Leeds can sign their own Raheem Sterling in Eberechi Eze

According to recent reports, Leeds are interested in signing QPR starlet Eberechi Eze this summer.

What’s the word?

Eze has been in superb form for the Championship side this season, racking up 14 goals and eight assists in the league. That has prompted speculation he could be heading for the exit door, with reports now suggesting Leeds are keen on having him lead their Premier League return next season.

The Sun have claimed Marcelo Bielsa has identified the 22-year-old as someone who can bring a creative spark to Elland Road, and that the Whites are ready to outbid the likes of Tottenham and West Ham in the race to sign him.

In fact, it’s further suggested that Leeds actually informed QPR of their intentions of placing a bid for the England youth international back in January if they achieved promotion this season.

Sterling 2.0

It’s fair to say that Eze has earned a lot of plaudits in his short career as a first-team football for QPR.

Mark Warburton hailed him as a “tremendous talent” who has “no limits” in just how far he can go, whilst the Hoops’ former assistant manager Mark Bircham said: “He goes past players easier than Raheem Sterling did. Sterling would beat players with pace or do a trick or a chop – it’s all dynamic movements, but Ebere Eze just glides past players.”

With Sterling also having come through the QPR academy, that may be a simple comparison to make. But if you dig beneath that, you can see just how comparable the two are.

As per Whoscored, he has averaged a stunning three dribbles per game in the Championship, whilst also attempting 2.2 shots per match too. And with his tally of 14 goals this season, he clearly has the goal-scoring knack that Sterling has developed, with the latter netting 19 in the Premier League for Manchester City.

Speaking about his dribbling ability, Danny Higginbotham remarked: “You would not want him one on one. He has that knack of gliding past players with ease. He has so many assists because he attracts so much attention which creates space for his teammates.”

If Leeds manage to sign him this summer, then they could very well have their own Sterling in their hands.

Quiz: Can you answer these 10 questions about Roberto Martinez’s stint as Everton boss?

Having just won the FA Cup in the same season that his side was relegated, it was difficult to get a real gauge on the true level of Roberto Martinez as a coach when he arrived at Everton in 2013.

The former midfielder quickly quietened the doubters in his first year at the club though with the Toffees enjoying an excellent season under the Spaniard who had got them playing an exciting brand of football.

Unfortunately for Martinez though, his luck began to turn and his side endured two rather forgettable seasons before he was dismissed in 2016.

The setback has not done his career too much damage though and the 46-year-old is now the manager of the Belgium national team, a side that he guided to the semi-finals of the 2018 world cup.

Here, we look back on his stint in the North West with Everton and see how much you can remember about the Spaniard’s disappointing reign…

Stuart Dallas reveals the training regime set for Leeds squad

Leeds United utility man Stuart Dallas has shed some light on the training programme the squad have been put on during lockdown, in an interview with the BBC.

What did he say?

Dallas has been central to Leeds’ promotion push this season, starting all 37 of their Championship fixtures in a variety of different roles.

Like the rest of the squad the suspension of the football season has seen players stuck at home, where they have had to manage their own fitness levels and stay in shape.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is also renowned for his exacting standards in training and Dallas has revealed that the players have been told to send in pictures of their weight every day.

“For me, no. It’s how much you want it, you have to take it upon yourself to be professional in what you do,” he told the BBC.

“If you’re going into the fridge and snacking all the time, of course you’re going to put weight on. So, you’ve got to be professional, stick to what you would do.

“I go back to a routine, I get up in the morning, have my breakfast and I like to get my exercise done early, so that it’s similar to what it would be at training.

“Having to send our weights in every day, keeping in contact with the nutritionist and the sports science guys, it’s really helpful and keeps you on track.”

Model professional

Dallas has proven himself as a real model professional this season, playing week in week out in a variety of different positions, including central midfield, full-back and on the wing.

Having the Norther Ireland international fully fit for the season’s return will, therefore, be crucial and it will be a big boost for fans of the Elland Road club to hear that the 28-year-old is following Bielsa’s instructions.

Man Utd right not to give up on pursuit of Fiorentina beast Nikola Milenkovic

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Italian publication La Repubblica (via Sport Witness), Manchester United remain interested in Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic.

What’s the word?

Reports in recent months had suggested the Red Devils were interested in signing him in the summer as a potential alternative to Harry Maguire.

Now, La Repubblica reportedly claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are still interested in securing his signature, with his current team valuing him at “over €40m (£34.2m)”. It adds that both United and Atletico Madrid have already moved for him and are following his progress, although Fiorentina are understood to be reluctant to let him go anytime in the near future.

Perfect partner for Maguire

In the summer, it was seemingly deemed a case of either Milenkovic or Maguire. But having ended up signing the latter for a world record fee for a defender, it may be the best time to revisit their interest in the Fiorentina defender.

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 5, the Serbia international would make for quite the physically intimidating partnership with Maguire. The duo would be massive units that opposition players may fear getting into a tussle with, and that could be the kind of psychological advantage that could pay huge dividends for the Red Devils.

Maguire’s current partner at Old Trafford, Victor Lindelof, has not been in the greatest form this season either. As per Whoscored, the Swede has an average match rating of just 6.62 in the Premier League – the lowest of any domestic campaign in his entire career. His tackling numbers have dropped from 1.3 to 0.8 per game, whilst his pass accuracy has similarly fallen by 4.1%.

It therefore makes United’s continued interest in Milenkovic perfectly understandable, and that should perhaps provoke them into taking transfer action on their long-term target.

Man City fans react to reports linking Bayern Munich with Pep Guardiola

Manchester City fans have reacted to the latest news that Bayern Munich are seeking the signature of Pep Guardiola from the Premier League champions.

The report from Sport Bild claims that Guardiola remains amongst a shortlist of managers for Bayern and that their bosses have been in regular contact with him ever since he left the club.

The news comes not long after City fans vented their anger at the German giants for their pursuit of star winger Leroy Sane. Now, it seems that once again Bayern Munich are getting on the wrong side of a lot of City supporters.

Guardiola was at Bayern prior to his move to Manchester and his record speaks for itself. Over in Germany, the Spaniard won three Bundesliga titles and two German Cups, so there is, of course, no surprise as to why the club want him back.

City fans, however, desire the opposite. Some of the fans have expressed their annoyance at Bayern again, whilst many other supporters have scoffed at the prospect of his departure.

Here’s what some of the fans have had to say…

Newcastle interest in Habibou Diallo could solve their concerns in attack

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Newcastle are interested in Metz’s Habibou Diallo, according to The Express.

What’s the latest?

It is being reported that the Magpies are currently scouting the striker as he has been in fine form over the last few months, scoring the goals to get his side promoted from Ligue 2 last season.

His impressive displays aren’t just being noticed by Newcastle, however, and it is believed that Leicester City are preparing a bid for his services.

An asking price of just £7m is all the French outfit are thought to want for the striker, and that makes him a realistic signing for almost any Premier League club, and a bargain considering he is the joint second-highest scorer in Ligue 1 currently.

The Express also report that Steve Bruce is to finalise his plans for January regarding transfer targets, and given his form it is not surprising that the 24-year-old is on the shortlist.

Alternative to Joelinton

Diallo meets a lot of the requirements the club is likely looking for in their recruitment.

He is young, in good form, and available for a great price – a drop in the ocean compared to the £40m fee spent on Joelinton.

Bruce lacks effective options up-front and that has resulted in the Brazilian starting every game so far, but too often there has been a lack of quality on the bench to change things in Newcastle’s favour.

Last week against Wolves that even resulted in Dwight Gayle being given game time, despite being an outcast for most of the summer, but in Diallo the club have targeted a player who would likely signal the end of Gayle’s time at St James’ Park.

The Senegal international has scored eight goals in 12 league games this term and they have come in a variety of ways. He is accomplished with his head but excels at running beyond the last defender – so could work well with a target man like Joelinton.

He would also provide the Magpies’ attack with an alternative off the bench, using his pace and movement to worry defenders like he did with goals against Montpellier and Toulouse this season.

The support he would provide Joelinton would also be a nice change for the striker, who has too often been left isolated in attack, an issue which has likely caused concern for Bruce.

If the Newcastle boss can add the striker and get both him and the Brazilian firing then he will likely improve what has been a major issue in his side, with just nine goals scored in 11 league games this year.

Wolves’ Conor Coady faces huge setback to international hopes after Mings debut

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

England moved closer to Euro 2020 qualification on Monday night as Gareth Southgate’s side thrashed Bulgaria 6-0 with purpose after having to deal with shameful scenes of racism at the Vasil Levski Stadium.

The Three Lions are now three points clear at the top of Group A with just two games remaining in November.

Aston Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings earned his first England cap and repaid the national team manager with a superb showing, keeping a clean sheet while being faced with the brunt of the racial slurs from the home crowd.

His interview after the game showed his phenomenal attitude, only going to display his leadership qualities in further detail.

In doing so, Mings has undoubtedly cemented his name alongside last summer’s World Cup hero Harry Maguire in the heart of the England defence for the foreseeable future.

As a result, any hopes Conor Coady had of achieving a similar feat have surely just started to drift even further away.

Wolves supporters themselves have thrown the 26-year-old’s name into the equation at times this season, while The Daily Mail claimed earlier in the year that he was in serious contention to be called up after his role in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Are Gareth Southgate’s Aston Villa roots the reason behind the Wolves player in the video below being overlooked?…

Per SofaScore, Mings won 100% of his aerial duels, registered a 95% passing accuracy, as well as recording one clearance, one tackle, and one interception.

Michael Keane was the man to make way for the Villa star, but after that showing, there’s surely no way Southgate goes back to the Everton defender – especially after fans and pundits alike blasted him for his role in the Czech Republic defeat.

If that’s the case, then it will be a mightily hard task for Coady to even get his name into the England fold. He hasn’t featured at international level since 2013 when he was part of Peter Taylor’s U20 World Cup squad.

It certainly gives Villa some bragging rights over their Midlands rivals too.

Barcelona’s Ernesto Valverde taking strange approach with Junior Firpo

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Last weekend, Barcelona were put to the sword by Granada. Matchday five brought more woe as the Catalans suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to their hosts.

But despite a bad collective performance, one player, in particular, endured a difficult 45 minutes.

Junior Firpo was the man called up to replace Jordi Alba as the Spaniard is still recovering from his recent injury. But the 24-year-old was not at his best and was directly responsible for Granada’s first goal.

Other than that, he also registered two tackles, one interception and one clearance.

Nevertheless, Valverde was clearly not impressed and he substituted Firpo at half-time, slotting Nelson Semedo on the left and dropping Sergi Roberto from midfield into the right-back position.

But despite that mistake early on in the game, Firpo still played well, all things considered.

Thus, Valverde’s substitution can only negatively affect his mentality and motivation.

Strangely, Firpo was then reinstated to the starting XI for the next game against Villarreal at the Camp Nou, and fortunately produced a much better display.

The young defender tallied four tackles and one clearance to his name, immediately proving the early fluffs in the previous clash were just jitters and him getting used to a new environment.

But that only puts Valverde’s man-management under further scrutiny, having singled out a new signing who – one mistake aside – had performed well for his new team.

Of course, good performances need to be rewarded and likewise, bad performances need to be punished. But for a newcomer to the club who was making his first start back then, that punishment seemed just a tad too harsh.

Not to mention that it sends the completely wrong message to the youngsters, especially considering that the senior players don’t seem to get the same treatment.

Take Luis Suarez, for example. He turned in an underwhelming display against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and yet, he not only played that game in full but also started and finished the game against Granada, as well.

Maybe this won’t affect Firpo all that negatively in the long run but this type of management by Valverde is definitely not the way to move forward.

It will create a culture of fear where players are less inclined to take risks, concerned a mistake could cost them a place in the team – or even result in a very public hooking off.

We can only wait and see what it does for the 24-year-old in future fixtures, but Valverde can’t continue ruling with a reactionary fist.
