurture over the years and eventually become key players at first-team level. This includes Lesley Ugochukwu, who joined from Rennes for £23.2m and signed a seven-year contract.

One of the best players in the Premier League, Cole Palmer, also signed for Chelsea this summer, for £40m from City. The signing was a bit of a gamble, but that has certainly paid off, with the 21-year-old scoring 20 goals and registering nine assists in 30 league games.

Of course, all these incoming meant Chelsea needed to make room in their squad over the last two seasons. The likes of Mason Mount left the club last summer, to sign for Manchester United for £55m. However, there was one other major sale in the 2023 summer window, which the Blues could well regret signing off on.

Kai Havertz’s season in numbers

The player in question here is Kai Havertz, who joined Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal last summer for a fee of £65m. It took some time for Havertz to find his feet since moving to the Emirates Stadium, but has grown into his role at the club and turned into one of the Gunners’ best players this season.

Despite a slow start to life as an Arsenal player, Havertz has 12 goals and six assists in 35 Premier League appearances, as well as scoring once in the Champions League.

Havertz started off playing in the centre of midfield, fulfilling the role left vacant by Granit Xhaka, who left the club in the summer. However, he has more recently found a place leading the line for Arsenal, and has been very successful in recent weeks.

In fact, the Germany international is Arsenal’s second-most productive player in terms of goal output in the Premier League so far this season. His 18 goal involvements are only bettered by Bukayo Saka, with the Gunners’ number seven having 25 in total, as per Sofascore.

Chelsea fans may well but frustrated at Havertz’s form in his first season Arsenal being so impressive. He is already only 19 goals behind his Chelsea tally of 32 in 91 fewer games than what he played at the Bridge.

Kai Havertz's transfer value at Arsenal in 2024

The £65m that Arsenal paid Chelsea to bring Havertz to the Emirates Stadium last summer has, so far, proved a successful investment. Aside from his superb performances in recent weeks, the 24-year-old’s market value has greatly risen since the transfer.

The Germany international, who has 15 goals in 44 games for his country so far, is now worth a whopping £86m as per CIES Football Observatory, and he is one of the most valuable players in Arsenal’s squad. Indeed, only Bukayo Saka, at £171m, and captain Martin Odegaard, at £128m, are valued higher than Havertz, with Declan Rice, William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli equal to Havertz’s value.

Incredibly, not only is Havertz the joint-third most valuable player in the current Arsenal squad, but he is equally as valuable as Palmer. The Englishman is currently tied at the top of the Golden Boot chart with former teammate Erling Haaland and has certainly been Chelsea’s best player this season.

However, he is no more valuable than Havertz, and the former Chelsea man would actually be the joint-most valuable player in their current squad had he stayed, along with Palmer and Enzo Fernandez.

Havertz’s signing has certainly been a good purchase for the Gunners, with pundit Adrian Clarke describing his recent performances as “magic”, following a stellar 6-0 win away to Sheffield United in March.

Chelsea fans and Boehly may well wish that this was one deal that did not happen last summer; after all, they have been struggling in front of goal, Palmer aside. Perhaps Havertz could have been the man to help them find the back of the net more often this season.

Newlands scandal born of leadership gulf – Ricky Ponting

The former captain said he extended his career due to concerns about the inexperience in the team

Daniel Brettig13-Feb-2020Ricky Ponting has revealed his belief that the road leading Australia to the Newlands scandal had started years before when he became fearful of a decline in the level of senior experience around the national team to adequately mentor younger players as to how to conduct themselves.Speaking to a fundraising dinner of almost 500 guests for the Chappell Foundation at the SCG on Tuesday night, Ponting said that he could see a link between the anxiety about leadership in the Australian team, that saw him play on for several years after he might easily have retired, and the eventual crisis in South Africa that saw Steven Smith and David Warner banned for a year while stripped of their leadership roles. Cameron Bancroft, a more junior member of the side, was suspended for nine months.Put simply, Ponting said, all well-rounded teams needed senior figures around them who have the ability to “say no” when questions of character, ethics or sharp practice are raised. This was conspicuously absent at the height of the Newlands scandal.”I was a bit worried that with a lot of the experience going out of our team at the same time, that there would be a bit of a void left with experienced players to be able to say ‘no’ basically,” Ponting said. “If I look at where things got at Cape Town I just don’t think there were enough people around that team to say ‘no’ to some of those guys. Things got completely out of control. That’s very much an outsider’s view on it. I had nothing to do with the team really until the last couple of years around some Twenty20 cricket and the World Cup last year.”I probably should have retired three or four years earlier than I did but I was really worried about where the direction of the Australian cricket team was going if I wasn’t around. And I wanted to be around to help Warner and Smith and Nathan Lyon and Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson. I wanted to help them through that initial phase of their international careers because I knew it wasn’t going to be easy for them.”Had Ponting retired at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season when he gave up the captaincy to Michael Clarke, he would have finished with 152 Tests, 12,363 runs and an average of 53.51, with 39 centuries. As it was, he stayed on until midway through the Test summer of 2012-13, adding two more hundreds and another nine Test match victories to take his career tally beyond 100. However, at the same time Ponting’s average was steadily eroded to 51.85 by the time of his last match in Perth against South Africa.”I was just a little bit worried with the void that was left on the experience side,” Ponting said. “Every great team that I played in, whether it be a club team or an Australian cricket team or a state team, there was always a lot of old hard heads around just to make sure when the younger guys came in that they understood what it meant to be playing for each of those teams. And if I had have retired … I was worried there wasn’t going to be enough people to point them in the right direction.”Working primarily as a commentator, Ponting kept a professional distance from the Australian side until he began to become involved in some T20 coaching from 2017 onwards, but his closeness to the set-up was greatly increased once his close friend Justin Langer became the senior coach in the wake of the Newlands scandal in 2018.”Having Justin around the national team now, I think we’ve already seen a bit of a change in behaviour and I think we’ve seen the public are really starting to enjoy and embrace the Australian cricket team again,” Ponting told the gathering. “Even looking at [Monday night], the way that David Warner spoke at the Australian Cricket Awards … wind the clock back 12 or 18 months, that wasn’t possible for him to do. I think he did a terrific job. And I think he’s slowly starting to gain a lot of the respect of the Australian public back again.”The Chappell Foundation, which collects funds for homeless youths, raised more than A$400,000 on the night, as Ponting and the foundation’s founder Greg Chappell also took guests on a guided tour of the Australian dressing room.
