Leeds have an "international-calibre" revelation who is blowing people away at Thorp Arch

Leeds United have made a positive beginning to the Premier League campaign and one of their players has been making a huge impact behind the scenes at Thorp Arch.

Leeds winger Daniel James ruled out due to injury

Unfortunately, Daniel Farke has confirmed that Leeds United winger Daniel James has been ruled out due to injury and is expected to be out for four to six weeks, leaving the Whites searching for an alternative out wide.

He said: “Daniel James will be out for a few weeks, he’s rolled his ankle sadly in training. The doctors say he’s likely out four to six weeks so realistically we expect him back just after the November international break. If he would be back before it would be a bonus and a surprise. It’s not great news.”

Joel Piroe may well come back into Farke’s thinking following his exploits last season. Either way, the German coach has shown he can compete with the Premier League elite on a tactical level this term, and he will be keen to build on a draw against Newcastle United that could’ve easily yielded three points.

Wilfried Gnonto and Harry Gray are also on the sidelines until after the international break, compounding Leeds United’s bad luck with absentees since returning to the top-flight.

As it stands, a return of eight points from their opening six league games has bred optimism that a positive season could be on the cards. That may well be the case, though Farke’s ability to make adjustments could determine how many results his side pick up across their coming run of fixtures.

While injuries continue to complicate matters, one of the Whites’ summer signings has been given credit for the impact he has made since arriving at Elland Road.

Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin's telling impact

Speaking to TBR, Graeme Bailey has talked up Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s impact at Leeds United behind the scenes, claiming his teammates have been impressed with how his arrival has raised standards alongside his general contribution on the field thus far.

He said: “Leeds are really happy with how he’s settling in. When you bring in good-quality players, they rub off on each other, and that benefits the rest of the team. Okafor and Calvert-Lewin, coming up from the Championship, are a massive step up in quality for Leeds.

Internal excitement amongst Leeds chiefs as new contract sealed behind the scenes

He has been touted to be Leeds’ “breakout player” of the season.

By
Callum Kemp

Oct 3, 2025

“They’re both international-calibre players, and their presence raises standards across the squad. Jack Harrison still has a role to play for Leeds. Calvert-Lewin may not be scoring as much as fans would like, but unless someone is hitting 40 goals a season, most forwards will face that criticism.

“Overall, they’re very happy with what they’ve seen so far. These players are influencing each other and the team positively, and they’ve been pretty impressive.”

One goal from five appearances for Calvert-Lewin probably doesn’t tell the full story. His enthusiasm, work rate and desire to lead the line efficiently has been an asset to Farke and has helped the Whites to pick up points over the last few weeks.

The England international looks somewhat revitalised after his spell at Everton came to and end, and supporters will hope he can start scoring regularly to offer the impact his general play deserves to yield.

"Sealed and signed" – Man Utd agree $1m deal and personal terms with 17 y/o

Manchester United is a club currently surrounded by question marks. Almost a year of poor performances in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim has led to speculation about his job security and Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS’s capability to turn the club around.

Amorim is yet to record back-to-back wins in the Premier League, and with fixtures like Liverpool and Tottenham coming up, it seems unlikely that he will win two in a row before the next international break.

While their managerial recruitment is in question, the new minority owners’ on-field recruitment has been a source of praise. In the senior team, players like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have added a spark to United’s attack that hasn’t been seen in recent years, and youngsters like Sekou Kone and of course the more experienced Amad Diallo give fans hope for the future.

Despite the transfer window not being open for several months, United are looking to continue their impressive recent recruitment and have already agreed a deal to bring in their next young talent.

United agree deal for Orozco

Earlier in the week, it was revealed that Manchester United were putting in early plans to bring in “very technical” 17-year-old Colombian midfielder Cristian Orozco. On Thursday morning, Fabrizio Romano revealed that contracts have been “sealed and signed”, and he concluded his X post with his “here we go” confirmation.

“Manchester United have now sealed and signed deal to bring in 17 year old Colombian talent Cristian Orozco,” the journalist said. “$1m transfer fee from Fortaleza in deal valid from summer 2026. MUFC lawyers approved all the contracts, deal coordinated by lead scout Antonaccio. Here we go.”

The Colombian League runs on a different schedule to the Premier League, played from January to December. This means that Orozco will leave halfway through their 2026 campaign to join United ahead of the Premier League’s 2026/27 season.

The defensive midfielder has impressed in both his club and National Youth setups. His first Colombia under-17 appearance came in January, and he has represented the side on nine occasions since then. This move is still a gamble for United as the youngster still hasn’t made his senior debut for Fortaleza, but their willingness to take the risk with Orozco is down to their faith in a United figure whose recent recruitment has been impressive.

INEOS putting faith in South America scouts

In his post, Romano specifically highlighted United lead scout Giuseppe Antonaccio as a crucial player in the deal. Antonaccio has been at the club since 2016 and focuses on scouting the South American market.

And his importance in recruiting young talent seems to be increasing. Along with the Orozco deal, he was also cited as being an important figure in bringing in United’s newest left back, Diego Leon. Leon has already made an impression at United and was kept with the first team despite initial plans to loan him out.

United have a history of being linked with talented youngsters from South America, but they have missed some major opportunities in recent years. The most notable of these was Moises Caicedo, who they reportedly could have signed for £5 million. Caicedo was eventually signed by Brighton and later moved to Chelsea for a then British transfer record of £115 million.

While it’s unlikely that Orozco, Leon or any other young talent they look to sign will surpass the £100 million mark, they could still provide some major benefits for the club. If they develop well, they could turn into important first-team players, and if we don’t hit the standards that United want, then their cheap price will make it easy for the club to sell them on for a profit at a time when they desperately need cash.

Luke Hollman's maiden hundred guides Middlesex in thriller

Key ninth-wicket stand hauls hosts over line in classic contest at Lord’s

Luke Hollman’s maiden century paved the way for Middlesex to snatch a dramatic victory as they edged past Kent in a see-saw Rothesay County Championship classic at Lord’s.Bowled out for 129 on the opening day, Kent looked favourites after setting a stiff target of 365 and reducing their hosts to 81 for three overnight – but Hollman’s diligent knock of 103 anchored a remarkable fightback. The 24-year-old shared key partnerships with Stephen Eskinazi (41) – who retired hurt with a back spasm but returned later – and Jack Davies (59), only for leg-spinner Matt Parkinson to turn the contest back in Kent’s favour, dismissing Hollman and Davies in quick succession. It needed an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 52 between Toby Roland-Jones and Zafar Gohar to wrap up a record Middlesex run-chase against Kent, the latter slog-sweeping Parkinson (three for 105) for six to secure victory with just one over remaining.A morning shower slightly delayed the resumption of Middlesex’s innings before not-out batters Hollman and Eskinazi knuckled down to blunt the visitors’ attack with few causes for alarm.Hollman overtook his partner by steering Kashif Ali to the point boundary and, even though Parkinson extracted some turn from the Pavilion End, the pair made steady progress during the first hour and half. However, they were separated when Eskinazi – having turned Parkinson behind square – clutched at his lower back while completing a routine single and grimaced with pain as he sank to the turf at the bowler’s end.The opener eventually limped back to the dressing-room, with replacement Ryan Higgins doing well to dig out an inswinging yorker from Jamal Richards shortly before another bout of drizzle curtailed the session.Hollman advanced beyond 50 for the sixth time in his red-ball career after lunch, sweeping and on-driving Parkinson for boundaries and then nudging a single to reach his individual landmark as Middlesex’s target dipped below 200.But it was the former England leg-spinner who achieved a breakthrough, reacting quickly to deflect Hollman’s straight drive onto the wicket with non-striker Higgins scrambling in vain to make his ground. The run-out raised Kent spirits, with more close fielders ushered in as Parkinson was joined by Jack Leaning in a spin-only offensive, capturing another wicket as Tawanda Muyeye raced out from slip to snare a looping edge off bat and pad of Ben Geddes.Kashif returned to share the new ball with George Garrett, who was hoisted over the rope at long leg by Davies but almost accounted for Hollman on the stroke of tea, a clipped half-volley fractionally eluding the diving midwicket fielder.Hollman kept his cool to complete his ton from 184 balls and that was the signal for Davies to press the accelerator, slamming Garrett for a six and three fours during a single over that cost 29 in all.A reverse sweep for four off Parkinson took Davies to his half-century and simultaneously lifted Middlesex’s total above 300 – yet the pendulum appeared to swing again as Parkinson picked up two wickets in three balls.Hollman was first to go, snapped up at short leg before Davies holed out to deep midwicket and, having returned with a runner, Eskinazi could increase his score by just two before Joey Evison pinned him lbw with 51 still required.Gohar and Roland-Jones (23 not out) gradually whittled those down, while Evison (three for 71) and Parkinson maintained the pressure in tandem as the overs ticked away and shadows began to lengthen. With five needed and seven balls remaining, Gohar (30 not out) took on Parkinson and dispatched the ball over the short boundary to seal Middlesex’s second win of the season.

Paul Farbrace: Hundred windfall will enable counties to plan for 'cricket, not finance'

Sussex coach calls for a more streamlined T20 competition, and a reboot for 50-overs

Alan Gardner25-Mar-2025Sussex head coach, Paul Farbrace, believes English cricket has a golden opportunity to overhaul the structure of the men’s county game with a blueprint that is “right for cricket and not right for finance”, in the wake of the ECB securing an unprecedented windfall from its sale of equity in the Hundred. The process to attract outside investment in the eight Hundred franchises ended last month, with around £500 million in line to be distributed once exclusivity agreements are reached. Non-host counties such as Sussex could receive in the region of £25-30 million, with the expectation that a substantial one-off dividend can help “recapitalise the county game for the next 20-25 years”, in the words of ECB chief executive, Richard Gould.Farbrace, who previously held the role of director of cricket at Warwickshire and has coached at Yorkshire and Kent as well as England Men, suggested that the extra financial security should enable cricket’s decision-makers – in particular the county chairs and chief executives who would be required to vote through change – to grasp the nettle and redesign the county schedule so that it produces the best players for England and the best spectacle for fans.Farbrace oversaw Sussex’s return to Division One last season•Getty Images”We’ve never had a better opportunity in the game, with the money that’s coming from the Hundred, to actually have a county plan for the summer that absolutely is right for cricket and not right for finance,” he said. “One of the challenges we’ve always had, you’ve got your directors of cricket and coaches who want less cricket, more preparation time; you’ve got your majority of chairman of clubs who are voted in by the members who want Championship cricket; and then you’ve got your chief executive who wants T20 because they want to make money. If you’ve got that within your own county, it’s very difficult within the game [as a whole].”We’re now in a position where the money that’s coming in means that, actually, every county should be able to say, ‘this is what we want in terms of county cricket’. What is best for English cricket? How are we going to produce players to play for England? How are we going to have the best spectacle? So when you have your games, you want your best players available. We’ve never had a better time to do it. The money that’s coming from the Hundred should set aside any financial concerns about we need to play lots of T20 to make money. It should now be about what’s the best structure for the game of cricket in this country going forward.”I think all the people that are going to get around the table – our chair, Jon Filby, and others – they’re going to make good decisions based on what’s right for the game, as opposed to balancing books. I’d say that this Hundred money has absolutely come at the right time for the game.”The ECB is set to embark on its latest attempt to restructure the domestic season, almost three years after the recommendations of Andrew Strauss’ high-performance review – which called for a cut in the number of Championship and T20 Blast fixtures – were rejected the counties. Since then, issues with the fixture list have only increased, amid concerns about player welfare and the rise in T20 franchise competitions taking place during the English summer.Related

Six-team Championship Division One and Blast reduction among recommendations of High-Performance Review

The failure of England Men at each of the last two ICC ODI tournaments has also led to questions about the sidelining of 50-over cricket, which is currently played in the shadow of the Hundred. Farbrace, who alongside Trevor Bayliss oversaw England’s rise to No. 1 in the ODI rankings ahead of their 2019 World Cup triumph, is among those who advocate shifting the List A competition to the start of the season, alongside an overall reduction in first-class and T20 cricket.”I think we need to be playing a minimum of 12 Championship games,” he said. “I think that’s the ideal. I would play 10 T20 games, because I think we would all far rather have five home games that we can really make a big fuss of in the Blast. And then 50-over cricket, we either take it seriously and we treat it properly, or we carry on doing what we do at the moment, which is effectively a second XI competition.”It’s no good us kicking the England team about 50-over cricket performances if we don’t play 50-over cricket. So I think that the best way to do it would be to start a bit later in April, play 50-over cricket for that last two weeks of April into May, and then play Championship cricket, 12 games, 10 games in the Blast. Then we just need to find something to do in August when the Hundred is going on. That’s where my super plan falls down a little bit, because I’m not quite sure what we’re doing then – whether we play a bit more 50-over, or why don’t we have a second division of the Hundred?”But I think 50-over cricket, if we’re going to play it, we need to play it properly and get the best players involved. It seems to be the back end of April [is] the best time. And I would suggest you can probably produce better one-day pitches than you can four-day pitches at that time of the year.”Tymal Mills, Sussex’s T20 captain, was in agreement about reducing the number of Blast games, suggesting that it could help alleviate players’ concerns around travel and playing back-to-back fixtures, as well as enabling the ECB to stage Finals Day closer to the end of the group stage – rather than with a six-week gap, as was the case in 2024 and will be again in 2025.”I think 14 games is too long,” Mills said. “The IPL is the only other competition in the world that plays a 14-game group stage. The Blast, obviously, we play the seven home games because the counties need the money and I completely understand that. But from a cricketing point of view, it does tend to drag on a little bit, and you lose that quality a little bit over the course of 14 games. Whereas if you had 10, as Farby said, each game has that bit more on it, each night is a bit more special and carries a bit more weight, whereas in the current format you can lose six games and still maybe go through to quarter-finals. Also then, if you are able to reduce it to 10 games, you hopefully can get it done in in one block.”

Ruben Amorim warned 'alarming' tactics 'will be his downfall' at Man Utd as Alan Shearer claims under-fire Portuguese was 'out-schooled' by Brentford boss Keith Andrews

Alan Shearer heavily criticised Ruben Amorim's tactical rigidity following another poor Manchester United showing away at Brentford on Saturday. The Newcastle legend believes United's predictable approach makes them easy to play against, and that Amorim's inflexibility could cost him his job.

Pressure continues to build on Amorim

Manchester United's form has been wildly inconsistent under Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat in November last year. Despite significant investment in new players during the summer transfer window, United are 14th in the Premier League table after just six games of the new season, with their latest setback coming in the form of the 3-1 defeat to Brentford. The criticism of Amorim is mounting and questions are being asked about his ability to turn things around.

AdvertisementGetty'He's right, everyone else is wrong'

Amorim's refusal to budge from his preferred 3-4-3 system and defensive substitutions have raised the most eyebrows, with Shearer among those who believe the Portuguese is trying to fit too many square pegs into round holes. The former Newcastle and Blackburn striker said when reacting to United's latest defeat on : "Brentford without doubt had their plan. He [Amorim] was out-schooled by Keith Andrews, and what Brentford did. It really will be his downfall, unfortunately for him, because he’s not going to budge. He’s right, everyone else is wrong, I guess.

"It was alarming what he was doing, moving so many different players around. the subs he brings on, moving right-centre-back into centre-back, middle of centre-back into left-centre-back. Then [Bryan] Mbeumo was right-wing-back. And then Mason Mount came on as a 10 for four minutes. Then he brought [Joshua] Zirkzee on, and then moved Mount to left-wing-back. It’s like, goodness me, what on earth is happening here? It’s incredible."

Why INEOS may be delaying sack call

Shearer went on to suggest that United's part owners INEOS, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are only delaying Amorim's sacking to save face. "I genuinely believe that the owners, or the people are running the club at the minute, have made that many errors in the last two years or 18 months since they’ve been there, it would look terrible to admit another error," he added.

"And secondly, whether you look at the ticket increase, whether you look at people losing their jobs, whether you look at the new stadium, whether you look at paying for Dan Ashworth and then sacking him, and then his contract being paid up, then for them to go and say, ‘Actually, we went hell bent on getting this manager and paying a fee for him and demanding he comes now, rather than when he wanted to come’ for them to now say you’re firing him, and then pay out another huge chunk of wedge to for someone to lose their contract. I genuinely believe that’s probably one of the reasons why he’s still there, because they’re not any better, they’re not getting any better. They look miles off it."

AFPSunderland next: Win or bust for Amorim

Amorim has only taken 34 points from his 33 Premier League games in charge of United to date, and has yet to oversee back-to-back wins. The former Sporting CP boss faces intense pressure to improve the Red Devils' performances and results immediately. Upcoming fixtures will be crucial in determining his future at the club, starting with next Saturday's home fixture against newly promoted Sunderland.

Romano: Man City in talks to sign £11m-a-year star, personal terms agreed

Following yet another defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City have now reportedly commenced negotiations to sign a big-money megastar for Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola: Man City missed "simple things"

Whether it’s been Ange Postecoglou, Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte or others in charge, Tottenham have remained Man City’s bogey team in one of the most bizarre common occurrences in Premier League history.

They’ve won a historic treble together whilst also winning four consecutive league titles. Yet, when Spurs come to town, the Citizens consistently endure an afternoon to forget. And, as ever, that proved to be the case this weekend.

This time, it was Thomas Frank in charge as the North London club hit City on the counter before enjoying unexpected control to secure what was, in the end, a comfortable 2-0 victory. On the end of defeat courtesy of Tottenham once more, Guardiola lamented that his side missed the “simple things” against the Lilywhites.

The second goal would have particularly disappointed the Spaniard after new signing James Trafford conceded possession in his own area before Joao Palhinha fired home.

Whilst it will be a learning curve for the young Englishman and one that the likes of John Stones have suffered in the past, Man City are reportedly unwilling to let the same mistake happen twice.

Man City commence talks to sign Donnarumma

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man City have now commenced talks to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma after agreeing personal terms with the Italian.

The Citizens are now in club-to-club negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth less than their initial €50m (£43m) asking price.

Donnarumma has already said farewell to PSG fans and is on the move this month. Whether it is City that secure his signature still depends on Ederson’s future, however.

Reports have indicated that the Brazilian could be heading to Galatasaray and the fact that he’s been benched at the Etihad would suggest that move is very possible, but the Turkish club have less than 10 days to get their deal over the line.

Replacing one of the best goalkeepers in Premier League history will be no easy task for City, but signing a megastar who reportedly earns £11m-a-year would instantly ease any concerns in Manchester.

Better move than Grealish: Everton looking to sign "unstoppable" £17m CF

Hill Dickinson Stadium is now officially open for business.

On Saturday, Everton’s senior men’s team played at Bramley-Moore Dock for the very first time, although they’re still waiting for their first goal at their new home, beaten 1-0 in a pre-season friendly by Roma.

This brought to an end a rather miserable pre-season for David Moyes’ men, winning just one of seven fixtures, this against EFL League One side Port Vale, scoring just six goals in these matches.

Thus, it is no wonder Moyes is seeking attacking reinforcements ahead of his team’s Premier League opener against Leeds United at Elland Road next Monday night, so could the Toffees sign an exciting young striker?

Everton's need for firepower

With stalwarts Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucouré having both been released following the expiration of their contracts, Everton were always going to need to add attacking threat to their squad, having scored a miserly 42 goals in the Premier League last season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, the Blues have so far signed striker Thierno Barry from Villarreal and attacking midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea, but more is required.

Thus, they have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the signing of Jack Grealish on a season-long loan, a move that Graham Ruthven of Total Soccer Show believes will be “exciting”.

Manchester City's JackGrealishbefore the match

Meantime, according to a report from Spain, Everton are “interested” in signing striker Franculino Djú, adding that he is valued at around £17m by FC Midtjylland, with Roma and RB Leipzig also considering a move.

Sport Witness add that the 21-year-old’s performances in the Danish Superligaen have ‘attracted interest’ from several of Europe’s top clubs, but could Everton steal a march and bring the youngster to Merseyside?

What Franculino Djú would bring to Everton

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Franculino joined Benfica’s academy at the age of 15, but never made a senior appearance for the Portuguese giants, instead moving to Midtjylland on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, with Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout stating that the Danish side hit the “absolute jackpot”.

That’s because, to date, he has scored 40 goals in 79 appearances for the Wolves, thereby averaging a goal every 118 across all competitions.

FC Midtjylland's Franculino Dju celebrates scoring their first goal

Ten of these goals have come in European competition, including a hat-trick against Omonia 12 months ago, scoring seven goals in six appearances so far this season, bagging a hat-trick when Sønderjyske visited Herning, also breaking the deadlock during last Thursday’s Europa League qualifying victory over Fredrikstad.

The aforementioned Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labels him “unstoppable”, adding elsewhere that he has a “big future ahead”.

Farzam Abolhosseini of Tipsbladet asserts that he was the “highest-scoring teenager” across Europe last season, while Joost van der Leij documents how ‘finishing’ is the youngster’s primary asset.

Meantime, writer Tom Maston praises his “impressive strike-rate”, with Jake Entwistle of Scouted adding that he is a ‘well-rounded’ centre-forward, comparing him to the in-demand Alexander Isak, a man who could also be set for a move to Merseyside.

So, let’s analyse his statistics in the Superligaen this season so far.

As the table documents, Dju has absolutely been on fire at the start of this season, scoring seven times in all competitions already, adding to the 11 Superligaen goals he bagged last season, netting 16 times overall.

If any Evertonians are sceptical, worth noting that, according to Global Football Rankings, Denmark’s top division is the 13th strongest league in the world, just below the EFL Championship and the Eredivisie, so he is performing at a relatively high level.

So, why would he be a better signing than possible future teammate Grealish?

FC Midtjylland's Dario Osorio celebrates scoring their first goal withFranculinoDju

Well, the England international is set to join Everton on loan but an expensive one, with reports noting that this is set to cost the Toffees around £15m in a loan fee and wages, with Grealish currently earning around £300,000-per-week.

Franculino, on the other hand, could prove to be a bargain at just £17m in the long run.

Manchester City's JackGrealishduring the warm up before the match

If the Blues are going to get back to where their supporters believe they belong, challenging for European qualification, they’re going to have to work smarter in the transfer market, buying lesser-known players for low fees, before ultimately selling them on at a huge profit.

Franculino certainly fits that profile, with the striker seemingly ticking both boxes, boasting enough quality to improve Everton’s team right now.

Meanwhile, at 21 years old, his value will surely increase exponentially over time, while Grealish only does the former. The experienced England international has barely kicked a ball in recent years and he’s out of form.

Dju, on the other hand, is bang in form.

West Brom could repeat their Maja magic by signing EFL star for £0

It’s a step into the unknown for West Bromwich Albion next season with Ryan Mason at the helm.

Appointing the 33-year-old rookie boss is a bold next step that might well pay off for the Baggies, but he will have his work cut out for him from the get-go, with the likes of Grady Diangana, who had been a part of the furniture at the Hawthorns for some time, now heading out the exit door.

After those high-profile departures soured the mood somewhat, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur coach has been backed, notably with Aune Heggebo leaving Brann behind for a fee around the £4.7m mark to join the Championship side.

The additions up top might not grind to a halt here, however, despite the Nordic striker’s lavish fee, as more attacking signings look to be prioritised.

West Brom's next moves in the market

Diangana isn’t the only notable name in attack that could desert the Hawthorns, with Mikey Johnston still likely despondent after a £5m move to Flamengo fell through at the last minute.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Spurs youngster Mikey Moore might well be on the West Brom shopping list to bolster down this depleted left-hand side, therefore, but Heggebo could also have competition up top very shortly if the West Midlands outfit power on to snap up an EFL-experienced striker for free.

Indeed, a new report by the Sheffield Star has revealed that Rhian Brewster is unlikely to pen a new contract at his current employers Sheffield United, which will open the door for a suitor to snap up the ex-Liverpool forward for nothing.

The Star further indicates that Sunderland are looking at the hit-and-miss Blades striker, but a report by SportsBoom right at the start of July also suggested that the Baggies were keen on a move for the free agent.

This interest might well accelerate back into motion now this exclusive development has come to light, with West Brom perhaps eager to work their Josh Maja magic again on the former Blades number seven in unearthing a goalscoring diamond in the rough.

How West Brom can work their Maja magic on Brewster

Before transforming into West Brom’s number one option in attack, Maja had been through the wringer during his often bumpy playing days.

The one-time Nigeria international would initially come onto the radar of English football fans when rising the ranks at Sunderland, with Maja powering home a promising seven strikes from 29 Sunderland U23 appearances, before taking it up a notch even further when finding the back of the net 17 times in the senior picture.

However, everything started to unravel when he left the comforts of the Stadium of Light behind, with his spell at Bordeaux ridden with injuries, whilst then struggling to find his feet back on English soil with the likes of Stoke City and Fulham.

West Brom have managed to get the best out of the unfortunate 26-year-old again, with an impressive return of 12 strikes coming his way last season in Championship action, but he is still prone to an extended stay in the treatment room.

Brewster has an eerily similar story to Maja’s, considering the 25-year-old once had the world at his feet when leading the line for Liverpool in the U23 scene, before finding the men’s game to be a cruel beast.

He has since found his way back on the horse despite an injury-plagued few seasons in South Yorkshire, with a promising seven goal contributions coming his way last season, which led to his then-Blades boss Chris Wilder heralding him as “amazing” for his perseverance.

He might well be Mason’s very own Maja-like project if a move is sealed, with the London-born forward amazingly ahead of his Nigerian counterpart in terms of second-tier strikes bagged, as seen in his 18 strikes and counting, next to Maja’s 15.

With Brewster missing only seven clashes last campaign through injury, the hope will be that he can kick on and reclaim his former Reds magic – which saw him net a blistering 13 U23 goals at Anfield – only this time around it could secure a promotion in the senior game.

Liverpool "clearly ahead" of Chelsea in race to sign "magnificent" £60m ace

Liverpool are “clearly ahead” of rivals Chelsea in the race to sign a “magnificent” player in the summer transfer window.

Kerkez to join Liverpool this week

The Reds have now officially signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a British-record £116m move, in a piece of business that has made the rest of Europe sit up and take notice.

There is unlikely to be a bigger signing made this summer, with Wirtz considered one of the world’s top attacking players, but Liverpool are not expected to be done there, still planning on adding fresh faces to the squad.

Florian Wirtz

It looks as though Milos Kerkez will be the next name through the door at Anfield in the coming days, with journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming over the weekend that a minor issue has been ironed out and that he could be unveiled as soon as Tuesday.

David Ornstein of The Athletic has gone one better, however, saying that a medical is now expected to be done on Monday after flying into the UK, with the deal set to be worth £40m for the Bournemouth left-back.

Liverpool leading race to sign "magnificent" ace

Now, reliable Sky Sports journalist Sacha Tavolieri [via Sport Witness] has said that Liverpool are “clearly ahead” of Chelsea and others in the battle to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana this summer.

He states that the Reds’ head of recruitment, Barry Hunter, admires the 20-year-old and has him at the top of his list of summer targets. The Premier League champions will need to sell Federico Chiesa first, though, and Fofana could possibly cost as much as £60m.

Lyon's Malick Fofana

Fofana could be a brilliant long-term signing for Liverpool, with scout Jacek Kulig describing him as a “magnificent” prospect last year.

At just 20 years of age, the young Belgian has already bagged 22 goal contributions (15 goals and seven assists) in 62 appearances for Lyon, also winning one cap for Belgium at senior level, and those numbers should only improve as he matures as a player.

Predominantly a left-sided attacking player, it seems slightly strange that Liverpool would push so hard for Fofana, though, especially as Chiesa is right-sided in general.

Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo appear to be staying put, so it would arguably only make sense for the Reds to sign the Lyon ace if one of them moves on, or if Arne Slot sees him as a backup option to Mohamed Salah on the right. But his talent is undeniable, so the idea of him in a Liverpool shirt is exciting.
