Arsenal fans mock Ryan Mason for his saying Spurs can win the title

[ad_pod ]

Spurs might be above Arsenal in the standings (just) but, in light of the north London derby victory and their recent win over Huddersfield taking them to 21 games unbeaten in all competitions, Gunners fans refuse to be put down by any table-related gloating.

However, one person who won’t take the current standings so lightly is former Lilywhite Ryan Mason, as the 27-year-old told talkSPORT that he believes the White Hart Lane outfit are not yet out of the title race.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are only six points off leaders Liverpool, but with the Reds unbeaten and Manchester City only just showing their first signs of faltering as they suffered a surprise loss at the hands of Chelsea, has Mason got a point or is he talking nonsense?

The Emirates faithful certainly thought the latter as they slammed the comments, with some calling the former midfielder delusional – you can find the best of the reaction on Twitter below.

Everton will surely be regretting failing to twice land Andriy Yarmolenko

Everton supporters have been drowning their sorrows in recent times after seeing their side suffer their first defeat under Marco Silva at the weekend.

The former Hull City and Watford chief took over at Goodison Park during the summer following the departure of Sam Allardyce, and he had made a solid start to life on Merseyside prior to the visit of basement side West Ham on Sunday. The Toffees had won one and drawn the other three of their four Premier League games before Sunday’s meeting with the Hammers, yet their unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt as a brace from Andriy Yarmolenko alongside a Marko Arnautovic strike inspired the visitors to a 3-1 win at Goodison Park.

Thus, there have been many disappointed Evertonians up and down the country in recent times, and they are unlikely to be thrilled at recent revelations from ex-midfielder Leon Osman, who admitted that the Toffees twice failed to land Yarmolenko in the past.

And after tormenting the Everton back four with two goals in the 3-1 West Ham victory at the weekend, the Merseysiders will surely be regretting failing to land the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) in years gone by.

The 28-year-old has produced the best football of his career while at Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kiev between 2006 and 2017, in which time the forward proved to be very prolific indeed in bagging 137 goals in 340 appearances for the club, helping them to three league titles, as well as two Ukrainian Cup crowns.

Thus, it’s not hugely surprising, given he has also netted 36 goals in 79 caps for Ukraine during his career, that Everton were keen on luring the Ukraine international to Goodison Park in the past, and Sunday showed exactly why they will regret failing to bring him to Merseyside.

The former Borussia Dortmund ace, who made the move to West Ham during the summer from the Bundesliga heavyweights, proved to be a handful for the Everton backline, netting the opener after fine work from Arnautovic and Pedro Obiang, before cutting inside onto his deadly left foot to fire past Jordan Pickford for his and the Hammers’ second.

Impressively, this was Yarmolenko’s first start in the Premier League for West Ham after a testing first few weeks at the London Stadium, which prompted reports during the international break to suggest that the Hammers were ‘sorry’ to have signed the forward during the close season.

They certainly won’t be sorry anymore given the 28-year-old produced an excellent attacking display to inspire them to their first win of the season on Sunday – in fact, it’s Everton that will be ‘sorry’ for failing to lure him to Goodison Park in the past.

Middlesbrough want Bryan deal this summer

According to the Bristol Post, Middlesbrough are extremely interested in signing Bristol City defender Joe Bryan in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Bristol City will do very well to keep hold of Bryan this summer when considering his performances over the last few seasons.

[ad_pod ]

The 24-year-old scored seven times in 48 appearances for Bristol City in all competitions last term – including a goal against Manchester United in the EFL Cup.

Leeds have been strongly linked with a move for the left-back in recent days, with head coach Marcelo Bielsa said to be a firm admirer of his talents.

However, according to the Bristol Post, Boro are also very much in the hunt, with last season’s Championship playoff semi-finalists eyeing a move in this summer’s transfer window.

The report claims that Bristol City are yet to receive any firm bids for Bryan, but the interest from Leeds and Boro – in addition to a number of Premier League clubs – is genuine.

Can Middlesbrough win the race?

Boro are already being tipped as Championship title challengers for next season, despite the fact that key attacker Adama Traore could leave the Riverside Stadium this summer.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”267842″ player=”12034″ title=”Five things we learned from England v Colombia”]

Paddy McNair and Aden Flint have both recently moved to Tony Pulis’ team, and more new arrivals are expected before the start of the new Championship season next month.

The signing of Bryan would be another huge statement of intent from Boro, with the Englishman developing into one of the biggest talents outside of the Premier League.

Bryan, who is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, looked at home against Man United in the EFL Cup last season, and managed five Championship goals during a very impressive 2017-18 campaign.

Boro are seemingly not messing around this summer, and according to the Bristol Post, they will make a strong attempt to bring Bryan to the club.

The Everton fixtures you really need to keep an eye out for in 17/18

Fans at Goodison Park know this is an important season for their club as Everton sit in a strange state of limbo. Seventh-placed Everton finished 15 points about eighth place but eight off sixth.

Ronald Koeman and company are surely going to do everything they can to break into the top six and that all starts with a home fixture against Stoke City, who the Toffees beat 1-0 in match week three last season.

August doesn’t get any easier for Everton, however, as they travel to both Manchester City and Chelsea by month’s end. They took a point at the Etihad but were embarrassed 5-0 at Stamford Bridge, so two wins would be a huge boost to the club’s top four hopes. A trip to Old Trafford comes three weeks after the Chelsea game, so Ronald Koeman will have to have his club firing on all cylinders as quickly as possible.

Fans and players have already circled the first Merseyside Derby on their calendars, and the 9 December matchup at Anfield cannot come any sooner for them.

A Boxing Day trip to West Brom, where Everton left 2-1 victors last season, is followed on New Year’s Day by a huge home game against Jose Mourinho and Manchester United.

The second Merseyside Derby come on 7 April and the Toffees will be looking to put Sadio Mane’s 94th minute winner in last years fixture behind them.

In the final week, Koeman hosts former club Southampton before finishing the season at the London Stadium against West Ham United…

Spurs look to Pickford or Hart to replace Lloris

As reported by The Sun this morning, Spurs fear that their star goalkeeper Hugo Lloris could leave White Hart Lane this summer and have targeted Jordan Pickford or Joe Hart as his replacement between the sticks.

What’s the word?

Hugo Lloris has made over 170 appearances for Spurs and is contracted to the club until 2019, but the prospect of no Champions League football means he could look for a move away from the club next year, with PSG or Real Madrid potential destinations, according to The Sun.

The paper also report that Manchester City’s on-loan goalkeeper Joe Hart could be their first choice, although wages would be a big stumbling block.

An alternative, say The Sun, is Sunderland’s 22-year-old ‘keeper Jordan Pickford, who is only fully breaking into the first-team set-up this season.

Hart or Pickford?

Joe Hart, who is at Torino, is a known quantity. Any club securing his services know they’re getting a quality goalkeeper with exceptional shot stopping abilities. He is error-prone, though, something that has crept into his game more and more with age.

Pickford represents the chance to secure a goalkeeper with his best years ahead of him. At just 22, he looks to us like one of the best goalkeeping talents in the Premier League.

Excellent performances against West Brom and Spurs themselves this season have had people talking, with many fans tipping the Sunderland man to be a future England number one.

As is the case in modern football, wages would indeed be an issue with Joe Hart on mega money at Man City given he was seen as such an important fixture of that squad before Guardiola’s arrival. On the other hand, Spurs would likely be Pickford’s highest paid contract to date.

Who to go for then? For us, Pickford is a good choice, given his potential, but it’s a move that comes with risks too. Young goalkeepers need time and confidence, and with Spurs pushing for Champions League football, can they afford to have a goalkeeper still learning his trade?

A tough conundrum for Mauricio Pochettino.

Transfer in Numbers: How has Cheikhou Kouyate fared at Crystal Palace so far?

[ad_pod ]

Since arriving at Crystal Palace from West Ham back in the summer (BBC), Cheikhou Kouyate has been a key figure in the Eagles’ midfield alongside James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic.

The Selhurst Park faithful have warmed to the Senegalese international, as he always gives 100 per cent and is an extremely likeable figure around the club with his positive nature and energy.

Big boots to fill

They may, however, have overlooked just how big an impact he has made in south London, as his arrival came almost immediately after French international Yohan Cabaye departed the club at the expiry of his contract.

Cabaye offered composure, calmness and authority in the middle of the park alongside Milivojevic last season, but his contract was not renewed – this may have been down to his fitness, as the former Lille man rarely managed to complete 90 minutes last season as he hit 33 years of age.

Check out Neymar’s controversial new haircut for 2019 and Xherdan Shaqiri as you’ve never seen him before in the video below…

In stark contrast, Kouyate offers a robust, pragmatic approach alongside two midfielders in McArthur and Milivojevic who are also quite industrial, although perhaps slightly better on the ball.

Having said all of that, it is unfair to judge Kouyate on circumstances out of his control, so let’s take a look at his first six months in SE25 in isolation.

How has he fared?

The former Anderlecht man has impressed the fans with his tireless running, and knack of always being in the right place at the right time to nick the ball away from the opposition either with his head or his feet.

Kouyate has kept things tidy in the middle of the park, averaging a pass success rate of 82 per cent (per Whoscored) throughout his 20 Premier League appearances so far this season, whilst also picking up an assist along the way.

His aerial duel success rate of 2.5 won per game only further emphasises just how important he is from a defensive aspect, often snuffing out danger and being there to head clear time and time again.

His 1.9 tackles per game also demonstrate his selflessness in doing the dirty work for his teammates, winning possession back for them almost twice a game.

The Verdict

Overall, Kouyate has to be regarded as a good bit of business. At 29-years-old, he is perhaps in his peak as a ball-winning midfielder, and as N’Golo Kante and Fernandinho have proved time and time again, that position on the field is pivotal to any side’s chances of success.

Additionally, for an initial fee of £9.5m (as per the Guardian), you can’t really argue with the fact that the former Hammer has been exceptional value for money in the modern day market.

20Luka Jovic: Eintracht Frankfurt to Real Madrid €60m (£55m/$66m)

With one eye on the future, Real Madrid splashed some serious cash to sign Serbian striker Luka Jovic.

At 21, he is certainly a good prospect and scored 17 Bundesliga goals last season for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Jovic is still, however, very raw and has yet to impress for Real, meaning Karim Benzema's starting spot up front is not looking under any threat right now.

    19Lucas Hernandez: Atletico to Bayern €80m (£72m/$88m)

A World Cup winner with France, Lucas Hernandez swapped Atletico Madrid for Bayern Munich over the summer to reinforce the Bundesliga champions' backline.

While demanding a hefty transfer fee, the 23-year-old still has his best years ahead of him and will play a key role for the Bavarians this season.

    18Aaron Wan-Bissaka: Crystal Palace to Man Utd €55m (£50m/$60m)

The one issue with Dani Ceballos' arrival at the Emirates from an Arsenal perspective is that he has only joined on loan.
