He'd be amazing with Osimhen: Man Utd in advanced talks to sign PL star

Manchester United are in desperate need of added reinforcements in attacking areas this summer to give themselves the best possible chance of returning to the heights they’ve previously achieved.

The Red Devils still occupy a place in the bottom half of the Premier League with just a couple of games remaining, highlighting how disappointing they’ve been throughout 2024/25.

Ruben Amorim has brought the feel-good factor back to Old Trafford, but their tally of just 42 goals in 35 matches showcases how disappointing they’ve been in the forward areas.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have been the two senior options at his disposal, but have only registered seven combined league goals and contributing to their lack of form in the final third.

As a result, it will be no surprise to see the club delve into the market to try and improve the situation, with work already being done behind the scenes ahead of the summer.

The latest on United’s hunt for new forwards this summer

Countless names have already been thrown into the mix for the striker position over the last few weeks, with Viktor Gyokeres, Liam Delap and Hugo Ekitiké all being mentioned with a switch to join United.

Delap, in particular, was seen as their number one option ahead of the window, with his £30m relegation release clause potentially seen as somewhat of a bargain.

However, Wolves star Matheus Cunha appears to be the most likely forward to make the move to Old Trafford this summer, that’s if Fabrizio Romano’s latest update is to be believed.

He stated that the Red Devils are leading the race for the 25-year-old’s signature this summer, with talks already at an advanced stage – as personal terms should now be a formality.

The reliable journalist also claimed that the hierarchy have no issues with paying his £62.5m release clause, with a move edging closer to completion.

Why United’s target would be amazing alongside Osimhen

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has been another name widely linked with a switch to join United in the summer, handing Amorim the ammunition he needs.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhenreacts

The 26-year-old is currently spending the year on loan at Galatasaray from Italian side Napoli, enjoying an excellent spell in front of goal – netting 33 goals in 37 games.

Such a record would be hugely welcomed by the Red Devils manager if he completed the move, forming a superb partnership with Cunha in the final third.

The Brazilian would be signed to operate in a number 10 position behind the striker, with his stats from 2024/25 certainly aiding Osimhen’s quest for goals in the Premier League.

He’s managed to register 2.0 chances created per 90, along with 2.15 successful dribbles per 90, evidently aiming to get the ball forward at any given opportunity – subsequently aiding Osimhen in the process.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhareacts

The Brazilian’s figures within attacking areas are simply remarkable, with his skillset handing himself and the Nigerian the best chance to help United’s frontline.

Cunha, who’s been labelled “phenomenal” by journalist Eduardo Hagn, has registered 3.6 shots per 90 – also having the tools to find the back of the net given his tally of 15 Premier League goals to date.

He has also won 6.4 duels per 90 this campaign, making 4.6 recoveries per 90 – fitting perfectly into Amorim’s system at Old Trafford by working tirelessly in and out of possession.

It would be a huge investment to bring the pair to the Theatre of Dreams this summer, but their talents are there for all to see based on the figures they’ve produced in recent months.

If they could land both players, it would create a deadly partnership at Old Trafford, with the aforementioned duo having the chance to make themselves heroes as they aim to play a key role in their revival.

Blessing Muzarabani: '100 Test wickets would be really special'

Zimbabwe’s towering fast-bowling totem talks about his recent form, taking on Bazball and the chance to make history

Alan Gardner19-May-2025Blessing Muzarabani smiles a lot. He smiles when asked about the UK weather, which he knows well from two seasons as a Kolpak signing with Northamptonshire. He smiles when talking about the prospect of bowling to England’s little-and-large opening pair, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley. He smiles when we come to the question of his own height, which ESPNcricinfo has wrongly recorded as 6ft 6in. “I’m six foot eight, actually,” he grins.Does he enjoy using that towering advantage to intimidate batters? Another smile. “My greatest weapon is my height,” he says, before alluding to the temptation to pitch the ball short: “Sometimes I get carried away.” You can’t imagine that Curtly Ambrose or Courtney Walsh, two of the fast bowlers that Muzarabani modelled himself on growing up, would admit quite so readily to overdoing it.But Muzarabani is used to having to go about things differently. Zimbabwe do not have a great fast-bowling lineage to call on, in the way West Indies do. Muzarabani has had to travel the world to learn his trade, from a gangly youth at the Takashinga Club in Harare, via his time in Northampton – one of the least-glamorous stops on England’s county circuit – to proving himself in Test venues as far flung as Bulawayo and Belfast, Abu Dhabi and Sylhet.Related

From poverty to plenty: 2025 is a bumper Test year for Zimbabwe like none before

The fruits of those labours are beginning to appear. Across four Test appearances in 2025, Muzarabani has taken 26 wickets at 18.61 – more than half of his career tally of 51. In the first three of those matches, he claimed innings figures of 6 for 95 (against Afghanistan in Bulawayo), 7 for 58 (against Ireland in Bulawayo) and 6 for 73 (against Bangladesh in Sylhet), making him the first pace bowler to take hauls of six-plus wickets in three consecutive Tests since Malcolm Marshall in 1988. The only other quicks to achieve the feat are Imran Khan and, in the 19th century, George Lohmann and Tom Richardson.Although that run came to an end in Chattogram, Muzarabani has already shot up to eighth on the all-time list for Zimbabwe. With another seven Tests scheduled in a bumper calendar year, he could well catch Ray Price (80) and end it behind only the peerless Heath Streak (216) for his country. Becoming only the second Zimbabwean to take 100 Test wickets is a realistic goal.”Yes, that’s a great thing,” he says. “Because I feel like Test wickets are really hard to get, actually, so getting 100 wickets is a big achievement for any fast bowler. That would be really special. I’m working through my processes and everything that happens, of course, we work hard to make sure those things happen. But, as well, I’m not really looking at wickets.”Contributing to victories, as Muzarabani did for only the second time in his 12-Test career in Sylhet, is the priority. “That is something that I would really love to do, to make that impact for the team, get those big wickets, so we can win more often. This is a big journey, playing against big teams. But, of course, I can’t be worried about what I’m going to do, thinking too much about it. The goal is just to win more games.”

“In T20 leagues, you learn a lot of things. You meet new people every day. You have to try to understand the captain that you’re working with. Of course, it’s not every captain that will believe in you, so you have to prove your point and try to improve yourself”

Whether sought after or not, wickets have come in a flood since his return to playing Test cricket for the first time in three years in mid-2024. No Zimbabwean who has taken 10 wickets can get close to Muzarabani’s career average (21.84) and strike rate (43.70), not even Streak. For his recent success, he credits the work put in with Zimbabwe’s bowling coach, former South Africa international Charl Langeveldt.”I’m really just enjoying my Test cricket. Working with my bowling coach, it’s about understanding the lengths to bowl in Test cricket. I feel like the more I play, the more I understand how I get my wickets. [Langeveldt] is the guy who has been working with me on my lengths and all the skills that I’m trying to use. He’s been really helpful in the things he’s saying.”While growing up in Zimbabwe honed his ability to “hit the deck” rather than look for swing, Muzarabani is well aware from his time with Northamptonshire of the importance of trying to pitch the ball up in English conditions. “For me, it’s about bowling a touch fuller. Yes, of course, my natural length can work, but also you have to be much fuller [to make the ball move].”Especially with me being tall, you can get carried away. In England the pitches are slower, sometimes when you bowl back of a length, guys can pull you and take you on. But the swing is something that can make you lose your control, so you have to find a balance. I learned a lot [in county cricket].”Muzarabani has played at Trent Bridge before, albeit only in pre-season for Northants six years ago. The ground’s reputation for swing (it is the English venue where James Anderson, with 73 wickets at 19.23, has the lowest average) has faded over the last few years, but Zimbabwe will hope for at least some bounce, allowing Muzarabani to operate at his favoured “ribcage length”.That, of course, will differ markedly for England’s opening pair of Crawley (tall, long levers, loves to drive) and Duckett (short, punchy, quick to pull and cut). Muzarabani knows the latter from his Northants days, although they barely overlapped before Duckett made Trent Bridge his home with Nottinghamshire. He knows both will look to take him on, but will lean on his own new-ball partner, the shorter, stockier Richard Ngarava, who has been Muzarabani’s counterpoint as a left-arm swing bowler since their days coming through together with Takashinga.Muzarabani spent two seasons at Northamptonshire on a Kolpak deal•Getty Images”It’s great bowling with Richie, we pick each other up. When it’s not going our way, we tend to communicate. When my head is going down, he will come to me, he knows my action. We were both playing together when we were really young, 9 or 10. So you know what to say because we know each other.”Just as important as a swift appraisal of conditions may be Muzarabani’s recent experience in franchise T20 cricket, which has seen him feature in the CPL, PSL and ILT20 – with a potential IPL debut on the way. Playing regularly overseas has added to his durability and skill set; against England’s Bazballers, with Crawley and Duckett in the vanguard, he knows he will need to have his wits about him.”To be honest, they [England] play almost like T20 sometimes. So for me, I’m trying to figure out the plan because they are not often going to get caught defending. It’s just more like backing yourself and being positive, because those guys are some of the best in the world. You can’t be worried about what they are going to do. You just have to worry about your lengths and your field.”In the leagues, you learn a lot of things. You meet new people every day. You have to try to understand the captain that you’re working with. Of course, it’s not every captain that will believe in you, so you have to prove your point and try to improve yourself. So I feel like it is good. You’re not in your comfort zone, but you have to learn. I feel like it’s something that’s really helping with my awareness and my T20 cricket.”With the red ball, he will fall back on a simple mantra: “Just hit your length. You can’t start thinking about those guys [what they are going to do], you get confused. Just trust yourself and trust your lengths.”Learning how to make the best of his natural advantages while overcoming the disadvantages – notably economic – of his background, it has been a significant journey for Muzarabani to get to this point. At 28, he should be at the peak of his powers as a fast bowler, and he is relishing the opportunity provided by Zimbabwe’s current glut of Test fixtures.”Playing for your country is always the best feeling, because you are representing your family. Of course, playing franchise cricket, you have extra money and you see the world, you get experience. But the first thing is always playing for your country. For me, that’s the number one thing.”Walking out at Trent Bridge next Thursday for Zimbabwe’s first Test match against England since 2003 will be, he says, “the greatest feeling ever for me and for the team. I’m just looking forward to showing everyone what we can do. It’s just a dream come true, for sure, getting to play [England in England]. No doubt that everyone is excited for the opportunity.”We believe we can actually cause an upset. I believe we are all good enough to really put on a good show. So I’m sure if we just come in and then do everything that we have to do, we are doing everything right, we’re going to come out in a good position in the game.”

Morgan turns back the clock as New York Strikers topple Deccan Gladiators

The former England captain is looking forward to seeing how Bazball goes in Pakistan

Aadam Patel26-Nov-2022It took nine games for a side to successfully chase down a target in the sixth season of the Abu Dhabi T10 and it came as no surprise to see Eoin Morgan there at the end as New York Strikers beat the reigning champions Deccan Gladiators by eight wickets.Morgan may be past his prime and in the closing stages of his career but he rolled back the years to finish off the job at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. The former England captain came in after Josh Little dismissed Andre Fletcher in the first over and navigated his side to their second win in three matches, with an unbeaten 42 off 23 deliveries. It was a game that was in the balance until Morgan and Azam Khan took Odean Smith for 19 runs in the penultimate over, leaving the Strikers needing just six off the last over. And despite Little taking the game to the last delivery, Azam flicked the final ball away to get the single and seal victory for the Strikers.”I think conditions have been different to previous years,” Morgan said. “The couple of games that we’ve played before this have probably had a bit more bounce in the pitch and a bit more pace which is great for the game but it’s just a case of adapting. Today, the wicket was a little bit slower as it was a day game so I think it’s just taken a few days to adjust. For Morgan, after some time working for Sky Sports over the T20 World Cup, he admitted that it has been nice to get back out in the middle over the past week.”Yeah, I still love playing the game,” he said. “It’s obviously a completely different challenge to international cricket. The level of expectation just isn’t there anymore. I’m here to enjoy myself.”That is pretty much where Morgan is at after calling it a day from international cricket in June and it remains to be seen whether he will enter the IPL auction after going unsold last year, but the Abu Dhabi T10 is benefitting from his services in what is now his fifth season playing the competition.”I’m a huge fan of T10, I thoroughly enjoy coming,” Morgan said. “It’s just a fun tournament to play in and all the overseas players like coming here. Abu Dhabi is a fantastic place to play and tour. The one thing that playing in T10 does is that is exposes everything that is exposed in certain periods during a T20 game so when you look at powerplay and death bowling – the two biggest moments in T20 cricket. You have them in abundance in T10.”The Abu Dhabi Cricket & Sports Hub has seen an influx of England players over the past week with the Test squad and the touring Lions party in town. Around 60 of England’s male cricketers have been enjoying the facilities and after seeing the red-ball set-up thrive in recent times under the leadership of his close friend Brendon McCullum, Morgan admitted his enjoyment but also his sense of regret.”I still look at them and I’m very much jealous of the way that they’re playing and the attitude they take into the game. It’s a completely free-spirited attitude that epitomises what Brendon and Stokesy are about,” Morgan said. “Over the years, we’ve tried playing defensively and traditionally and tried to bat for long and that hasn’t worked so he’s taken the initiative to change things that suit the personnel that he’s bringing in and hopefully the success continues in the long-run. It certainly has short-term.”And with England embarking on their first tour to Pakistan in 17 years, the World-Cup winning captain shared his excitement at seeing how Bazball goes in Pakistan.”Yeah, definitely [it’s exciting],” Morgan said. “We experienced it when we first started our shift in 50-over cricket and it’s actually more interesting to see how the opposition react and how they change because it has the power to make the opposition really think In Test cricket, you usually have a plan A and you stick with that for as long as you can. But against this England team, you need a lot more than just a plan A.”

Why did Sunil Narine bat ahead of Eoin Morgan, and why did it work?

Also: why is Pant’s strike rate so slow this season and why did Axar Patel bowl just one over?

Vishal Dikshit24-Oct-2020Why did Narine bat ahead of Morgan, and why did it work? When the Kolkata Knight Riders lost their third wicket in the eighth over, Anrich Nortje had bowled two and Kagiso Rabada was into his second. It was likely that their remaining four overs would be kept for the end and the Capitals would turn to a combination of their spinners, Tushar Deshpande and Marcus Stoinis for the middle overs. With express pace at bay, the Knight Riders smartly sent out Sunil Narine, who has a much better record against spinners than quick bowlers, ahead of Eoin Morgan at No. 5.The Capitals then bowled R Ashwin, against whom both Nitish Rana and Narine had good records, followed by Deshpande and Stoinis. Both batsmen cashed in, tonking Ashwin for 30 in his first two overs. By the time Nortje was brought back in the 13th over, the stand was already worth 61 off 28 balls with seven fours and three sixes. They saw off Nortje’s third over for eight runs, and then took on Stoinis and Ashwin again to reach a century stand off just 46 balls. When Narine fell for a 32-ball 64 in the 17th over, the task of facing Rabada was in the more experienced hands of Morgan, who scored 17 off nine balls. Narine also confirmed in the innings break that the plan was always for him to bat just after the powerplay to upset the Capitals’ bowling plans in the middle overs, and acknowledged it was good to get going against spin. Why did Rana open the batting instead of Tripathi and Narine? The Knight Riders have used four opening combinations so far this IPL. With Narine back in the XI, they had to pick the openers out of Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi and Narine, and they went with the least expected combination of Gill and Rana possibly because of the opposition bowlers, Narine’s poor form while opening this IPL, and the need for a left-right combination at the top.The left-right combination was worth a shot because the Capitals have been using left-arm spinner Axar Patel and Ashwin regularly in the powerplay and Rana could be useful against both, given he struck 19 off seven balls against Ashwin the last time these two teams met. Rana ha scored 58 off 35 in that game but since then he could manage only 54 runs in six subsequent innings at a strike rate of 98.20, so the Knight Riders gave him a new batting position and it paid off.Did the Capitals try whatever they could against Rana and Narine? Not really. They bowled express pace against Rana up front but without using the short-ball strategy. Since 2018, Rana has been dismissed six times against the short ball – the length that has troubled him the most in that period – with a strike rate of 122. The Capitals neither kept a short-ball field for Rana when Rabada and Nortje bowled, nor did they try to target his rib cage despite opting to bowl on a greenish pitch. When Deshpande tried a short ball against Rana in the 10th over, the pace wasn’t that high, the bounce not nasty and Rana smote him over the shorter leg-side boundary for a six.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe Capitals also used two overs of Ashwin for the four overs that were bowled after Narine came out to bat, despite the dominating record both Rana and Narine have against the spinner. It meant Narine didn’t face any express pace early on and instead got time to settle against spin. As a result, Narine smacked Ashwin for 32 runs off 11 balls and Rana collected 13 from seven balls.Eventually, the Knight Riders scored 115 runs in the middle overs (seventh to 16th) – the second-highest in an innings this season, behind Kings XI Punjab’s 118 against the Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah. The Capitals also didn’t bowl Axar Patel at all in the middle overs. Why did Axar Patel bowl only one over? When Rana and Narine were going after all the bowlers in the middle overs, the Capitals didn’t use Patel even once even though he has been one of their best this season, especially with his economical bowling in the first 10 overs. The initial thought must have been to avoid bowling left-arm spin to left-hand batsmen, but when you have made bowling changes in such a way that you can’t use your express bowlers against two batsmen short of runs in the last few games, it was probably worth trying Patel for at least one over from the end where the leg side had the longer boundary.Patel bowled just one over – the fifth – in the game for seven runs and it makes you wonder if the Capitals had the right strategy in place knowing that the Knight Riders had three left-hand batsmen in their top seven (Rana, Narine and Morgan). Why didn’t Ashwin bowl in the powerplay?Ashwin had bowled in the powerplay in seven out of the eight games he had played before Saturday but Stoinis got the ball ahead of him possibly because of Ashwin’s record against Rana. Apart from their head-to-head record in their last fixture, Rana has scored a total of 53 off 22 balls against Ashwin without getting dismissed in the IPL. That’s Ashwin’s second-worst record against a batsman with the worst being against Narine for 28 off 10 balls for zero dismissals, before this game (minimum 10 balls). What’s going on with Rishabh Pant? One of the most destructive Indian T20 batsmen hasn’t shown his true batting colours this IPL. Rishabh Pant’s strike rate in IPL 2019 was 162.66, only behind Andre Russell’s 204.81 and Hardik Pandya’s 191.42 (minimum 250 runs) but this IPL it has plummeted to 117.29 after eight innings.ESPNcricinfo LtdIt’s not like he hasn’t had enough deliveries to score big; he has faced 20 or more balls in six innings out of nine, but there has been a clear fall in his boundary-hitting, striking only six sixes so far, less than one per innings. Pant has appeared more constrained this season, curbing his natural game, as if he has been told to play differently and not attack right from the beginning.Mostly batting at No. 4, he hasn’t been going after the bowling the way he is known to. He came out in the third over but was on 9 off 14 when the powerplay ended. He struck two fours against Lockie Ferguson’s pace after that and ended up handing a catch on the leg side off Varun Chakravarthy for a 33-ball 27. His scoring rate has been so slow that only Aaron Finch and Shubman Gill have a lower strike rate than Pant among 27 batsmen who have faced 150-plus deliveries this season.

Yankees Catcher Had Brutally Honest Take on What Team Must do to Stop Struggles

The New York Yankees have been one of the most disappointing teams in Major League Baseball so far this season. After being swept by the Miami Marlins this past weekend they find themselves in third place in the American League East.

The Yankees are in Texas on Monday where they will start a three-game series with the Rangers, who are currently two games out of the wild-card race. The Yankees are second in that race, just 2.5 games ahead of the Rangers.

The pressure is mounting for Aaron Boone's team and while the manager has enraged fans by often repeating simple lines after losses, one player stood up and made an honest statement about what the team must do starting now if they want to turn things around and put their struggles behind them.

That player? Second-year catcher Ben Rice, who has also played first base and been used at designated hitter this season.

"I think a little sense of urgency would be good for us," Rice said after Sunday's 2-0 loss in Miami. "I think just going forward to continue to do what we can winning ball games and that’s going to be doing the little things."

The little things—including bad errors and costly mental mistakes—have hurt the Yankees a lot lately. If they don't stop doing those things, losses could be piling up.

Rice's teammates might want to listen to him, because a loss Monday night to the Rangers would only ramp up the pressure even more.

West Ham lodge potential new bid for Brazilian who they nearly signed in 2024

West Ham could now be back in for a former transfer target who they were on the verge of signing for Julen Lopetegui in 2024, according to a new report.

West Ham poised for active January transfer window

According to recent reports, the Hammers are poised for an active January transfer window amid their battle against relegation, and could sign a defender, midfielder and striker for Nuno Espírito Santo.

Reliable club insiders like ExWHUemployee have backed this up as we fast approach the turn of the year, while former West Ham scout Mick Brown has claimed that Nuno is planning a major overhaul.

West Ham have undergone a mini revival under Nuno recently, losing just one of their last six Premier League games, but it is clear they need strength in depth across the pitch.

Niclas Füllkrug is set to leave the London Stadium in January following his lacklustre stint in England, so West Ham are believed to be looking at strikers to replace him.

West Ham’s results in the Premier League so far

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham 0-2 Brentford

Leeds 2-1 West Ham

West Ham 3-1 Newcastle

West Ham 3-2 Burnley

Bournemouth 2-2 West Ham

West Ham 0-2 Liverpool

Man United 1-1 West Ham

Brighton 1-1 West Ham

In terms of the midfield area, James Ward-Prowse, Guido Rodriguez and Lucas Paqueta have all been linked with mid-season exits, so the prospect of a new name in the engine room hasn’t been ruled out either.

Meanwhile, Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell is back on the club’s radar after coming close to joining in the summer, with the Irons planning to ‘reignite’ talks for his signature (ExWHUemployee).

Sticking at centre-back, West Ham could now be back in the hunt for a familiar name — Cruzeiro centre-back Fabricio Bruno.

The 29-year-old made 51 appearances in all competitions for Cruzeiro in the recently-concluded 2025 Brazilian campaign, and his recent form has even earned him a recall to Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad.

Bruno featured in all of Brazil’s last three friendlies against Japan, Senegal and Tunisia, with the towering defender well in contention to be selected for next year’s World Cup.

Belief West Ham have rebid for Fabricio Bruno after near-2024 move

The former Flamengo stalwart was actually on the verge of joining West Ham in 2024.

Fabrizio Romano even gave his famous ‘here we go’ to the transfer and claimed he would be Lopetegui’s first defensive signing, but the transfer ended up collapsing.

Now, as per South American journalist Jorge Nicola, there is every reason to believe West Ham may have rebid for Bruno.

According to his information, a mystery English club has submitted a £13 million offer for the player, and Nicola theorises that the most likely candidate is Nuno’s side given their very advanced talks nearly two years ago.

Bruno’s move to West Ham apparently didn’t happen because of the player’s salary demands, but the Premier League door may now be back open following what has been a stellar 2025 for him.

Former Arsenal and Chelsea defender David Luiz, who was on the books with Bruno at Flamengo, once said he has the ‘quality to play for any team in the world’.

However, given Cruzeiro only signed him in early 2025, they may be reluctant to part ways.

Man Utd have already signed a "beast" who could be their new McTominay

One of the biggest success stories a Manchester United academy graduate has had since leaving the club is, without doubt, Scott McTominay.

The Scotland international has shone for his new club Napoli and played a crucial role in getting his country to the 2026 World Cup.

The 28-year-old has played 50 games for the Italian giants now, scoring 17 goals and assisting seven in that time. He became a club hero by helping guide them to the Scudetto title last season, winning the Serie A MVP award and earning himself a Ballon d’Or nomination in the process.

Ruben Amorim never got the chance to work with him at United, but it would have been fascinating to know how he’d have utilised him.

How Amorim could have used McTominay at Man Utd

It is interesting to note that under Antonio Conte in Naples, McTominay has operated in a few different roles. He’s played as a number ten, a box-crashing number eight and even off the left-hand side.

Well, had Amorim got the chance to coach the Scot, he may have used him as a number ten in his infamous 3-4-2-1 system. The United academy graduate has great instincts in the box and excels at occupying the centre-backs.

If he were to play high up under Amorim, the chances are he’d be spending more time in the box.

Of course, the other area McTominay would naturally fit in Amorim’s system would be as a number eight. In this role, he could still have crashed the box, making late runs to get on the end of crosses from the wing-backs.

Off the ball, his physicality would have been a handful. That is perhaps best showcased by his 1.85 aerial duels won per 90 minutes over the last year, placing him in the top 11% of midfielders across Europe’s big five leagues.

Of course, we’ll never truly know how McTominay would have fitted in under Amorim, but there is a player in the academy who could be seen as the Portuguese manager’s own version.

Amorim’s in-house Scott McTominay

Over the years, United’s esteemed academy, Carrington, has produced some exceptional talent. McTominay is one of the modern examples, and the Red Devils have some brilliant talent coming through still.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

One of those is Sekou Kone, a man who could be viewed as the second coming of McTominay.

The Malian youth international is seen by football scout Antonio Mango as a player who can be “a beast under Ruben Amorim.”

At 19 years of age, Kone has already been involved in first-team squads thanks to United’s manager, who clearly sees talent in him to give him that opportunity. The midfielder was an unused substitute for three Premier League games last season.

As for his performances in the academy, the five-foot-nine midfielder has shown good versatility and an eye for goal. He’s played 14 games for the Red Devils’ under-21 side, scoring twice and operating as a number ten and in the pivot, just as McTominay has shown for Napoli.

The competition in which Kone truly announced himself was the Under-17 World Cup back in 2023.

He helped steer Mali to third place and was one of the standout players in the competition, creating 10 chances and grabbing two assists.

It will certainly be interesting to see how far down the line we are from Kone’s first-team debut.

The 19-year-old could operate in a few different roles, and his ability to have an effect in the final third might pique Amorim’s interest.

It is easy to see how he is the second coming of McTominay. A versatile midfielder who can be physically dominant, despite having a smaller frame than the Scot, and someone able to score goals.

He is certainly an exciting prospect for Amorim and United.

Everton's £90k-p/w "revelation" could become Moyes' new version of Arteta

Everton are building something under David Moyes’ wing – again.

Having shaped the Merseysiders into a force of consistency and resilience over a decade of tireless service, the 63-year-old has been back at the helm throughout 2025, with the summer transfer window packaging exciting new talent into the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, with Idrissa Gueye set to leave at the end of his contract next year and Tim Iroegbunam yet to prove he has the minerals for a sustained starting role in Moyes’ system, Moyes may look to strengthen his central fold in 2026.

He does boast one of the most dynamic centre-midfielders in the Premier League, though, with this profile something that proved successful for the Scottish manager all those years ago at Goodison Park.

Moyes' best-ever Everton midfielders

Moyes enforces a principled and organised playing style, and energy and industriousness is at its heart. This was true 20 years ago, and it remains a core element of the make-up now.

But pragmatic though Moyes has been tagged at times, he has always pushed for creativity, an attacking dimension coming from the centre and with the capacity to defend strongly.

Tim Cahill embodied this. Not quite a forward, he scored lots of goals. Not quite a central midfielder, the Australian was combative and aggressive.

No player has ever featured more often in a Moyes side than Leon Osman. Not the flashiest, the versatile Englishman played his entire career on the blue half of Merseyside, save for two early-career loan spells as he was making his way.

Another of Moyes’ mainstays was Mikel Arteta. Look closely and you may trace elements of Moyes’ influence in the Arsenal manager’s drilled and oiled style, merged with the technical genius of Pep Guardiola to shape the Gunners into bona fide contenders at the highest level.

As a player, the 43-year-old was dynamic and intelligent, adding a dimension otherwise unavailable to the Blues team. He is creative on the ball and tenacious against the run of play, once saying he would “go through a brick wall” for Moyes.

Arteta was arguably Moyes’ most trusted lieutenant, the man who helped make it all tick.

Now, the tactician has refashioned his former favourite in the shape of a new Everton star.

Moyes' new version of Arteta

Like Arteta during his Everton prime, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is a versatile midfielder.

The opening months of the 2025/26 campaign have shown the 27-year-old to be a talented and effective midfielder, situated in the centre of the park and tasked with connecting play.

Yet he arrived from Chelsea, for a £28m fee, having played second-fiddle in Enzo Maresca’s team. He was part of last term’s Club World Cup and Conference League-winning squads, but featured only 13 times in the Premier League, starting twice.

But moving to Everton was the perfect thing for a man in the prime of his career. His performances since arriving at the Hill Dickinson prove this, and he is showing too that he can be a “revelation” for multiple clubs, having been hailed as such for his efforts at Leicester by former boss Brendan Rodgers.

Averaging 1.9 key passes and winning 5.3 duels per game this term, as per Sofascore, it’s hard to argue against the success of the signing; Dewsbury-Hall may even be one of the Premier League’s most underrated signings.

Arteta’s clever and imaginative passing was a staple of his game. In this, Dewsbury-Hall could emulate him. Data from FBref shows us that the Englishman ranks among the top 8% of midfielders in the Premier League for passes into the penalty area and the top 8% for progressive passes per 90.

Starting all but one of Everton’s Premier League matches thus far, missing out against Crystal Palace due to suspension, the £90k-per-week talent has shown he has the personality and presence to become Moyes’ next Arteta, instrumental in progressing play and steering Everton away from their pragmatic reputation.

The likes of Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye will more often than not take the headlines, but in Dewsbury-Hall, Moyes has recycled a tried and tested playing style, and it’s already beginning to bear dividends.

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur is excited to have a “healthy headache” after a long time, one that involves having several options to choose from for certain roles.Take the opening spot for example. Pratika Rawal, with an average of 63 in 11 innings, remains the preferred opener alongside Smriti Mandhana for the upcoming ODI series against England. However, Shafali Verma is still in contention, thanks to her recent form in the WPL, domestic cricket, and the T20Is.This is something head coach Amol Muzumdar confirmed last week after India’s T20I series win. If Shafali returns, Rawal could find herself competing with the in-form Harleen Deol for the No. 3 spot.Related

Muzumdar: Shafali in contention for ODI WC 'without a doubt'

“After a long time, we’re having a healthy headache of having to pick the best team,” Harmanpreet said ahead of the first ODI in Southampton. “Earlier, we didn’t have so many options. Credit to Shafali and Pratika for the kind of performances they’ve put in.”Even Harleen, whenever she’s got the opportunity, she has shown she can also take the responsibility for the team. Clarity as a captain is something I give to all players so that when we go to the ground, we know our role and what kind of cricket we’re going to play.”Everyone knows their role. A lot of clarity is there compared to previously. It’s very important as a player and team to get that. When you’re playing for the country, you want clarity of roles. All credit goes to the team and staff for giving that clarity to the players.”The depth isn’t just in the batting, but in the spin department too. Over the last two years, the spin-offs from the WPL have led to a number of players, like Saika Ishaque, Shreyanka Patil, Tanuja Kanwer, breaking through. The latest among them to make a mark is left-arm spinner N Shree Charani, who was named Player of the Series in the T20Is for her series topping 10 wickets.”She’s a key player for us,” Harmanpreet said of the 20-year-old Charani. “In the WPL, where she played two-three [two] matches [for Delhi Capitals], she was impressive. From there only, we all [team management and selectors] had a chat that she can be a very good option for us.”We kept rotating players to see who fits in well, who could give most two the team. She has been outstanding for all of us. A player like her is very important. Along with her, even Radha [Yadav] has made a solid comeback. Hope their combination will keep helping the team like it is.”Radha, as Harmanpreet alluded to, wasn’t part of the original T20I squad, and only made it as a late replacement for the injured Shuchi Upadhyay. Her ground fielding and catching, along with tight left-arm spin, came in for plaudits from the coaches during the T20I series. And Harmanpreet couldn’t have been happier at her coming of age.Radha Yadav has experience as well as pedigree•Getty Images

“Radha is one of the most important teammates for us,” she said. “When she was not doing well, it was a big headache [for the team management] how we can extract performances out of her. She’s a player I as a captain don’t want to lose at any cost.”In between, she got time to work on herself. When she came back, we had a chat that whatever she’s been doing has been helping. In this [T20I] series when she came into the team, she had the same attitude. She wanted to keep bowling all the time, whether for the first six overs or slog overs. She worked hard during the break and improved herself. In ODIs also she can be useful for the team.”Another encouraging development for the team management is the emergence of Amanjot Kaur. Her rise comes at a crucial time, with key allrounder Pooja Vastrakar sidelined by a stress injury that puts her World Cup participation in doubt. With pace spearhead Renuka Singh also unavailable, Amanjot has stepped up to share the seam-bowling responsibilities alongside Arundhati Reddy.”In the first year of WPL [2023], she was unlucky, didn’t get so many opportunities to bat or bowl. The team we had, it was a big line-up with a lot of bowling options,” Harmanpreet said. “This season, with Pooja not there, she played that role very well. In the batting also, she proved herself.”She wants to contribute across all three departments. The WPL and T20I series, even tri-series [in Sri Lanka], when he has had opportunities, she has contributed. She wants to do something in all departments. It feels good to see a player with that attitude.”In recent times, India’s ODI approach has undergone a slight change. From wanting to bat deep, they’re now trying to embrace a more robust approach as evident in the recent tri-series against South Africa and Sri Lanka, where India made 276, 275, 337 and 342 during their title-winning run.”In the ODI cricket we’ve been playing for the last couple of years, we’ve always focused on scoring more than 300 with the bat,” she said. “It gives the bowlers some cushioning. Earlier we had five bowling options, and it becomes slightly tough if we have only so many runs on the board. Recently, like in the T20Is, we went for four spin options. I think somewhere that has helped.”When we’re batting, we want to look for more than 300 and when we’re bowling, we have good bowling options so that there’s no extra pressure on any one bowler, because anyone can have an off day. We should have another option to be in the game. Pratika is our sixth bowling option; she’s been doing well in between. We’ll try to get more options in bowling. Our fielding was outstanding in T20I series, so we’ll try and carry that momentum.”
