Crystal Palace may have a 20y/o Edouard replacement who’s "a real threat"

Crystal Palace are five games into the new Oliver Glasner era, and while it might not have quite brought with it the excitement that many were hoping for, it has brought an upturn in form.

The Austrian manager has seen his side pick up six points from a possible 15, and while that's not ideal, it is better than the three they picked up from Roy Hodgson's final five games at the club.

It certainly feels like the former Eintracht Frankfurt boss has the ability to take Palace to new heights, but one player who probably won't be around for the ride is Odsonne Edouard.

Odsonne Edouard's stats this season

The Eagles spent around £14m signing Edouard from Scottish Giants Celtic in the summer of 2021, and while it wasn't a massive fee, there was some excitement that he'd be able to forge a great career in English football thanks to his record of 87 goals and 38 assists in 179 games for the Hoops.

Unfortunately, despite looking impressive here and there over the last two and a half years for the south Londoners, the Frenchman has never really looked like he was going to recreate his Celtic goalscoring form south of the border.

This year has been a particularly disappointing campaign for the 26-year-old. He's made just 25 appearances all season – 19 of which have been starts – in which he's scored seven goals and provided no assists.

Odsonne Edouard Crystal Palace

This means he's averaging a goal involvement every 3.5 games, which is significantly worse than Jean-Philippe Mateta's average of a goal involvement every 2.1 games.

Moreover, it is apparent that Glasner views Mateta as his number one striker as he's started the last five games. In contrast, the former Celtic man has started just two of the previous five games – both as an attacking midfielder.

It certainly looks like the striker's time at Selhurst Park is ending, especially as an academy talent with a brilliant youth-level record is cutting his teeth out on loan this year and could stake a claim for a role in the first team next season.

Why fans should be excited about Ademola Ola-Adebomi

The youngster in question is 20-year-old centre-forward Ademola Ola-Adebomi, who joined Palace's academy set-up at just eight years old in 2012 and has since fought his way up through the various youth sides and even made it onto the bench for the first team's League Cup clash at Old Trafford in September.

At the youth level, the "exceptional" academy prospect, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, was in a league of his own. He scored 34 goals and provided six assists in 65 appearances across the U18 and U21 teams, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.6 games.

This scintillating form earned him the right to go out on loan and test himself in the senior game, and so, in January of this year, he signed a short-term deal with League One outfit Burton Albion. In 11 appearances, he has scored one goal and provided two assists, although only six of those have been starts.

It might not be quite the return he would have been hoping for, considering his performances at the youth level, but a goal involvement every 202 minutes in his first season of senior football is still impressive.

Moreover, he has made an impact on Burton's manager, Martin Paterson, who described the forward as "technically really good", "a real threat in the area" and one of Palace's "top talents."

Ultimately, while he's unlikely to replace Mateta in the starting lineup next season, there is no reason that Ola-Adebomi couldn't take Edouard's place as the backup striker in Glasner's squad, especially with another couple of months of experience with Burton under his belt.

Ollie Pope, Ben Stokes lead England fightback after South Africa quicks chip away

Test cricket can do funny things to your perception of time, and you can’t have the drama of fifth-day finishes such as the Cape Town Test without some longueurs in between. However, by any measure this was slow going as the series resumed in Port Elizabeth, with England puttering along in attritional conditions to give themselves a platform from which they will hope to dictate terms. As at Newlands, England’s top-order batsmen failed to capitalise on a series of good starts, with Zak Crawley’s 44 the top score of a spit-and-sawdust sort of day. Without much in the way of assistance from the pitch, South Africa focused instead on bottling up the scoring, Keshav Maharaj wheeling away to good effect as England lost 4 for 78 between the 31st and 65th overs, before an unbroken stand of 76 between Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope saw the tourists edge back on to the front foot.Pope shone in particular as the shadows lengthened on the Eastern Cape, showcasing the sort of strokeplay that has seen him compared to Ian Bell. The second new ball was dispatched to the ropes three times in as many deliveries from Anrich Nortje, Pope following up a whippy on drive with one crunched through the covers, and he skipped along in relatively carefree fashion compared to his colleagues. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada claimed two wickets, despite twice being overlooked for new-ball duties – and his roar of celebration at toppling Joe Root’s off stump said plenty about the arduous nature of bowling on such a sluggish surface. All the pre-game talk about the wind assisting swing in Port Elizabeth seemed to have almost literally become a case of shooting the breeze, as the stultifying atmosphere left South Africa’s attack sweating hard for their successes.Faf du Plessis must have been grateful for the precision of his spinner, whose efforts from the Duckpond End at least allowed the South Africa captain to regularly rotate his seamers. Maharaj came on shortly before lunch and had figures of 30-10-54-1 when the second new ball arrived during the evening session; he was unlucky not to have added to his sole success, too, finding appreciable turn from a surface that is predicted to become even drier over the coming days.It was du Plessis’ leg-theory tactics that brought South Africa their initial breakthroughs, and England then threatened to wander down a dead end as the runs dried up. Maharaj only conceded 18 runs from his 16 overs between lunch and tea, and his efforts in tying down Joe Denly – who faced 100 balls for the ninth time in 13 Test innings but once again could not turn that base into a significant score – resulted in a wicket shortly after tea.Denly’s attempt to cut a ball from middle and off stump was his undoing, though Maharaj had Quinton de Kock to thank after the wicketkeeper spotted that the ball had brushed pad fractionally before hitting the bat. Maharaj caused Stokes plenty of discomfort early in his innings, too, twice failing with reviews as the ball spun back in sharply from outside the left-hander’s off stump.Rabada then scythed through Root, with England’s captain left looking suspiciously at the pitch after playing back to a delivery that seemed to keep low, and that left Stokes carrying the weight of England expectations. Fresh from being awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy as the ICC’s player of the year, he cut a more workaday figure in compiling 38 from 86 balls – although the significance of his wicket was clear when South Africa again turned to the DRS late in the day, only to lose the review after Vernon Philander’s delivery was shown to be missing off stump.Root’s decision to bat first was vindicated by a somnambulant morning session, during which Sibley and Crawley batted through with little drama – becoming the first England openers to reach lunch without being parted on day one of an overseas Test since Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss in Barbados more than a decade ago.South Africa curiously chose not to hand Rabada the new ball but Philander and the debutant Dane Paterson found little in the way of assistance from a pedestrian St George’s Park deck. When Rabada did enter the attack, he caused a minor ripple as Crawley, perhaps spurred on by memories of their brief second-innings duel in Cape Town, twice played instinctive pulls shots that nearly came to grief.Sibley had looked the more composed of the two, as befitting a man who scored his maiden Test hundred 10 days ago. He took advantage of the extra pace provided by Nortje to score four of his five boundaries, including one well-timed clip through mid-on, but fell to Rabada after the lunch break when he was taken by the man place deliberately at backward square leg for a fend off the body.South Africa’s leg trap paid dividends again when Crawley was snapped up in a similar position by the diving Rassie van der Dussen, who clasped the ball gratefully after it had squirmed free from his initial one-handed attempt, sending England’s newest opener back six runs short of a first Test half-century.

Hughes’ first signing? Liverpool eyeing move for "outstanding" centre-back

Liverpool have been handed a chance to bolster their defensive ranks this summer after it emerged that they are keeping tabs on a standout star whose club are facing FFP peril.

Liverpool confirm Richard Hughes as new sporting director

It is shaping up to be a fascinating final few months of the campaign for Liverpool, but fans will already have one eye firmly on the summer. Though they have already scooped the Carabao Cup this season and are in the running for both the Premier League and Europa League, they were rocked earlier in the season by the news that Jurgen Klopp would be leaving after nine years at the helm.

During that time, he has taken the Reds from a fading giant to one of the Premier League's major heavyweights once more, bringing memorable moments and serious success to Anfield. His departure, and that of his assistant Pep Lijnders, is set to come as a massive blow to the club. However, it will also coincide with yet more change as Michael Edwards takes charge as the new CEO of the club, with Richard Hughes announced as the new sporting director.

And there will be surgery on the pitch too. As it stands, several players are out of contract at the end of the campaign and it is expected that both Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will leave as free agents, so Hughes will be looking to get busy straight away.

Liverpool eyeing up "outstanding" star

Now, reliable journalist Sami Mokbel has revealed that the Reds are one of several clubs keeping tabs on impressive Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, with Forest potentially under pressure this summer either from relegation or from need to comply with financial fair play, which they have already been docked four points for breaching.

One of their major assets is Murillo, who has been excellent since his summer arrival from Corinthians and has earned plenty of high praise.

Speaking on standout centre-backs across the 2023/24 season, ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher highlighted both Murillo and Jarrad Branthwaite as those that have have impressed him this campaign, hailing the Nottingham Forest man as "outstanding".

“I remember being a young lad going in myself at Liverpool and it’s an unforgiving position, I had to go to full-back for the next three or four years and then go back to centre-back, so you can see the quality we have. Branthwaite has been outstanding, Murillo I think has been outstanding too.”

The report claims that the Reds have been joined by Premier League trio Manchester City, Arsenal and Newcastle United in their admiration of the young defender, as well as European giants PSG and Barcelona.

With Matip set to leave the club and Van Dijk turning 33 years old before the new season, there is need for new blood in the heart of defence at Anfield sooner rather than later, with options thin on the ground.

Though it has previously been claimed that Forest would hold out for a record fee for Murillo, circumstance may change that, and could spark an almighty tussle for his signature this summer.

Ratcliffe already identifies teenage defender as priority Man Utd target

Manchester United are on the lookout for new signings as they prepare for life under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and potentially a new sporting director to boot, and one youngster with "world-class material" is believed to be a priority target this summer.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils have been linked with plenty of players in recent weeks, too, even though the January transfer window has only recently slammed shut, because the approval of Ratcliffe's takeover has led to interest in Newcastle and former Brighton transfer guru Dan Ashworth. He is seen as an ideal sporting director, and Jason Wilcox could come in as technical director.

Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries has emerged as a target for United, with manager Erik ten Hag thought to be a big admirer of his Dutch compatriot and fans desperate to see who their new regime identifies for the boss – or indeed if they get a new boss altogether.

Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini is also a player who has been backed to move to Old Trafford in the near future, with the 20-year-old seen as an exciting young option with a high ceiling. Contact has reportedly been made by United. There is also Matthijs de Ligt on the topic of defenders, with the Dutchman finding himself out of favour at Bayern Munich this season, meaning a summer move away could appeal to him.

Man Utd prioritise Leny Yoro

According to a new update from AS [via Sport Witness], Manchester United want to sign Lille defender Leny Yoro this summer, with the young starlet among their "priorities" in the next transfer window.

The Red Devils "recently expressed interest" in snapping him up, and while Paris Saint-Germain are also in the mix to sign him, their rivalry with Lille could ultimately work in United's favour, should they prefer to sell to them.

Lille defender Leny Yoro.

Yoro really could be a fantastic signing by the club if they can strike a deal this summer, considering he would be arriving as both an immediate key figure and also a player who could be a force for at least the next decade.

This season, the 18-year-old has started 19 matches in Ligue 1, during which time he has shone, enjoying a 91.8% pass completion rate and averaging 3.1 clearances per game. Meanwhile, football talent scout Jacek Kulig says he is "world-class material", in terms of the level he can reach as he further matures as a player.

Man Utd now in “front row” to sign “dangerous” player Ten Hag loves

The Red Devils are aware of the contractual issues that have arisen.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 16, 2024

Too often in the past, United have been guilty of poor recruitment when it comes to the age of signings, with too many big names coming in when they are either too old or on the verge of being past their peak. There are almost too many examples to mention, but the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all stand out.

The hope is that Ratcliffe wants a very different approach to transfers, however, as his – and potentially Ashworth's – influence at United hopefully keeps growing, with focus on bringing in the top young talent who can help take the club back to the top of English football.

Yoro would be a perfect place to start, coming in as an upgrade and far younger alternative to Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire, potentially becoming a genuine defensive force for many years.

Rangers star sold for £4m has been even better than Dessers after leaving

Glasgow Rangers find themselves in territory which looked unimaginable following the sacking of Michael Beale at the start of October.

The Ibrox side were trailing Celtic by a considerable margin in the Premiership and lacked any real identity, with the supporters seemingly writing off another season.

Philippe Clement arrived to save the day, however, and just five months on, the Gers are through to the last 16 of the Europa League, have claimed the League Cup trophy and, most importantly, are within touching distance of Celtic.

The Belgian has done a spectacular job considering he has had to utilise some of Beale’s summer signings, with the likes of Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers featuring prominently.

Lammers has since departed on loan to FC Utrecht for the remainder of the campaign, yet Dessers is still in Glasgow, despite having failed to live up to his lavish transfer fee.

Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers statistics

Having lost attacking talents such as Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, Beale’s first priority during the summer transfer window was to replace them as soon as possible.

Dessers soon arrived from Serie A side Cremonese for a fee in the region of £4.5m, which was a significant sum to be paying for a striker who had scored just six league goals in Italy the season prior.

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.

The Nigerian forward has found the back of the net on just 12 occasions since making the summer move and his performances have not been great, as he often goes missing during big games.

A key example was the recent Old Firm clash against Celtic at Parkhead. The 29-year-old started the tie, yet he missed a big chance when it looked easier to score, while completing just 12 passes and taking 25 touches during the match.

The former Feyenoord hitman looks far too one dimensional and his lack of tactical nous means he does not drop deep often enough to link up with the midfield, going large patches of games without taking a touch of the ball.

Rangers required a player who could do more than just be an out-and-out goalscorer following the departure of Morelos, but Dessers simply isn’t the answer.

There was another attacker who departed Ibrox in 2023 that could have been a much better option than Dessers and surely would have thrived under Clement – Fashion Sakala.

What happened to Fashion Sakala

Following their first league title win in a decade, Steven Gerrard looked to significantly bolster his team in order to cement their dominance.

Sakala joined during the summer of 2021 for free, with the Gers securing his services on a pre-contract agreement and it looked like a wise investment.

The Zambian forward took a while to settle in at Rangers following his move from Belgium, eventually scoring 12 goals, and registering seven assists in 50 matches during his debut season.

He ended up winning the Scottish Cup while featuring heavily during the club’s run to the final of the Europa League in 2022, although they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Former Rangers forward Fashion Sakala.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst didn’t give him many opportunities throughout the early stages of the 2022/23 season and it wasn’t until Beale arrived that Sakala started to perform well.

Indeed, having scored just once prior to the enforced hiatus due to the World Cup, Sakala netted 11 times during the second half of the season and proved that he could make a difference to the team going forward.

Former Ibrox defender Alan Hutton previously dubbed the forward as a “firework” and his unpredictable nature often caught defences out on a regular basis.

During the summer transfer window last year, however, Beale decided to cash in on the 26-year-old, reportedly securing a transfer fee of around £4m for the player, which, on the surface, represented solid business.

With Dessers not quite living up to his big-money fee and Sakala settling in quite nicely in Saudi Arabia for Al-Fayha, there is no doubt that the former Rangers forward is currently outperforming the Nigerian this season.

Fashion Sakala is outperforming Cyriel Dessers

While Sakala may have scored ten goals to Dessers’ 12, the Zambian has netted his in just 27 matches, while it has taken the 29-year-old 35 games to score his.

In their respective leagues, Sakala has missed fewer big chances (nine to 13), than Dessers, while he has taken more shots per game (3.2 vs 2.7), succeeded with more successful dribbles per game (2.7 vs 0.4) and won more total duels per game (5.5 vs 2.4), clearly showcasing his superior statistics across a range of performance metrics this term.

It isn’t just domestically that Sakala is shining either, proving to be a hit in the AFC Champions League, scoring three goals from just six matches, chipping in with two assists too.

Clement can oust Dessers by unleashing Rangers' £11m-rated gem

Rangers face a clash against Ayr United at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup tomorrow

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 9, 2024

Sakala is certainly enjoying his spell in Asia since moving from Rangers last summer, and it looks as though he has finally joined a team where he can get consistent first-team football and this has only improved his performances.

Securing £4m for a player who didn’t look like he was going to be in Beale’s future plans was a shrewd move, especially since he joined for free. It soon transpired that perhaps keeping him at Ibrox may have been the most logical thing to do.

Dessers has failed to shine during his short stint at Rangers so far and unless he improves his performances drastically, he may be looking for a new club in the summer.

Sakala, on the other hand, seems to be enjoying life in Saudi Arabia, and he is swiftly emerging as a key player for his new team, finally showcasing his true potential.

Hopefully, Clement spends his future funds on players who are going to hit the ground running at Ibrox and thus avoid wasting money on players such as Dessers.

Sakala may not have been a world-beater, but he always gave 100% and that is exactly what the Ibrox faithful expect from the players during every game.

West Brom takeover news: Reporter drops huge Guochuan Lai update

A significant update has emerged regarding the potential takeover of West Brom in the near future, courtesy of reliable reporter Lewis Cox.

West Brom takeover latest

The Baggies are battling hard to seal promotion from the Championship to the Premier League this season, sitting in the play-off positions as things stand.

There has been a big off-field distraction for Carlos Corberan and his players to deal with, however, with ongoing talk surrounding the proposed takeover of West Brom. It is a saga that continues to rumble on at a time when many supporters want to see Guochuan Lai's reign as owner come to an end, heralding the start of a new era at the club.

A recent report claimed that Aston Villa supporter Alex Hearn could become a part-owner of the Baggies, due to an unpaid loan to his company, as journalist Adrian Goldberg has explained:

"The rate of interest on that loan is five-per-cent a month – an incredible rate. West Brom Holdings own 88 per cent of West Bromwich Albion, and the suggestion was made that if the loan isn’t repaid, Hearn could convert that loan into shares in West Brom Holdings. It opens the possibility that West Brom Holdings is part-owned by a Villa fan. It’s just crazy. Keep an eye on that February 8 deadline – things may start moving, because that’s a publicly notified deadline."

Now, another update regarding the situation has dropped – one that suggests things could now be moving at a promising pace in terms of striking a deal.

Key West Brom takeover update

According to The Express & Star's Cox, the sale of West Brom could now be completed in a matter of weeks, with talks ongoing between Lai and Dr Shilen Patel.

West Bromwich Albion's home stadium, The Hawthorns.

"American businessman Dr Shilen Patel remains the frontrunner and is understood to be the preferred bidder of MSD Holdings, the firm which has loaned the Baggies around £28million since the start of last year.

"Negotiations with Florida-based Patel have been ongoing for a number of weeks and are understood to be at an advanced stage, though he is not the only contender with the Armenian-backed Noah Football Group also retaining a serious interest."

It is certainly encouraging to hear that talks are now advanced with Patel, assuming he is now the frontrunner to complete a purchase of West Brom. Fans will just be desperate to see things sorted sooner rather than later.

The quicker it happens, the stronger the Baggies' financial situation should hopefully look, generating more funds for new signings during the summer transfer window, and it will also allow Corberan and his squad to feel more settled, focusing on the job in hand of getting back into the Premier League.

West Brom close to signing “really good” new player for Corberan

The Baggies are in advanced talks with the ace in question.

Whoever ends up coming in, it is essential that they are considered the right person, with a wrong decision having the potential to set West Brom back greatly.

Chelsea could land instant Gallagher replacement by signing £80m "genius"

It has been a tough watch for Chelsea fans this season, as their expensively assembled side struggle to remain in the top half of the Premier League and look set to miss out on Champions League football for the second year running.

Mauricio Pochettino has not been able to steady the ship since his arrival in the summer, and in the process, his place in the dugout is starting to look more and more precarious.

What is sure to infuriate fans further is the news that the club are considering selling Conor Gallagher this month to help balance the books, despite the young Englishman arguably being the team's "best player" in 2023/24 – as described by pundit Jamie Carragher.

Chelsea make offer to hijack Man Utd transfer for “talented” £50m+ player

The Blues could get one over on their rivals…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 3, 2024

However, there could yet be a light at the end of this tunnel, as one of the players touted for a move to Stanford Bridge could be the perfect replacement for Gallagher: Inter Milan's Nicolò Barella.

Chelsea transfer news – Nicolò Barella

According to reports from Spain (via TEAMtalk), Chelsea are among several Premier League sides interested in signing the Inter star this year in a deal that would surely soften the blow of losing Gallagher.

The other sides interested in the Italian midfielder are title-chasing Liverpool and top-four competitors Newcastle United.

nicolo-barella-inter-milan-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

The 26-year-old was named Serie A's best midfielder last season, and with his deal at the San Siro set to expire in 2026, this month could be the perfect time to strike with an appealing offer.

However, Todd Boehly and Co will have to once more dip into their cavernous pockets if they want to get this deal done, as the report has revealed that Inter values their star player in the £70m-£80m price range – although, with Chelsea's recent spending habits, that's practically pocket money.

Nicolò Barella could be the perfect Conor Gallagher replacement

For as good as Gallagher has been this season, and he has been remarkable given the context, Barella would be a massive upgrade on the 23-year-old in almost every way and, with both playing in similar positions for their respective sides, Pochettino could swap one in for the other.

The Italian has played all 19 league games in central midfield this season, while the Englishman has played 12 of his 19 games in the same position.

The first area in which the former Cagliari ace has his contemporary beat this season is pure output, as in his 19 league games thus far, he has scored two goals and provided four assists. At the same time, Gallagher has failed to score a single goal in his 19 league outings, but he has registered four assists.

Nicolo Barella celebrates for Inter Milan.

When comparing the pairs' underlying numbers, things do not look much better for the Chelsea man.

The Italian "genius", as described by journalist Mike Piellucci, is miles ahead of the boyhood Chelsea fan when it comes to progressive passes and carries and has him comfortably beaten when it comes to being a goal threat himself.

The only area where the all-action Chelsea man comes out on top is in passing accuracy and ball recoveries. Still, with Moises Caicedo in the side and Romeo Lavia returning, it's unlikely that Barella would be too burdened with defensive responsibilities were he given a role in Pochettino's XI.

Ultimately, while selling Gallagher might initially upset fans, if the club could then spend the proceeds to sign a player football talent scout Jacek Kulig once described as "one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world", it would probably be worth it in the long run.

Mark Wood 'confident' of recovery but scans on ankle still unknown

Fast bowler was forced to leave field against Australia, and is still in a race against time to be fit for World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff26-May-2019Mark Wood’s World Cup hopes continue to hang in the balance with three days to go until England’s opening fixture against South Africa at The Oval, despite optimistic signals from within the England camp.He opted to leave the field midway through his bowling spell in England’s warm-up fixture against Australia at Ageas Bowl on Saturday rather than risk further aggravation, and underwent precautionary scan on the troublesome left ankle, the results of which have not yet been revealed.Although Wood himself is understood to be feeling more confident of a full recovery after 24 hours of rest, privately, England still fear that a joint that has been the source of endless disruption to Wood’s career could have flared up again at the most inopportune moment imaginable.Wood has bowled just 13.1 overs in the English season to date, after his return to action for Durham in the Royal London Cup was thwarted by consecutive washed-out matches. However, he bowled with pace and hostility in his solitary ODI against Pakistan earlier this month, regularly touching 90mph on his way to returns of 2 for 71.The entire England World Cup squad gathered in central London this morning to take part in the Ruth Strauss Foundation Westminster Mile, the inaugural charity event in memory of former England captain Andrew Strauss’ wife, who died of cancer in December. The entire group walked the mile, with the exception of Wood, who rested during the event, and Ben Stokes, who chose to jog the mile with his son and wife.England’s World Cup party was reduced to such bare bones in the midst of their Australia fixture that the fielding coach, Paul Collingwood, who turned 43 today, was pressed into action as a substitute fielder. However, there should be a fuller complement of players to choose from in Monday’s second warm-up against Afghanistan, which takes place at The Oval.Adil Rashid, who has been nursing a shoulder injury, was fit to bowl in the nets at The Oval, under the supervision of the bowling coach, Chris Silverwood, and a decision on whether he will take part in the match will be made in the morning.Joe Root, who missed the Australia game following the death of his grandfather (but took the field as a substitute fielder) is likely to play, alongside Jofra Archer, who also caused England some alarm when he jarred his leg while fielding in the same game.Liam Dawson, who split the skin on his right ring finger, is likely to be rested while the wound heals fully, while Chris Woakes, who played as a specialist batsman against Australia, is likely to have his first bowl since the Pakistan series.Meanwhile Eoin Morgan, the captain, is making encouraging progress following the “flake fracture” to his index finger that forced him out of the Australia match. He is expected to be sufficiently fit to take part in the World Cup opener, but may choose to rest against Afghanistan as well.
