Dougie Brown named UAE coach

Dougie Brown, the former England and Scotland allrounder, has been named coach of UAE. He will begin working with the team full-time on June 1, leading up to a limited-overs tour of the Netherlands in mid-July.Earlier this year, Brown had worked with UAE over a three-month spell as interim coach. UAE had been without a full-time coach since former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed resigned from the post in April 2016.Brown, who played 25 ODIs and two T20Is in an international career spanning a decade from 1997 to 2007, had also previously overseen Netherlands, during the Desert T20 tournament in the UAE in January. Before that, he had worked as English county Warwickshire’s director of cricket, and the club won the domestic one-day cup during his time in charge.Waleed Bukhatir, a member of the Emirates Cricket Board Member and UAE’s chief selector said: “Dougie’s influence with and impact on the players has been evident through their recent form and commitment, and we look forward to watching them continue this upward curve under his guidance.”Brown said he hoped to build on the strides he made during his three-month stint with the team. “We have had an outstanding three months and I continue to be impressed with both individual and team performances,” he said. “I relish the opportunity to further develop the team culture and reinforce our style of play.”

Man United "Exploring" Goalkeeper Options Despite Onana Links

Manchester United are looking at "many goalkeepers" in the transfer market despite concrete links with Inter's Andre Onana, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest on United's goalkeeper search?

Erik ten Hag still has big decisions to make before the Premier League season begins in mid-August, one of which being who he wants as his goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

With David de Gea's contract situation still unclear, all attention has been on who may come in to replace the Spaniard in between the sticks.

Inter's Andre Onana has been the man most frequently linked with being De Gea's successor, with the Italian side braced for an official bid from United for their stopper.

However, transfer insider Romano has claimed that the Red Devils are keeping their options open at the moment, with plenty of goalkeepers on their radar.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "Still no bid [for Onana] from Manchester United, as I'm speaking. Inter are still waiting for that bid because they are convinced that Manchester United will bid, and they know that Man United are exploring multiple options, not just Onana.

"It is true that they are considering many goalkeepers and many solutions, including the possibility of speaking again to David de Gea. So, they want to consider all the options, but among these options there is for sure Andre Onana."

He added: "Still time for internal discussion before attacking any situation for goalkeepers. So, this is the reality for Onana, still no bid on Monday morning."

Ten Hag is interested in a goalkeeper who complements his passing philosophy more than De Gea, much like Onana does, but a number of factors such as price, age and availability will naturally enter discussions surrounding a new number one at Man United.

Inter want somewhere around the £45m mark for Onana who was instrumental in the club's journey to the Champions League final last season and Coppa Italia triumph.

Who are United's other goalkeeper options?

One of the most obvious options available to Ten Hag is simply offering a new contract to De Gea, who has reportedly agreed to a pay cut to stay at Old Trafford. The 32-year-old won the Premier League Golden Glove award last season, keeping 17 clean sheets for the Red Devils.

Brentford's David Raya could be an alternative with the Spaniard desperate to leave the Bees this summer. The 27-year-old, who is very comfortable with the ball at his feet, was linked with Tottenham but the Lilywhites have since brought in Guglielmo Vicario, which likely means any deal would now be off the table.

Erik ten Hag is supposedly a huge fan of MLS goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic as well (via MEN), with the 23-year-old New England Revolution shot-stopper a name to keep an eye on at Old Trafford.

Du Plessis calls on in-form players to make it count

This may sound counter-intuitive but South Africa don’t want a hero. Not one, anyway. They want many.”In every series, every time there has been a saviour in the batting line-up. If we don’t have those guys who save us on the day, there would have been a few times when we would have been rolled out cheaply,” Faf du Plessis said ahead of the Hamilton Test. “That’s aconcern. It’s not good enough. We want more consistency.”Despite being 1-0 up in the series, South Africa’s batting has not been at its best with half of the top six struggling. Stephen Cook, Hashim Amla and JP Duminy have yet to score a fifty and South Africa only have one hundred in this series, from Dean Elgar, compared to New Zealand’stwo, scored by Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls.Though Temba Bavuma, Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock have five fifties between them, South Africa see that as below-par because they do not have any player racking up more than one hundred in the series. “The standards we set for ourselves as abatting unit are extremely high and we haven’t delivered on that,” du Plessis said. After du Plessis’ lone hundred in the two home Tests against New Zealand in August, South Africa set their batsmen a challenge to try and score more than one century in a series. Essentially, they want those who find form to make the most of it. No one managed that in Australia – though they had five centuries – or the home series against Sri Lanka, where they had another five. Cook came closest, when he scored hundreds in successive Tests in Adelaideand Port Elizabeth. That means the pressure is as much on Elgar to try to add another three-figure score as it is on the out-of-form players to get among the runs. If he does that, it may not have much of an impact on continuity because the season ends here, but it will ensure South Africa have achieved everything they set out to do at the start of a season they began at No.7 in the Test rankings.”Our goal was to get to No.2 at the end – we knew No.1 was going to be a little bit steep because India were so far ahead – so our goal was to get to No.2 and if we do that, it will be an incredible year,” du Plessis sad. “We would have ticked every box, won every series we’ve played and I saw there will be a nice little bonus for second place as well, so that will be nice to get the guys going.”A cash award of $500,000 is awarded to the team in second place in the Test rankings and though it is only half of what South Africa have received in previous years, when they topped the rankings, it is much more than they would have expected after last season’s disappointments. And the money is only one reason South Africa have their eye on a series win.Victory in New Zealand will restore their road warrior reputation, which extended nine years before being dented by defeat in India in 2015. That remains the only series South Africa have lost away from home in a decade, a testament to their ability to adapt.”I don’t think people appreciate and understand exactly how well the South African team before me and the guys that are playing now did. The record was exceptional. That India series was the one series where we were outplayed but apart from that we’ve been really good,” du Plessis said. “Mentally we are a very resilient team. We know that whatever the situation on the day, you have to find a way and try and make sure you deliver. You can never use an excuse, whether it’s green or spinning. You just have to get on and do the job. Our mental toughness has helped us.”

Man Utd Sizing Up Move For £297k p/w Ace To Bolster Midfield

Manchester United are admirers of Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka as Erik Ten Hag looks to bolster his midfield with some quality additions this summer, journalist Dean Jones has suggested.

What's the latest transfer news involving Manchester United and Leon Goretzka?

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United are monitoring Goretzka as a potential alternative to Declan Rice, who has also been a target for the Red Devils this window.

Taking to Twitter, Plettenberg stated: "News Goretzka: Man Utd is monitoring his situation! MUFC is aware of the fact that his future his uncertain because of Rice. But no concrete talks or negotiations yet. Goretzka is staying calm and his position is clear: He definitely wants to stay as he identifies 100 % with FC Bayern! And: Rummenigge supports him."

As per The Daily Mail, Bayern Munich are also keen suitors in the hunt for West Ham United midfielder Rice, potentially creating a transfer domino effect; however, The Guardian have since revealed that the 24-year-old could be en route to Arsenal in a deal worth a fee in the region of £100 million.

In 2022/23, Goretzka, who has been hailed as a "chameleon" by Bundesliga and an "incredible goal threat", made 40 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions and managed to notch six goals and six assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Salary Sport understand that the Germany international earns around £231k-a-week on a contract that runs until the summer of 2026.

Writing in his column for GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jones has indicated that Goretzka is definitely a player that is liked by chiefs at Old Trafford.

Jones suggested: They also need to sort the midfield, where Marcel Sabitzer was on loan last season and Fred and Scott McTominay prepare to have their partnership broken up once and for all. We have seen them make early strides for Mason Mount but look out for the likes of Romeo Lavia. Other players they admire are £230,000-a-week star Leon Goretzka – described as being an "extraordinary" player – Declan Rice and Adrien Rabiot but top target Frenkie De Jong is off limits.

Who else have Manchester United been linked with?

Manchester United have been linked with several players this summer as their hunt for signings gets underway and Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has emerged as a key target, with a bid expected to be formalised for the England international, as per Sky Sports.

Napoli defender Kim Min-jae is also on the radar at Old Trafford and has been earmarked as a priority target this off-season, according to Foot Mercato via ESPN.

Kim Min-jae of Napoli.

Sky Sports also claim that Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund is someone who has been identified to spearhead Manchester United's attack, though a bid for Tottenham Hotspur talisman Harry Kane is unlikely.

Ten Hag will be keen to see if he can build a side capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season and Manchester United fans will be pleased to see that their club are taking a proactive approach in the transfer market.

Man United Table "Big" Contract Offer To "Extraordinary’ £54k-p/w Star

Manchester United have tabled a "big" contract offer to Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae, according to journalist Raimondo De Magistris.

What's the latest on Kim Min-jae to Man United?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has recently reported that Man United are the current front-runners to sign Kim this summer, however he also points out that his release clause is only available to activate in July, so it has now become a waiting game.

Romano claims that the Red Devils started work on the transfer back in October, and another recent update indicates they are willing to pay the defender's release clause, which is a minimum of €50m (£43m), however they may face late competition.

Newcastle United have "sent their scouts" to watch the South Korean on a number of occasions, indicating they could make a late attempt to hijack the move, however Romano also stresses that the Magpies' interest is not "concrete".

In a recent interview with Radio Gol (via Sport Witness), De Magistris has confirmed that Man United have taken a big step towards signing the 26-year-old, by tabling him an official contract offer.

The journalist said: “As far as the team is concerned, for Kim, we have to wait until July. Napoli would like to keep him, renew his contract, but the knife is on the player’s side. Manchester United offered him a big salary. Kim is inclined to accept it.”

Will Kim sign for Man United?

At the moment, all the signs indicate the South Korea international is on his way to Old Trafford this summer, and he could be a real upgrade on Harry Maguire, who has been heavily linked with a move elsewhere.

Crucially, the £54k-per-week Napoli star is far more composed with the ball at his feet, averaging a pass completion rate of 90.2% per 90 over the past year, placed in the 90th percentile compared to his positional peers, while Maguire ranks in the 52nd percentile.

Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae.

Not only that, but the 6 foot 3 colossus has also averaged more tackles and interceptions than the Englishman, and his average Sofascore rating of 7.22 in the Serie A last season is superior to Maguire's average of 6.95 in the Premier League.

Lauded as "extraordinary" by Napoli teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Kim could be a real bargain at just £43m, and it is fantastic news that he is "inclined" to agree a move to Old Trafford in the near future.

Ervine leads Hampshire on revenge mission

ScorecardSean Ervine punches the air after reaching his century•PA Photos

It does not take a particularly long memory to recall July 18. But Hampshire certainly can. On July 18, Surrey batted Hampshire into submission. Six-hundred-and-thirty-seven first-innings runs worth of submission. Ben Foakes, who scored a ton, admitted that Surrey’s captain Gareth Batty, who also scored a ton, carried on batting for a couple of overs after tea on day two “just to piss them off”.Here was Hampshire’s retribution. They had built a fine base on the second day, but lost Tom Alsop and Liam Dawson, both to Mark Footitt, within the third morning’s first 30 minutes. First-innings parity did not look beyond Surrey. At the other end stood Sean Ervine, who just batted. He batted his way to his third century in three matches. He batted through Hampshire’s highest sixth-wicket partnership against Surrey – 186 with Ryan McLaren, who also scored a century, his first in the Championship (this was the first time three Hampshire batsmen had reached three figures in an innings in 24 years). Then there was 65 with Lewis McManus, the impish keeper-batsman who held up Surrey at the Ageas, and 48 then 44 with the tattooed Gareths, the belligerent Berg and brutal Andrew. The declaration had felt like it might never come. Berg smote Batty for 22 in four balls to take Hampshire past 500, which felt like a convenient juncture. But no. Leading by 200; not enough. Then Berg went, caught by Batty at mid-on, to become Footitt’s sixth wicket, and the Surrey players set off with him, seemingly expecting James Vince to wave his arm. Not yet. Ervine brought up 1000 runs in a first-class season for the first time, then his 150, Hampshire’s 550, and also their highest score at The Oval, 559. When Andrew’s romp ended, Ervine appeared to start wandering in, only to see Brad Wheal bound out. Wheal had bounced out Stuart Meaker on the second morning, and he won again: a pulled six and a top-edged four finally bringing the mercy blow, 253 ahead.Ervine said that Hampshire actually declared an over earlier than planned, giving them nine overs of bowling, which Surrey survived unscathed, before stumps. But how Hampshire had enjoyed their jaunt; nine of the 11 players here were the victims at the Ageas, a game they came within minutes of saving after batting two days in sweltering heat. “It was nice,” said Ervine of getting some payback. “It was a pity we couldn’t get to the third new ball, that would have been fun.”Ervine’s was a magnificently measured innings. He had 37 when joined by McLaren, with the second new ball three overs away. McLaren’s dashing array of cuts, pulls and drives meant he soon caught Ervine (when they both had 59) and, as Hampshire’s lead grew to 100, they were going tit for tat, their scores never more than eight runs apart all the way through to their centuries in quick succession. Both were cautious when necessary – Tom Curran bowled particularly well, even if Footitt claimed the rewards – but cashed in as Surrey’s attack flagged. McLaren, one of the shrewdest overseas signings about – he balances Hampshire’s side just as Tim Bresnan does Yorkshire’s – found mid-off a ball after a beautiful straight drive took him to a raucously celebrated ton. After a stylish, steadying showing from McManus, the baton was picked up by Berg and Andrew and their focus on flaying was singular – “that was great to watch from the other end,” Ervine laughed. Ervine, hellbent on being there to the finish, credited his best year with the bat for Hampshire to a beery chat with his compatriot Murray Goodwin during pre-season. He is playing the ball later and, while there are moments of brutality, such as when Batty was thumped into the OCS Stand, he is leaving more too. He is 33, and it feels like he has been around longer, but there is life in the old dog yet. “It’s a huge thing for me,” he said of reaching 1000 runs. “I’ve come close a few times, so I’m over the moon, especially having missed a few games through injuries.”A draw would confirm Surrey’s own survival, and Rory Burns and Dom Sibley batted well to reach stumps, but Hampshire were encouraged by the bite and turn found by the single over from Liam Dawson, England spinner elect. Remarkably, victory would take Hampshire to fifth with just a home game against fellow strugglers Durham to come. Never has the gap between the divisions been wider, seldom has more been at stake.A second Great Escape, according to Ervine, after the illness of Michael Carberry, the injuries of all and sundry, and the departure of Dale Benkenstein, would “top any season I’ve ever been involved with Hampshire. Given all that’s gone on, staying up would feel like winning the Championship.”Ten Surrey wickets, it seems, would mean far more than just revenge.

Cook and Root restate basic values with twin tons

Alastair Cook and Joe Root restored England’s equilibrium after defeat at Lord’s with immaculate hundreds on a flawless pitch on the opening day of the Old Trafford Test

The Report by David Hopps22-Jul-2016England 314 for 4 (Root 141*, Cook 105) v Pakistan
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFor England, the opening forays in the Old Trafford Test presented a chance to restate basic values, an opportunity to eradicate the slackness that had characterised their batting during a 75-run defeat at Lord’s. Their leading lights, Alastair Cook and Joe Root, did their utmost to set the tone: centuries claimed by both on a day of Pakistan toil.England were fortunate they did because Alex Hales, James Vince and Gary Ballance – the latter against the second new ball – all fell cheaply as the middle order failed to assert itself in excellent batting conditions.Cook’s 29th Test hundred took him alongside Don Bradman, albeit in about three times as many innings, and there was such a skip in his step that he had it signed, sealed and delivered 15 minutes before tea, his second fifty at virtually a run a ball.It would have been tempting to call it an immaculate hundred on a flawless pitch, were it not for the evidence of what became the last ball before tea. He was bowled for 105 by Mohammad Amir, betrayed on the back foot by a delivery that scuttled through malevolently to bowl him off a defensive cue end.Root was 87 upon Cook’s dismissal, the partnership worth 185 in 49 overs, but his desire to recalibrate extended to the close at which point he was unbeaten on 141. There has been a growing sense that Root has felt in such bountiful form at the crease that he has been lulled into over ambition, but this was an innings of unremitting virtue, straighter of stroke, as he committed himself to eliminating risk and was rewarded for his discretion. The last time Cook made a Test hundred, it broke Len Hutton’s record for the longest Test innings, in terms of minutes, ever assembled by an England batsman. Pakistan conceded that one, too, in a high-scoring stalemate in Abu Dhabi in November. There will be some suffering for bowlers before this Test turns in their favour, but stalemate seems unlikely.Amir possessed most verve for Pakistan. He had received a gracious welcome at Lord’s on his return to Test cricket and the sense of a sentence served, and a career reborn, largely survived in Manchester. There were sporadic taunts of “no-ball” from the crowd, a contrast to Lord’s where even talking loudly is viewed as indecorous, but there was no malevolence, and he should view that as fair enough in his comeback series. It will be no surprise if his growing confidence that forgiveness is widespread – and that even those who would have life-banned him have made their peace with the decision – is indicated in the growing ambition of his haircut. It was wild and flowing in his teenaged years, assumed military sobriety on his return from suspension as if a symbol of repentance laid down by the High Sparrow, but there is a sign now of something imaginative going on.Hales was the England batsman to fall in the morning, his progress in the series against Sri Lanka so far stilled by a Pakistan left-arm pace attack of higher quality. He was cleaned up by Amir, a ball that might have been driveable had his footwork possessed more conviction and it not swung in with pace and malice to bowl him through the gate.By then, Hales had been given a bit of a going-over. A leave against Rahat Ali was perilously close, an lbw appeal resulting from a Rahat inswinger also adjacent, and three balls before his dismissal a boundary against Amir burst through gully’s hands. This is an examination of far greater intensity than the one provided by the Sri Lanka attack that Sanath Jayasuriya risibly billed as the best in the world.England have not lost at Old Trafford since 2001, a warm day told of a gathering summer and, if the pitch was not quite as quick as some hoped, it had pace and evenness enough to make batting an enjoyable proposition for Cook and Root.Pakistan employed Yasir’s legspin as early as the 13th over and he completed two short spells by lunch, but in the afternoon, with Cook and Root in absolute control, he was reduced to negativity when he went around the wicket to Root, hunting out imaginary rough created by Pakistan’s imaginary right-arm quicks. He will be more of a handful second time around – although 31 overs on the opening day was quite a burden. For Cook, such an easeful innings was rare; here is a batsman who has proceeded through a productive Test career by virtue of dogged concentration and pared-down risk. His introductory boundaries were edgy affairs – Amir causing him to edge wide of third slip with the sixth ball of the day – but he rarely had so many opportunities to unveil his favourite cut shot and a measured first 50 turned into a dance in the park.Root looked crisp of mind and stroke from the outset, his approach an assertion that he had tired of himself as “The Great Entertainer”. That he rode a blow on the shoulder from Amir, rather than risk a pull with two men back, told of his mindset. He reduced risk against the left-arm angle by driving determinedly straight off the front foot and square off the back foot. His afternoon began with a controlled pull against Rahat, and was rounded off with his first slog-sweep, against the spin of Yasir, with the ball full enough to minimise the risk and the wrists rolled.Take away Cook and Root and not everything was rosy for England. Vince still has no half-century in an increasingly troubled introductory Test summer in which has dismissal, driving at a wide one from , has become his own version of Groundhog Day. Nothing has removed the suspicion held by many county watchers that for all his mournful-faced style he is prone to error.Ballance battled to take advantage of his second Test phase, but he looked uncertain here, arising from his stance like a mole emerging from a mound of earth, not entirely sure of its bearings. Rahat bowled him, a delivery angled in by the left-armer which Ballance tried to chop behind point when it was too close for the shot and instead deflected on to his stumps.Pakistan’s pace bowlers were at their least impressive with the second new ball, Misbah-ul-Haq almost indicating that he expected as much by semi-defensive fields. How a four-strong attack must have regretted the lack of Mohammad Hafeez’s offspin – his action is due to be retested after a 12-month ban expired – because a few holding overs would have helped them through the day.

Bell's quality sets up Bears' last-ball victory

Ian Bell’s excellent 67 steered the Birmingham Bears to a thrilling four wicket victory off the final ball of the NatWest Blast T20 match against the Derbyshire Falcons at Derby. The Bears appeared to be coasting in pursuit of the Falcons 141 for 7 when Bell was leading the chase but his dismissal in the 19th over left the game in the balance and it needed a four from Ateeq Javid off the last ball to deny the home side.Derbyshire’s new head coach John Sadler, whose appointment for the rest of the season was confirmed before the game, said: “It’s disappointing but that’s T20 cricket and we did well to get back in the game.”Former Derbyshire captain Rikki Clarke had taken 2 for 17 off four overs as the Falcons struggled in the first part of their innings before Wayne Madsen with 38 from 34 balls and some late blows from Shiv Thakor took them to a challenging score on a slow pitch. The Falcons innings began with Clarke striking Billy Godleman on the helmet with the first ball before the opener pulled Oliver Hannon-Dolby to deep midwicket.John Sadler, Derbyshire head coach•Getty Images

Chesney Hughes pulled Clarke for six but two balls later drove low to mid off where Bell took a good catch and Clarke struck again when Neil Broom top-edged a pull to cover in the fifth over. The accuracy of the Bears attack restricted the Falcons to 58 for 3 at the halfway point and Madsen responded by lifting Jetan Patel over midwicket for six before pulling Mark Adair just past the diving Chris Woakes for four.Madsen dispatched another short ball from Patel for six but Hamish Rutherford was lbw in the same over for 33 from 31 balls when he tried to work the off-spinner behind square.Adair ended Madsen’s innings when a top-edged pull landed in the gloves of Luke Ronchi and although Jimmy Neesham drove the next ball high into the stands, he edged a drive in the next over and was well caught by Ronchi diving low to his left.Thakor gave the innings a late flourish by pulling Hannon-Dolby and Woakes for sixes in an unbeaten 20 from 13 balls as 26 came from the last two overs to give the Falcons a respectable total. But Bell and Sam Hain gave the Bears an excellent start by taking 44 from the first five overs with Bell taking three fours off consecutive balls from Thakor.Bell drove Matt Critchley over long on for six but the leg-spinner struck three balls later when Hain sliced a drive to cover although after 10 overs, the Bears were well placed at 73 for 1.Alex Hughes should have removed Bell on 42 but Broom at deep midwicket spilled the catch diving forward and he completed his 50 from 39 balls before Laurie Evans became the latest batsman to top-edge a pull.Bell drove Andy Carter for six but Ronchi drove Alex Hughes to long off in the 18th over and Bell holed out to long on in the next to give the Falcons a chance of victory with the Bears needingAaron Thomason scooped Neesham to square leg and although the next ball shot through for four byes, Woakes was run out going for a second off the penultimate ball but Javid’s drive beat the bowler’s despairing dive to clinch victory.
