Jim Allenby scored an unbeaten half century to put Glamorgan in a handy position at the end of the second day of their County Championship Division Two match against Worcestershire in Cardiff.Allenby scored 71 not out with the Welsh county finishing on 235 for 7 – a lead of 112 – after Worcestershire were bowled out for only 123 on the first day. There were also useful contributions from opener Ben Wright (40) and Marcus North (48) in a low-scoring contest, while Worcestershire seam duo Alan Richardson and Gareth Andrew claimed three wickets apiece. An hour’s play was lost to rain in the middle of the morning session and when the players returned to the middle Andrew made the breakthrough by bowling Will Bragg to leave Glamorgan 22 for 1. Andrew was on target again after lunch, trapping Stewart Walters in front straight after the right-hander had cover driven the bowler for 4.North and Wright gave the Glamorgan innings some impetus by putting on a valuable 59 for the third wicket. Glamorgan had reached the 100-mark but, in the next over, Wright pushed forward and edged behind to give Richardson his first wicket.Former Sussex batsman Murray Goodwin still has to make double figures at the start of his Glamorgan career and he went for only 1 when he was caught at point by Neil Pinner to leave the home side 114 for 3.Allenby duly dispatched David Lucas for successive fours through the covers asGlamorgan went into the lead just before tea. Resuming the evening session on 134 for 4, North looked certain to get his half century but he was two short of the target as he went leg before to Richardson.Glamorgan skipper Mark Wallace only made one from 11 balls before edging Andrewbehind. But the Glamorgan seventh-wicket pair of Allenby and Graham Wagg proved moreuseful. Allenby registered the first 50 by a Glamorgan player this season and also brought up his side’s first batting point of the summer. The second new ball accounted for Wagg who top-edged Richardson to Lucas endinga 63-run partnership with Allenby. Dean Cosker did a good job of guiding Glamorgan to the close with no further scares as the first innings lead went to three figures.

Estou feliz, professor está me ajudando neste começo, isso me dá confiança. Fica bem mais ofensivo o time. Sem a bola, pressionamos para tomá-la rápido. As jogadas saem.

India seek to build on T20 boost

Match facts

Big Picture

One-off or two-match Twenty20 series are usually lacking in context, and that’s even more the case on this England tour which is taking place a couple of months after the premier, global T20 tournament has ended. But, for a side beaten in a home Test series for the first time in eight years, the positives have been few, and the limited-overs games offer an opportunity to push for more. There were encouraging signs for India in Pune; they fielded with intensity and Yuvraj Singh returned to his match-winning ways.Described as a side in transition in Tests, India looked much more at home in the shorter format as opposed to England, under a stand-in captain and a new-look team. Alex Hales stood out for England with his display of clean striking at the top of the order – he’s one of three Nottinghamshire players from the first T20, each of whom have been told by their county that they will not be allowed to the play in the IPL next season.

In the spotlight

Ajinkya Rahane has been made to wait for a Test debut but has been impressive in the shorter formats. He pulled off a couple of cleanly-struck straight sixes in the first game and looked good for more before he mistimed one to mid-on. Often talked up as a future member of the Indian Test top order, Rahane’s opportunities in the international arena have been very limited, just four so far this year.Samit Patel has had more chances but hasn’t had the best of years. He lost his place in the Test XI this series, though chipped in with a quick 24 in the first T20 international in Pune. He’s got another T20 game to finish 2012 on a brighter note.

Team news

Jonny Bairstow has left the squad and flown back to England for “family reasons”. Jade Dernbach was expensive in his three-over spell in Pune and England could consider giving Middlesex seamer James Harris a go in his place.England (possible): 1 Michael Lumb, 2 Alex Hales, 3 Luke Wright, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Samit Patel, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Tim Bresnan, 8 James Tredwell, 9 Stuart Meaker, 10 Danny Briggs, 11 James Harris.Should India wish to make a change, they have Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the Uttar Pradesh seamer, or Abhimanyu Mithun, on the bench.India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Ajinkya Rahane 3, Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt and wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Parvinder Awana/Abhimanyu Mithun, 10 Piyush Chawla, 11 Ashok Dinda.

Stats and trivia

  • India’s win over England in Pune was their second-best against a non-‘minnow’ team in terms of balls to spare; they had won with 15 balls to spare against Pakistan in the World Twenty20.
  • Yuvraj Singh’s effort was the 16th instance of a player scoring 30 or more and picking up three or more wickets in the same game. He’s done it twice.

Quotes

“I felt each and every bowler, apart from Yuvraj, bowled at least one bad over in the game. But I’m overall very happy with the performance.”

“We got off to a great start. Alex Hales played tremendously well along with Luke Wright but in that middle period we failed to kick on and score. That positivity wasn’t there in our batting and we lacked about 15 or 20.”

Compton in awe of Cook's records

Nick Compton was happy to play a supporting role as Alastair Cook continued his remarkable from in the Test series against India

George Dobell in Kolkata06-Dec-2012

Nick Compton: ‘It would be nice to have gone on, of course. But if you’d told me I’d get my maiden 50 today, I would have taken it – no doubt’•BCCI

Nick Compton was happy to play a supporting role as Alastair Cook continued his remarkable from in the Test series against India. Compton, the 29-year-old playing his third Test, scored his maiden half-century at this level in helping Cook, who finished the day unbeaten on 136, post an opening partnership of 165 on the second day of the third Test in Kolkata. It was Cook’s 23rd Test century and his third in successive Tests this series. Not only did that make him the leading century maker for England in their Test history but it also made him the youngest man from any country to pass the milestone of 7,000 Test runs.Afterwards Compton spoke in something approaching awe of his captain’s performance. “Standing out there today, looking up at the board and seeing those stats: 7,000 runs, the youngest player to do that; it was quite an amazing moment,” Compton said. “I thought ‘I’m batting with this guy; he’s just got another hundred, and he’s the all-time leading English hundred-maker.’ It speaks volumes that he’s been able to do that from a young age. A lot of players only find their feet at perhaps my age, 28 or 29, but he did it a long time before. And he is still is a young player.”Compton compared the experience of batting with Cook to batting with Marcus Trescothick, his team-mate and captain at Somerset. “To bat with him is quite similar, in some ways, to batting with Trescothick,” Compton said. “It’s how clinical they are with every delivery. They make very few mistakes and every ball is played in a similar fashion.”It’s the mark of a serious player that he does the simple things very, very well and for a long period of time and that’s been very clear batting at the other end. Not a lot is said; he’s very clear in his gameplan.”He gives the other players a lot of confidence out there, because he’s so solid. He’s very unflappable, not a lot of airs and graces, and just gets on and does it. It makes a big difference to have someone who’s so chilled out at the other end.”Compton admitted he was disappointed with the manner of his dismissal for 57 – given out lbw when replays suggest the ball hit the glove – but accepted that it would have been a tough decision for the umpire.”It hit my glove” he said. “It’s one of those things and a bit disappointing. But from the umpire’s position, it was obviously a very difficult decision. That’s the way it goes.”As a team we are very satisfied. We spoke about developing partnerships and we managed that quite well. It’s a good way to grind them down. The longer you spend out there the easier it gets.”The relative comfort with which Compton has taken to Test cricket – he averages over 40 after five innings at this level – might be used as a ringing endorsement of the county game. After all, he has played little England Lions cricket, little cricket abroad and owes his selection purely to the mountain of runs he has scored for Somerset over the last couple of years. The fact that he has not looked unduly troubled suggests the step-up between county and Test is not so large as is sometimes suggested. The truth is not quite so straightforward. Compton actually felt the need to hire himself a private coach and mentor, the former county wicketkeeper Neil Burns, to help him develop and refine his character and his game. Tellingly, Monty Panesar also credits his relationship with Burns for kick-starting his career. The fact that both men had to venture outside the county system should raise a few questions.Compton may well be a less limited player than he has shown to date. There was a time when he tried, like so many of his generation, to emulate Kevin Pietersen. But that was never his greatest strength. Having reasoned that, aged 29, he is only going to have one shot at a career in international cricket, he has reined in his attacking instincts and adopted a largely risk-free approach to batting. The big scores may not have come just yet, but he has provided England with a decent platform in four out of his five innings. Indeed, Cook and Compton here recorded their fourth successive partnership of 50 or more; the first England pair of openers to do so since Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick in 2002.”I’m really chuffed,” he said. “It would be nice to have gone on, of course. But if you’d told me I’d get my maiden 50 today, I would have taken it – no doubt.”I’m somebody who does try to spend a lot of time out there. Starting my Test career, I wanted to give myself the best opportunity and I feel like I’ve done that, in patches, but I haven’t managed to go on and get a big score.”I’ve probably missed out again, but I’m happy to get that first 50. Alastair was obviously the dominant partner, but with each milestone that came up – and seeing their bowlers ground down. It gave me a lot of confidence.”

Warwicks take Bear hug on the title

George Dobell at New Road04-Sep-2012
ScorecardChris Wright picked up his second five-for of the season•PA PhotosLike a wrestling bout between a seal and a polar bear, this has been a disturbingly unequal contest between local rivals with little in common other than geography.Warwickshire treated Worcestershire not as an obstacle to the Championship title, but as a road. Worcestershire, who recorded their lowest first-class total since 1971 and their lowest ever against Warwickshire, were brushed away with an ease quite unbecoming of this level of cricket. Having chosen to bat first on a blameless wicket, a total of 60 was not just woefully inadequate, it was embarrassing. Tellingly, their senior pro, Alan Richardson, tweeted an apology to supporters at the close of play. “That’s about as bad as it gets,” he admitted. “It can’t be easy watching us sometimes.”This was a depressing day for Worcestershire. Not only did their distant hopes of salvation recede to the point of invisibility, but it was hard to conclude that the future was very bright, either.Lacking the budget of most of their Division One rivals, Worcestershire have had to recruit more through the address book than the cheque book. Some of the players they have brought in are decent cricketers and may well shine in the Birmingham League. But, in arguably the toughest first-class domestic competition in world cricket, they look some way off the pace. The underlying issue is not just a lack of quality at the club – though that is one issue – but also the failure to coax the best out of the talent they do have. The likes of Moeen Ali, Vikram Solanki, Ben Scott, Alexei Kervezee, Richard Jones, Gareth Andrew, Daryl Mitchell and Aneesh Kapil all have the ability to prosper at this level. Yet all have endured disappointing seasons. Failure as widespread as that suggests something in the environment at the club is wrong. The fact is that only two men in this team – overseas batsman Phil Hughes and captain Daryl Mitchell – average over 25 in first-class cricket this season – that they have failed to score 350 in a Championship innings this season (they have passed 300 only twice) and that, in this game, their first and second change bowlers were men with 12 first-class wickets between them. One – Joe Leach – barely gets a bowl in the Birmingham League and the other – Nick Harrison – gained selection after a List A performance where he conceded 83 in seven overs against Lancashire including 30 in one over. His first ball at this level was a wide and his second a long-hop that was cut for four. Aged only 20, he has the time and the talent to develop into a decent cricketer. Right now, however, he looked somewhat out of his depth. Some will call for Steve Rhodes, the director of cricket at New Road, to be sacked. But even if Worcestershire was that sort of club – and it really is not – there is no chance of that. Not only will the club remain loyal to a man who has, in the last two or three years, achieved rather a lot with rather a little, but they can scarcely afford the cost of jettisoning a long-term employee. Besides, the club know they will not find a more passionate, hard-working coach. In the long-term, it is anticipated that the development that will see the start of construction of a hotel on this ground within a few weeks will allow more money to be invested into cricket at the club. In the shorter-term, many of these players will have a chance to develop in the lower division. It may not be such a bad thing. Some changes have taken place already. Solanki has been dropped – not an encouraging scenario for Surrey supporters who will welcome him as their replacement for Mark Ramprakash next season – while Scott is pursuing opportunities outside cricket having been told that he will not be offered a contract extension. Scott remains a keeper of the highest class, but his failure to score runs consistently has undermined his career.”I feel quite embarrassed by our batting,” Rhodes admitted afterwards. “It was a terrific wicket, but either technically or tactically, we batted very poorly. They bowled exceedingly well. But some of those dismissals…Well, it was men against boys. If I had played like that as a youngster in the Yorkshire leagues, I’d have had my backside kicked. But they are young and when you are young you make mistakes. It’s been a disappointing day.”Cricket is a wonderfully unpredictable game, of course, and Worcestershire might yet stage a remarkable recovery. But on the evidence to date, the gulf between these sides is vast. Warwickshire, it should be remembered, are without several first choice players. Not only are Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Chris Woakes and Jeetan Patel absent on international duty (Woakes could yet be drafted into this game in place of Tom Milnes), but Tim Ambrose is absent with a thigh injury that may well keep him out of the CB40 final. Trott, too, may struggle to return for that game. Here it was the bowling of Chris Wright and Keith Barker that gave Warwickshire the initiative. The pair bowled unchanged throughout the slightly extended first session – extended so as to include the entire Worcestershire first innings – and both achieved not just five-wicket hauls (Barker’s fifth of the season; Wright’s second) but surpassed 50 Championship wickets in a season for the first time in their careers.Huge credit for their emergence must go to Warwickshire’s bowling coach, Graeme Welch. Jim Troughton, the Warwickshire captain, referred to them as “unpolished diamonds” when they arrived at the club but, through the skills and belief instilled by Welch, they have developed into high-class bowlers that would find a place in many international sides. It is worth noting that both men went unwanted elsewhere: Barker first offered his services to Lancashire, while Wright has passed through the hands of Hampshire, Middlesex and Essex. Welch, in identifying and nurturing their talent, will have played as big a part in Warwickshire’s success this season as anyone.”We wanted to have a bowl anyway,” Jim Troughton, the Warwickshire captain said afterwards. “And then neither bowler would give the ball back.”They complemented each other nicely: Barker, left-arm and persistent, found late swing, while Wright, right arm and a bit sharper, found seam and swing movement. The pitch had a hint of green and the conditions were overcast, but there were no terrors in either. Rhodes rated it as “one of our better wickets”.The truth is that the batting was painfully thin. Mitchell, perhaps deceived by Wright going wide on the crease, played across a straight one; Hughes, Matt Pardoe and Brett D’Oliveria pushed unnecessarily at ones that left them; Kervezee prodded at one he could have left and Ben Cox pulled obligingly to a deep fielder. Leach was beaten by inswing and Moeen Ali, feet in concrete, by outswing.Later Varun Chopra, in registering his third Championship century of the campaign, provided not only a nudge to the England selectors but surpassed the Worcestershire total on his own. Alan Richardson demanded respect and, on 44, Chopra survived an edge off the admirable Chris Russell that flew through the slips for four. On the whole, however, Chopra eased to a century characterised by some elegant drives and dismissive cuts with ease.It all means that, if Warwickshire score 350 and win this game, the Championship title will be theirs. Warwickshire do not have one hand on the County Championship trophy. They have it in a Bear hug.

Johnson may have to wait his turn – Arthur

Australia’s coach Micky Arthur has said Mitchell Johnson will have to compete with Pat Cummins for a place in the starting XI during the one-day series against Ireland and England in June and July. Both Johnson and Cummins were recalled to the squad after recovering from foot injuries they sustained during Australia’s Test tour of South Africa in November 2011. “Mitchell Johnson returns and we can’t wait to have him back around the group,” Arthur said. “He may have to wait his turn though, as we are taking such a talented group of bowlers on the tour with us.”Arthur said he was excited with the prospect of seeing Cummins, who took seven wickets on Test debut against South Africa last November, return to top-flight cricket. “The player I am most excited about is Pat Cummins, we all saw what he could do in his one and only Test match and to have him back in the mix is fantastic,” he said. “He has the ability to become one of the best in the world. He and Patto [James Pattinson] will take a huge amount out of this tour.”Arthur hoped the Pattinson-Cummins combination would make their attack a force during the Ashes in 2013. “We hope they both will be firing this time next year when we go to England to claim the Ashes back and drawing on the experience of touring the UK before will certainly give them an edge.”Arthur also expressed support for Australia’s Test batting line up. “I am very happy with where our Test team is headed. Continuity in selection and role clarity is so important in creating team culture and I know that all players now know where and how they fit in,” he said. “We have a settled top six now and, together, this unit has played seven Test matches.”Edited by Carlyle Laurie
