Leeds fans tear into Kiko Casilla after pre-season display

After starting off the 2019/2020 season as Leeds United’s number one goalkeeper, Kiko Casilla’s campaign ended with him out of the first-team picture and the whole racism controversy hanging over him.

The Whites secured their return to the Premier League without the Spaniard in between the sticks at the end, with Illan Meslier taking his place in the side and enjoying an impressive run – he kept seven clean sheets in the 11 Championship games that he played.

On Saturday afternoon, Casilla was given the chance to impress Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds took on Portuguese side Pacos Ferreira. But whilst they sealed a comfortable 3-1 win, the goalkeeper had a nightmare display.

Pacos’ sole goal of the contest came after the 33-year-old came rushing off his line, only for the player to take it past him and square it across for a tap-in for his team-mate.

And after seeing his performance, Leeds fans took to Twitter to slam the veteran.

A couple of Leeds fans even urged for the club to sell him, with one supporter calling for the Whites to “tear the contract up”.

With Leeds also reported to be interested in Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, it feels like Casilla’s time as first-choice shot-stopper at Elland Road is coming to an end.

His howler against Pacos has definitely not done him any favours with Bielsa looking on, and it’s difficult to see past Meslier starting the opening fixture against Liverpool in the Premier League.

And judging by the reaction of some of these Leeds fans, there won’t be too many tears shed at Casilla’s era being over.

Leeds fans go wild over Ben White report

Leeds United fans have been going wild this week after a fresh report emerged surrounding popular loan star Ben White.

According to John Percy at the Telegraph, the Brighton loanee is set to sign a two-month extension to his loan deal to remain at Elland Road for the conclusion of the 2019/20 Championship campaign.

It’s claimed the Premier League outfit will hold talks with the west Yorkshiremen this week with an extension until the end of July likely for the 22-year-old defender.

And the White faithful are absolutely thrilled by the news…

The centre-back as been integral to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad and their fortunes in the league this campaign. In fact, he’s not missed a single match and has even filled in for defensive lynchpin Kalvin Phillips on the odd occasion.

In 37 appearances, White has averaged three clearances, 2.3 interceptions, 1.7 tackles and 55.7 passes per game whilst also winning 2.8 aerial duels each match too, via WhoScored.

It’s undeniable that his inevitable return to the south coast is going to leave a huge hole in United’s backline, even more so with Gaetano Berardi looking likely to leave following the expiry of his contract.

But many at Elland Road are desperate to see him stay at the club permanently.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the young Englishman. Leeds will have a monumental fight on their hands to keep hold of him next season.

If Brighton get relegated, then they may be enticed into selling, but it’s believed that the PL big dogs are all keen on him, including front-runners for the title, Liverpool (as per The Athletic, via the Daily Mail).

This could well be a saga to develop over the course of the summer transfer window, whenever that may be.

Liverpool: Fans hope to see James Milner take on a coaching role when he retires

Fans are discussing the future of James Milner after he retires from his playing career.

According to the Daily Mail (relayed via @LFCTransferRoom), the midfielder has admitted he would ‘like to stay in the game’ once he hangs up his boots. Milner has revealed seeing the success Jurgen Klopp has spearheaded Liverpool to has inspired him to take on a managerial role.

The 34-year-old first joined the Reds from Manchester City in 2015 (via BBC Sport). Milner signed on a free transfer and has become an integral part to Liverpool’s recent run of silverware. He has enjoyed operating as vice-captain to Jordan Henderson and guiding the team to their first Premier League title.

Fans are in agreement that Milner would make a good manager after he retires from a fruitful career, perhaps because he has already proven himself in a leadership role at the club. The midfielder has tallied 85 goals and 123 assists across his many years in the game (via Transfermarkt). One supporter has commented saying ‘I rate him better than Stevie G’ as a potential successor to Klopp. A lot of fans have been against the idea of Steven Gerrard coming in to take on a coaching role.

Sunderland should offer a chance to Ethan Robson due to a variety of factors

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Sunderland have struggled for form since Phil Parkinson took over and a big factor has been the decline in the performance of the midfield.

Jack Ross attempted to strengthen that area of the squad with the signing of George Dobson last summer, but the team looks bereft of leadership in the middle since Lee Cattermole left, and that should cause concern for the new boss.

Neither Dobson nor Max Power have offered enough to the side, and looking at their stats it is little surprise that the Black Cats have struggled for goals in the last few weeks.

The pair have failed to produce a single assist this term, while only Power has scored in the league and the team is struggling as a result.

Sunderland have scored more than one goal in just one game under Parkinson, and the most recent match against Gillingham suggests there is unlikely to be an improvement any time soon.

They registered just five shots all game – none on target – and though it is an area the club could look to improve upon in January with new recruits, another option they should consider is Ethan Robson.

The 23-year-old has had a taste of first-team action previously at the Stadium of Light, but his 14 appearances mean he is still inexperienced, and therefore he could take some time to adjust to playing regularly.

However, he seems to be enjoying life out on loan at Grimsby currently, and the goalscoring aspect of his game could be of huge benefit to Parkinson.

Robson has scored three goals in seven league games from midfield and if he can add to the creative threat he poses – with just one assist so far – then he would provide an attacking threat from deep that the side lacks.

He is, therefore, a useful option for Parkinson, and since his loan is up in January he could slot into the side and allow funds to be focused on other areas of the squad.

Former Grimsby manager Michael Jolley stated that he has had a “terrific” impact since arriving at Blundell Park, and if Parkinson allows him the same freedom and offers the same encouragement then he could begin to flourish in the north-east.

Sheffield United should look at Neil Warnock’s comments as a good thing

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

There’s damning with faint praise, but is there such a thing as praise with faint damning?

Because that’s the situation that the staff and players at Sheffield United might just find himself in after some rather weird remarks from former Blades boss Neil Warnock.

What’s he said?

Speaking to talkSPORT, Warnock praised Wilder for the work that he is doing at Bramall Lane right now even though the players he’s working work aren’t exactly of the highest quality:

“It’s an amazing system. I’m not being disrespectful, but he’s got bang average players playing top of the Premier League standards. That’s what you talk about man-management, these lads believe in what Chris is doing and good luck, the fans are loving it and I’m sure they’ll do well.”

Unleashing the beasts

Warnock has always been one that isn’t afraid to voice his opinion on all things football, but this might come back to bite him in the backside at the end of the season.

The praise for Wilder just seems to be never-ending, with ex-pros like Tony Cascarino saying that he should be considered for ‘bigger’ Premier League jobs further down the road, but a comment like this, is exactly what players like those in the Bramall Lane dressing room should be looking for, extra motivation.

Whilst Warnock might not exactly hold the highest esteem when it comes to the world of football, much in the same way John Terry made disparaging remarks about Robbie Savage a number of years ago, the chance to go and prove someone wrong should be a big motivator for the players as they go on this season.

Whilst some might write the Blades off, including to a certain extent us at FFC as well, they should take all these comments and use it as a way to prove everyone wrong.

They’ve already exceeded expectations by even getting into this division, and a quote like this might just be that little bit extra that they need to really kick on and make this season a memorable one.

Tottenham star Moussa Sissoko has to back up his words

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Moussa Sissoko has maintained that Tottenham Hotspur can get back to their best despite a poor start to the season, per the club’s official website.

What’s he said?

The France international has started every single game in the Premier League this season, but Spurs have won just three of those encounters.

Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently 11th in the top-flight, eight points behind both Leicester City and Chelsea in third and fourth respectively.

But Sissoko is confident that he and his team-mates have the ability to turn their form around and begin to climb the table.

He said: “Like always, I give my best for the team and that’s what I will always do, like every player, until the end of the season.

“We are together and we want success together. Of course, the results in the last few weeks haven’t been great for us, but that’s football, that’s life.

“Sometimes it can be like this and we have to work our way through it, stick together and I’m sure good things will follow soon.”

Nonsense quotes

What’s the point of coming out with cookie-cutter quotes that supporters will surely find infuriating?

At the end of the day, all that matters – clichéd as it may be – is the score at the final whistle.

It is all very well coming out with these template words but Sissoko, of all people, needs to start backing everything up on the pitch.

He has been one of the club’s most improved players and, obviously, Pochettino trusts him.

But he has yet to add an end product to his play. On Sunday, against Liverpool, as Spurs lost 2-1, he had a prime opportunity to play in Son Heung-Min in the final 10 minutes but he ended up playing the ball through to Reds goalkeeper Alisson Becker instead.

Indeed, per WhoScored, while he has laid on one assist this season, he averages just 0.5 key passes per game, is dispossessed on average 0.9 times and has 1.7 unsuccessful touches.

Sissoko would do better to work on adding an end product to his game instead of pontificating about his side’s chances.

Tottenham fans are in favour of reported Real Madrid swap

According to El Desmarque, Real Madrid may be willing to offer Mariano Diaz and Isco to Tottenham Hotspur in January in order to sign Christian Eriksen.

There remains huge speculation surrounding the future of Eriksen, who will see his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expire next summer.

And the Denmark international’s form this season – scoring just once in 11 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side – does suggest that his head is elsewhere.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

According to El Desmarque, Los Blancos are weighing up the possibility of including Mariano and Isco in an offer for Eriksen.

It is a tricky situation, though, as the former Ajax youngster could decide to sit tight and leave on a free at the end of the season, which would certainly be more lucrative in terms of a signing-on fee.

The Spurs fans are absolutely desperate for the above deal to take place, though, and a selection of their reaction on Twitter is available to view below:
