Wayne Parnell, the South Africa left-arm seamer, has announced that he has converted to Islam

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jul-2011Wayne Parnell, the South Africa left-arm seamer, has announced that he has converted to Islam. Parnell has not decided on a Muslim name yet and will still be known as Wayne Dillon.”I converted to Islam in January 2011, after a period of personal study and reflection and it is a faith that I have always been interested in,” Parnell said in a statement on Thursday. He also asked that the issue be treated with respect as he approaches his first period of fasting. “My faith choice is a matter which I would like to keep private.”Parnell confirmed that he will “continue to respect the team’s endorsement of alcoholic beverages.” South Africa’s Test team is sponsored by Castle Lager, a local beer. Hashim Amla, also of Muslim faith, does not wear the beer logo on his playing kit after making a special arrangement with CSA because of his religious beliefs.Parnell is currently playing cricket for English county Sussex.

Amir fixture was official match, say ECB

The England & Wales Cricket Board has launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the appearance of the banned Pakistan fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, in a Surrey League fixture last weekend, after accepting that the fixture, between Addington 174

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jun-2011The England & Wales Cricket Board has launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the appearance of the banned Pakistan fast bowler, Mohammad Amir, in a Surrey League fixture last weekend, after accepting that the fixture, between Addington 1743 CC and St Luke’s, falls under its regulatory jurisdiction. In a press release, the ECB announced that it had requested the Surrey Cricket Board to assist it in its investigation, adding that it had also written separately to Addington, seeking a full written explanation from the club of the events leading up to Amir’s appearance in the match. The ECB’s acknowledgement of the incident increases the likelihood that Amir will now face sanctions from the ICC for breaching the terms of the five-year ban that he incurred earlier this year, following his involvement in the spot-fixing scandal which erupted during the Lord’s Test between Pakistan and England last August.Though Amir did not deny reports in the Daily Star that he had taken part in the fixture, he claimed he had done so on the understanding that it did not contravene the terms of his ban – something that the ECB have now made clear is not the case.”I was informed by club representatives before the game that it was a friendly match, being played on a privately owned cricket ground,” Amir told PakPassion.net. “I asked the club representatives if the match fell under the jurisdiction of the ECB and they informed me that the match did not. I spoke to several club representatives about the issue and they all told me that it was a friendly match and therefore would not contravene my ban from the ICC. I was informed that I was fine to play.”Amir also denied that he had signed any registration documents with the club and insisted that he would never have taken the risk of playing had he known it was an official match.”I would not be stupid enough to knowingly play in a match that I knew would contravene my ban. Wherever I am going to play cricket, the world will know about it. I would not be stupid enough to play in a match where I knew that I would be taking a risk”.Amir was central to Addington’s 81-run victory in the game, against St Luke’s CC. He surprisingly opened the innings and scored 60 before returning figures of 4 for 9 in seven overs. This is not the first time Amir has appeared in a game which has had to be investigated by cricket authorities. Earlier this year in January, when he was under provisional suspension and still awaiting punishment for the Lord’s scandal, he turned out for a Rawalpindi club to play a friendly game. That prompted the ICC and PCB to investigate the nature of the game before the former eventually concluded that it was an unofficial game and the club wasn’t registered with the Rawalpindi cricket association; Amir was thus found to have not broken the ICC’s anti-corruption code of conduct

Valdívia e Anderson Martins perdem folga e treinam no São Paulo

No UDRS in South Africa-India Tests

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) is unlikely to be used during India’s upcoming Test tour of South Africa because India are against the system, according to sources in Cricket South Africa

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) will not be a part of India’s upcoming Test tour of South Africa.Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa confirmed the news to ESPNcricinfo saying, “[We] will definitely not be using it.”Majola who was in Dubai for the ICC Chief Executives Conference did not explain what had led to the decision but a CSA official said the main reason was, “India are not keen to use it”.Corrie van Zyl, the South Africa coach, said his team had been expecting this development, given India’s stance on the issue. South Africa have used the UDRS in other home series, most recently against England in 2009-10. “We are not going to use it and thats the end of it,” he said. “I like UDRS and it does eradicate a lot of decisions that are wrong, which can only be good for the game.”I’m not disappointed, I almost knew it was not going to happen in any case, so it’s not a major disappointment, and it will still be a very good series without it.”Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, had said in October that the UDRS needed to be implemented consistently and that technology was the way forward in cricket. “I think if the UDRS is going to be successful it needs to be implemented properly by the ICC and not on a 50-50 basis like we have seen so far,” he had said. “It must be used all of the time and not for selective series’ like we see now.”Smith’s team-mate AB de Villiers has also come out in support of the UDRS. “I’d love to see the referral system used,” he said. “It’s necessary to get some of the really poor decisions out of the game. It frustrates everyone. I’ve spoken to some umpires, who also back the system and really want it in place. It’s something that we all have to get used to, and it’s taken us a while to get used to it. I’d like to see it being used in all cricket.”India have played a series in which the UDRS was used only once – in Sri Lanka in 2008. They struggled with their referrals on that tour, getting only one review right, while Sri Lanka successfully challenged 11 decisions. Since then the UDRS has been used in Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand and West Indies and has found favour with several captains and players. The Indians and the BCCI, however, are firmly opposed to the system, even though the ICC have approved its use in principle during the 2011 World Cup.MS Dhoni, the India captain, reiterated his reluctance to accept the system during the recent home series against New Zealand, calling for the standard of on-field umpiring to be improved instead.

Collingwood content on return to old haunt

Paul Collingwood reacquainted himself with the batting-friendly wicket at Adelaide, the venue of his Ashes double-hundred in 2006-07

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Nov-2010Paul Collingwood reacquainted himself with the batting-friendly wicket at Adelaide, the venue of his Ashes double-hundred in 2006-07, to anchor England’s first innings against South Australia and ease the concerns about his first-class form going into the Brisbane Test in a fortnight’s time.England’s overall batting performance wasn’t entirely convincing as they stuttered to 4 for 95 after winning the toss, but Collingwood and Ian Bell turned their fortunes around with a 131-run stand for the fifth wicket. Though Collingwood was eventually caught at gully for 94, his disappointment at missing out on a century was tempered by the fact that it was a vast improvement on the 37 runs he had scored in his last five Test innings.”I knew it was only one innings away. Thankfully it was today,” Collingwood told reporters at the close of play. “It would have been nice to go on and get three figures, but I would have taken that at the start of the day. It’s been frustrating, because that is our job – we have to go out there and score runs, and it’s been a while since I’ve made a big contribution, certainly in the Test match arena.”Collingwood’s contribution to England’s last Test at Adelaide was monumental, but futile. He anchored their first innings with a career-best 206, and then looked on in disbelief second-time around as wickets tumbled at the other end, leaving him high and dry on 22 not out from 119 balls. Australia then chased down a target of 168 in 32.5 overs to inflict arguably England’s most painful Ashes defeat in recent memory. For that reason, Collingwood has never been able to look back on his personal performance with much satisfaction, even though he scored his runs against a top-notch Australia attack that included Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.”I’ve spent a little bit of time out in the middle there, and feel a little bit at home on that wicket, and when you’ve got good memories that obviously helps with the feelgood factor before you go out,” said Collingwood. “When you come up against an attack like that and have a bit of success from a personal point of view, it obviously does give you big confidence.”But I’ve always said you want to have those innings in a winning cause, or maybe a draw, but not a loss – so it will never go down as one of my best.”Subconsciously, the memory of that nuggetty second innings may have played a part in Collingwood’s tempo this time around. In all he faced 116 balls for his 94, before an uncharacteristically tame poke to gully off Jake Haberfield.”I was delighted with the way I started the innings today,” he said. “I thought I left pretty well when I first went in, and then managed to get a few shots away. I want to go into these Test matches with 100% confidence, so I have to score a few runs in these warm-up games to be able to do that.”At the other end, Bell demonstrated he is in fine touch with a classy 61 that was brought to an end when he was bowled through the gate by Ben Edmondson. Afterwards Collingwood was confident that his team-mate was ready to play a starring role in the Ashes, having hinted at a new-found maturity on last winter’s tour of South Africa.”I think he’s developed as a cricketer since the last time he was in Australia,” said Collingwood. “He’s gone through some situations, especially in South Africa last year, that I would say the old Ian Bell probably wouldn’t have got through. He’s matured a lot, and I’m sure he’s desperate to prove to everybody how good a player he is.”

Spurs: Conte handed huge boost

Tottenham Hotspur will face a Brentford side in the Premier League this evening that doesn’t include Ethan Pinnock, with the centre-back ruled out with a hamstring injury.

What’s the latest?

As quoted by West London Sport, Bees manager Thomas Frank said to the media: “Ethan will, hopefully, be only a couple of weeks, so that means Manchester United is borderline, but let’s see.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The 28-year-old limped off in the first half of the west London outfit’s 2-1 win at Watford last Saturday whilst fellow defender Zanka will also be sidelined with Spurs set to face a side with limited resources at the back.

Conte will be buzzing

After last weekend’s slip up against Brighton, Tottenham can no longer afford to make mistakes if they are to secure Champions League football for next season with just six matches left this term.

Spurs have dropped out of the top four temporarily after Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United, although the Lilywhites will return to fourth place with victory at the Brentford Community Stadium.

However, their place is hanging by a thread with goal difference the only factor separating the two sides if Conte’s side are victorious at Brentford.

Therefore, the prospect of playing a side struggling for options at the back is certainly a huge boost for the north London outfit.

The Bees are in inspired form though, winning five of their last six which has ultimately extinguished any nerves regarding an instant return to the Championship.

Moreover, Pinnock has settled into the top flight expertly, playing in 32 of the Bees’ 33 league matches, keeping seven clean sheets in the process.

After Brentford, Spurs face three tricky tasks with Leicester at home as well as a trip to Liverpool whilst a home North London Derby that could ultimately decide who between them and Arsenal take fourth place.

As a result, victory this evening is crucial which means that Brentford’s injury woes will certainly leave Conte buzzing.

Sangakkara reposes faith in depleted attack

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has reposed faith in his depleted bowling attack for the second Test

Sa'adi Thawfeeq in Colombo25-Jul-2010Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has reposed faith in his depleted bowling attack for the second Test. The hosts are without the two bowlers who won them the first Test in Galle by sharing 15 wickets: Muttiah Muralitharan has retired, while Lasith Malinga has been rested due to a stiff knee. Sri Lanka will bank on the services of Ajantha Mendis, who replaces Murali, and could bring in Dilhara Fernando for Malinga.”Malinga is a big loss to be honest,” Sangakkara said in a pre-match press conference in Colombo. “He troubled all the batsmen. With Malinga everyone was trying to survive rather than score off him because they know how dangerous he is.”Malinga is effective with both the old and the new ball it doesn’t matter whether the wicket is flat, with bounce or is slow; he is equally threatening on all surfaces. When a player like that goes out it’s a huge blow. We are looking forward to having him in the third Test. He’s going to take this game off, get fit and get back into the fold.”Apart from Fernando, Sri Lanka have two other pace options in Dammika Prasad and Nuwan Pradeep who didn’t feature in Galle. “Dilhara, Prasad and Pradeep have all been quality bowlers for us over the years,” Sangakkara said. “Pradeep has just finished an A team tour of Australia where he’s troubled all the Aussie batsmen who have grown up on quick bouncy tracks. He’s got a lot of pace and he is averaging in the high 140s. Dilhara is in the mid 140s and Dammika is one of the quickest bowlers we have.”These guys are around to do a job for us and whenever they are selected if they are mentally prepared to go and do the hard work in a Test match and bowl in the right areas, they are going to be effective as well. Let’s see how they share the workload. The competition is pretty high for fast bowlers.”Sri Lanka have Mendis, Suraj Randiv and Rangana Herath, who also starred with the bat, to pick among the spinners, and Sangakkara said the final XI would comprise those who were best suited for the conditions on offer at the SSC. “These guys [the spinners] will have to share the wickets and make sure it’s a partnership effort in bowling rather than depending on just Murali or Lasith. We’ll look at all three spinners and pick the most effective ones. With a batting line up like India you need to pick wickets.”Rangana bowled very steady with the ball and he was always there or thereabouts right throughout the game. He didn’t do anything wrong but we just have to make sure we make the right decision for the conditions we have and the batsmen we face,” Sangakkara said.Mendis proved successful in the tour game, grabbing a six-for, and tormented India during their previous series in Sri Lanka, grabbing 26 wickets. However, since then, he has been handled relatively easily by the Indian batsmen. “Unfortunately for him he took about 26 wickets in his first Test series and in his first big final he took 6-13 so people have been expecting him to do the same over and over again. It doesn’t work that way,” Sangakkara said. “Also he’s played a lot of cricket especially against India, the more you play the players get more used to you. He did very well for us in the warm-up game so taking the field tomorrow I am sure he is going to do a great job for us.”Despite the absence of key bowlers, Sangakkara admitted testing the Indian batsmen would be a challenge. “Test cricket is about being consistent – length and line and making sure you put a lot of pressure on the batsmen continuously not for just over one session but over four to five sessions. It’s going to be a challenge but I am sure it is something which the boys are going to enjoy.”

Celtic tipped to sign another striker

This has been a January of mixed fortunes for Celtic and Ange Postecoglou with 2022 starting with positive results and transfers, but negativity in the fitness room.

With that final point in mind, there could be more business concluded between now and the deadline surpassing.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Mark Guidi who was speaking on Go Radio (via Vital Celtic) this week, who tipped Celtic to land at least two more signings in the coming days after injuries and player availability wreaked havoc with Postecoglou’s squad.

He said: “I think with Maeda being away also and Furuhashi, it’s not been confirmed how long he is out for but the suspicion is that it could be months rather than weeks.

“But I would agree, I think it would have to be in the thinking of Ange Postecoglou to try and get a striker and probably a loan deal between now and an end of the season.

“I think that would have to be in his thinking because if Maeda is away for the next couple of weeks,  you’ve got Giakoumakis, who had a brilliant finish on Saturday. But what happens if he gets injured?

“Potentially no number nine or maybe even for Saturday, certainly for next Wednesday so I think that’s got to be something that they’re looking at.”

Exciting times

It’s likely that Celtic fans will have been feeling rather gutted with Kyogo ruled out for a while and Maeda also called up by his country, Japan.

However, the idea that Postecoglou could dip into the transfer market again before January 31st in order to soften those blows is one that will leave fans buzzing.

As Guidi references, Giakoumakis has been exceptional since finally earning minutes in this Hoops side, scoring in consecutive games now.

However, his lack of fitness has been a concern this term and if he does pick up another problem that puts him on the treatment table, they will be left rather empty in the striker department.

As a result, the addition of another player in that position is something that should enthuse the club’s recruitment team.

Who that will be, remains to be seen, but they will surely be an upgrade on the man that would have to fill Giakoumakis’ void should anything happen to him.

That, of course, is Albian Ajeti, a forward who has found the net on just three occasions throughout 2021/22 and a player linked with a regular move away.

Guidi clearly recognises that the offensive area needs more bodies and if the manager goes on to do exactly that, fans will surely be elated, especially after the success of two of his signings already this month, with Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley starring on debut.

AND in other news, Celtic suffer yet another big blow as transfer update emerges that’ll have fans gutted…
