Newcastle: Caulkin drops manager claim

Athletic journalist George Caulkin has dropped a big Newcastle update, regarding the managerial situation at the club.

What’s the talk?

In response to a question about Paulo Fonseca on an Athletic post-match Q&A, Caulkin made it clear that PIF are yet to make a decision on Steve Bruce’s replacement. He wrote:

“I was told last night that things aren’t as advanced as that and that no formal decisions have been taken. I think there’s still a way to go in this process and more people to speak to.”

This comes after The Telegraph reported that Newcastle are ready to offer a £6m contract to the Portuguese head coach, with Caulkin playing down those claims.

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will be buzzing by this update from Caulkin as it leaves the possibility of Erik ten Hag taking over at St. James’ Park alive and kicking. Whilst Fonseca could be a solid appointment and has an impressive C.V, the Ajax boss has now emerged as a potential candidate.

The Magpies are reportedly looking to bring Marc Overmars in as director of football and he would like to bring his fellow countryman with him. However, Fonseca coming in would, obviously, rule out any chance of ten Hag coming to Tyneside, which is why this response from Caulkin could leave fans feeling rather excited.

PIF are taking their time with this decision and are prepared to play the long game, which could benefit Newcastle if they are able to attract someone of ten Hag’s talents. That is not to say the Portuguese would not be a solid manager for the club, as he averaged 1.77 points per game in charge of Roma in Serie A across 101 matches. He showed that he can manage a top club and do a respectable job.

As for the Dutchman, he has averaged 2.34 points per game whilst in charge of Ajax in the Eredivise across 180 matches, winning five trophies along the way. He has also led the club to 14 wins in 27 Champions League group stage or knockout matches, showing that he can manage a team successfully at the very top level.

Therefore, supporters will be delighted that Caulkin’s comments leave the door open for a potentially more exciting manager to arrive as Bruce’s replacement ahead of Fonseca. PIF are still looking at other candidates and, hopefully, Overmars will be brought in as the director of football and be able to bring his current employee along with him.

Noel Whelan raves over Moyes transfer hint

Speaking to Football Insider, BBC pundit Noel Whelan has heaped praise on West Ham United manager David Moyes after the 58-year-old revealed his transfer plan for the Hammers.

The Lowdown: Moyes outlines future plan…

Speaking to the press (via football.london), the Irons boss dropped a hint on his plans for the future of West Ham in a message.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-updates-2/” title=”West Ham updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Moyes explained that he wants the club to be looking for ‘young British talented players’ as well as recruiting from outside of the UK.

“I’d like to have a bigger West Ham presence around the streets of London but probably around the whole country as well because I want us to be looking for young British talented players, as well as the work we need to do overseas,” he said.

“I can only look back at the years I had at Everton when I thought I had a really good recruitment team. But that took time as well, it didn’t happen over one or two windows and I’ve got to give Rob [Newman] time.”

The Latest: Whelan thrilled…

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan has praised Moyes for this mindset and backs him to follow it through.

“That that’s his blueprint already since he came into the club,” the pundit explained.

“It’s been really successful, we’ve seen how its worked, the core of the team is British. They know the Premier League, they know English football.

“They don’t need time to bed in, they don’t need any time to get used to the conditions and change of lifestyle. It’s right there.

“Every player that he’s got British-wise has been exceptional, they really have. You can see the mentality change and the culture change straight away at the football club.

“It’s been successful so that blueprint that he came into with West Ham, why change something that’s working? He’s still looking to get these young British players into the football club.

“They will be the core, they’ll be the future, they know their mentality, they can handle English football. I think he has done an amazing job. He really, really has.”

The Verdict: Promising message…

Already, we’ve seen reports linking West Ham with exciting homegrown talents like James McAtee as well as the work they done to bring in a plethora of promising players over the summer.

Going by this blueprint, Moyes could certainly have a promising plan on his hands as he thinks about the bigger picture.

Exclusive: Palmer drops huge Nuno verdict amid Spurs struggles

Former Premier League star Carlton Palmer insists that Nuno Espirito Santo is not a “top” manager amid his struggles at Tottenham Hotspur.

The club are winning games, and have lost their last three Premier League outings.

The manner of those defeats have been particularly troubling, with Spurs losing 3-0 to both Crystal Palace and Chelsea, and being beaten 3-1 by Arsenal in a one-sided north London derby.

They face Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend, with Dean Smith’s men fresh from their 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And Palmer does not think that the club made the right move in appointing Nuno, having endured a genuinely chaotic managerial search that saw a number of names linked with the club.

Indeed, the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and Gennaro Gattuso were all briefly considered by the club, prior to the appointment of the former Wolves boss.

The ex-England international said: “They haven’t been able, even from the start, let’s be right about this and no disrespect to Nuno, to attract a top manager. Nuno was brought in, what, maybe eighth, ninth, tenth choice as manager.

“That shows the unrest within the football club and the way that the club is at the moment.”

Brett Lee showed some speed during his return from injury in one of the few good signs from Australia during a heavy Twenty20 loss to Pakistan. Brad Haddin, the stand-in captain, felt his side was already on the plane home following the tough one-day series, and they were dismissed for 108 before going down by seven wickets. However, Haddin was pleased with the effort of Lee, who had figures of 1 for 22 from four overs in a promising start following five months out with foot and ankle problems. “It was good to see the return of Brett Lee and if tonight’s any indication of how he’s going to go it looks like he is going to come back with some pretty good pace,” Haddin told AAP after the match.Lee’s first ball was recorded at 149kph and gained an edge from Salman Butt, but it went for four when Marcus North couldn’t hold the catch in the cordon. “I think it shocked the slips a bit, just how quick it did come through,” Haddin said. “It was good to see.” Lee’s wicket came when Ahmed Shehzad miscued a pull and was caught by a diving Ben Laughlin. While Lee came through the match and will now head to South Africa for the IPL, Shane Watson will fly home after injuring his groin. Watson, who struck 33 from 14 deliveries, and Haddin (24) put on 42 for the opening wicket before Pakistan took control with Watson’s exit to Umar Gul.”From that moment on we were totally outplayed for the remainder of the match,” Haddin said. “It looked like we didn’t bring our game at all and we had half a foot on the plane.”Shahid Afridi stepped in with three wickets and Gul picked up 4 for 8 from four overs to set up Pakistan’s victory. Kamran Akmal’s unbeaten half-century guided them home in the 17th over.

MUFC fans react to triple contract update

Reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano shared updates on Manchester United trio Bruno Fernandes, Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba on Sunday afternoon.

As to be expected, his social media post received plenty of interaction from a number of United fans.

According to Romano, Fernandes has been United’s ‘priority’ since last July when it comes to offering contract extensions to members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

His current deal, which is worth £180,000 per week, runs until 2025, but United are in talks with the 27-year-old’s representatives over an improved salary and possible length of a new contract.

Romano added that Shaw is also on the club’s renewals list, while the Red Devils are also waiting on a response from Pogba over a fresh Old Trafford contract.

The Englishman’s contract has just under two years to run, whereas Pogba could leave for nothing at the end of the season should his situation remain the same.

United fans react

Here is what these Manchester United fans had to say on Twitter in response to Romano’s post, with one labelling it as ‘important news’ as all three are regulars in Solskjaer’s first XI.

Zinckernagel stole the show vs Barnsley

With Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest side heading into Wednesday night’s fixture on the back of a promising first performance under the 41-year-old manager last weekend, the Reds would certainly have been hoping for yet another fine display, and perhaps even their first win, under the leadership of the Welshman at Barnsley.

And Forest did not disappoint, as second-half goals Philip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Lewis Grabban helped to secure a highly impressive turnaround at Oakwell, after Cauley Woodrow has given the hosts the lead in the 20th minute of the match, with the Garibaldi running out 3-1 winners.

The result sees the Reds move out of the Championship relegation zone for the first time since matchday one, however, while the club’s small climb up the second tier standings will undoubtedly have delighted Cooper, the level of performances from a number of his players in the fixture is sure to have pleased the 41-year-old much more – none less so than the display of Philip Zinckernagel.

Three key passes

Having been deployed at centre-forward as a result of Lewis Grabban’s slight knock, the right-winger thrived in the position, playing an influential role in two of Forest’s goals on the night.

Indeed, over his 90 minutes on the pitch, the £2.7m-rated man scored one goal, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as hitting the target with all three of his shots at goal, making three key passes and completing one cross.

The 26-year-old who Xisco Munoz dubbed a “brilliant” talent also helped out in a defensive capacity, making one clearance, two tackles and winning four duels against the Tykes.

These returns saw the former Denmark U20 international receive a SofaScore match rating of 8.1, a score which, aside from fellow Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson, bettered any other player to feature in the match.

As such, while Grabban’s pre-match fitness concerns initially looked to cause something of a selection headache for Cooper – as the 41-year-old’s other option up top, Lyle Taylor, has far from been in the best form of his life this season – Zinckernagel’s show-stealing performance as the lone striker will have given the Welshman confidence that the winger can more than fill in for the 33-year-old centre-forward if required.

Phillips may start for Leeds vs Everton

Phil Hay has dropped some promising early team news for Leeds United ahead of their home game against Everton on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Where is Phillips?

Marcelo Bielsa said after his team were beaten 5-1 away at Manchester United on the opening weekend of the new 2021/22 Premier League season that Kalvin Phillips did not play because of a ‘lack of preparation’.

Of course, the central midfield player went all the way to the final of Euro 2020 with England in the summer under Gareth Southgate, and perhaps needs more time in training in order for him to be fully fit to start the new campaign.

The Latest: Phillips update

Writing on his Twitter page, Hay claimed that Phillips is ‘getting closer to starting’ ahead of their match against the Toffees on the weekend.

Whether he will be deemed fit enough to start is another question, but it suggests that he may at least make an impact from the bench at Elland Road.

The Verdict: Promising

It is certainly promising to hear that Phillips is getting closer to starting games, and it would be even more of a bonus if he is fit enough to start against the Blues in front of the home fans.

The 25-year-old showed just how important he is to the side in the Premier League last term, winning no fewer than 5.3 of his duels per game, as well as averaging 2.6 tackles, 1.7 clearances and 1.6 interceptions per match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, he himself will be hoping that the game against Rafa Benitez’s team does not come too soon for him.

Celtic dealt Carter-Vickers transfer blow

An update has emerged on Celtic target Cameron Carter-Vickers, regarding Bournemouth’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Daily Record, Bournemouth are set to land Celtic transfer target Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham this month.

The report claims that the Cherries are poised to beat the Hoops to his signature, in a £5m deal from the Premier League club.

Fans will be frustrated

Celtic fans will be frustrated by this update as the club appear to be on the verge of missing out on a move for the talented young centre-back.

Carter-Vickers is a promising defender on paper as he has bounds of experience under his belt whilst also having time on his side to improve. In terms of his senior appearances, he has already racked up over 100 appearances in the Championship during various loan spells away from North London – playing for the likes of Luton, Bournemouth, Swansea and Stoke.

He has averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.76 across the 115 games he has played in league football, showing that he has maintained a solid level of consistency throughout his career to date. This shows that he is able to perform week-in-week-out at Championship level, which could give him a reasonable chance of being able to succeed in the Scottish Premiership.

Connor Goldson, for example, averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.76 in his last Championship season for Brighton before eventually moving on to Rangers. He played 33 league games last term as the Gers conceded 10 goals in the Premiership. This suggests that Carter-Vickers could have the potential to be as solid of a defender as the ex-Seagulls man, given their similar form in England.

Former Luton boss Graeme Jones called the USA international “incredible” after signing him on loan at Kenilworth Road.

Jones told Luton’s official website: “Graham Potter is one of my best friends and I spoke to him about Cameron, having had him on loan at Swansea last season. He said the character he’s got is incredible, so I’m looking forward to working with him.”

At the age of 23, the beast also has plenty of time left to develop and grow further as a player. This means that he could have been a signing Ange Postecoglou would be able to coach and help progress over the course of multiple seasons.

Therefore, supporters will be gutted that Celtic are seemingly set to fail in their pursuit of the enforcer. They will be gutted that a player of his quality and potential will not be arriving at Celtic Park and will, instead, be off to play second division football in England with Bournemouth.
