Pellegrini a contender for Everton job

Everton are considering a whole host of new managers to replace Carlo Ancelotti in the Goodison Park hot seat.

The Toffees have looked at coaches with varying experience levels but haven’t settled upon a number one target yet.

What’s the word?

An interview has taken place with Nuno Espirito Santo, while Bill Kenwright favours a move for either David Moyes or Roberto Martinez. Marcel Brands is a big fan of Graham Potter, but a new name has now emerged in the hunt for a new boss in Merseyside.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton are considering a move for former West Ham and Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Moshiri spoke to the Chilean about coming to Everton all the way back in 2016 but they are now targeting the 67-year-old again. Pellegrini has been contacted about the vacancy and is viewed as a genuine option by the club’s hierarchy.

Would he be suited to Everton?

Focus on his spell at West Ham and you’d have to consider this an abject choice for Everton in the manager market. Pellegrini guided the Hammers to a tenth-placed finish in 2018/19 but was then given the boot in December 2019 with the Irons sitting in 17th, one point above the relegation zone.

Speaking at the time, Jason Cundy said: “I didn’t see Pellegrini as being the manager to move West Ham forward. It was a lazy appointment. I don’t think he could believe his luck that a Premier League club, and a big Premier League club like West Ham, were prepared to give him another opportunity.”

However, after a miraculous sixth-place finished with Real Betis in La Liga last season, it would appear that the veteran has his mojo back. Betis ended the 2019/20 campaign in 15th, so this was quite the turnaround in fortunes.

It’s the type of recovery that Everton require after consecutive mid-table finishes, especially as they eye European football.

Pellegrini copped a lot of flak during his time with West Ham but he’s still a fabulous manager who guided Manchester City to the Premier League title in 2013/14.

In the process, he earned praise from some of the finest players to grace the Etihad Stadium in the last decade. David Silva commented: “He’s brought a joy and a happiness around the place and also to our style of play.”

On Pellegrini’s influence, he added: “Having Manuel here has helped me personally. It’s been really good for me. He’s suited me down to the ground. My style of play is more suited to an attacking style. He’s helped me develop as a player. It’s been a good year for me. I’ve felt good in myself.”

Silva left City as one of their most decorated players, amassing 436 appearances and assisting 141 goals. If Pellegrini is good enough for the creative magician, he’s good enough for Everton.

Yaya Toure was another to wax lyrical about the former Real Madrid boss, saying: “He is a very clever manager who always backs his players. He comes and chats with you and is very open with you. Not just with me but with all the players.

“He gets the best out of the players. He knows how to get the best out of our young players too and he’s the kind of manager we have to have at this club.”

Pellegrini is meticulous and, following the departure of another wise, experienced head in Ancelotti, Everton would be wise to head down a similar route.

He knows the Premier League and has now rediscovered his magic touch back in Spain. He’s certainly an interesting candidate for the Goodison Park hierarchy.

Sukhbinder Singh skittles out Tripura for paltry 116

There was no joy for Tripura on Thursday as they slipped to 116 allout against Assam in their East Zone Ranji Trophy encounter at home

Anand Vasu14-Dec-2000There was no joy for Tripura on Thursday as they slipped to 116 allout against Assam in their East Zone Ranji Trophy encounter at home.On winning the toss at the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium inAgartala, Assam skipper SZ Suffri put the home side in to bat. It wasa decision that paid rich dividends at the close of play on the firstday. Left arm spinner Sukhbinder Singh was quite unplayable. Returningthe amazing figures of 15-7-15-5, Sukhbinder ran through the Tripurabatting lineup. Picking up wickets that spanned from the openingbatsman to the last man, Sukhbinder made sure that the highestindividual score was restricted to S Dasgupta’s 42. AlthoughSukhbinder’s performance was the one that stood out, left arm seamerGautam Dutta with 3/30 gave a good account of himself. In response, the Assam side encountered no problems. Although PJ Daswas run out after he had made 28 (57 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) the firstwicket partnership was already worth 52. When stumps was called, Assamwere motoring on at a healthy 79 for 1. Skipper Zufri, coming in atone drop was unbeaten on 21. The other opener, SB Saikia had helpedhimself to a slow but steady 25 (96 balls) and he too was unconquered.Assam are in a good position, and some steady batting from them on thesecond and third days should see them take the initiative.

Scott Parker tipped for Crystal Palace job

A new name has been spoken about as a possible option to take the Crystal Palace job this summer…

What’s the word?

It is widely expected that Roy Hodgson will walk away from Selhurst Park following the expiration of his contract next month, with London News Online recently claiming it is ‘highly likely’ he steps down after four seasons at the club.

The Eagles would need to find a new manager and plenty of candidates have emerged over the past few weeks. It is thought that Sean Dyche is their top target, whilst the club are said to have held talks with the currently unemployed Eddie Howe.

But now an intriguing claim has been made by Darren Bent on talkSPORT (Tuesday 11th May, 08:10am).

He said:

“What was good about [Scott] Parker, is that he understood the problems at the start of the season. They were conceding, getting battered, but he changed it and made it harder to beat. There is no reason why cannot go to Spurs. But he could also go to Crystal Palace.”

Fresh twist

Parker would certainly be an interesting option and a clear change in direction from Palace chairman Steve Parish; going from the division’s oldest manager to one of the youngest.

It is true that the Cottagers have struggled greatly this campaign, resulting in an instant relegation back to the Championship but their performances have been worthy of better results and there have been major signs of improvement throughout the season.

A switch to Palace, over Spurs, in the summer could be a wise move as he may not be ready to join his former club just yet.

The 40-year-old has rued the lack of a proven goalscorer in his side, something that would be fixed in an instant at the Eagles, with Wilfried Zaha at his disposal and he’s earned a reputation for his trust and development in young players, which could further suggest Palace’s change in plans.

Signings like Eberechi Eze are only going to continue going forward and Parish will need a young, progressive coach to match the exciting, high-potential additions.

Even though they were relegated on Monday night, we have seen vast improvement in Fulham defensively. They have leaked the second-fewest goals of any team tenth or below, including Palace, who have seen 12 more goals fly into their net – yet they are safe.

Once dubbed “intelligent” by Paul Robinson and “incredibly good” by Man City boss Pep Guardiola, Parker would be a very good option for Parish to consider and given he’s gone down to the Championship, it could make any move for him that little easier – especially over Dyche, who remains in work.

The Eagles CEO must now act to try and bring the Fulham boss to southeast London.

Preview: Sheffield Wednesday XI vs Forest

Sheffield Wednesday head into their Championship fixture this weekend knowing that they must leave Hillsborough with all three points to have any chance of surviving the drop this season.

The Owls slumped to a 3-1 defeat last time out against Middlesbrough, a result which kept Darren Moore’s side languishing in 23rd place in the league standings, four points behind Derby County in 21st, with just two games left to play.

As such, nothing but a win will do against Nottingham Forest on Saturday if Wednesday are to have any chance of securing survival on the final day of the season, when the Owls face what could potentially be a straight relegation shootout against Wayne Rooney’s side.

So, will Wednesday make any changes to their starting XI last time out? Here’s our predicted XI, along with the latest team and injury news…

With Jamie Smith – Darren Moore’s stand-in while he recovers from illness – having to deal with the recent injury to key centre-back Tom Lees, as well as the fact that Wednesday simply must win the fixture, we’re expecting there to be two changes, as well as a shift in formation, from the team which lined up against Middlesbrough.

With the Owls starting in a 3-4-1-2 formation in their 5-0 victory over Cardiff City towards the beginning of April, we expect Smith to switch back to this setup for the clash with Forest in order to provide as much attacking threat in the final third of the pitch as possible.

As such, 31-year-old Jordan Rhodes comes in to partner Callum Paterson as the second striker, replacing Andre Green, who is unfortunate to drop to the bench following a decent performance last time out.

The other change is rather more necessary, with the injured Lees being replaced in the starting XI by Osaze Urhoghide, who appears the obvious choice after the centre-back came on for the 30-year-old after his withdrawal against Middlesborough.

Celtic on verge of landmark appointment

Celtic could be heading one step closer to appointing Eddie Howe as their next manager in a landmark move…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Record this week, newly-appointed CEO Dominic McKay is set to start his role earlier than expected, as the Hoops’ massive rebuild gets underway.

McKay was due to start on July 1st, when Peter Lawwell will step away after 17 years in charge of the Scottish giants. But with major decisions needing to be made on their future, he is expected to quit his current job at the SRU.

It’s thought this move could be announced as early as Tuesday morning, with the Stock Exchanges reopening after the Easter break, some three months early than McKay was originally planned to take the helm.

Incoming manager?

This surely means that the Bhoys’ next managerial appointment is in sight, having ‘sacked’ Neil Lennon over a month ago.

The aforementioned report goes onto claim that McKay has already held talks with Howe over the vacant role at Parkhead, meaning this latest update should see that come to fruition before the end of the current campaign.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Celtic are also looking for a new Director of Football to replace Nick Hammond, and it’s believed that Howe has already suggested his former AFC Bournemouth counterpart, Richard Hughes.

This all appears as if the next era at Celtic Park is coming to a head. If McKay does indeed start his new role this week, then the Hoops faithful can begin to get very excited following what has been a turgid and failed campaign.

Given the sheer size of the clearout at the 51-time league champions, we’re certainly about to embark on a landmark occasion – new CEO, new manager, new DOF and likely a shuffle in playing squad too, with club captain Scott Brown already on his way out.

That’s exactly why the Scottish outfit cannot rest on their laurels and why McKay will begin to set the foundations early.

Only a few days ago, reports surfaced suggesting that Howe was the front-runner for the Parkhead job, with The Sun claiming that the ex-Cherries boss had met with Dermot Desmond.

Now with McKay likely through the door this week, we can surely expect the 43-year-old to follow suit shortly after. Excitement should start to increase ahead of the summer for the loyal Bhoys army.

Roberts was poor for Swansea vs Bournemouth

Swansea City’s hopes of securing an automatic promotion spot in the Championship this season took a huge blow on Tuesday night as they were thrashed 3-0 by Bournemouth.

A spectacular goal from Philip Billing opened the scoring before an unfortunate own goal from Joel Latibeaudiere doubled the hosts’ lead just before half time.

Arnaut Danjuma then sealed a comfortable win for the Cherries by smashing a shot past Freddie Woodman to make it 3-0 late on, with Steve Cooper’s side rarely threatening.

To make matters worse, Watford were comfortable winners at Rotherham, meaning the Swans are now three points behind the Hornets, although they do still have a game in hand on them.

One man who particularly disappointed with his performance at the Cherry Red Records Stadium was right wing-back, Connor Roberts.

The Welsh international has been one of Swansea’s best performers so far this season but he was well below-par on Tuesday night, which will surely frustrate Cooper given the importance of the match.

As per SofaScore, the 25-year-old would pick up a poor 6.3 rating for his performance, with only Ryan Bennett (6.2) Latibeaudiere (6.1), Woodman (6.0) and Jamal Lowe (6.0) rated lower.

Danjuma, who was playing on the left-wing, caused Roberts plenty of problems throughout the game, as he played five key passes and got a goal and an assist, resulting in an impressive 8.6 rating.

The Swansea right-back has been excellent going forward this season, with four goals and five assists to his name in the Championship but he struggled to produce any real quality in good positions as only one of his five crosses was accurate, whilst only one of his five long balls would find a Swansea shirt.

He was also very wasteful with the ball, as only 39/52 of his passes found a teammate, resulting in a less than impressive 75% pass accuracy and he also lost possession a remarkable 26 times during his time on the pitch – more than any other player.

Roberts also struggled from a defensive perspective, as he made no tackles and just one interception in the 90 minutes, whilst he would win just two of the five duels he was involved in during the game, suggesting that Danjuma well and truly had the better of him.

Therefore, considering Cooper has relied upon Roberts to be a consistent performer in his side so far this season, it is very disappointing that he was so poor in such an important game for the Swans.

Campbell tips Arsenal to ‘gazump’ Leicester for Edouard

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes the Gunners could “gazump” Leicester City in their attempts to sign Celtic star Odsonne Edouard this summer.

Reports from the Daily Mail last week claimed the Foxes were closing in on a £15m deal for the French forward, who made it clear he wanted to reunite with former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers.

Edouard, who has netted 20 goals this season, is out of contract at Parkhead next summer which has resulted in his valuation dropping over the last 12 months.

Arsenal to ‘make a bigger offer’ for Edouard?

Talking exclusively to Football Insider, Campbell was asked if he feels Arsenal would show an interest in Edouard at £15m, answering with his views on a potential ‘bigger offer’.

“Edouard knows Brendan Rodgers but let’s watch this space.

“If Arsenal are looking at him then they will gazump Leicester and make a bigger offer. Leicester have got a few quid, don’t get me wrong but if Arsenal are interested it’s a different story.

“If Mikel Arteta is interested in bringing the age of the forward line down by a few years then they have got to start battling for Edouard. They will have to put something down on the table for him.”

Transfer Tavern take

It appears as if a summer exit for Edouard is inevitable and with Campbell tipping Arsenal to ‘make a bigger offer’, that could well play into the Hoops’ hands.

A bidding war between the two Premier League clubs could materialise, should both sides be extremely keen to sign the 23-year-old.

That may then see the Hoops receiving a fee closer to their £25m valuation from during the January window, which would be a massive boost to help kickstart Dominic McKay’s reign – that is a lot of money the new Bhoys chief could reinvest into the squad.
